Bucs Trying To Rework Revis Pact

March 10th, 2014

F

Now this makes sense to Joe. Yes, Twitter has totally blown up this evening with the news that the Bucs were looking to trade all-world cornerback Darrelle Revis and, minutes later, seemed on the verge of cutting Revis.

One of two Bucs to play in January’s Pro Bowl, Revis has a monster contract that the Bucs, if reports are true, don’t like. But the contract also means few if any teams can afford Revis.

So it seems cooler heads are also involved here, as Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune Twittered out the Bucs have another option aside from trading or cutting Revis.

@RCummingsTBO: The Bucs are actively trying to trade CB Darrelle Revis, while also trying to rework his contract, league sources tells the Tampa Tribune

This seems logical and rational. Revis can still be the NFL’s highest paid cornerback, but the Bucs would get salary cap relief. Since Bucs coach Lovie Smith is so well respected around the NFL, hopefully he can charm Revis into staying, but at a lower price that still feeds his ego (and checking account) since Revis could still be the highest-paid corner in the land.

Joe just doesn’t even want to think about the moon crater in the secondary with Revis gone. Does the 2012 sequel “Friday the 13th: Nightmare in the Bucs Secondary” seem like a fun movie to revisit?

    Please not those nightmares again

  2. Eric Says:

It’s only an option if Revis agrees.

I’m trying to think why he would.

  3. unbelievable Says:

Reworking his contract I can understand. Flat out releasing him? Right now? We don’t have any depth at corner, in fact we really only have 1 starting corner… Revis.

If they can make his contract more cap friendly I’m all for it, but unless they have 2 starting caliber CB’s already lined up, I do not want to see him gone.

  4. NY Buc Says:

Yes Revis has proven in the past that he is more than willing to restructure hi contracts especially when it benefits the team (insert sarcasm). Seems like this should have been done sooner than right about when free agency is about to officially begin? Hope the Bucs know what they’re doing and can pull off whatever their end game is

  5. sam Says:

you guys don’t get it, we have too many needs to pay a corner 16 mil a year. this was a 4-12 team with revis on it.This is not a playoff team. but with the right moves it very well can be in a year or two. 16 mill will get you 2 or 3 good quality free agents. LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE

  6. Jeagan1999 Says:

This is getting crazy! I hope we at least get something for Revis, rather than just let him go!

  7. Harry Says:

This is f-ed up. Slightly above average CBs are getting $10M/yr. I get how his salary and a 3rd rd pick can help us. But cant a good coach take advantage of the All-World play of Revis?? If they cut him, I am very disappointed by this.

  8. Cmurda Says:

This would be more sensible. If we cut him, Im gonna be sick. So I can sleep, plese get Revis straightened out

  9. Mikep4bucs Says:

Is it possible the Bucs have Locked up another free agent CB prior to Tuesday FA signings begin? Could make Revis expendable but bad move if we get no pix or bodies for him considering we are still paying price for trade by giving up a 4th or possibly 3rd rd pick in this years draft.

  10. bigpoppabuc Says:

Traded, released, reworked… Geez. I’m getting a bad feeling. Get the facts straight for us, Joe.

  11. BucsQcCity Says:

I love L&L! They are the real deal! It’s nothing against revis but 16M$/year is insane money! With 16 M$ you get MJ + a top tier CB. Revis knows he’ll not get close to the money he cn have with the bucs if he restructure

  12. Glennon Mob Says:

Rework his contract and trade him.

  13. Kansasbuc Says:

We keep talking about “paying a CB that much money”. Well, who else are we going to pay???

We have no QB that demands that much money.

Why not keep Revis until that time comes up (probably no time in the near future).

You have to be an elite player and no one in this free agency is close to elite; Revis is!

I would rather keep Revis rather than lose him and overpay a bunch of “C” to “B” grade players.

Most corners are getting 10mil a year… you don’t think Revis is 6mil a year better than ALL those CBs coming out.

We have other needs, true. but releasing Revis only makes more problems.

