Sammy Watkins Is Not A Pipe Dream
May 2nd, 2014Joe knows the following will force those afflicted with the Sammy Watkins Fetish to stand at attention and walk quickly to the nearest bathroom at work for a private moment.
Mike Mayock thinks the Bucs have a prayer of landing Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Yes, you read that correctly.
Queried during his two-hour, one-bathroom-break teleconference yesterday by Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, Mayock was asked what he believes the Bucs should do at No. 7, trade or pick, and who to select?
Mayock said that it’s not out of the question Watkins could fall to No. 7.
Woody Cummings: The Buccaneers, what do you see them doing at seven? Trading down? If they keep it, what is it best for them?
Mike Mayock: I think they’re in a good place. A lot of the teams in the top 10 are talking about trading down because it’s such a good draft, blah, blah, blah.
I think Tampa Bay is in a pretty good place to get a really good football player. One of the two mock drafts I did last night, Sammy Watkins fell to them. From my perspective, what a great pick that would be at seven. You pair him with Vincent Jackson and all of a sudden you help both your quarterbacks, whether it’s [Josh] McCown or [Mike] Glennon or whatever.
If Watkins would fall to them, I think that would be phenomenal.
Now Joe has never been dancing with himself over Watkins because, frankly, Joe couldn’t fathom six teams passing on him. Still can’t. Now if that would happen, then the Bucs probably would be crazy to pass on Watkins. It’s hard for Joe to digest this happening, but who is Joe to cross swords with Mayock?
And Mayock is right, having Vincent Jackson and Sammy Watkins would certainly help out any quarterback, you know, like Johnny Football.

You pair Johnny Football with Vincent Jackson, and suddenly you help the win-loss record, whether Glennon is traded or not.

Unfortunately, no chance he falls to 7. Watkins has been by choice for a few months over anyone, before many really jumped on his bandwagon. Now, I see no possibility of that happening 🙁

Pipe dream
May 2nd, 2014 at 7:19 am
Hahahaha! Good one, Mayock!!!
Robinson
Matthews
Manziel
Watkins
Mack
Clowney
There’s your 1st 6 picks in no particular order.
May 2nd, 2014 at 7:23 am
Sammy @ 7
All that has to happen is for 3 QBs to be picked along with Mack & Clowney & one other player like Robinson or Matthews and Sammy is ours for the pickin’…..
Sammy @ 7

Yes… But if they get Watkins, there is no Johnny Football. Unless something insane happens, that is.

Snook,
If those 6 are gone, then flip a coin for Jake Mathews or Aaron Donald.
May 2nd, 2014 at 8:09 am
Wow Joe, nice article.
It’s not often I read about self-pleasure in the bathroom AND swordcrossing.
May 2nd, 2014 at 8:15 am
Don’t think we can get them both Joe. Now THAT would be a pipe dream.
May 2nd, 2014 at 8:17 am
Rob Ford dream. Not happening. At worst he’s going at #4.
May 2nd, 2014 at 8:28 am
Watkins would be awesome.
With that said no way 3 QBs are picked before Bucs pick.
Watkins is expected to be a Harvin/Torry Smith type player. If drafted I guess the fastest man in the NFL wont be returning kicks. Might not have room for demps at all.
May 2nd, 2014 at 8:29 am
Even despite the bad results Tampa has had with former Clemson super stats I’d still be happy to see the Bucs address a huge need if that unlikely scenario plays out
May 2nd, 2014 at 8:29 am
Super stars^^^
May 2nd, 2014 at 8:38 am
You only need Clowney, Mack, 2 QB’s, and 2 OT’s. He’s a receiver. He could easily be there at #7.
May 2nd, 2014 at 8:40 am
Isn’t it true that on most NFL drafts by the 5th pick or so. One team blows up everybody’s Mock Draft by picking someone or doing a trade no body guessed and they picked someone that wasn’t in the top 10 list by most people?

Greg couldn’t even lose right.’

Love Watkins if available (Tedford and Lovie seem to be coveting speed on Offense and he best fits the bill best, guy is a game changer).
If not Watkins, then best OL available or trade back and get Anthony Barr and another pick for OL; Barr is really starting to intrigue me. Great raw athlete who seems to strike better on hits than Mack does and he fits what we do better in our Tampa-2- 4-3 defense, hell, he used to be a RB at his size!

All this “Bucs taking Johnny Football with the Seventh Pick” may be smoke to get somebody above them to take JF instead of Watkins

TampaBayBucFan
I have said it before I admire your consistency with Sammy @ 7 this post must of made your day! Enjoy!
if Watkins falls to 7 it’s a no brainier unless JF(2) is there.
I am leaning more and more they take a big tackle if available. I keep going back to the fact of deep receivers and the philosophy of building front to back will ultimately prevail. Offensive line play was as horrible as the qb play last year so if the qb you want is not there take the lineman. Again you can only go up from 32nd.
May 2nd, 2014 at 10:40 am
Right on! Pick up Watkins at #7 and Johnny Football in the second round!
May 2nd, 2014 at 10:46 am
Watkins could help Johnny Football? So, Watkins ‘falls’ to 7, and Johnny Football ‘falls’ to the late 30’s?!
May 2nd, 2014 at 10:59 am
LOL @ Joe.
You know you’re going to get everyone’s panties in a bunch with that one.
Seriously, though. The only way I could see that being REMOTELY possible would be if someone went Tonya Harding on one of them.
In the event that JF starts to slip, there’s NO WAY he makes it past Jerruh @ 16.
May 2nd, 2014 at 11:00 am
johnny football has as much chance of falling to the second round as Glennon does being on t he opening day roster. ZERO
May 2nd, 2014 at 11:05 am
Would love to see the Bucs trade up to get back in the first round and draft someone.
May 2nd, 2014 at 11:10 am
It’s just not fair to get a man hopes up like this.
May 2nd, 2014 at 11:45 am
@couch fan we have been saying this for the longest. Watkins is instant offense. Unless teams are thinking its a deep draft and we can get the receiver we want that will make an impact later. This could happen! Get excited man!
May 2nd, 2014 at 11:59 am
Lol I’m excited. Just not Watkins excited until/unless it actually happens, then I’ll be jumping through the roof!

@Couch Fan Says:
“…It’s just not fair to get a man hopes up like this…”
LOL, I so agree…

Please sweet baby jesus let him fall to us.

Sammy! Sammy! Sammy!…Watkins is the missing piece; I believe he will slide to us @7, Some things are just meant to be. Day 1 Telford used the term “speed n space” and Sammy Watkins is the very definition of that…
Imo he’s the best “football player” in this draft…U could literally line Watkins up at ANY! skill position ANY!…heck he could probably play defense if they asked him too…I love this kid to death I wouldn’t even be mad if we traded a few spots to get him…This kid is a difference maker…when the ball is in his hands he has a Adrian Peterson type drive to get to the endzone that’s amazing to watch; that my friends, can’t be coached…
I all honesty, no matter who we pick at 7 I feel like Lovie has us pointed in the right direction; the stars seem to be aligning for this franchise…We have a young thirsty/hungry team…Our HC, GM, OC/Co.staff, etc all have excellent resumes, the sky is the limit for this football team…I expect us to come out the gate fast & furious…I cant ever recall being more excited about a season…PLaYOffS! Dare I say PLaYOffS!…I just wanna win some friggin games…lol
Let’s shock the world…Go BuCS!
