Bucs Draft Super Speedy WR Robert Herron

May 10th, 2014

Labeled “untouchable”

Hey, finally a draft pick Joe was eyeballing months ago has joined the Buccaneers: The Bucs have drafted Wyoming wide receiver and tailor-made slot guy Robert Herron in the sixth round.

And he’s not even tall!

Joe really enjoyed watching this kid workout on NFL Network back in January.

Here’s what former NFL receiver turned NFL.com draft analyst Bucky Brooks had to say about the 5-9 Herron at the Senior Bowl.

Wyoming WR Robert Herron: Herron opened eyes in the scouting community with his speed, quickness and route-running skills. He was untouchable in 1-on-1 drills against big, physical corners, showing exceptional burst and separation quickness. In addition, Herron used a variety of stems and releases to stack defenders at the top of the route to create separation with hard plants and head fakes. Herron’s surprising polish as a route runner took me by surprise based on his reputation as a speed demon. If he continues to impress as a slot receiver with big-play ability, Herron could make a huge jump on the boards heading into the NFL combine and pro-day workouts.

Joe’s researched Herron and he’s a 4.4 speed kind of guy. That doesn’t mean a hell of a lot (keep in mind Chris Owusu also possessed such blazing speed), but it helps. Joe’s much more impressed by praise of Herron’s separation and polished route-running skills.

    But did he play basketball?

  2. Ed Kerber Says:

    Spud Webb????

  3. gatrbuc17 Says:

WEAKNESSES Does not play fast. Marginal toughness — does not like crossing the middle or extending across his frame. Drifts in his routes. Short-arms the ball. Does not adjust to or track the deep ball well. Lacks physical strength and is jarred on contact after the catch. Carries the ball loosely. Disinterested blocker, especially on the back side. Regularly matched up vs. inferior competition. Has been dinged a lot and long-term durability is a concern.

Sorry but this was the only bad pick in the draft

  4. SteveK Says:

    Glennon approved this pick.

Our awesome QBs have some help.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Point Guard….have to have someone who knows how to lateral

  6. Brandon Says:

Love Herron, looked like a 3rd rounder at the Senior Bowl… loved the guy that threw to him even more, Brett Smith. Hopefully, drafting Herron will make signing Smith as an UDFA a better possibility.

  7. finishers Says:

Great pick! love this draft, bring in undrafted free agents

  8. Ernest T. Bass Says:

Can’t wait to see the package with Herron and Sims in there at the same time!!

  9. Jeffobrien Says:

You called this pick joe. Remember reading your article about him a month ago made we want to draft him

  10. Jeffobrien Says:

Still can’t believe we didn’t draft one defensive player would have never believed that but it was the offense that was dead last last year and we added some good playmakers overall I’m happy with draft and feel we got better

  11. Slpstk Says:

Wow copy and past from nfl.com. Great analysis to base your opinion on. Guy is actually a good football player, watch some film before saying its a bad pick.

  12. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Damn, all offense. Love it, why not? Lovie is going to make this defense great, and if at least half of these picks work out, our offense should be pretty good too.

  13. Gus Jackson Says:

    LOVE THIS PICKUP!!!!!!

  14. rayjay1122 Says:

Nice value and fills a need. This draft was all about weapons plus some OL depth and hopefully should help our QB look better than he is.

  15. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Apparently some people expect to find players with no negatives in the sixth round. It is quite comical to read the negativity to each and every pick. I didn’t realize how many former GM’s were on this site.

  16. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Tedford’s not effing around. I love the draft philosophy on offense. It’s obvious he plans to kick ass and take names in the NFC South and I’m totally on board with these picks.

  17. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Our offense just got completely overhauled in a single offseason. That’s what I’m talking about!

  18. RastaMon Says:

Finally..with the final pick…Joe is Happy !…..FWIW……I am very happy with the draft…rookie FA signing tonight and tomorrow…FA vets let go…roster going into TC will be even better…..!

