Bucs Trying To Rework Revis Pact

Now this makes sense to Joe. Yes, Twitter has totally blown up this evening with the news that the Bucs were looking to trade all-world cornerback Darrelle Revis and, minutes later, seemed on the verge of cutting Revis.
One of two Bucs to play in January’s Pro Bowl, Revis has a monster contract that the Bucs, if reports are true, don’t like. But the contract also means few if any teams can afford Revis.
So it seems cooler heads are also involved here, as Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune Twittered out the Bucs have another option aside from trading or cutting Revis.

This seems logical and rational. Revis can still be the NFL’s highest paid cornerback, but the Bucs would get salary cap relief. Since Bucs coach Lovie Smith is so well respected around the NFL, hopefully he can charm Revis into staying, but at a lower price that still feeds his ego (and checking account) since Revis could still be the highest-paid corner in the land.
Joe just doesn’t even want to think about the moon crater in the secondary with Revis gone. Does the 2012 sequel “Friday the 13th: Nightmare in the Bucs Secondary” seem like a fun movie to revisit?

Reworking his contract I can understand. Flat out releasing him? Right now? We don’t have any depth at corner, in fact we really only have 1 starting corner… Revis.
If they can make his contract more cap friendly I’m all for it, but unless they have 2 starting caliber CB’s already lined up, I do not want to see him gone.

Yes Revis has proven in the past that he is more than willing to restructure hi contracts especially when it benefits the team (insert sarcasm). Seems like this should have been done sooner than right about when free agency is about to officially begin? Hope the Bucs know what they’re doing and can pull off whatever their end game is

you guys don’t get it, we have too many needs to pay a corner 16 mil a year. this was a 4-12 team with revis on it.This is not a playoff team. but with the right moves it very well can be in a year or two. 16 mill will get you 2 or 3 good quality free agents. LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is f-ed up. Slightly above average CBs are getting $10M/yr. I get how his salary and a 3rd rd pick can help us. But cant a good coach take advantage of the All-World play of Revis?? If they cut him, I am very disappointed by this.

Is it possible the Bucs have Locked up another free agent CB prior to Tuesday FA signings begin? Could make Revis expendable but bad move if we get no pix or bodies for him considering we are still paying price for trade by giving up a 4th or possibly 3rd rd pick in this years draft.

We keep talking about “paying a CB that much money”. Well, who else are we going to pay???
We have no QB that demands that much money.
Why not keep Revis until that time comes up (probably no time in the near future).
You have to be an elite player and no one in this free agency is close to elite; Revis is!
I would rather keep Revis rather than lose him and overpay a bunch of “C” to “B” grade players.
Most corners are getting 10mil a year… you don’t think Revis is 6mil a year better than ALL those CBs coming out.
We have other needs, true. but releasing Revis only makes more problems.
Draft picks are not sure fire; even 1st round picks (i.e. Josh Freeman) I would rather have a proven ELITE player then draft picks

What this proves to me is that the entire league knows Revis isn’t Revis anymore.

He holds out for more money, and has a couple times, I have a hard time seeing him willingly take less. He knows he can be on a much better team too by leaving. I really doubt he takes a pay cut but who knows.

Is it possible Joe, that they have at least one team that will trade for Revis, with the deal as is….but it isn’t a team that Revis would choose to play for. So they are telling him…rework the deal or we will have to trade you and it isn’t one of the teams you have said you would like to play for. But teams XYZ…good teams, teams where you would want to play for…for a ring..will do the deal if we can restructure the contract so they can handle it. Which way do you want to go?

His contract is comical and in no way did Revis live up to it last season . 12 million a season is a lot more realistic, but sounds like he wants no part of a restructured deal to stay with the Bucs. There is no way he comes close to his current contract on the open market. Cutting him for nothing just sucks. Looking like a best case scenario now will be to restructure his contract and trade him for whatever we can get. Sad times indeed. Great work Dom.

I just can’t believe money is even an issue here. The Bucs are over $20 million under the cap with Revis factored in. We are not getting a better corner anywhere.

This doesn’t tell me that at all, it just tells me that he isn’t going to be traded for when other teams know he’s just going to be released. He instantly becomes the #1 Free Agent available, and there will be an absolute frenzy for his services. Doubtful he makes $16M, but I wouldn’t be completely shocked if he gets a ton of guaranteed money and well over $10M per year. But no way in hell a team is going to give up a premium pick plus $16M to get a guy who is going to be cut anyway.

Cut Penn and we have $30 mill of cap space. Even if you cut Revis and sign Verner, we would only save about 4-5 million.

