Legions of BSPN lovers and Bucs fans care what helmet hair draft guru Mel Kiper has to say in his ever-changing mock drafts.
But do they care what Kiper thinks post-draft? Apparently they do.
Kiper has brought out his professorial grading pen and has tagged each team’s draft marks behind a paywall at BSPN.com. Kiper likes what the Bucs did, but he says it only works if the Bucs’ questionable quarterbacks come through.

Top needs: WR, OG, OLB, DE
Needs: B+
Value: B+Summary: How we feel about this draft in a year or two has a lot to do with a pair of players who weren’t in the draft, and yet were the focus of it.Josh McCown is the presumed starter at QB, and Mike Glennonmay still have a future in Tampa. And now with Mike Evans and Austin Seferian-Jenkins in town to go with Vincent Jackson, the Bucs have a bunch of small forwards at wide receiver. But if McCown doesn’t cut it, and Glennon isn’t the answer, does Johnny Manziel succeed in Cleveland and leave this front office wondering? I don’t dislike the Evans pick at all, and ASJ’s slot at No. 38 is pretty much in line with where I have him ranked. It’s just now on the starting QB to make sure this works.Charles Sims is a solid depth addition in the backfield, and Kadeem Edwards could be a needed guard solution. Robert Herron offers really good speed late in the draft. Lovie Smith and the Bucs clearly feel good about the defense. They effectively targeted the offense, and didn’t make mistakes on value. Now it’s up to a QB to live up.
Hey, those B+ grades put the Bucs tied for sixth best in the NFL among Kiper’s grades! Wow!
If Joe were forced under threat of torture to give the Bucs a draft grade — which is almost ludicrous even a full year after the draft — Joe would probably give the Bucs a C+. Tampa Bay surely didn’t blow Joe’s doors off, and Joe believes the team should have addressed the quarterback position and drafted higher at offensive line.
Now it falls on Jeff Tedord. Is he up to the task of crafting a dynamic offense with just about zero familiarity among his players and serious potential holes on his offensive line?

Considering other teams had higher/more picks….I think we did pretty well.
Of course, if you think we should have drafted a QB….any QB and in particular if you expressed that you were quite sure that would happen…then you would be thoroughly disappointed.
Too bad…..so sad!!!
I have been a Buc fan from the beginning and I haven’t been this excited since the Leroy Selmon pick. All offense….
For years I have been watching “run,run, pass, punt”…..maybe this year will be different!!!

That’s what I say as far as grading goes. Who knows how any of these players will turn out? That’s when you grade that draft. For the time being though. I’m giving them just a straight B. O-line did need to be addressed earlier rather than later, that’s why I moved down to B from B+.

Anybody ever think maybe they didn’t really get wowed by any of these QB’s. Maybe they’re looking at next year’s class and see their franchise QB there. Draft grades are ridiculous. Clearly teams were not that impressed Johnny Cleveland not even the browns otherwise they would have drafted him with their first pick.

I give them a B based on their limited # of picks and would have liked another lineman in the 7th to develop. a good OL/DL/DE/LB in the 4th would have made it higher, but we’ll see what they do before the season kickoff.

It really falls on the players to perform and Tedford to create a game plan that support their skills. We have a coaching staff this year. It should be interesting to see our QBs in pre-season. As a fan, I have hope in our coaching staff to get the most out of our QBs.

HAHA, Johnny Crap went to Cleveland and he may not even be the starter, according to the Owner. Even if he does starts he will be without his top 2 targets. I see a Gabber 2.0 – We all know Evans made Johnny, and I am super happy he is not here. Next year will be a really good time for us to draft a QB, if we are going to draft one since many teams have drafted one this year and wont have a need next year. Please people, please do not start chanting for Winston.
Overall I think we did good with bringing size, compensation for “speed”. I do agree we should’ve drafted at least a G in the 3rd but hey they are the coaches, not us.

Why would anyone even care what Joe’s grade is. I am amazed that Joe gives so many opinions when he obviously has no credentials to make his opinions any more credible or worthwhile than those of an average Fan Boy. The majority of the time, Joe’s opinions are pretty comical. Especially when Joe is trying to cover himself for nonsense he has previously spouted that has been proven to be doubtful or just plain wrong. Or when Joe discovers something like Bucs officials saying they love Glennon on one occasion then saying they only like him on a subsequent occasion. Only to Joe is something like that an example of the Buccaneer’s lack of candor. It forces Joe to do an analysis about what officials really think deep in the darkest parts of their souls. What would we do without you Joe? We’d miss the revelation of all of those hidden meanings and the brilliant analyses you do to prove two plus two really does equal five. I guess you can’t help it since one of your mentors appears to be the always ingenious Steve Duemig. Hilarious!!!!!

I would think a QB would’ve been drafted if there was a consensus among Lovie, Licht and Tedford. Instead, they drafted a basketball team. The redzone efficiency should go way up with all the 6’5”+ targets to throw to.

Man oh man, could you hear the stammering and stuttering of the radio host when speaking with Jason Licht? He made an attempt to ask a Licht to give a explanation pertaining to the skill set of Glennon and why the Bucs believe in him. He couldn’t get it without stuttering and flailing. He proclaims to have this no nonsense, direct attitude but he was shaking in his boots. He felt so intimidated by Light.

Just like the climatic moments when the L&L ignored your golden boy at 7, I next look forward to Glennon being a successful starter. I’m sure even then you will not admit you were wrong. That’s what makes this so fun.

Interesting that both L&L came from different organizations and now that they have had a chance to work with Glennon and see him stacked up against the prospects they brought in to evaluate, including little JFootball, they believe he is their QB of the future. They have no allegiance to him and could have moved in a different direction very easily like they did with a number of other players. Maybe the kid can play!
Also, heard Big [edited] argue with Jason Licht about whether or not Glennon has a big time arm. Hmmmm, one guy has played and been around football all his life and the other gets paid to act like he knows what he’s talking about on the radio despite a lack of credentials. Wonder who I should agree with?

