Donald Penn Blasts Bucs’ New Regime

One selling point in the recent sales marathon at One Buc Palace was noted by Bucs general manager Jason Licht. He expressed that free agents have so much respect for head coach Lovie Smith. One player who isn’t in that club is Donald Penn.
The former Bucs left tackle and current Raiders offensive lineman took to the SiriusXM NFL Radio airwaves last night, just a few hours after inking his new deal with the Raiders, and under no uncertain terms let it be known how angry he is at Smith and Licht for booting him.
It wasn’t so much that Penn was released that irked him. Penn admitted that is part of the “business.” But what rankled Penn was how his release, after eight hard years of work and over 100 consecutive starts, was conducted as if he was a lowly landscaper at One Buc Palace.
To hear Penn speak, Licht never even attempted to reach out to Penn’s camp in order to rework his contract and allow Penn a chance to remain on the team, so Penn told Alex Marvez and Gil Brandt, co-hosts of “Late Hits.”
“The way Tampa did me left a bad taste in my mouth,” Penn said. “I kind of wish they were on the schedule, but they are not. I still appreciate my eight years there. I appreciate the owners and everyone that gave me a great opportunity. I built a relationship there. The way they did it at the end, it wasn’t right in my book.
“I’m a grown man and they could have treated me like a grown man. It’s part of the business and there is a way to do business but I didn’t like the way that they did it. … I’ve talked to Lovie twice since he’s had the head coaching job and that was a month before free agency started. I talked to the o-line coach [George Warhop]; I talked to the o-line coach about two weeks before the start of free agency started and everything was great. It was good. They were telling me they looked forward to working with me.
“Then I start seeing all of these reports that they are bringing in [Anthony] Collins for a visit. It is still in my head that they are bringing Collins in to play a different position because they had cut Davin [Joseph]. Then, that morning, the day they cut me, my phone was blowing up, that Collins agreed to a deal and how did I feel about that? I didn’t say anything because I didn’t know anything. I hadn’t heard anything from the Bucs.”
In fact, Penn said, it wasn’t until roughly 10 minutes before the Bucs held a press conference introducing Collins to the area that he learned he had been cut. The full details are in the recording below by just clicking on the orange arrow.
Also, Marvez asked Penn if he was going to lobby Raiders owner Mark Davis and Raiders’ brass to bring in Josh Freeman as the next Raiders’ quarterback, Penn chuckled and punted on the question.

I still believe that we should have kept or keep some of the starters just to have some depth. I know that I am not a GM or head coach but depth can separate you from 12-4 and 4-12.

I didn’t like it when they cut Penn or Joseph but Penn especially. I think both of these guys can still play. I have no problem with them signing Collins but we should have kept Penn because you can’t have enough good offensive lineman.

We’ll look at that not everyone is on love with Lovie nor feels like he treats them like grown men. They probably should have seen if they could have restructured Penn’s contract. He earned that much from being a good teammate and solid player except last year

Even though it is a business, Licht and Smith really blew it here. They couldn’t even pick up a phone and let Penn know their thoughts? That is totally bush. The guy has been here for 8 years!
I was telling a buddy that seemed very unprofessional to have to big news conferences to bring in their new signees, but only gave Jospeh and Penn a single paragraph thanking them for their service?
Pretty apparent that Licht and Smith trying to make a big splash. Glennon better see the writing on the wall. The new regime seems to have a master plan and he is not part of it

I don’t like how they’re doing this, at least let them fight for their jobs. I think Lovie might be a little cocky, it kind of reminds me of what Matt Millen did when he first arrived in Detroit. Hopefully they know what they’re doing!!

D. Penn really you didn’t know you could have been on the chopping block after your effort last year. You still had no idea when Lovie stated that our line is getting payed way to much to the worst offense in the NFL. Not even when you heard D. JOSEPH got cut. Intresting. Belive me J. Freeman crossed the Raiders off his list of landing spots once he knew you will be playing left tackle.

All I know is Collins better play lights out. Penn had a down year but it was on an atrocious team, terrible oline as a whole and garbage QB.
I am with Joe that Penn was not the problem. Hearing all this sends up red flags to me about the the regimes player evaluation process. Collins better be great.

That conversation that you just heard may have been the reason that Penn was not offered a job at a reduced salary. Penn is vocal and has influence in the Bucs locker room. Penn’s words were “Damn, Damn, Damn” tweeted right after Davin Joseph was released. They may have felt that Penn’s future may best rest with another team.
I liked Penn as I did Joseph. I don’t think either was released out of spite or anger and I believe they may have not told Penn immediately because they were trying to trade him. I know nothing in Lovie’s or Licht’s background that suggest they would operate inappropriately.