No team is trading for Revis. His contract is franchise QB money. If he’s released he will never see a 16 million per year contract. But he can go anywhere he wants. I don’t see Revis restructuring his deal. The Bucs were 4-12 with Revis. They could be 7-9 without Revis.

I can think of an entire offensive and defensive line (minus McCoy) that I would rather get rid of versus getting rid of Revis. All this is going to do is allow us to afford a bunch of second tier (“Value???”) free agents. I mean seriously, how big of players are we going to be in free agency? We already have $20M, and I highly doubt Revis is the last big contract to go. So who exactly are we saving up for??? All I know is that we damn sure better spend every single penny available, because on the surface this sucks monkey balls.

Thanks Eric…seems there is the possibility of trading him to a garbage team with the cap space for even some low round draft pick, leaving him stranded in Oakland for instance is one possibility…but if he will restructure, the Pats, Packers, or someone else that is close, will give a higher round pick and he can play for a contender. Seems that is a bargaining chip we have.

But Hawaiian the news about the Bucs cutting him only came out today (if true), so why hasn’t a team traded for him before now?
And surely if a team wanted to trade for him they would have tried to renegotiate his contract.
Looks like the Bucs have looked at this, I imagine they have already tried to re-structure his deal and failed on all fronts.
And, they have players they have in hand they want to sign, who are collectively better than one player.
No way this restructure idea just popped up now.

I doubt they waited till last minute. Revis was probably resistant the reworking his contract. By leaking a “rumor” that he could be cut, they force him to realize he won’t make nearly as much on the market.

Do you remember last year when Dungy and Sapp were saying you don’t start loading your defense from the back but from the front 7. With Revis’ salary gone, we can get 2 starting dbs and 2 starting Dlineman. At first I was shocked but now it’s starting to make sense for the long run. It was a desperate and terrible trade last year and the Bucs were fleeced. That’s partly why we have a new GM. He’ll, the bucs were a 4-12 team with Revis. We need more than one athlete. Let’s see what pans out in the next couple of days before we rush to judgment. In Lovie I trust!

I don’t mind revis’ contract… It’s like a deposit. We get the services of the game’s best until we feel strapped for cash, or if we’re finally ready to pay a franchise QB; THEN you release revis and free up 16 mil instantly with no dead money.
rework now will probably require future guaranteed bonuses, then what happens if revis underperforms or gets hurt? This a mess.

The condition being that Revis restructure his contract to be more Cap friendly,
I.E.- not less money, just more money in Bonuses/ incentives.
Bucs are ” allegedly” trying to restructure Revis’ contract right now, in order to complete trade by 12:00 tomorrow.
That would, at least ,make sense.
Cutting Revis means I was entirely wrong. The new coach and GM are idiots.
I’ll reinvest myself again, if and when this franchise stops doing stupid, counter productive actions.

I’d trade Vincent too… this team was built the wrong way or at least was built thinking key players would’ve stayed healthy. They didn’t.
We need to blow it up. We can have long term success, just not with anyone over 30. Leadership can come from Lovie and our young stars. We have good quality people in the building now.

So let me get this straight: He signed a contract for 6 years and $96M, and performed at a Pro Bowl level, while playing at probably around 75%. How exactly is he NOT loyal if he wants to keep the contract? Football is the only sport where this is allowed to happen. Hell, Alex Rodriguez is making way more money, while cheating, sucking, and lying. It’s not like Revis is asking for more money, he just wants what he signed for. I’d like to see you get a raise at work, then have your boss tell you that he’d like you to take considerably less money or hit the road. Here’s the thing, it can be argued getting Revis last year was a mistake, at least for the amount he makes and the draft picks we gave up for him. However, that deal was done, there’s no turning back. By getting rid of him, there is absolutely no doubt it was a HORRIBLE deal – probably the worst in the history of our franchise (which says a lot). Like PRBucFan says, we have the money to get other pieces. We are in one of the better situations in the league regarding the cap. How many free agents do we want? What team has ever won going out getting half a roster worth of free agents in one year? None that I can think of. And I struggle even more finding a successful team that got rid of one of their best players. There is not one free agent available better than Darrelle Revis. No one is even that close. Yes his salary is high, probably 5 Million or so too high, but so what? We aren’t paying a QB big money like the good teams, so what’s the difference? If we got a great QB, by all means let’s get rid of Revis. But that’s not happening, so all we are going to get is a bunch of marginal players that aren’t even close to his ability. But I’m so happy we have that extra cap room. That’s just wonder-freaking-ful.

also, his cap hit will be less and less (%-wise) as the cap grows, as it will the next 2 years, at least. it is estimated to go to 160 million in 2 years. if that is the case, he will be a better deal compared to what cb’s will make in those coming years.