  19. BUCSLEGENDS Says:

@Bucs1987 NO QB’s YOU CALLED IT SIR !!!!!!!

  20. Shawnbucfan Says:

    3 point specialist …

  21. RastaMon Says:

OK….this is how the Offense will look…passing plays…3 high rise towers running crazy…with 2 speed demons over top and underneath wreaking mental havoc ….game managers @ QB…multiple threats on running plays…I am STOKED !….

  22. MadMax Says:

The BUCS are a new team now!!!! and with the right play calling, we’re playoff bound!!

  23. Gus Jackson Says:

Worse offense in the league. You damn right you overhaul that side of the ball!

  24. dee Says:

Love this pick love this draft.

  25. unbelievable Says:

    Weapons. Weapons. Weapons.

Lovin it so far! Now let’s just hope our o-line can protect our QB long enough to get the ball to these guys.

  26. Broy3434 Says:

Great all around draft. Our Defense is fine and Lovie can coach them up. We have WEAPONS now. We shall find out -and we I mean the Glennon mob if he is a real QB.

  27. Back, from Davie Jones Locker Says:

    Great, Great draft.
    Well done, Jason and Lovie
    Well done indeed

  28. kevin Says:

I will be STEALING josh mccown in both fantasy leagues this year in the late rounds to lead me to another champiuonship….Thank you bucs you hit this draft nail on the head. We are ready to compete with NO ANY day now!!!!!

  29. Bogiedr Says:

I am shocked no one has said it … Think Lovie figured out during his “vacation” that suffocating defenses are excellent, but powerfully built offenses are fun? And even with no QB drafted, as much as I will hate myself for saying this … Maybe Captain Checkdown can be rehabbed into a good QB? Josh is good for this season. Bucs are going to be fun to watch!!!! Love this draft.

  30. Tackleblockwin Says:

Honestly I don’t know much about the G and T we took in rd 5, but wow…we got amazing value picks in every other rd IMO. Very excited for this season.

  31. Bucs fan in NC Says:

Maybe Herron will toughen up a bit. I think Michael Campanaro would have been a better slot receiver for us. Camp is a stronger, faster, Herron that isn’t afraid of the middle of the field. Camp runs great routes and is always open. If we’re lucky Campanaro will still be out there after draft. He’s gonna be a steal for someone, hopefully the Bucs!

  32. Buc the Haters Says:

How the hell is anyone going to stop our offense? Answer: They’re not going to.

  33. Chris Says:

Looks like lovie and licht did their research and film study and figured glennon could be better with weapons. I personally don’t view glennon as the long term qb to be honest. But I like the weapons set up for next year possibly.

  34. Robert7 Says:

    Penetration will stop any offense

  35. nate Says:

This draft means all defense next year?

  36. Cmurda Says:

After seeing us go all Offensive with the draft, the possibilities on offense are exciting. Lovie will hold down the defense and the offense is all Tedford. We have sort of an idea of what kind of offense Tedford is going to run. I expect many Multiple TE looks and speed in space with fast RB’s that excel catching the ball out of the backfield. Speed, speed, and more speed and size, size, and more size. Deadly combination that has got me excited although there’s a position behind Center that still concerns me and did not get addressed.

  37. Kgh4life Says:

I am quite surprised that the Bucs went all offense this draft, however, I can see why. The NFC South is one of the toughest division in football and when you have the: saints, falcons and panthers you have to be able to score points. Will the Oline be good enough? That’s the important question.

  38. Jeagan1999 Says:

Could this guy be a Wes Welker type slot guy?

  39. tonybuc Says:

Here’s an idea just hide him behind jackson and evans and no db will find him, call the play hide and seek lol

  40. PRBucFan Says:

LUVMYBUC have to give you the Herron call you profiled him on here before Joe did.

    87 your right. Didn’t draft a QB.