@reezy – you can’t keep those salaries as depth. Depth gets paid far less. People might take a pay cut to stay but not that big of a pay cut.
Penn’s response is not surprising. He’s a weak minded person. Him tweeting those pictures to quiet the “haters” was weak. The haters wouldn’t have had anything to say if he had the drive to constantly be driving to greatness which means he wouldn’t let his weight get out of control every year. Penn is a dangerous mix of narcissistic and insecure while not having the discipline to follow through with what it takes to be the best he can be at his craft. Derrick Brooks had a touch of that, same with Jerry Rice and Tom Brady. Difference between Penn and those great players is the discipline part. Those great players were constantly fighting those insecurities but they fought them by always working to get better at their craft. Penn likes to rest on his laurels until someone brings attention to him being vulnerable. The greats don’t let you think that they could be replaced, Penn would rather just shut people up after they’ve started questioning him. Weak

This stuff happens everyday to real hard working Americans that barely can support their families. where people seem to be treated as a number rather than an individual. Unfortunately in your case the writing was on the wall. After what you put on tape last year, you and your handlers had to know that your job was in jeopardy, especially after you aired your malcontent about JF5’s release, and then seemingly (maybe on purpose) played worse after that. The new regime is assembling the team they want. They’re cutting talented players and bringing in players that hopefully will pan out. Lovie will take some early criticism if his team doesn’t perform. Changes had to be made. Time will tell if they’re the right changes.

Here are some facts not in dispute. Penn was paid 6.33mil in 2013 and was scheduled to make 7.33mil in 2014.
The Redskins offered Penn a contract as a RT, not LT. Penn refused the offer!
Penn signed a two-year, $9.6 million contract with the Raiders. The deal contains $4.2 million guaranteed or 4.8mil/yr.
For a frame of reference, the Raiders offered Roger Saffold (failed physical) a five year contract at 42.5mil with 21mil guaranteed or 8.5mil/yr.
It seems the market agreed with the Bucs evaluation of Penn’s value.

Love Penn. Was a true bucs but they don’t owe him nothing. He already collected insane money last year for a pityful season. If the new regime think it’s best for the team then be it. I feel a lot more embarassed by LVD collecting pocket change when he dominates the game as he does.

No were in the corporate world do your bosses call you up ahead of time and say “hey man, we’re thinking about firing you and bringing someone younger in to replace you. just gonna let you know a couple weeks in advance.” Who does that???
I guess Penn is confused how they could cut him after he had tweeted out that picture of him working out in the gym lifting that 135 lbs over his head, with a caption like “motivated”. lol!
The only guys on this team that were safe coming into this new regime was GMC, Lavonte, and Martin… That’s it! L&L are wanting to clean house. Not necessarily because the guys on the team aren’t talented, but they want to completely reshape the environment. That’s a lot harder to do with a roster full of guys that have been here losing for so long.

Whereas, with the rest of us, we learn at a young age that not everything in life goes the way we want. In the normal world, we have letdowns and get “dissed” on a daily basis. There was always a worry he would Balloon up to 400lbs in the off-season and we all know his tape wasn’t that of a top 10 player and he talks too much.
Has everyone forgot when he got PUNKED by Jared Allen on national TV? You can’t have a leader that gets punked like that…If your “Leader” crumbles… What is the rest of the team going to do?

Penn didn’t play one snap for Lovie or Light…They didn’t owe him anything. Their job was to evaluate a 4-12 roster and make the necessary changes for future success.

I think they didn’t tell him until they had exhausted all efforts to trade him. Thus the delay from the Collins signing and the release of Penn.

Nothing personal Penn just business. You and Joseph don’t fit the bill,of agile zone blocking lineman that can get to the,2nd and maybe 3rd level to block. The late call or being left n the dark is always because of the plan B favtpr. They’d love to upgrade the scheme fit an change Penn out for Collins but if Collins falls thru or do e any sign u can’t go back an say ok Penn well keep u now cuz plan A fell thru. Then Penn would have all the leverage. Nothing personal just business. B thankfully the bucs took u off the scrap heap of undrafted Bums and helped u make a career. If the bucs did not contact you why don’t you contact them? Take the initiative Penn and offer something. By not contacting the Bucs it looks like Penn wanted his 7.5 mil and hoped for the best. It goes both ways here, no one contacted each other and was left with the idea that Penn would have earned 7.5 mil and he was not worth that value.

