Mike Evans: Record Setter
May 8th, 2014If new Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans is half the receiver he is in the NFL as he was in college, then he will be a very nice complement during Vincent Jackson’s remaining years as a Buccaneer.
Last year, Evans became a record-holder for the Texas A&M Aggies, which is saying something given the rich history of the school’s football program, notes Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle.
Evans set the A&M record in both receiving yards in a game (287) and season (1,394) and leaves behind not only an incredible highlight reel, but also quite an impression of toughness, even as a former high school basketball player at Galveston Ball who only turned to football as a senior in high school.
Though Joe isn’t wild about drafting a clone of Vincent Jackson (Joe would have loved a speed demon to stretch the field), the fact that Evans has only played three years of football intrigues Joe. Dude is still learning the game.
Now the question is, after Josh McCown’s contract dries up after the 2015 season, who is going to throw him the ball?

7th round – “value” pick Jeff Mathews QB Cornell
May 8th, 2014 at 11:25 pm
Love this kid. Kramden are you Cornell alumni?
May 8th, 2014 at 11:25 pm
We know who will through him the ball Joe. Mike Glennon. Close your eyes and just let it sink in. Mike Glennon.
May 8th, 2014 at 11:29 pm
Players are dropping. Huge value for us at 6 in second round.
May 8th, 2014 at 11:29 pm
I don’t forget when I posted on this site in 2011 how it was ridiculous to suggest the Bucs look at replacing Josh Freeman. I said they should start looking for another quarterback. I was told we need to give him time. I challenge any one visit pro-football reference and check the numbers. NO BUCS ROOKIE QUARTERBACK had better numbers as a rookie then Glennon. Glennon will be our franchise quarterback.
May 8th, 2014 at 11:33 pm
The Bucs seem to be chasing their tails in the drafts. Tarnard Jackson dictates drafting Mark Barron. Stylez G White dictates the drafting of Adrien Clayborne. LaGarrett Blount dictates drafting Doug Martin. They get rid of Talib and give a first rounder for Revis, who they cut. Now they cut Williams and are forced to draft a WR.
Why are our drafts being dictated by character issues from previous drafts? That is drafting re-actively instead of proactively. Not a good way to run an organization.

Teddy B and Carr still available for 2nd round but we have other needs at the O line and Defense. Manziel will have a tough time playing in Cleveland where good college Qb’s end up busting hard. VJ is 31 years old and Evans will eventually replace him as #1 so he has a great veteran to teach him the game and who knows what will happen in the next 6 rounds.
May 8th, 2014 at 11:36 pm
@ Joe, Stork of course, Lovie already said he’s the QB of the future!
May 8th, 2014 at 11:37 pm
I don’t necessarily disagree with Jim Walker. However, unlike those other situations, you can hold the current group responsible for the decisions made by other GM and coaching staff. While they hit on David, the missed on Kuechly, we took a safety to high and missed out a dominate linebacker to team with david.

