Sapp: Johnny Football Not Worthy Of Top-15

May 7th, 2014

warren sapp madThe loudest Bucs-loving voice in the media, Hall of Famer Warren Sapp, used to be called the “QBKilla.”

As for Johnny Football, Sapp said tonight on NFL Network that the young quarterback is a great candidate to be a GMKilla.

Sapp weighed in during a Total Access discussion about whether Johnny Football is a top-15 draft pick. NFL Network is buzzing on this subject because their in-house draft guru, Mike Mayock, doesn’t have Johnny Football in the top-15 of his one and only mock draft. (The second half of Mayock’s mock comes out at 9 p.m.)

Sapp said Johnny Football is too boom-or-bust and is the kind of pick that gets people fired because there is no middle ground with him.

This was really no surprise to Joe. Sapp’s on record stating Teddy Bridgewater is not only his No. 1 quarterback, but his No. 1 overall pick.

Sapp’s not a big fan of Jadeveon Clowney, and he loves Mike Evans. Also, Sapp is no member of the Mike Glennon Mob.

Get them all in while you can Joe. Perhaps an all day blitz of Manziel tomorrow during the daytime before the draft starts. It’s not only a suggestion, but an expectation.

  2. StAugBuc Says:

Why mention Glennon? He’s not available in this draft.

  3. StAugBuc Says:

Why mention Glennon? He’s not available in this draft.

  4. Buc1987 Says:

StAugBuc …because he’s getting his Glennon hits in while he still can too. Seeing how he’s confident the Bucs will draft a QB in this draft. I still say no they won’t.

  5. BKNYfootballhead Says:

Joe, your obsession has regretfully made me wonder about just what you’d do with a Buccaneer Johnny Football fathead. Frankly, I can’t image you’d need any instructions to mount it.

  6. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I swear we have some cocky arse posters. I don’t understand constantly criticizing the host of a site we all love. What’s the point?

  7. Chris Says:

Sapp is 100% right. They’re better off getting a wr like Beckham and going Garopplo. Garoppolo is going to be a stud.

  8. rdbucfan Says:

It’s funny that one of the Joe’s believes the Bucks should trade up to #2 (using our 1st & 2nd picks plus Banks) to draft a QB he believes needs 2 years to develop. But doesn’t believe the 3rd round QB that broke NFL records for rookies doesn’t deserve that shot just because Glennon can’t pull like Manziel. Unfreaking believable.

If he gets his wish, he better keep a close eye on Miss Watson because we all know how John can pull.

  9. rdbucfan Says:

    “Bucs” stupid auto correct.

  10. eric Says:

I totally agree I hope like hell they do not draft this kid

  11. Barry Says:

FYI, Mike Mayock likes Glennon, Why does TB seem to think they need a QB when they got MG8? We’ll find out tomorrow what Bucs think of MG8.

  12. Barry Says:

    People listen to Sapp why?

  13. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Barry,

I’m going to make this as simple for you as possible. #1, Mayock isn’t our GM or coach. His opinion really isn’t that important. #2 By all accounts, Glennon is a poor fit for the offense that Tedford wants to run. His offense is reliant on a very quick release, along with mobility from the QB position. I think it’s safe to say Glennon has neither of those. No team is going to fit their system around a 3rd round pick with (at best) moderate results. That’s not a knock on Glennon, just a dose of reality. You can fight the inevitable all you want, but the writing is on the wall, and has been for quite some time. It’s going to be okay.

  14. buc'd Up Says:

    @ Barry

Because you can’t shut him up.

  15. Bobby M. Says:

Speaking of GM killas, your boy Dominik ranked 3rd to last in drafting since 2009….What coach or player could have a career with that track record?

  16. Mathius Says:

What does Mike Mayock know. I mean look at all of these cool pics of Johny Football. All of those unbelievable fine women can’t be wrong.

Just Look at Johny, I mean he runs around all reckless (top 10 tackle blocking why is he running around) and then heaves the ball up as his top ten wide out pulls it down. He is amazzzzzzing. I don’t know why Denver doesn’t trade it all to move up and get him. Their QB is slow and has a weak arm.

With all that, I hope they trade back to the twenties Draft WR Cook he is the next Steve Smith (the good one)and draft Manziel or Carr in the second.

  17. rayjay1122 Says:

I read on another site a possibility of trading back with the Cowboys as they have 11 picks and they have a history of trading up. I am starting to warm up to the idea of getting more picks in this deep draft unless at the 7th pick there is someone too good to pass up.

  18. ruggyup Says:

    @HawaiianBuc
Agree Maycock is not part of Bucs but he is a thoughtful analyst. “By all accounts” about Glennon doesn’t cut it for me. None of us know for a fact what and how Tedford and Lovie want the offense to advance and improve. I was disappointed in the Glennon draft but stunned by his performance with a crap line and crap surrounding cast. Very seldom would I agree with the Sappster but in his evaluation of Mansiel I’m 110% in agreement. Beef, strong, fast, mobile, mean, nasty, take no prisoners beef, that’s my gig for Rd 1.

