Embracing Role Of Underdog

May 11th, 2014

underdogNew Bucs guard Kadeem Edwards has heard it all before. He’s not good enough to play big boy football, even though he is big. He can’t play in the SEC, the ACC, hell, even the Big Ten.

So Edwards goes to Division I-AA (Joe has never gotten used to this FBC FCS FBS nonsense) Tennessee State. Even there, while dominating, he was all but told he may want to think of a life outside of football.

But that’s not the way Edwards is wired, as he told the Tampa Bay pen and mic club yesterday after being drafted by the Bucs.

“I always was an ‘underdog,’ so it’s nothing for me to come in and work,” Edwards said. “I like to earn stuff because respect is not given, it’s earned. I just want to come in and I just want to show everybody that I am from a Division 1-AA school, but I am here to compete with the best.”

Not just compete with, but to learn from. Edwards was not shy about saying how he may need a restraining order from Carl Nicks he wants to learn so much from the former Pro Bowler.

“It’s going to be great. I’m just going to piggyback off him and be like a sponge and see what he has to offer me and see what his learning curve is so I can adapt to the NFL just like he did,” Edwards said.

Guard is a weakness on this team, especially if Nicks can’t go. And if that is the case, and Edwards shows any degree of potential, Joe doesn’t see how Edwards won’t stick when the 53-man roster is set this summer.

    I hope this kid lights it up and through his actions sends a powerful message to the naysayers to STFU.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    We must have really liked this guy because a couple of picks later we gave up a 7th & a 5th next year for Pamphile…
    So, I’m guessing they must have had Edwards rated higher…

  3. Drew Says:

    Character is measured by ones ability to deal with adversity.

  4. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Drew

    True-But Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.

  5. RastaMon Says:

    Yawn…I hope he can be one …that breaks through to the othe rside….but NONE of the players selected…have any idea of the Roman Collesium they are stepping into….plenty of 1st round heros have taken the money and said…I’ll schelp around here collecting the money as long as I can…..

  6. tonybuc Says:

    I know this is off topic but tampa signed Chaz Sutton DE from south Carolina, he played opposite Jadeveon Clowney and from what I watched they used him inside on passing downs, and did an admiral job at it, it’s an under the radar signing that could be a steal, like these two kids we drafted a lot of people are high on Edwards, I can’t wait to see these new look bucs hit the field!

    @Macabee

    Thank you for the list-Do you have any thoughts on the organization signing WR Earl Bennett? Remember he was a receiver in Chicago

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    WR Aaron Burks 6-3 207 4.48 Boise St

    -Should be strong competition for the practice squad

  11. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    If

    OG Matt Patchan 6-6 302 4.94 BC

    can stay health for once in his life-Could be a nice addition

  12. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Macabee

    I also would like to thank you for being a balanced approach on the blog lately. You’ve been a great addition to the comment section-And I for one, appreciate your thoughtful wisdom.

  13. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    *I also would like to thank you- for your balanced approach to the blog lately.

    smh..excuse me

  14. Macabee Says:

    LUV,

    When Bennett was released in Chicago, I thought the first place he would stop would be Tampa Bay. Early on price may have been too high, after the draft may be a long shot now!

  15. Jim Walker Says:

    He’ll make the roster because behind him is the equipment manager.

  16. RastaMon Says:

    Brett Smith is not 6’5″ 205…he is 6’+ 205….

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Macabee

    I just want as much competition as possible. I know they’ve signed a few guys after them visited-at a later time. Was just wondering

  18. stanglassman Says:

    Brett Smith is listed as 6′ 3″ most of the time, I have seen one or two places list him as 6′ 2″ and 6’1″ .

    Nice Lincoln paraphrased quotes guys, how Randesk to not give credit.