Draft picks are not sure fire; even 1st round picks (i.e. Josh Freeman) I would rather have a proven ELITE player then draft picks

  14. FLBoyInDallas Says:

If they offer him more than he’s sure he can get elsewhere, he stays in Tampa. If not…he’s gone. Pretty simple.

  15. Mord Says:

I’m going to sleep. I hope to wake to find Revis has signed a restructured contract aimed at keeping him a Buc … and that the uniforms were just a bad dream.

  16. N.C. FlorIdiot Says:

Yeah, I’m with NY Buc… If this is a simple restructure, then why wait to the last minute to get it done… Something is rotten in the state of Denmark!!

  17. Eric Says:

What this proves to me is that the entire league knows Revis isn’t Revis anymore.

And with a bum knee it’s highly unlikely he ever will be.

Which is why the trade was insanity to begin with.

  18. Snook Says:

    Doesn’t make sense.

If we can re-work his contract, why would we then trade him?

If we add $16M to our already huge cap space, it wont matter. We can’t possibly spend all that money on FAs. Wisely at least.

    More Twitter BS.

  19. tgregs Says:

the guy looked like a lazy fool at the NO game My dog could have covered better. And you guys love a loafer? Even Joe said he dogged it that game. look at the tape. Brees to the end zone…Revis didn’t move a step.

  20. Kevin Says:

I hope this is true. I hope Lovie keeps Revis and I hope Lovie plays some Man coverage against Cam, Brees and Matty Ice. This sucks gonna go try and go to bed. SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. bucrightoff Says:

He holds out for more money, and has a couple times, I have a hard time seeing him willingly take less. He knows he can be on a much better team too by leaving. I really doubt he takes a pay cut but who knows.

  22. Snook Says:

    Bucs release Revis.
    Bucs draft Johnny Football.

How many Bucs fans blow their brains out?

  23. mark2001 Says:

Is it possible Joe, that they have at least one team that will trade for Revis, with the deal as is….but it isn’t a team that Revis would choose to play for. So they are telling him…rework the deal or we will have to trade you and it isn’t one of the teams you have said you would like to play for. But teams XYZ…good teams, teams where you would want to play for…for a ring..will do the deal if we can restructure the contract so they can handle it. Which way do you want to go?

  24. Theodore Says:

Why rework now? Get cut and see who gives the best offer. If it’s the Bucs, so be it. Not sure why Revis would agree to this.

  25. N.C. FlorIdiot Says:

Maybe they’re throwing the trade bait to other teams to gage what Revis’ worth is…. To have leverage against Revis in the restructure attempt??? “The highest you’re going to get out there is $11 million, we’ll pay you $12 million.”

  26. tgregs Says:

All world? Did you watch the NO tape? All world ass- clown

  27. JerseyBucsFan Says:

I will be very disappointed if they release him. Either rework him or suck it up. He is the best corner this team will ever have. Beside #22 of course

  28. Maze Says:

His contract is comical and in no way did Revis live up to it last season . 12 million a season is a lot more realistic, but sounds like he wants no part of a restructured deal to stay with the Bucs. There is no way he comes close to his current contract on the open market. Cutting him for nothing just sucks. Looking like a best case scenario now will be to restructure his contract and trade him for whatever we can get. Sad times indeed. Great work Dom.

  29. bucrightoff Says:

I just can’t believe money is even an issue here. The Bucs are over $20 million under the cap with Revis factored in. We are not getting a better corner anywhere.

  30. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“What this proves to me is that the entire league knows Revis isn’t Revis anymore.”

    ———

This doesn’t tell me that at all, it just tells me that he isn’t going to be traded for when other teams know he’s just going to be released. He instantly becomes the #1 Free Agent available, and there will be an absolute frenzy for his services. Doubtful he makes $16M, but I wouldn’t be completely shocked if he gets a ton of guaranteed money and well over $10M per year. But no way in hell a team is going to give up a premium pick plus $16M to get a guy who is going to be cut anyway.

  31. Jerry Says:

Cut Penn and we have $30 mill of cap space. Even if you cut Revis and sign Verner, we would only save about 4-5 million.

    This is really dumb.

  32. Eric Says:

I like that mark2001 line of thinking.