The only thing Penn had going for him was durability. Unfortunately he was a below average player making too much money. Geez, I’m glad he’s gone, he’s all talk with no performance to back it up. Penn deserves nothing. Like so many others before him, he is avoiding. He’s getting up there in years. There is a reason only the Raiders wanted him. He’s entering his twilight years. We needed to get younger.
Player always have a hard time accepting it when the time comes. And Penn would have wanted to start. So offering to restructure would have been refused.
Nothing wrong with wanting your own players.
Besides, we’ve been told Penn was great for years. Now we get to find out if the Bucs were blowing smoke up our tushes.

This is utterly shocking. A guy gets cut and he complains about his previous team’s regime? Unheard of. Look Penn you got a big contract from Tampa and you performed average at best. You couldnt keep your weight under control and you had major issues with speedy D Linemen. This is a business. Did it ever occur to Penn that the reason they didnt tell him earlier is they were still finalizing their plans. This is a lame complaint. There’s a reason he only got a 1 year deal from Oakland. Make no mistake, it may say 2 year contract but the 2nd year has no guaranteed money. This is absolutely a 1 year rental. Thats what Penn is worth now. We made the right move cutting him. Thanks for everything Penn the past 8 years but put your big boy pants on and worry about football.

I have a lot of respect for Penn but his play definitely dropped off last year. If this is in fact how it went down, then I expected more from this regime. I get we always say a new regime owes nothing to the players chosen under the last regime… But that shouldn’t include respect.

It is obvious Lovie and Licht want to reshape the team. I just hope all these moves are successful. Lovie has little experience in personnel moves while in Chicago the GM made the final decsions. Part of the reason Lovie wanted final say in personnnel decisions was his problems with GM in Chicago. Licht is in his first gig as GM. It looks like a couple of kdis in the candy store.
Penn should know this is a business, but the Bucs should have been more professional in releasing Penn, Joesph. You don’t have to have a press conference, but the coach and GM can talk about the contributions Penn and Joesph made and thanks them for the years witht he Bucs. A paragrah on Buccanneer.com does not cut it.

I don’t know Penn like some of you may, but I wonder if they were to have kept him as a back-up, how would he have handled that? Perhaps L&L weren’t too sure (though they never tried to find out, apparently) and just cut ties to avoid any possibility of Penn being disruptive in the locker room.

I don’t understand how you could feel bad. The guy was paid millions upon millions of dollars to do a job and do it well… they didn’t do it as well as the money they were getting paid…so they’re gone.

I am sorry to disagree with so many but Penn doesn’t deserve starter salary and certainly if the deal with Collins didn’t go through, do you think it would have been wise to cause havoc in the locker room having a player who you don’t want? Where’s the logic in that? Also, the O-Line performed miserably over the past couple years, but younger, healthier and less expensive options are longer-term options. This was a great decision, parting ways with older players who aren’t playing well before their contracts expired. It’s a win-win, get smart people — put on a business cap, clearly the organization isn’t making money from fans selling out the stadium on game days, so you’ve got to save money in some places.

When he tweeted “Motivated” workout #1, he lost all of his trade value. They should gave him his walking papers that day.
Most NFL players are up to workout #75 by that time in March.

Donal Penn looked like a statue on about half the passing plays. That says it all. He was “gassed” less than half way through the season. WAY out of shape. A blind man could see it.

I liked Donald Penn…I liked the way he played football. He was a guy who went to battle for his teammates. He was a lowly unsigned free agent who took over for a Free Agent Signee and never looked back in 8 years.
But Donald Penn you need to know something..your no Derrick Brooks. And if the Bucs could do 55 like that…well…listen to what Joseph said on the way out. Nothing surprises him.

If Mr. Penn and the other linemen had done there job we wouldn’t be having this conversation. It is amazing to me after their performances the last couple of years that this wouldn’t have been extremely obvious. We appreciate your time Mr. Penn but time to move on.

Boo hoo, mr. PENN, just move on………nobody cares…….although i have to say this…..he was not puncked by Jarred Allen on that game as someone stated above…..he did put Allewn in his place on that play and didnt let Jarred bully him, he always defended our guys, but that was it, got blown too many times last season. Again, …….boo.hoo!!!! 🙁

Donald Penn has been a slackers for the last three years at least. I have been watching him closely since pre season 2010. He obviously lasted down on every other play. Since that time I have seen him do the same during games. Probably why he had weight troubles. Not enough work. I don’t know if he picked that up from Ellen Winslow or visceral but they both were doing that at least since 2010.
I say good, get rid of the dead wood. We need someone coaching who won’t take crap from high paid players.

well you may have started all your games, how’s my times were you fined for being over weight, how bad was your play last year? sorry my friend you are far from an elite tackle like you believe you are in your head. At hats why your market was slim to none and you landed with the raiders! good luck with that. Stop acting like the Bucs owed you anything you were far from a deserving player by any means … see ya and Collins is better on his feet, quicker and will be an upgrade no question
