McCoy’s Backup On The Way?
May 12th, 2014The Bucs have yet to make their undrafted free agent signings and rookie camp invitees officially known, but it appears only one defensive tackle was signed.
Joe thinks the Bucs must have pretty high hopes for the guy, considering Gerald McCoy really has no backup on the roster.
Joe’s talking about Euclid Cummings out of Georgia Tech. He stands 6-4, 275 pounds and just finished his first season in a 4-3 defense– his red shirt senior year — learning the 3-technique as a starter on the fly.
Joe’s read various interviews of Cummings talking about how he felt like a much better fit in a 4-3 defense, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Cummings said he signed with the Bucs and was told he would have no competition from other new undrafted free agent signings.
Cummings got his degree in December and is known for being a demonstrative presence on the field. He’s also got some versatility, having played end in Georgia Tech’s former 3-4 defense.
Reports had Dallas, Baltimore, Minnesota and New England interested in him. Joe heard that Dallas link and wondered whether Lovie Smith and Rod Marinelli might have kicked around some thoughts about Cummings before (or after) Lovie got the Bucs job.
Cummings will have Joe’s attention at this weekend’s rookie minicamp at One Buc Palace.

I was assuming Spence was going to get a long look at UT because Gholston and Bowers can move inside to rotate with McDonald. Just thinking here.

I love the name Euclid and he finished school, set to go! I’m joining the Euclides!

Whoa!!!! Backup…..is he good enough?…..Will he be the 4th best backup in the division?….perhaps we should put some real scrutiny on all of our backups like we do the QB backup….not as much, of course….but I am more comfortable with McCown going down than I am McCoy…..

When is the date for rookie mini camp ?
May 12th, 2014 at 10:55 am
Just did a search on him and found another site that has him listed at 6-3 291lbs. Also says he ran a 4.76 40. Interesting prospect
May 12th, 2014 at 10:55 am
Joe, your information isn’t accurate. At Cummings’ Pro Day, he was measured in at 6’3 and 291 lbs. As far as having the requisite athleticism, he blazed a 4.79 40 but as far as short area explosion, he was fairly disappointing posting only 28.5″ in the VJ and 8’06” in the BJ.
So you put this guy on a scale and measured him yourself?–Joe

Also, according to the Ga Tech football page, Cummings made all 13 starts, had 37 tackles, 5.5 TFL, and 2.5 sacks on the season. For the season the GaTech defense only allowed 3.6 yards per rush and was also very good against the pass. There’s a chance he might be pretty decent.
May 12th, 2014 at 11:25 am
To Joe’s point Ga Tech website and most other websites are reporting that Cummings is 6-4, 275. But to Brandon’s point, NFLDraftScout lists his pro day measurements as 6-3, 291. Have no dog in this fight. If he makes the team, S&C coach Dave Kennedy will have him buffed up!

Anybody know much about the UDFA kicker…..I think we need to take a close look at Koenen….(expensive)…could free up some cap space for Oline signing….

By drafting 0 D players, I wonder what the message current D players are receiving from Lovie.
1. I trust in all of you to be dominant with my coaching scheme.
2. Some of you can easily be replaced with UDFA, and they will be upgrades.
3. Some of you are very lucky and on notice, I couldn’t replace you yet because our O needed massive attention this draft.
4. A mix of 1-3…lol

Reality is except for height, numbers aren’t accurate anymore anyways. They were prolly lower on his pro day to help his 40 time too. This time next week we will know what we really have

I don’t think the bucs had a choice but to go all offense. When you are 32nd and worst in the league you need to make drastic changes. My opinion is just like Tedford needs time with 8 to see what he really has which I believe is a career backup. being a backup qb is a good / respectful gig so not hating on 8 just don’t believe in him. Lovie needs to see what he has on the defensive side. But the offense and qb play was so atrocious last year regardless off excuses they had no choice but to gut the team.
It will be very telling when the bucs announce the official list of signings because they are over the limit and will have to let some guys go not sure there will be any major surprises but if I was a hold over wide receiver other than VJAX i’d have my resume ready.

Perhaps that is because our starting quarterback is a career backup. Or are you saying any other position on the team is filled with an 11 year backup?
You do realize, as well, that your gloating won’t mean squat when the season starts, because McCown will get a career ending injury and Glennon will be put in a position that will prove his potential one way or the other?
McCown has what he wants. He got his money. An injury now would make him a very happy man, considering he nearly retired once already.
May 12th, 2014 at 12:57 pm
Honestly, I would rather the Bucs make Glennon the starting QB. Just so we can see what he can really do.
Technically, Lovie benched him because he isn’t good enough. Think about that.

@tmaxcon
Actually I was really pleased with our draft. The only picks I did not like was our 5th rd selections. We desperately need Oline depth, but I know very little about the G and T we got…not sure if they even make team. Hopefully one of them help us. But overall, I think the weapons added to our O was a breath of fresh air. The draft says a lot IMO about Lovie and the uncertain future of a few players on our D. Call me crazy, but it has been a while since I have been so optimistic about this teams future. We just need to keep building, but this has been a pretty good start for new GM and coach. We as fans also need to have patience. Constant coaching changes never helps either so regardless of how this season goes I hope Lovie stays on board for a while.

ROFL!

I thought McDonald was actually a 3-Tech last year? Figured we needed a NT more than UT because GMC and McD could both play 3T, while we only have Spence as NT.

A Punter- punts
A Kicker- kicks
I know that seems simple but some people don’t seem to understand the difference.
May 12th, 2014 at 5:21 pm
Make sure you e-mail this to Pam Ward. She struggles with this issue. She literally doesn’t know the difference between a punt, a kickoff and a field goal attempt.