I sure read a lot of what Joe rights as being right in line with Booger on the air…Glennon is just a guy…nothing special.

Not one single person knows what Glennon is capable of with proper tutelage under good coaching and some actual weapons to work with…you know, more than just 1 WR (VJ)

All I can do is root for the Bucs to get their fans excited again. I’m fine with the drafted players. The defence is good, the offence will be better. I look for the team to win roughly half of their games. That’s not going too far out on a limb. And Joe, I understand your concern about the QB situation and why it seems lacking. We fans have waited this long for a genuine franchise player at that most important position, a further wait could be likely. I appreciate you effort to keep the fans informed of all things Bucs. Great job!

Tired of the “Glennon is only good if he wins the Super Bowl” line. There is so much more into it than that. History is littered on both sides of that fence. Marino doesn’t suck, neither does Fouts. Favre is a pretty good qb and I think he is slightly better than Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Flacco or Russell Wilson.
People love to put Matt Ryan in elite status but he hasn’t one one either and his team was worse than the bucs last year. So does that make him worse than Glennon. By that logic we have the third best qb in the division and he is our backup. If Manziel doesn’t win the Super Bowl did Cleveland mess up?
I understand this is still some anti Schiano backlash. I also was one that put a bunch of stock into Freeman (although I hated the draft pick I gleefully said I was wrong by year 2 to te point I have a 5 jersey), but enough is enough. By accounts I read, McCown looked stellar (like pro bowl good according to pr) in the entire mini camp, and Glennon looked good. We should be rooting for this to work out.
I was on record on this site saying I hope Schiano and Freeman were both back for 2014 because if they were both gone the season would’ve sucked. I’ll say the same thing now. I hope next season we draft everything except a qb, because that will mean the position is solid

Johnson, Flacco, Dilfer all cant’t get out of their own way but won SuperBowls. Even Mannig would have struggled with this offense last year. You cannot make such a definite statement about MG until he has a real chance. Im not saying he’s going to be successful but you don’t know that either. Just like you dont know any of these rookie QB’s are going to be any good. It’s all opinions anyway by us but you should not sound like Dumig that your opinion is the last word.

Recent history is not kind to quarterbacks who lead a team the worst offense in the league. Unless, of course, you believe Brady Quinn in a Super Bowl quarterback.

You keep harping on the worst offense. We know that but he was just a rookie. Aikman I think went 0-15 first year. He needs to hold the clip board for a time and be allowed to develop or not. I dont think Brady started his first year. He made alot of bad plays but he also made alot of good ones. I have faith in Tedford due to his track record until he proves me wrong.

Reading this thread is intense. I for one loved the draft. Really hope that Glennon turns out to be a good QB, but like that he gets a chance to learn under a QB whose seen a lot in this league. As for prognostications about who will be successful and who will be a bust, most of you guys are much smarter than me to be so certain in your opinions.
As for the Joes. I come to your site daily for all the updates. We don’t always agree but that is what it’s all about. I think you guys do a great job with the coverage.
That said, I’ll take my medicine if Glennon sucks and credit others who saw it before I did. But boy, a few of you guys, including the host, are really out a limb saying this guy can’t play. Time will tell.

McCown is currently listed as the starter on the depth chart but it’s not written in stone either. I’d imagine it’s a similar situation as what is going on in Cleveland…Hoyer has been named the starter for now as well. Fluid situations.

Having a QB with “POTENTIAL” to put a team on their and win a game is what we ALL should be aiming for… Not a QB that can manage a game and hope for dominating D to bail us out week in and week out… People love to say oh the Ravens did it with Dilfer… Have you see how the game is played now as compared to how it was then? Then comes the Seahawks from this past season.. Pretty sure the Defense didn’t win every game for the Seahawks this year… Ya 13 games isn’t alot to judge someone by.. But giving him excuse after excuse shouldn’t be a response either…
The Panthers drafted Jimmy Clausen thinking he was going to be their “Franchise QB” then saw the opportunity to grab someone they felt like was too good of a talent to pass up in Newton the very NEXT YEAR.. Think the Panthers are regretting that decision now?

Phillip. I am pretty sure if the bucs land the overall 1st pick next year, god forbid, we’d be drafting Winston or whoever the top QB is. That is not what we were looking at this year.

Interesting how the talk show mouth has proclaimed contempt for Heisman winning quarterbacks, but yet, in this case, he has a mancrush. What a hypocrite. I wonder how he felt about Danny Wuerrfel.

Glennon will start before the end of the season. Regime will want to see what they’ve got in him ahead of then 2015 draft.

If the Bucs drafted Manziel and then Dexter Jackson, Nance Nimmo, Austin King, Larry Brackins, and Darnell McDonald… he would’ve give the team an “A+”.
I can’t see this draft any worse than a B+, then add in the additions in UDFA in QB Brett Smith, WR Solomon Patton, LB Nate Askew, and OT Matt Patchan, and this rookie class is no worse than an A.

I’ll bet you your favorite six pack that Johnny Football does not put up the same numbers Glennon put up last year. Future Super Bowl wins are difficult to predict when so much depends on the team around he QB. I’d think we would both agree that Glennon did not have much to work with last year. Johnny may not even start this year and he’s already down his #1 receiver.

If you want a much better QB I don’t believe he was in this draft and I guess L&L didn’t either. I do like the nickname for our giants though “the skyline”. Much better than “dunkaneers”.

Once again. Glennon needs, no deserves another chance. With the weapons we now have He just might be a much improved QB. Not having an oline will not help any QB. Just ask Peyton.