  19. rayjay1122 Says:

Google buccaneers 7 round mock draft and clicked bleacher report. Interesting takes.

  20. DallasBuc Says:

Sapp said it so it must be the final word, right? I think I was told recently that if Sapp has weighed in on something then there is no argument!
Thanks but I think I’ll wait and find out for myself!

  21. Barry Says:

Mike Glennon is the best QB in this draft. Period. Bucs draft Robison,Mathews, Lewan, or A.Donald at 7. Most of you will be disappointed but it’s the smart move. Long live MG8.

  22. Mr. Patrick Says:

And Sapp said what about Josh Freeman ?

  23. Buc1987 Says:

Barry Glennon strikes again. Say hi to you’re brother for me.

  24. Aaron Says:

Still don’t see why people like Glennon so much – V. Jax bailed him out weekly….he held the ball to long either took a sack or checked down.

Before the mob starts jumping on that comment – “he didn’t have a running game, he didn’t have receivers open” etc…don’t you think L&L would have seen that on the coaches film?

  25. Buc1987 Says:

Aaron…yes I think L&L have seen all of that on tape and know about his lack of weapons around him. That’s why I think they will KEEP Glennon for atleast the 2014 season and they won’t draft a QB in this draft. We’ll see if I get this one right. The odds are against me though lately. At my rate, they draft 2 QB’s after me saying they won’t even draft one.

  26. Maze Says:

As much as I want Manziel I can certainly see it not happening and a guy like Evans being drafted instead. Trading back is looking better and better while picking up some much needed depth. Only hours away from showtime

  27. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @1987,

You may end up being right, but I would be absolutely shocked if so. There’s just way too much smoke. I understand a little pre-draft smoke screening, but not like this. It took Lovie like a minute and a half to find another QB and proclaim him the starter. They’ve invited pretty much every draftable Qb to Tampa for a visit. The GM has said he sees at least one franchise QB in this draft. Now there is these rumors picking up steam that Glennon is going to be traded. This is almost reminiscent of the whole Revis situation. You know it’s going to end, it’s just a matter of when.

  28. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I think if they actually watched the tape, they would see the many many times Glennon missed guys wide open. It’s very funny how people conveniently forget that. You can’t miss home runs in the NFL.

  29. Aaron Says:

I just don’t see why you pay a 35yr old $5mill – if you like the young record breaking rookie you already have on your team. These QBs don’t even have the same game – I will root for Glennon if he’s here – I just want to win games.

The best thing about all of this – we should get our answers by the end of the weekend.

Go Bucs! lets get this right L&L

  30. Mathius Says:

I don’t think folks “Love Glennon” sooo much. I think people are viewing the roster and see larger holes. Check any site that grades the performace of players and you will see Glennon ranks in the middle of QB’s. It is my thought that most fans would like to see the bigger holes filled prior to drafting a QB.

There are 10 teams with lesser QBs and none of them are mentioned to trade up for a QB. Heck, Glennon had a better rookie season than Luck and the Colts aren’t trading up for a QB.

Tedfords O was run by Trent Dilfer , Akili Smith , David Carr , Joey Harrington and Kyle Boller , All of those guys a more similar to Glennon than Johny Boy.

WR, OL, CB, and LB are all bigger needs

  31. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Mathius,

Understand one thing – there is no hole bigger than a Qb. A QB can either make an average team really good, or make a really good team very average. No other position in sports is anywhere near as important. Your chances of winning a championship without a top 10 QB are very low. Yes it could happen, but the chances aren’t very good. The teams that are in the championship hunt every year ALL have great QB’s. There are no exceptions there, unless you go back 20 years.

And no, Glennon did not have a better rookie season than Andrew Luck. I really hope that was a joke. Even if by some twisting of numbers that were to be true, Andrew Luck was a #1 pick. Glennon was a 3rd round pick with a previous regime. No comparison.

And none of those guys are more similar to Mike Glennon than Johnny Football. I’m assuming you are too young to have seen those guys play in college, and assume they all were immobile and statuesque QB’s with long releases. That assumption would be very wrong. That’s a very nice try, but educated minds know better.

  32. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Every time I type “Manziel” on my phone it auto corrects to “bust”. I think Siri may be onto something because both her and Mike Mayock agree.

  33. Tom Says:

Both sport radio stations in Tampa area have negative things to say about MG8. Look! He might be the best QB in this year draft. Nobody in the NFL can perform well under lousy condition. No OL, NO Wr, NO Rb. He got absolutely no time to search for other Wrs beside V jax or T wright. No hole for RB to run. Play action wont work due to no running game. He has to check down most of the time. What can he do? I bet The Great Johnny Football would not last more than two games if he plays behind last year Bucs OL.

