Lovie Smith isn’t the only guy who knows how to march into the playoffs with a subpar quarterback and a second-rate offense. On the backs of the No. 1 ranked defense in the NFL, Chucky and his 2005 Buccaneers won the NFC South with an 11-5 record.
Sadly, Tampa Bay and Chris Simms were exposed quickly in the playoffs on a cold January day in Tampa.
Count Joe among Bucs fans who don’t want to see a talent-challenged young quarterback and/or a journeyman veteran leading the offense, like Simms and Brian Griese did in 2005. Joe wants a quarterback who could one day be elite.
Nowadays, of course, Chucky studies all things quarterbacks, and he’s determined Derek Carr, Aaron Murray are his top QBs in the 2014 NFL Draft, and A.J. McCarron belongs in the mix.
Chucky explained on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week, and Joe will summarize: Carr’s arm is out of this world. Murray executed all kinds of difficult plays and throws — out of the huddle — through four seasons at Georgia. And McCarron was a master of his system.

Chucky views Jimmy Garoppolo as more of a project quarterback because the wildly up tempo Eastern Illinois system stunted his development, per Chucky.
As Joe’s written previously, and many months ago, Joe’s a big fan of Murray and he’s likely a great value in the fourth round coming off knee surgery. However, Joe is still all-in with Johnny Football and Teddy Bridgewater as his first-round choices.

Again. Why Bridgewater????! He’s a shrimp without the benefits of J.Football. The difference between Bridgewater and Carr is negligible at best (for Teddy)and Carr can move. And throw. Accurately. Without the ball waffling like Peyton Manning’s these days.
Joe, get off the Bridgewater train. He is going to bust. It’s almost a guarantee.

I watched a show on Carr’s older brother, David. Poor guy was clobbered to death behind an awful O line. He just never had a chance to develop. I dont think that will be the case if we pick up Derek after adding to the O line. But he’ll probably go mid ways in the 1st.

I think if Derek Carr didn’t have a brother who ended up being a colossal bust, he would be the clear cut number one QB in this draft. I still think he’s going to the Browns at number four, and that Cleveland will bring his brother in to be third string. I just don’t see Carr sliding into the 20’s in this draft. Scouts and GMs have more resources, connections, etc then any of the mock draft authors, and I think it’s the mock draft guys who have been all over the place regarding Carr during this never ending buildup to the draft. All it takes is one team to make the move, and if it’s not Cleveland or Oakland, I think it’ll be the Bucs at seven.

I agree^^ i remembering reading Tedford has ties with Carr and from what I hear he can throw. Not Mike Glennon Arm strength. Serious arm strength(and good touch on lead throws) mike Evans at 7 and a move up for 4 and this team is playoff bound for years to come

Off subject but couldn’t resist…Bleacher report has us giving up TWO 3rd round picks to move up two slots to trade with Oakland to take Evans and THEN taking a DL in rd 2. My 5yr old grandson wouldn’t make that trade!!!

Btw, Connor Shaw, Murray, or David Fales would be nice late round pick ups. Mark my words, Connor Shaw will make it at worse as a great back up….but im also in the minority who’s calling Clowney a bust in waiting…..I know what I saw as a Gamecock fan. I was also calling for Freefree’s head way before it happened, and for Schiano and “Rock star’s” heads too, about 4 games in last year…..but what do I know, I know I’ll stick with my gut feeling about things. Im rarely wrong when I do.

Joe u leaving me scratching my head sometimes. I love ur website but ur evaluation of talent leaves me dumbfounded. Mark this down Aaron Murray will be a better NFL qb than Johnny Dbag. If I’m wrong I will come back on ur website and eat crow. To me the perfect draft for the Bucs would b Evans on first round then Murray in the second or third rd w a starting caliber guard w either second or third. If u like Murray I’m all over him in the second. I don’t c that as a reach at all. Plus could u imagine the hometown kid being our franchise qb and taking us to the promised land? Don’t know if u saw grudens qb camp w Murray but it sure seems to me that Murray would b the kind of leader that any player would run thru the proverbial wall for.

