The Bucs should lean on Tedford’s assessments
There is no denying that the likely/rumored trade of overpaid Texans quarterback Matt Schaub to the Raiders should put a bounce in the step of any Bucs fan who believes a more promising QB option is needed
Joe is in that camp. Banking on Josh McCown having the greatest season(s) of his life at 35 years old — in a brand new offense — is a bet Joe wouldn’t have the stones to make, if Joe were leading the Bucs’ regime.
Did quarterbacks guru and Lovie’s hand picked offensive mastermind Jeff Tedford really agree to come to the NFL after all these years only to get creative and innovative with Josh McCown and/or Mike Glennon? That’s another tough concept for Joe.
Assuming the Schaub deal goes down, there’s no reason to believe the Raiders will draft a QB at with their No. 5 overall pick.
Why? Because the Raiders coaching regime is on thin ice and in survival mode. Their best chance of earning another year is reviving Schaub in Greg Olson’s offense and drafting one of the non-QB, quick-fix beasts on the board.
Atlanta won’t draft a QB at No. 6, so the Bucs’ odds of drafting a top QB prospect at No. 7 seemingly have improved. This gives Joe a warm and fuzzy feeling.
Yes, Houston (No. 1), Jacksonville (No. 3) and Cleveland (No. 4) all need quarterbacks. But will each of them take a member of what’s now being called the Big 3, [Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Football and Blake Bortles]?
Joe thinks there’s a great shot one of those QBs is on the board for the Bucs. Joe believes this very much is Jeff Tedford’s call. If he’s identified one of those QBs to have “franchise” potential, then Joe’s can’t imagine a scenario in which Lovie doesn’t follow the guidance of his handpicked offensive maven.

Joe, why would this be? We brought in McCown and Glennon is a better backup/prospect than the Raiders have….
You are asking us to draft a QB but not expecting them to…..makes little sense to me.
Three reasons: 1) Schaub will be earning a massive salary, double McCown. 2) Raiders coaching staff isn’t in future-building mode, unlike the Bucs’. 3) They’re the Raiders. –Joe

We don’t need a QB in the first round. These teams need a QB more than we do and if they let anyone of those QB’s pass we should do the same

Lovie will be tempted to draft a defensive player if one falls to the 7th spot. Otherwise a QB could be in play. Will the QB that Love and Tedford covet be on the board when they pick? It’s safe to say Tedford doesn’t have an equal grade for the top three. I don’t think they’ll take a QB just because.

I love this Site. One thing Our GM said in a bspn story when asked about drafting a franchise quarterback, he said I see a franchise quarterback in this draft and it’s not one you guys are thinking of referring to the big three. I never see this mentioned here. I don’t think we’re going quarterback in the first round.

I read that as well. And if Tedford was being honest, then you are right. But its also a possibility what Tedford said was a smoke screen and they do plan on drafting a QB with the 7th pick. So in other words, who the heck knows, lol

It will be unfortunate if some of the top 6 teams do not reach for these questionable QB’s in the top of the draft. Then the good players will not get pushed down to the Bucs. Right now Lovie and Licht are worried. That is why everyone heard the smokescreen of trading Glennon so some team will foolishly trade up to #7. Hope it works out.

Irrelevant. This doesn’t prevent them from drafting a QB. At all. Schaub is over the hill and a stop gap at best. This changes nothing in regards to thier

Have you been paying attention this offseason Joe? 10 free agent signings that could potentially become starters. A 34 year old new starting QB? The Bucs are in win-now mode, not build the future mode. Build the future mode involves the draft primarily.
3) They’re the Raiders.
Funny story, but we have the same amount of playoff wins since January 2003 as the Raiders: Zero. We can’t put other teams down as being “The Raiders” or “The Browns”. We aren’t that much better at this point.

I think Carr will be tha selection. Let him develop on playing from under center, while learning tha offense. We might as well had resigned Freeman if we draft Manziel. Im pretty sure Jackson and Williams are drooling for jump balls

None of these QBs are going to be the savior. A wasted pick if they grab one in the first round. Except for Bortles, none of these guys should even be considered in the first round. If this were several years back when 1st round rookie contracts were based on draft order then these three would be a reach in the first round. I hope the Bucs layoff these guys and grab us an automatic playmaker. I don’t want us spending a first round pick on a guy who might not even make it off the bench all season.
No matter how Joe spins it, if we select one and they flame out, I personally will hold Joe responsible. I can hear Joe now. “Who me”? I didn’t make them select a QB. No …but you were behind it all offseason. Please, “NO” QB with our first pick. None of these guys will ever be better than 4th best in our division. Maybe Bortles, but he’ll be the first one taken.