  34. Aaron Says:

    Thanks Hawaiian Bucs

Well said – knowing what we know about lovie Smith do we really think he wants to bring that spot light the jf will bring…He is exciting, but I don’t see L&L drafting him…we stay at 7 and Draft ot or trade down with someone that loves Evans…soon to find out. I’ll be in napa hunting for a TV wearing my new bucs shirt!

  35. Jeagan1999 Says:

I’m almost so sick of waiting now that I really don’t even care anymore. If the Bucs choose Johnny Football…so be it. Personally, I would take Mack, Watkins, Robinson, Ebron or Matthews if any of them are available…(or trade down and pick up more picks) but Lovie will choose who he wants. If they do take Manziel I hope he can live up to the considerable hype! I also hope whoever they trade Mike Glennon to (if they do draft Manziel I’m sure Glennon will be gone shortly thereafter) appreciates him more than the new regime..and a lot of the fans around Tampa…do! He seems like a great kid and I think he will be a fine QB for the right team!

So let’s get on with it and see what happens. All we can do is hope that if Johnny Football is a Buc tomorrow night that he doesn’t fail miserably and set the organization back 3-4 years while we search for another “franchise” QB!

  36. Aaron Says:

@ Tom wouldn’t L&L see that on tape? If L&L saw anything the mob sees they don’t grab McCown….here is to the debate being answered

    Go bucs

  37. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“@ Tom wouldn’t L&L see that on tape? If L&L saw anything the mob sees they don’t grab McCown”

    ——

DING DING DING!!!!!! We have a winner! It’s amazing how those who are so in love with Glennon think so highly of their football evaluation. How much coaches film did you watch? What makes you more qualified than Lovie and Licht?

If the organization doesn’t believe in Johnny Football, then please don’t take him. I’ve never met the guy, and probably only watched 30% of his games in college. I do know he absolutely dominated the SEC unlike any other player I’ve ever seen. I know he won a lot of games, and put up ridiculous numbers. I am personally enticed by that, and hopefully if we do draft him it will translate to the NFL.

  38. chipbuc Says:

Im sorry but i cant get out of my mind the play Glennon made against Carolina , where he rolled out to his left and with a player bearing down on him wimped out and threw the ball backwards and danced out of of the players way. It was the worst display of non athleticism i have ever seen from a QB, I just shook my head and said “what the f was that”. Glennon makes Tom Brady look like a gazelle. Glennon wont work in Tedford offense, simple as that!!!!!

  39. Mathius Says:

    Hawaiian,
I agree an above average QB does cover up a lot of holes. However is there a QB better in the draft than any of the current QBs in our division? If your answer is no, then you trade back fill other holes and take the QB in the second.

The Bucs made a mistake in bringing McCown in my opinion, but he has a relationship with Lovie and nepotism happens every where.

Watch some youtube games of Cal. Teddfords O is a 3 step drop to shootgun quick read passing attack. Those are GLennons strenghts, he has no pocket awareness. Manziel has wonderful awareness but not really good at that 3 step drop stuff. Hinze all the scrutiny.

I can’t wait for the Draft I just don’t want to see the Bucs put all ther eggs in one basket by trading up.
    FYI
Dillfer and Glennon each had 3 rushing TDs in college for what its worth.

Draft Luck on your fantasy team next year and see he averages about 225 yards a game throwing and 25 rushing. Johny does that in a quarter against Rice.

  40. Tom Says:

“Aaron” U might be right. Well. On the note,. The Bucs trade do with Lion ,and Pick Derek Carr.

  41. IdahoBucsfan Says:

Joe seems to suffer from some syndrome,.. I bet he drives a Really big truck! I don’t know why every day without fail he goes after Glennon,… but I do have my suspicions! 🙂

  42. Tom Says:

Most ready QB for Complex Offense. D carr Fresno State.

  43. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Mathius,

It’s going to be very hard to get a QB better than the other 3 in our division. We have 3 that I would probably put in the top 10-12 in the league, if not higher. We do have a responsibility to get the best QB we can. They don’t have to be better, but they need to be comparable.

Not sure what you were watching, but Glennon is not that type of QB. He has a slow release, and he is more of an under-center, 5 step drop kind of QB. He does not have anything close to a quick release. Just because he doesn’t have great pocket awareness doesn’t mean he does have a quick release or is good on 3 step drops.

  44. Buc1987 Says:

I think what L&L and Tedford saw on tape was a solid back up at a cheap price that has potential to some day be a decent starting QB with the right coaching. THAT is why they brought in McCown to be the starter…..for now. I’m not part of the MGM, the 1% of the fan base. It’s just where I’m at right now with the new regime.