The only 2 in the draft that I would get excited about being the Bucs QB is Bortles or McCarron…. Any of the other guy, I will be hoping for better WR and a better O-line to help them look better than they are…. Especially tiny Teddy or Manic Manziel…

Griese was a journeyman? If I remember correctly he had started the year out 5-0 before his knee injury. I’ll take that any day of the week compared to the “talent” we’ve had since him.

Thinking Derek Carr will bust just because his brother did makes as much sense as expecting Aaron Rodgers little brother (whatever his name is) to be a franchise quarterback. I have no choice but to hope the people making the selection know what they are doing and are a heck of a lot smarter than me, and most of you. Go Bucs. Manziel, Carr, Bridgewater, Murray, I don’t care. Just make it work.

Real good stuff this past week, Joes…. One giant game of poker being played between teams with a lot of interesting QB prospects in the pot. If L&L have one they just have to have, ok…. As long as they don’t reach. A lot of great prospects will be there at seven and it will be the decision under the microscope for this new regime.

I want Carr myself, as I’ve been saying pretty much most of the time.
However, after watching the Gruden QB Camp with Johnny Manziel I am more convinced than ever that I could live with Johnny being drafted to Tampa.
It wasn’t his answers to questions in the interview room, it was after that, on the field. That last play. Gruden gave him a bunch of directions for one play, and Johnny did the play perfectly.
Gruden even told the WRs to try to confuse Johnny. Nothing stopped the kid.
In the end, I’m still wanting Carr, but as I said, I could live with Johnny being picked.
HATE the idea of Bridgewater.

Bonzai you have just proven you are high on crack!! On the Gruden QB with Johnny, they were duplicating the play against Bama. The play where he runs into his line, fumbles the ball and throws a TD to the back of the end zone. That was a busted play.

@MadMax- I agree with you on Clowney. There’s nothing about this guy mentally that I like. He throttled down in a year which he should’ve picked it up, and now he won’t “interview”/work out for prospective teams that are interested. RED FLAGS!!!!!!!
With the QBs, I like McCarron and frankly, can’t figure why he isn’t in the conversation with the other prospects.

Just goes to show that no matter what position you take, it is still a gamble.
It’s possible he will bust, and it’s just as possible that he is intentionally trying to fall a couple picks to get with a team he wants to play for.
I know if I were being drafted, I would want to play for my favorite team, even if it meant a smaller paycheck.

I agree about the red flags though.
Lovie might take him anyway if he falls that far. I think he took 2 linemen during his 9 years in chicago (in first round). And he was missing 3 first round picks.

i’m not willing to predict who the bucs like or will get, but i will predict that whoever he is and whenever we take him, the bucs will state that he is the QB they had #1 on their board all along.

Bridgewater will not bust. He threw poorly at his Pro Day in large part because he abandoned his trademark glove. He’ll wear the glove in the NFL…problem solved!

I agree with Chucky on those 3 but would stay away from QB in 1st round and take Murray or McCarron in 3rd round. Two guys who have won and performed at high level in SEC will transition to NFL much smoother. Need to draft a stud def player in 1st(Mack/Mosely) and take guard in 2nd. Not exciting but necessary.

The Bucs have 3 “premium” picks. If Wadkins or Mack are available at 7, which they won’t be, then make one of them the pick. Otherwise, with 4 premium pick needs (WR, QB, G and DE/OLB) and only 3 premium picks, they need to trade down in the 1st and pick up another pick. That is the only way we have a great chance at adding starter caliber talent at these 4 positions out of this draft.

McCarron is the most overrated guy in the draft. Nothing scares me more than a guy that doesn’t make mistakes but makes no wow plays. Against college players, there should be wow plays and he has none. Every other QB slated to go in the first 2 rounds have wow plays in college. He decided not to show up for the Senior Bowl and Garappolo made the most of it. I’ll take Carr or Garappolo over him every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I would be thrilled if we get Carr or Bortles, but I would take any of the top four QBs in the first round if Tedford says he can develop them into a Franchise QB.

I really like Carr. Notice how L&L haven’t brought up his name very often? Hmmmm. But I don’t know if we should take him at 7. Trade down a ways then try to get him.
Carr’s brothers failure in the NFL has no bearing on the way Derrick will play.