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @stanglassman

    Was not intended-Damn Grill got-messing up kinds of ways today

  20. williethewonder Says:

    To be more exact, Brett Smith is a quarter inch shy of 6′ 2″

  21. Ernest T. Bass Says:

    I’ve joined the Smithereens, he’s athletic as heck fast for a QB!! Smith, Askew, Sutton and one of the Guards should be in July camp. Maybe the kicker. The Johnny’s left for Cleveland, Freemanites are disbanding, some will join Smithereens, some left with the Johnny’s.

  22. ManzielMadness Says:

    Also like LB Nate Askew. Has talent but needs to be developed

  23. Mumbles Says:

    There will be some surprises. Always is!

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    What’s the effectuation w/ dividing the fan base into quarters. We’re BUCS fans, not Glennon Fans or Freeman fans, etc, etc . When these young men are long gone– we’ll still be BUCS fans.smh

  25. Dreambig Says:

    Watching highlights and Kadeem seems the perfect kind of nasty. His opponents often find themselves on the ground. Looks real good. Pamphile, not so much. Seems easily beat by inside moves. Time will tell but my guss is he doesn’t make it. Don’t know why the moved up to grab this guy.

  26. Macabee Says:

    You guys are correct. Sunday afternoon and Jack Daniels will do it every time! lol. I got the measuerments from DraftScout. Couldn’t get things to line up either. Oh well, gave it my best shot.

    I won’t give up the Jack, but I will correct the typo. DraftScout lists Brett Smith at 6 foot one and 3 eighths (6013). The last number represents an eighth.

    Keep me honest guys and…..err sober! lol

  27. Dreambig Says:

    Well said LUVMYBUCS!

    Love the quote you posted. You are on a role.

    I for one need to heed your advice about embracing the team and not being a divider over my dislike and lack of trust in Glennon’s play. I have become slightly bitter based on all the losing and drama over the last 5 or 6 years. Every now and then one must take a personal inventory and adjust accordingly. I still think we need a qb and I am pulling for Smith to develop. Love his skills just unsure if they will translate to big boy football after playing at Wyoming.

  33. tmaxcon Says:

    thanks macabee good info. Jack is always a loyal friend to have on hand.

    For the most part I really enjoy your post (alongl w/ many others)-Hows the knee holding up buddy?

  35. BucsFan007 Says:

    Watching the vids … I like the way he refuses to let the DT pursue the ballcarrier ….. when that DT (or LB) turns to pursue he relentlessly pursues the DT & rides him into the ground. I’m thinking they won’t be turning & pursuing after a couple of those pancakes, that maybe they’ll be more concerned for themselves ?

  36. tmaxcon Says:

    LUVMYBUCS,

    better now. I had to have a second procedure after an infection set in. believe it or not the hardest part was withdrawals from the meds they gave me. it made me a mean SOB for a few days. it was weird. anyhow, thanks for asking.

    ——————

    Brett Smith was measured in at his Pro Day and reported by several people that he was 6’1 3/4, but some sites are listing him as 6’1 3/8… either way, heights are usually fabricated anyways. Mike Glennon is really 6’7 1/8, ASF is 6’5 1/2, heck, Jaquez Green was measured in at a hair under 5’8 at the Combine and then miraculously showed up on the Bucs roster at 5’9.

    have you seen the highlights of Aaron Burks… i like the separation he gets. That damn blue field still kills me though. Like i said I like his separation and his size. competition he faced is subject I guess. Not as exciting as Sims or Evans but the team needs backups too

  67. Tampabaybucsfan Says:

    @ Brandon

    Friday is too far away…need it to be tomorrow!!!

  68. Tampabaybucsfan Says:

    @ Tmaxcon

    Need to be sober to watch blue field

  69. tmaxcon Says:

    Brandon, no way green was 5’8″ even in Sam’s heels. (too soon for bad jokes???) I stood next to Green in Carrollwood way back and I am only 6 foot and I looked like Ralph Sampson standing next to him.

    Smith’s height is fine. That dude is fast. To bad no one watched him play in wyoming. I am pulling for him. Fun highlights to watch. He basically was a one man show in Wyoming. I am not sold on Herron but have an open mind. his speed is crazy fast too.
