Would Donte Moncrief of Ole Miss be a good third-day draft pick?
Yes, many Bucs fans are all worked up about the Bucs drafting a wide receiver. And this was before Mike Williams’ brother (allegedly) decided to go all Ginsu and knife Williams in the thigh Sunday.
The majority of those same fans are fixated on the shiniest lure in the pond, and that is Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins. But indefatigable Xs and Os guy Doug Farrar, whose specialties are breaking down film 20 hours a day and sniping about football announcers an hour a day (Joe truly believes Farrar wants to seal club Phil Simms for reasons Joe isn’t quite sure), thinks the Bucs might be better off going for value in a draft that is so deep at receiver. Joe agrees. Joe was told by an NFL general manager that quality starters can be had in the third round.
Now Joe has been on the Allen Robinson bandwagon, if he falls to the third round. Robinson is projected as a mid- to low-second round pick. Farrar believes Bucs general manager Jason Licht would be wise to select Donte Moncrief from Ole Miss.

Let’s say the Bucs — who probably won the 2014 free agency period — feel sure enough about their potential position in the NFC South to release receiver Mike Williams, whose off-field issues just keep piling up. Perhaps in that case, they’d look for an unheralded player who’s shown up well on tape at times and has interesting potential.
Moncrief is such a player. He’s not talked about as a top-five player at his position in this draft class, and that’s understandable. There are times when he doesn’t fight for the ball as much as you’d like, he struggles to gain separation in relation to his timed speed and he needs to string together better moments more consistently. But in the right offense, and without the demands of being a No. 1 receiver, Moncrief could help out with his route development and tough blocking.
Joe hasn’t seen enough of Moncrief to make any determination, but from what Farrar writes, it sounds as if Moncrief is a project. If that is the case, then Moncrief might be a third-day draft pick.
With the draft so deep at wide receiver, Joe somehow doubts Licht will draft a project wide receiver in the third round. If the Bucs are going to draft a wide receiver, then they’ll want a guy who can step in and contribute right away, not sit in the background and learn the ropes.

Jackson and Williams are a fine receiving tandem. There will be plenty speedy third receivers available. Using a first round pick on a receiver doesn’t really upgrade your team substantially.
O-line, d-line, QB, or Khalil Mack do.

Get us some speed and playmaking ability at the position…. Something that our franchise has a tough time finding at this position for some reason.. V-jax is probably the only exception, but then again he ain’t as fast as he used to be anymore..

More rules. This one is going to lead to a LOT of penalties too.
They may as well just eliminate blocking and tackling at this point. Sooner or later, all these rule changes will effect the ratings.

I wonder if you drafted best player available every single round if it’s remotely possible to draft 6 defensive ends. ..lol . Unfortunately, usually after the 1st round that philosophy takes a back seat. It now becomes a draft by positional need which sometimes causes teams to pass up on better ranked talent because they want to fill a certain position by need. I think Moncrief would be one of those drafted by need which is a compliment to his talent.

The Bucs will continue to shore up the middle and add get a edge rusher too. WR is an easier position to fill in later rounds.

Hmmmmmm, there appears to be a disgruntled speedy receiver in Philly. In a perfect world trade Williams for Jackson straight up.
I’m kind of in the same category with most of you guys. We have two posession WRs. We need that speedster in the slot, or at least someone who can get open and catch.

There is a potential randy moss in this years draft at a but because so many people read this blog I don’t want to put his name out there. I am just hoping that L&L are looking at all the schools even the small ones!

We haven’t had many prospects like Josh Huff “EVER” wear a BUCS uniform. This young man would terrorize the NFC South for years to come. (baring injury)

Th red flag there is “struggles to gain separation.” We’ve got enough of those already…pass. IMO we’ve got our taller receiving threats (VJ and Wright)…what we need is a guy who can run polished routes and generate significant YAC.

I watched the Huff highlights all the way through. Looks like he specializes in getting tackled immediately after his catch. He only broke away after wide open catches. Yeah he made a lot of catches in those two videos but he doesn’t look all that special to me.

I think they’re going after Sammy – Joe. They had a chance to address that in free agency and didn’t. I think that’s the writing on the wall.
