Josh Freeman Is No Matt Ryan

May 27th, 2009

It’s been a long time since Joe had a logic class in college. Joe knows there’s a term for the following, he just can’t remember it.

Vacation Man of BSPN.com is making — Joe’s term here — a giant leap on faith to claim the Bucs could duplicate what the Dixie Chicks did last year.

In answering quetions to his mailbag, a reader asks Vacation Man about the Bucs immediate future. Vacation Man invokes the Dixie Chicks of 2008 as reason to hope the Bucs have a decent season.

Curt in Sautee-Nacoochee writes: Hey Pat, love your blog. With the Bucs in transition this year(rebuilding),and a tough schedule, I’m thinking of dropping my NFL Sunday Ticket.I am also trying to tighten our financial belt. Does this make me a fairweather fan? Or a frugal one? I have supported the Bucs since 1976.but I don’t feel very excited this year. What say you? Keep up the great reporting.

Vacation Man: Living in the Tampa area, I hear this a lot. Some of my friends have held season tickets for a long time, but haven’t renewed. The economy is certainly playing a role and that’s understandable. But I think a lot of fans just don’t know what to expect from the Bucs with a new coaching staff and, pretty much, a new roster. That makes sense. I don’t know what to make of the Bucs, either. But anything is possible in the NFL. At this time a year ago, just about everyone thought the Atlanta Falcons would be horrible and they ended up in the playoffs.

Simply put, the Bucs won’t end up like the Dixie Chicks because Bucs quarterback bust-in-waiting Josh Freeman is not Matt Ryan. Not even remotely close. A rookie quarterback like Ryan comes around once a decade, maybe. The likes of a rookie taking the NFL by storm like Ryan will become even rarer because, unlike Ryan, most college quarterbacks now play in a spread-option offense which is as foreign to the NFL as cricket.

Second, also unlike Ryan, so many quarterbacks are coming out after their junior seasons. Ryan, playing in an NFL-style offense at Boston College, stayed the full four years.

Vacation Man’s argument is like Joe saying, because his best friend in high school almost married a cheerleader, Joe will come home tonight to find a scantily clad Jamie Hanna awaiting him since Evan Longoria will be in Cleveland.

Sadly, ain’t happening.

Montana is no Marino, Marino is no Young, Young is no Brady, Brady is no Manning, Manning is no Montana. What is this article really saying? The Bucs aren’t the Falcons, the Falcons aren’t the Bucs.
Truth is, everyone doesn’t know a lot (except Jamie Hanna is smokin’ hot) and we won’t know what these players\teams can do until they put the pads on and play some games.

Enough with the BUST IN WAITING CRAP! 2 months of premature name calling is enough. Hes a rookie, let him be a rookie! I could easily make the arguement that this kid has a better chance to succeed than the over rated Sanchez or the poor bastard that went to the Lions. Let Freeman at least get to his first training camp before you start labeling this kid.