Hey 87…..
Mike Evans is coming to Tampa!!!
Sammy @ 7 didn’t happen for me but….I’m still happy with the pick.
We should be able to pick a really good player in round 2….
May 8th, 2014 at 11:39 pm
@Jim Walker
That’s a good pick, but you also have to remember it’s from previous regimes. I mean, the whole reason we get a new coach is to fix the mess ups, right?
May 8th, 2014 at 11:42 pm
I think we get another WR in round 5, unless the pick is traded away.
Vikings traded back into first round, darn it! There goes a QB!
May 8th, 2014 at 11:45 pm
Time to accept it Joe, Mike Glennon is the future whether you want him to be or not. Support him, embrace him, accept him. Or don’t and keep crying while we all laugh. Whichever you’d prefer.
May 8th, 2014 at 11:51 pm
Couldn’t agree more Bucrightoff!
May 8th, 2014 at 11:52 pm
I can’t remember which poster said “In Lovie we trust (but need to verify)”, but he and Licht are not starting out on the right foot with all the lousy picks (or lack of picks) they got for the guys we lost, to the conservative pick tonight. I’m afraid Lovie era will be one where we get close to the top of the mountain, but can never get over the top! Guess that’s better than the crap we’ve put on the field the last 5 years, but I want more than that. I want championships, and am already doubting these two.
May 8th, 2014 at 11:54 pm
Bridgewater is gone now. We should just trade our 2nd round pick for a bunch of camp meat. I don’t really care anymore.
May 8th, 2014 at 11:55 pm
I guess it really comes down to terrible hiring of Morris and Schiano. They make the same mistakes over and over again. Then again, if the Bucs had drafted a QB I could make the same argument that they are replacing bad character in Freeman.
We need more stand up guys in the locker room and less cancers. I’ll try to be more optimistic, but the Bucs woes wont be solved this year.
May 8th, 2014 at 11:56 pm
Its a damn good pick. said it before the draft, Mike Evans is responsible for making Johnny boy even relevant. Its just a shame Joe couldn’t realize that.
May 8th, 2014 at 11:57 pm
@ RayJay–agreed. I can be a member of the pirate ship crew again this year, think I’ll pass and go out on my boat instead!
May 8th, 2014 at 11:57 pm
I will be a huge Glennon fan this year. He is going to make me a lot of money betting the under on Bucs games. You go Glennon! That is looking at the glass half full.
May 8th, 2014 at 11:58 pm
@Tampa2Dominates
They also nailed it with Demar Dotson who is the unsung hero of last year.
May 9th, 2014 at 12:02 am
@ RayJay, there you go, at least one way Stork can help Bucs fans is covering the under!
May 9th, 2014 at 12:02 am
@ rayjay
Glennon wont be playing this year. Its going to be McCown for all 16. After the seasons over… its anybody’s guess.
May 9th, 2014 at 12:05 am
i didn’t care for the lovie hire but he says he took the year off to reflect. i liked the tedford hire and am ok with evans, because at least it wasn’t defense.
i still think glennon is not the answer, but damn, i wanna see this team play some games. also, glennon having the best bucs rookie qb record means squat…lol.
May 9th, 2014 at 12:11 am
I kinda feel like this was the least pleasing pick I could imagine. A draft that’s historically deep in wide receiver, and we burn a 7th on one? This may NEVER come again.
Evans seems like a good kid, I just find it deflating to get pretty much exactly what we already got. Clearly they’ll ditch VJax as soon as his contract allows it. Which may pay off in value, but isn’t going to equal wins right away.
We’ve replaced Williams for no real reason, and we still have huge gaps in the o-line, nowhere near a dominating tight end, and let me check, oh yeah, no quarterback.
Also if Cleveland was willing to swap places with Minnesota, then surely there was a deal to be struck with somebody for our pick. A trade down had to be possible.
Yuck so far.
May 9th, 2014 at 12:16 am
@lurker I wanted to point out that Mike Glennon had the best production of any rookie we have ever had. Does that mean he is an All-Pro, Future Hall of Famer. No. But if we can give Vinny Testeverde time, and we give Trent Dilfer time and Josh Freeman time, can we give the guy that has shown something for the franchise another year. I mean if it doesnt work out, then it doesnt. There is no guarantee any of the Quarterbacks this year are franchise caliber, including Johnny Manziel. If all these Glennon haters are right, then we will be picking between Winston, Marietta, and Hundley next year anyways.
May 9th, 2014 at 12:19 am
@andrew….why are you trying to kill my buzz. Lol. I am just having fun with this. Evans is an OK pick. I have been a Bucs fan through back to back 2-14 seasons with Leeman Bennett as coach and I will always be a Bucs fan. That is a curse my Father passed down to me. Lol. I just don’t expect much anymore.
May 9th, 2014 at 12:23 am
@ Zam
I agree, it would be demoralizing if we would have replaced exactly what we already had, but we didnt. Mike Evans is a legit number 1 WR in waiting, something Mike Williams would never have been. look at it this way, instead of have a number 1 and a number 2 WRs with Mike Williams, we now have two number 1 WRs. Not only that, but he should be Vincent Jackson’s replacement in the not so distant future. lol and i hear you about the O line, but the draft is far from over.
May 9th, 2014 at 12:29 am
@ rayjay
And rightfully so. The fact is the bucs haven’t given any of us much to expect in recent years, but all I can speak to is this pick specifically. With this guys talent, he alone brings some new and much needed optimism.
May 9th, 2014 at 12:33 am
Very deflating.
Depressing.
Yuck.
May 9th, 2014 at 12:41 am
Agreed Eric!
May 9th, 2014 at 12:49 am
Not only that, but who better to learn from than Vincent Jackson. I’m sure Vincent Jackson will appreciate someone who is actually interested in taking his advice and becoming better.
May 9th, 2014 at 12:54 am
They can draft Derek Carr- who I’ve said all along was the target.
Then trade Glennon for a 2nd round pick, and draft Kony Ealy-DE
May 9th, 2014 at 1:08 am
I don’t know what Draft you guys were watching, but I thought we just became a much more potent offense after selecting Evans! Now a few O-line upgrades and we can take back the South!
May 9th, 2014 at 4:44 am
Hometown STUD Aaron Murray!!! Mike Fricking Evans baby!!!! I’m stoked.

the difference between all of those guys and Glennon is that they showed flashes that they might be better/more consistent in the future. Glennon looked like a below average QB, who was going to stay that way. There was nothing Glennon did that you thought “Wow, if he could just do that all the time he would be great”