I really think that Johnny Football will prove all the doubters wrong. The kid just wins. If he can stay healthy then I think the league needs to be on watch. As much as I hope we can get him, I don’t think he will be there. That being said I think the franchise QB in this draft could be Garrapolo out of Eastern Illinois. Played in a lower conference but up ridiculous numbers. I think he would be a solid 2nd round pick

I still like Mettenberger from LSU. He throws like Tom Brady, and none of these other guys do. It says a lot that he learned to change his mechanics before last season. Knock on him is staring down receivers, but I haven’t seen that.
pro-day for LSU is late (Apr. 9), he should be back enough from injury to throw I think.
Because of the injury and the way the wind is blowing he’s been put at a 3rd 4th or 5th rounder. I see the Bucs using a 2nd rounder on him, assuming he stays under the radar.

I still don’t think they take a QB with the 7 pick. I think it will be later. Remember what Licht said “yes, I think there are franchise Qb’s in this draft, but they may not be the ones your thinking of.” There’s a reason they didn’t want to give up the 3rd pick.

Maybe the Bucs will draft Manziel if he is there at the 7th pick. Who knows what will happen? It would’nt surprise me. That could be two blown 1st round picks in a row, or a stroke of genius depending on his impact in the NFL. It could be a chance worth taking. It really does’nt seem like it would be a Lovie move.

I’d rather go bpa then go Mettenburger/McCaron/Murray later on. If we can trade back then draft ebron or Donald, (I’m a Sammy Watkins dreamer but he has Raiders written all over him.) Mike Evans wouldn’t be bad, shoot he could learn from his older clone.

The big three?…lol. Blake Freebow is simply terrible while Teddy and Johnny aren’t ready. I suspect draft day will prove just how little the NFL thinks of these QBs.

If they are dead set on a QB, try to trade back a little, obtain a couple extra picks, then pick Carr. I know everyone wants to trade back but this could show if Licht is worthy of the GM title. If they can’t trade back, pick BAP at 7 then get your QB in 2nd rnd.

Reports are he was better than Bortles or Bridgewater.
People always say trade down like it is as easy as snapping your fingers. Not in a deep draft like this. Especially if the top QB’s are off the board when the bucs pick.

Carr had the flu during his pro day and did such a good job he shot upward in the rankings.
They interviewed him afterward. I’m starting to really like the kid.
I would still take MAnzeil over him, but if Johnny is gone and say Bortles is there? Tough choice now.

more QBs = more trade down opportunities. it’d be awesome if at least 2 among bridgewater, manziel, and bortles is still on the board at 7, it means a team will need to jump above minnesota to get one of those guys.

Carr selection reminds me of the Freeman selection.. RAH and DOM picked Freeman cause Rah had relationship with him. Carr and Tedford sounds like the same ordeal. I guess you put yourself on the line when draft a QB that high..

History says there is very very little chance that we select a QB in the first round. Lovie and Licht have 11+ QBs taken in drafts during their tenure as coach/scout/player-personnel and not one of those QBs was taken in the 1st round. I believe there was only one QB taken as early as the 2nd round. At this point, Joe would be betting that Licht and Lovie are pushovers and were never successful in lobbying their employers to take a QB in the first. With this many drafts between them there are only two possible scenarios:
1) They believe QBs are a better value in the later rounds
or
2) They could never convince the GM to draft a 1st round QB.
Now considering how “convincing” Licht and Lovie were in attracting loads of Free Agents, I highly doubt the latter scenario.

All of this goes to show how proactive Smith has been during this time. He did not want to be forced to take a quarterback that he was not sure of because let’s face it, all of the first round quarterbacks have question marks and there is no Andrew luck type player. McCown was the best of the free agent class and the bucs got him allowing the bucs flexibility to let the draft come to them. I feel better and better about the position we are in as opposed to the last regime. I agree with the growing point that none of these quarterbacks have separated themselves from the pack and there is a growing belief that a quarterback just as good can be had in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. keep up the good work bucs.

I want an edge rusher or a MLB at 7, if they don’t trade back. I like AJ McCarron on the 3’rd round. I think he will the best of the 4 unless Manziel can live up to his upside potential. And His girl is so hot. I miss Carmella Garcia!!!

I always assumed the idea of mock drafts is to predict who the team will actually pick, not who we want them to pick.
Therefore, anyone thinking the pick will be Watkins, please…do the research on Lovie Smith and tell me how many WRs he picked in the first round during his 9 years as head coach of the Bears.

I know I only have an eighth grade education (sorry, Harry. I couldn’t help it), but my math shows that three QBs taken by three teams will equal ‘zero’ QBs. If they all *need* a QB, as you say, then there’s a very strong likelihood, they will take one. The caveat, to this scenario, is the possibility that those teams (and many others) haven’t bought into the hype, and will not take a second round player with a first round pick. And if that is the case, do you believe that Lovie/Licht are not as smart as the rest of the league?

But after the year Matty Ice just had (4-12), you can honestly say that Atlanta “won’t” draft a QB?. At least Glennon has the excuses of being a rookie, having second rate support players, and third rate coaching (or was it third rate players and second rate coaches).
While I doubt that Atlanta will draft a QB, I am certainly not willing to say they “won’t”.
