“Gigantic”

Adam Schein lauds the Bucs signing of DE Michael Johnson.

Goodness knows that anyone fumbling around with a white cane could see the Bucs needed a pass rush from the edge. Hell, the Bucs have needed this for seven years, since Simeon Rice left the Bucs.

Time after time after time the Bucs tried to find a reliable, two-digit sack guy. Time and again, the Bucs swung and missed. And when it appeared the Bucs developed their own double-digit sack guy (Michael Bennett), they let him walk away for no good reason.

Joe still beats his head against his garage wall over that stunt.

Now, just maybe, the Bucs have found another when the they landed Bengals defensive end Michael Johnson, who after recording his first double-digit sack season as the Bengals went to the playoffs (again) in 2012, Johnson fell back to low single-digits last season.

Not to fear, says popular sports radio personality Adam Schein. The host of his own show, “Schein on Sports,” heard exclusively on Mad Dog Sports Radio, part of the wonderful SiriusXM Radio family, Schein was giddier than Bucs fans today when he lauded the moves of Bucs general manager Jason Licht.

In particular, Schein believed the signing of Johnson sealed the day. And, no Bucs fans, don’t fear Johnson’s dip in sacks last season. Given his talents and ability to stop the rush, Johnson will do big things now, believes Schein.

“Three sacks last year? That was a blip. Year before, he was outstanding. I love what the Buccaneers are doing. I think the two biggest winners of free agency, I think you have to say the Broncos, a gigantic winner. I think the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? A gigantic winner.”

When Bucs coach Lovie Smith and Licht hinted they were going to remake the roster, they sure weren’t kidding. It’s almost as if the Bucs have a new defense today.

Will be interesting to see if the Bucs also have a new offensive lineman and/or quarterback come 3 p.m.

If you watch some of his plays from last year this guy was taking double teams like it was nothing. He almost always got through, opposing QB are gonna watch for him that’s for sure this guy just looks very strong and fast on film.

  2. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Lovie and Licht are doing just awesome, so far.
It is clear to me players want to come to Tampa, and play for Lovie.
    Not so with Schiano.
Who wants to put toes on the line, when you are a millionaire ?

  3. stevek (MGM) Says:

I am really excited about this pick up.

MJ is 27, 6’7” and can run like a deer.

We now have an edge pressence.

Next, we need Anthony Collins, the GB Center and possibly another DE?

  4. bwf921 Says:

Not worried about his dip in production. Atkins was hurt and he was double teamed all the time. Next to McCoy he should do well. If not we will continue to cry over Bennett for years to come.

  5. bucfanjeff Says:

    Schein is an idiot.

How can anyone not like this signing? We’re tight against the cap, more cuts coming…BESIDES Revis.

  6. feelthepewterpower Says:

Perhaps the Broncos moves puts pressure on the Patriots to keep in step and trade for Revis before the deadline….

Also, I would NOT overpay for McCown when he’s not a long-term fix. Hell, I’d rather bring back Freeman to at least compete for back-up, and if they don’t draft anyone high and he shows responsibility, the starting job. Freeman is allegedly working out with Brad Johnson which can only improve his overall attitude and production on the field.

JOE, I know that you need the ads here to earn some cash but as of late it is practically impossible to navigate and read your blog while on an iPad or iPhone.

Let Joe stop you there. Joe does not make money on the intermittent app store redirects. They are a safe but annoying bug that affects only a small percentage of mobile users and not all the time. Joe is aware of the problem but can not fix it. Joe runs into it on his phone, too, at times, and it’s really not a hassle to close out. Joe hopes to have it rectified soon. –Joe

    Umm….he does like the signing….

  9. Bobby M Says:

“Time and time again the Bucs missed”…specifically Dominik
2009 Draft: Roy Miller, Klye Moore
    2010 Draft: Gerald McCoy,Brian Price
2011 Draft: Adrian Clayborn, DaQuan Bowers
    2012 Draft: None
2013 Draft: William Gholston, Steven Means, Akeem Spence

    Most Sacks from 2009-2013:
    18 sacks in 58 games-G. McCoy
15 sacks in 50 games-M. Bennett (team leader final year, left as a FA)
    13.5 sacks in 35 games-A. Clayborne
11 sacks in 31 games-Stylez G. White (team leader in 3 of 4 seasons, left as a FA)
    5.5 sacks in 39 games-D. Bowers

The difference in a good GM and Dominik is a good GM keeps productive players around to make the young guys earn their spot on the field. Dominik, not once but twice let the sack leaders walk and his best approach to fixing his errors he built the secondary up to attempt to mask the weak D-Line. For those who say that was all Schiano….Dominik used the exact same approach to mask Freeman’s inability to read a defense by bolstering the line, followed by masking his inaccuracy with tall athletic receivers like Winslow, Jackson, and Williams, then lastly deciding that if you reduce his attempts with a stud RB that surely Freeman would look like a decent pick.