I say Glennon will be McCown’s back up in 2014. If that happens, you Glennon bashers should not even watch the games if McCown gets replaced by Glennon via injury or poor play, which very well could happen. Then again maybe you should watch those games and learn why L&L kept him as McCown’s back up.

The draft starts tomorrow boys and girls. We’ll see if Glennon is still a Buc come this Sunday.

    Mike Glennon Scouting Report
    By Charlie Campbell

    Strengths:
    Cannon for an arm
    Quick release
    Plus mechanics
    Big pocket presence
    Great height
    Can make all the throws
    Good deep-ball thrower
    Huge upside
    Large hands
Can get hot and dominate in stretches
    Displays a gunslinger mentality
    Book smart

Im gonna go with the expert on the quick release thing

  46. Buc1987 Says:

Cam Newton led the 26th ranked offense and the Panthers won the division.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

Akili Smith, Trent Dilfer, David Carr, Kyle Boller and Joey Harrington. Some of Tedford’s “Franchise QB’s”. I don’t even know the guy much, but I’d be willing to bet if any of those guys were on the board tomorrow coming out of college, he’d tell Lovie to take any one of them.

If they are relying on Tedford to make a QB judgement in this draft, then that should scare the shite out of any Bucs fan.

  48. Tampabaybucfan Says:

One more time….I’m hoping for Sammy @ 7…..not likely, so I’ll take a trade down…or even settle (not bad settlement) for Mike Evans.
Also, If Sammy isn’t there…Robinson, Mack or Matthews work for me. I’m just not thinking we need a QB at 7….OK with Carr later in the first or Garoppolo in 2nd/3rd…..If we trade Glennon, I hope its tomorrow.
    Lets get this $HIT over.

  49. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Mathius,

Casserly also said he isn’t mobile, a statue in the pocket. He also questioned his decision making – another terrible thing for a quick strike offense. So even if you believe the one and only scout that has said he has a quick release, he still doesn’t have the other attributes necessary in Tedford’s offense. Again, we will all see very soon. Just know that if we do draft a QB in the draft, you can guaran-damn-tee I’m going to remind you of it. I would expect you to do the same thing to me. What’s fair is fair.

  50. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @1987,

Yes, Carolina had the 26th best offense in terms of yards, but they were 18th in the one that matters – points.

  51. Buc1987 Says:

Akili Smith, Dilfer, Carr, Boller and Harrington. Some of Tedford’s “Franchise QB’s”. I don’t even know the guy much, but I’d be willing to bet if any of those guys were on the board tomorrow coming out of college, he’d tell Lovie to take any one of them.

If they are relying on Tedford to make a QB judgement in this draft, then that should scare the crap out of any Bucs fan.

  52. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @1987,
First of all, you are speaking in hypotheticals. You don’t have any idea, nor does it matter, what he “would” have done. Second, those are guys he coached, so of course he would be biased. That says nothing on his talent evaluation. Nothing whatsoever. He was a college coach, and a college coach’s responsibility is to get the most out of his players, and to help them get to the next level. There’s been a lot of former college coaches that have passed on their former QB’s at the NFL level. Not sure why you would assume Tedford would be different, especially when you admit you don’t know him.

  53. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Those thinking of trading down and then taking Carr, don’t be so certain he will be there. To me, there are 4 QBs worth taking in the first round. Texans want Bortles, whom I suspect is Tedfords first choice.

If Bortles, Manziel and Bridgewater are off the board, the Bucs need to take Carr because after him the QBs take a dive in potential.

If, by some miracle, both Manziel AND Carr are on the board, Lovie and Licht have a tough choice to make. Carr is the safest bet of the two, but he has a slightly lower potential ceiling. Manziel is the riskier, but has the highest potential ceiling.

Personally, I think Manziel is a diva. Carr is a family man. I prefer Carr at 7.

  54. phil Says:

Sapp is usually wrong so Johnny will be find and Teddy will be a bust.

  55. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

How about Mayock? Is he usually wrong?

  56. Buc1987 Says:

Hawaiian Buc …..”IF” they are relying on Tedford to make a QB judgement in this draft.”

Maybe Tedford can help us find another Dilfer.

  57. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Why do the Glennon haters all use the argument he doesn’t have the (insert trait) necessary for Tedford’s offense? Have any of you wise sages actually seen the offense Tedford is planning to run? Do you have copies of the play book? My guess is most of you are just talking out your as$es about something you’re only guessing at yet insist on calling it a fact. We shall see

  58. Barry Says:

MG8 facts, not projections: 2013 NFL ROY. Set Buccaneer rookie team records. Set rookie NFL records. Would he be afforded another year or two with a chance if he were black? Let me answer for you, Yes.

  59. Bucfan#37 Says:

Glennon is a good player, no matter what the naysayers say.