  33. MTM Says:

No team is trading for Revis. His contract is franchise QB money. If he’s released he will never see a 16 million per year contract. But he can go anywhere he wants. I don’t see Revis restructuring his deal. The Bucs were 4-12 with Revis. They could be 7-9 without Revis.

“Another possibility just occurred to me. The Bucs could have leaked this info in order to gain leverage to redo Revis’ contract.”

    Props to me.

  35. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I can think of an entire offensive and defensive line (minus McCoy) that I would rather get rid of versus getting rid of Revis. All this is going to do is allow us to afford a bunch of second tier (“Value???”) free agents. I mean seriously, how big of players are we going to be in free agency? We already have $20M, and I highly doubt Revis is the last big contract to go. So who exactly are we saving up for??? All I know is that we damn sure better spend every single penny available, because on the surface this sucks monkey balls.

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Hawaiian Buc, I agree, but just to play devils advocate, five B players would do more for the team than one A player.

    B is still above average.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

    lol@snook

  38. mark2001 Says:

Thanks Eric…seems there is the possibility of trading him to a garbage team with the cap space for even some low round draft pick, leaving him stranded in Oakland for instance is one possibility…but if he will restructure, the Pats, Packers, or someone else that is close, will give a higher round pick and he can play for a contender. Seems that is a bargaining chip we have.

  39. Eric Says:

But Hawaiian the news about the Bucs cutting him only came out today (if true), so why hasn’t a team traded for him before now?

And surely if a team wanted to trade for him they would have tried to renegotiate his contract.

Looks like the Bucs have looked at this, I imagine they have already tried to re-structure his deal and failed on all fronts.

And, they have players they have in hand they want to sign, who are collectively better than one player.

No way this restructure idea just popped up now.

  40. bee Says:

Please God in heaven let them restructure the contract, the depth behind him is miserable. Geez… and whoever we won’t come close to his skill set. Guess we’ll find out tomorrow. Lets see how reasonable Revis is.

  41. JerseyBucsFan Says:

I remember lovie saying something like the game would be lost on how much man to man is played. Keeping the best corner in the league can do that for you

  42. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Buccaneer Bonzai

Oooo…lol you called it? Good One

    N.C. FlorIdiot Says
“Yeah, I’m with NY Buc… If this is a simple restructure, then why wait to the last minute to get it done… Something is rotten in the state of Denmark!!”

I doubt they waited till last minute. Revis was probably resistant the reworking his contract. By leaking a “rumor” that he could be cut, they force him to realize he won’t make nearly as much on the market.

  44. Buc1987 Says:

The Bucs went 4-12 WITH Revis.

  45. sethb22 Says:

    Revis has got to go.

    Needs on Defense: 2 DE’s, 1 DT, 1 SLB, 1 CB
Needs on Offense: 1 Slot WR, 1 TE, 1-2 Tackles, 1-2 Gaurds, 1 QB, 1 FB.

Go ahead and try to fix this mess with 19 million… Its Impossible!

But with 35 Million, you could address a lot more needs.

Revis is a luxury, not an essential…You need the Ice Cream before the Sprinkles..

Do you remember last year when Dungy and Sapp were saying you don’t start loading your defense from the back but from the front 7. With Revis’ salary gone, we can get 2 starting dbs and 2 starting Dlineman. At first I was shocked but now it’s starting to make sense for the long run. It was a desperate and terrible trade last year and the Bucs were fleeced. That’s partly why we have a new GM. He’ll, the bucs were a 4-12 team with Revis. We need more than one athlete. Let’s see what pans out in the next couple of days before we rush to judgment. In Lovie I trust!

  48. Snook Says:

Good point man, but in Revis’ case it’s hot fudge, whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry without the ice cream.

  50. BucsQcCity Says:

Rework your contract Revis, pick the contender of your choixe: broncos, 9er, Pats and let it go. You won’t get near 16M$/y here

  51. bigpoppabuc Says:

I could turn sour on this new regime. Movie talks of Revis being part of the defensive foundation, and claims he wants to spend tothe cap limits….now he’s going to release the best corner in the league for some cap space?