Tell me, have you heard Freeman’s name once in free agency? Schiano at least got a sniff from Penn St. And the Browns, who has mentioned Dominik other than bashing the Revis trade?

  10. bigpoppabuc Says:

I’m indifferent on the first twenty four hours of free agency. I like McDonald but we gave him too much money. Same with Johnson. Verner is excellent and at a decent price. Nit sure what their plans are with Meredith, but they resigned him for too much money too.

I’m almost content staying pat now, making a couple more cuts and keeping Revis. They need to extend McCoy to create some breathing room as well.

  11. William Says:

I love the progress shown by the New Regime. We do have an improved defense. Let’s see what unfolds today.

    Come draft day….
    …Here Comes Johnny!!!!

  12. buchead407 Says:

We need to do better than mccown and glennon.

  13. bucrightoff Says:

Johnny Dream on life support. McCown is close to signing. When he signs, there is a 0% chance the Bucs draft a QB first round. So you Johnny fans better start geting rumours out there so he plunges into the 2nd round.

  14. buchead407 Says:

Mccown had three good games whoopdy effin doo….so disappointed if we don’t draft a qb

  15. bucrightoff Says:

Bucs might still draft a QB, just no shot its in the first round. You don’t draft first round QBs to sit on the bench. Likewise, you don’t sign 34 year olds to $5 million a year (his expected price) contracts to be a backup. McCown is here to start, like it or not.

  16. Bucs55 Says:

One is 6’7 in Johnson.and Golston is 6’6 big boys coming from those edges

  17. Buc1987 Says:

and fans are still thinking they might keep Revis…..It has not sunk in YET!

  18. Buc1987 Says:

buchead407…I think your going to be disappointed. This is Lovieball, QB is not a priority.

  19. bUcNcrAzy Says:

Joe what about the constant virus warning for android users?

  20. Couch Fan Says:

I’m not convinced were going to cut Revis. Not until I see it. It’s just to silly to think they can’t use him. I wont be surprised if they do cut him but I want to see it first.

  21. Bucfreak Says:

Hey Joe, Im not complaining but the redirects for apps happen on android as well. Just thought you should know.

  22. Couch Fan Says:

    McCown is a Buc!!

  23. pick6 Says:

remember that time chidi ahanotu got 10 sacks and then never did it again? i’m sure the film tells us a little more about the guy than the stat sheet, but the reasonable expectation would seem to be that he is not a double digit sacker, since he wasn’t even close 4 out of his 5 pro seasons. i hope he puts up a dozen sacks this year, but i’ll have to see it before i assume it.

  24. Architek Says:

Listen guys, here is what we have going. We all should be as giddy as Schein because we wanted legitimacy and relevancy and this is the first step towards that.

Put the Revis item aside. Look at the big picture and see the methodical approach and so far everything that has happened shows there is a plan. I remember when Raheem first started as HC and then Schiano, all the moves were head scratching and did not match was was stated in the media as part of a plan. With Licht and Lovie, it has been totally opposite. They seem to have a clear plan and idea on how to get there.

They’re literally turning the roster over but more so getting better value and better depth. Every player added is not really a flashy high-priced player but more or less a productive and potential to be more signing. The word that comes to mind is substantial.

When Schiano and Dominik and Raheem were just going after the big names and blowing money – the players never made sense to me.

Even with all of this, the Bucs are setting up the draft to be all offense and play-makers. We would get great value for a LT, QB, or WR in the 1st or 2nd. This is even before the release of Revis. All I am saying is I say the evidence of a experienced and well prepared staff coming together. Let’s not forget the assistants and coaches that are on this staff. There is something to be said for all of the SMEs that are on Lovie’s staff.

    In Lovie I Trust.

  25. BucFan20 Says:

You have to pay more now for players to go out on the field and play in the new ugly uniforms..

  26. k1ngfish1 Says:

This move will help the entire line watch for a healthy Clayborne to have a more productive year because teams are game planning GMC and MJ

Joe what about the constant virus warning for android users?

With you on this every time I click [Read More]… it pops up…

  28. Buc40 Says:

Joe, it’s not the pop-up’s that are the problem it’s the “read more” that is the problem. Each time you try to read a article you have to hit read more wait for the page to set up then you have to back page to start new article then hit read more again. It’s very time consuming and I have 60 megabit speed. Translation, I don’t visit this site as much as I use to.

Yes, some mobile users have some issues, depending on their phones and speeds. Joe is expecting to have a treat for mobile users later this year. In the meantime, you can follow Joe on twitter for direct links to full stories. –Joe
