Lovie Says He’s Bullish On A QB “Upgrade”

“It’s a tough business, my son.”
“But if you ask me do I think we can win games with Mike Glennon? I’m going to say, “yeah, we can win games with Mike Glennon.’ If you ask me would you like to upgrade the position? I’m not running around the question. That’s a yes, too. If you ask me, would you like a veteran? Yeah. Really, that’s the case. It all has to go together. You have to look at what’s available at other positions, too.” — Bucs head coach Lovie Smith, speaking today at the NFL Scouting Combine.

We all know this is the time of year for smokescreens. It only works to the Bucs advantage if other teams believe they may be interested in drafting a QB. That doesn’t mean that I think they aren’t considering a QB, but I do think all statements made from here on have to be viewed critically, knowing that most teams are going to throw chum in the water rather than give away their actual draft day thinking.

I say that based on what I see on the field bonsai.
I see a calm guy who does not get rattled. comes off the field and goes directly to the play sheets and studies them to find the mistakes. a QB with his head up even if he just got knocked the f*&k out. we don’t hear about him posting nonsense on twitter, wanting to be a country and western singer etc, etc.

Need an upgrade. If you have a chance to get a QB at 7, take it.
Or trade up if necessary.

First, that means absolutely nothing. Second, Chris Simms held his head up, and he sucked. In fact, Glennon is very much like Chris Simms so far.
Look, I’m not against Glennon. I hope he does turn out to be a great QB for the Bucs. I’m just not willing to risk it all on a hunch when we are in position to get someone that can compete for that starting role against him, and we use the best of the two.

i’m okay with QB competition, but if you draft a QB at 7 overall, there will be no competition. the rookie will start, the veteran will back him up, and glennon is demoted to developmental QB til the veteran leaves town

also, if we’ve learned anything about the draft it’s that if a coach or GM says something like “I’m not running around the question. That’s a yes, too.” regarding draft strategy, they probably intend to do the opposite.

The draft stock in players change daily, by the time of the draft, the order of valued players will look a lot different than today.
Not many people will know what the management will do….I think that’s the object here.

I would like to remind the MGM that Mike Glennon only had a 51% PCT average in his last 4 games. He did not do well down the stretch. That is why no one is sold on him.

I seriously doubt that anyone will beat out Glennon at this point.
Possibly McCown or Vick and if they do it will be by a very slim
margin.

Depressing? How? Every coach I ever knew let it be know early on they are looking to replace you with a better player.
Smith said exactly what an NFL Head Coach should say regarding a position that is not settled. I doubt there are more that 10 players on the roster the coaches are “all in” for and no Buc QB is on that list. That means they are looking for 43 upgrades.
I didn’t read it as he’s down on Glennon at all, and I doubt Glennon would hear it that way, either.
I also expect the entire coaching staff and GM to be playing Liar’s Poker for the next 11 weeks…as every coaching staff and GM on every team in the league will.
I swear, some football geeks are worse than an insecure, young teenage boy in love, trying to interpret every word his target of love utters: “does she love me, does she love me not…”

I know there are people who are lobying for him if he falls to us at #7 and I realize that Lovie is all about that side of the ball, but I fear he will be a big time bust. You can’t coach heart and that guy plays with half of his heart. It is a shame too because he has the skills to be great. Such a waste.

As far a Glennon goes…I am not in the mob, however I do like him and if he has enough upside and improvement to win the job over another veteran or rookie then as far as I am concerned he is the man. He is the returning starter until someone proves otherwise. I would not move up since we need to much to sell the farm for a rookie QB, but if Manziel or Bridgewater were to fall to #7 then I think you have to take one of them. That won’t happen though. I would go with Mack, Barr, Mathews or Watkins if one of them is available when we pick.

Maybe we are talking semantics with the word “agenda”. I think one or more writers of this website:
1) Doesn’t like Glennon as the starter for this team
2) Wants the team to draft Manziel
As such, the writer(s) continually use these feelings as subtext for articles and the questions that they give in their interviews.
Let’s be straight up, here. You (the writer), don’t care what I think. And, I don’t care if you deny it (but I obviously don’t believe the denial). We’re both not idiots, so, save me the lip service.
Me? Glennon gets a shot against whoever they bring in. He’s earned that. And, Manziel is a bust waiting to happen. And finally, this is just a weak QB draft year, and no matter how much some of you want to dress up these prospects (it’s like their agents are posting), it doesn’t change anything. It’s just bad luck if you are team wanting to draft a QB this year.

IMO Manziel will be a locker room cancer but will be skill wise a little like Favre was….able to make plays by extending plays with his feet however he will throw a ton of INT’s due to over confidence and attempting to force throws. Also WR’s will get disenchanted when they are working theit tails off to get open and Manziel decides to run.

Joe…I never bought into some “Glennon hate conspiracy” regarding your perspective…still don’t. But I do think you are getting pretty testy about the Glennon thing. Please don’t let the Mob turn your vision to red when you hear the name Glennon. No one in their right mind would want to put the next few years in the “Glennon basket”. Didn’t we learn anything from Freeman? I’ve wanted us to bring in a good Vet that can win if Glennon Faulters, or maybe pass him up if possible. I don’t know how good a QB he can develop into…and I don’t want to risk the future of the franchise on it. I remember that some even questioned whether Rodgers could effectively replace Favre….he had shown promise, but had broken a leg or ankle and the question of durability existed. And Glennon is no Rodgers. So bring on the competition. But honestly, other than Jackson and Revis, McCoy and David, who on this team are you really “settled with”. I’ve even seen Martin on a “draft disappointment list” because of his injury. So bring on the competition.

So since that’s probably not going to happen, it is safe to say that whoever the staff brings in, Glennon will be given a fair shot to win the job.

I agree that MG8′s performance was poor in December compared to his performance in November (three games with rating of 123.1 or better, offensive rookie of the month). But did he regress as the year went on?
Most people do not think that Peyton Manning “regressed” in the month of February? Rather the stifling and ferocious #1 defense in the NFL shut him down.
Well, the Bucs’ December schedule included the following defensive units: Panthers (2nd overall, 6th passing), Saints (4th overall, 2nd passing), 49′ers (5th overall, 7th passing), Bills (10th overall, but 4th against the pass), and St. Louis (15th overall, but 3rd in total sacks, and 7 sacks that game).
Furthermore, three of those opponents were playoff teams (SF 12-4, Carolina 12-4, and NO 11-5) vying to win their division, and playing for a first round bye vs. our 4-12 Bucs looking to start their offseason.

BTW, I know that the Seahawks completely overlooked our hapless Bucs, but MG8 did have a QB rating against them of 123.1, with 2 td’s and no INT’s, all on their homecourt. Did I mention that he was a rookie, and only a 3rd round draft pick to boot.