I don’t mind revis’ contract… It’s like a deposit. We get the services of the game’s best until we feel strapped for cash, or if we’re finally ready to pay a franchise QB; THEN you release revis and free up 16 mil instantly with no dead money.

rework now will probably require future guaranteed bonuses, then what happens if revis underperforms or gets hurt? This a mess.

    How about trading Revis?

-For the price of ONE GUY (16 million in cap space) We can sign 3 good corners
(two outside guys + one slot guy).

R Corner /L Corner (FA Options)
    • Alterraun Verner
    • Nolan Carroll (luv this kid)
    • Vontae Davis
    • Antoine Cason
    • Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

    Slot Corner (FA Options)
    • Captain Munnerlyn
    • Walter Thurmond
    • Josh Wilson

But thats been my point all along. A defense does lead from the backend. It lead from the front seven. That’s why we didn’t need to give up all of that for a CB. Instead we should’ve invested more heavliy in our front seven. As we should do now

Like I’ve said before in a previous post. Once you find a Trade partner (Similar to the way Philly trade Asante Samuels to Atlanta). You restructure the contract, to complete the trade!!!!

  58. Joe Says:

-For the price of ONE GUY (16 million in cap space) We can sign 3 good corners

Two MAJOR obstacles you are overlooking:

    1) How do you know you can get these guys?

    2) How do you know they will play well?

With Revis, you have a known commodity.

Use the Cap Space to Improve Depth + add a few starters.

    DE

Draft a few more good prospects at the same position. And we wil be a better overall team, with some quality debt on defense.

    @jarrett
I could give a dam about Garment sales. WE NEED CHAMPIONSHIPS. And this is a team sport. And our Team has plenty of holes all over the damn roster.
We need to add quality depth (Not Quality Debt). And a few more than capable starters. No need to gamble away, 10yrs of hard work now. We’re finally, in a position to to take that next leap as organization.
And I hated the Eric Wright Contract just for the record.

“Joe just doesn’t even want to think about the moon crater in the secondary with Revis gone. Does the 2012 sequel “Friday the 13th: Nightmare in the Bucs Secondary” seem like a fun movie to revisit?”

    Exactly

  61. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I believe Lovie & Licht Have a plan-Can’t wait to see it through

  62. Capt. Tim Says:

Sweet- we can get all these players for Revis!
Where is this all pro player gumball machine?
    Great players get resigned.
Players you can live without get to try free agency.
And you’ll way overpay for them. That’s the price for drafting stupidly, and being desperate.

And you’ll pay high, and offer contracts you don’t like, because other teams are bidding against you.
Most free agents want long term security. Once you give them that guaranteed money, Mission Accomplished!! It’s coast to the finish time now!

Yeah- that’s why you build thru the draft, and only use Free agency to get a missing piece for competitive teams.
You try to build the majority of the team that way??
It’ll take years to draft good players, to replace the loafers you’ve saddled your franchise with.

Wasted enough of my life, watching this team ran into the ground by idiots.
    Won’t bother this time.

  63. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You also use Free Agency to make up for lost picks, which seems to be the plan.

    Capt. Tim, I don’t believe you’re done.

At least see how things pan out.

Though I have to say, if they bring in Vick tomorrow I won’t be attending games.

  64. PRBucFan Says:

If you don’t think what Lovie and Licht had to do with Revis was number 1 on the list of “this is what must be done” from the Glazers well..

I don’t blame them in the slightest, the onus is on the Glazers.

  65. Buc1987 Says:

    Capt Tim…you are going nowhere.

  66. Capt. Tim Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai
I don’t believe they will cut Revis.
What I’ve heard, that I do believe, is this

Patriots are offering Logan Ryan, plus either their first round pick/ Ryan Mallet
    For Revis

The condition being that Revis restructure his contract to be more Cap friendly,
I.E.- not less money, just more money in Bonuses/ incentives.

Bucs are ” allegedly” trying to restructure Revis’ contract right now, in order to complete trade by 12:00 tomorrow.

That would, at least ,make sense.

Cutting Revis means I was entirely wrong. The new coach and GM are idiots.
I’ll reinvest myself again, if and when this franchise stops doing stupid, counter productive actions.
    Time will tell.

  67. PRBucFan Says:

I would die if the Patsies won the superbowl again because of a Revis deal in which Revis goes out and shows the world he is every bit one of the best CB’s to ever play the game…

  69. sethb22 Says:

I’d trade Vincent too… this team was built the wrong way or at least was built thinking key players would’ve stayed healthy. They didn’t.

We need to blow it up. We can have long term success, just not with anyone over 30. Leadership can come from Lovie and our young stars. We have good quality people in the building now.

“*A defense doesn’t lead from the backend.”

    no, but a luvmybucs does… 😉

so you keep a list of your own quotes? how cute.

  72. LUVMYBUCS Says:

As someone On Social Media just stated in reference to Revis-

The man is loyal to the “F-U, Pay me” Philosophy. He wouldn’t know real loyalty if it hit him in the d#ck

  73. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“The man is loyal to the “F-U, Pay me” Philosophy. He wouldn’t know real loyalty if it hit him in the d#ck”

    ——

So let me get this straight: He signed a contract for 6 years and $96M, and performed at a Pro Bowl level, while playing at probably around 75%. How exactly is he NOT loyal if he wants to keep the contract? Football is the only sport where this is allowed to happen. Hell, Alex Rodriguez is making way more money, while cheating, sucking, and lying. It’s not like Revis is asking for more money, he just wants what he signed for. I’d like to see you get a raise at work, then have your boss tell you that he’d like you to take considerably less money or hit the road. And don’t use the lame, penis envy excuse that he makes more money. It doesn’t matter. If that bothers you, become a professional football player.

  74. Cmurda Says:

Revis has earned his money. He’s a stud. I get the business side and why Licht and Lovie would not be in love with this contract. Revis could agree to a restructured deal but he honestly has no reason to give up too much cash on it. As a Yankee fan, you can say that again Hawaiian. I hate you Arod.

  75. nate Says:

First the uniforms now this.. watch now we will draft derek carr with our 7th pick and im offically going to throw up…

  76. Jerry Says:

You can’t build a team by having everyone under 30, trading away every good player you got, and blowing it up when it doesnt all work out.

We are becoming just like the Browns.

  77. Mumbles Says:

Revis is done in Tampa. Any restructure is done to make trading easier! Revis should understand this. It’s all about the money!

  78. Brandon Says:

It’s called PASS RUSH. Any and all great defenses are built on the backs of their pass rush…not with their DBs leading the way. Whomever thought you could build a defense that are complete idiots (Schiano and Dominik). I hate those two more and more every day.

  79. Burg Says:

I see almost no scenario in which cutting Revis turns out well, unless we have a group of great FA’s ready to sign and we really need the cap room, and we need the 3rd round pick to trade up a few spots to guarantee we get a shot at one the 3 top Qb’s…. (preferably Bortles)

  80. PRBucFan Says:

Until they have no money to build that pass rush which they still clearly do even with Revis’s contract as it is now you have no point.

  81. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Here’s the thing, it can be argued getting Revis last year was a mistake, at least for the amount he makes and the draft picks we gave up for him. However, that deal was done, there’s no turning back. By getting rid of him, there is absolutely no doubt it was a HORRIBLE deal – probably the worst in the history of our franchise (which says a lot). Like PRBucFan says, we have the money to get other pieces. We are in one of the better situations in the league regarding the cap. How many free agents do we want? What team has ever won going out getting half a roster worth of free agents in one year? None that I can think of. And I struggle even more finding a successful team that got rid of one of their best players. There is not one free agent available better than Darrelle Revis. No one is even that close. Yes his salary is high, probably 5 Million or so too high, but so what? We aren’t paying a QB big money like the good teams, so what’s the difference? If we got a great QB, by all means let’s get rid of Revis. But that’s not happening, so all we are going to get is a bunch of marginal players that aren’t even close to his ability. But I’m so happy we have that extra cap room. That’s just wonder-freaking-ful.

  82. Tank4Jameis Says:

Hawaiian Buc, it gets worse. Imagine next year having to wake up and go to a bar at 7 am to watch this team in their new afterbirth unis.
