The buzz on the street says the Buccaneers are a prime candidate to open the NFL preseason schedule in the annual Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio, on Sunday night, Aug. 3.
It’s a game familiar to Lovie Smith, and one the Bucs very well may be lobbying to play.
Yes, NFL teams can serve up schedule requests to the league. It happens every year, from dates to start times to home-heavy early schedules, playing in London, and more. Those requests aren’t always honored, but often they are.
There are a couple of factors in place that lead Joe to believe the Buccaneers want to play in Hall of Fame Game, which would give them an extra preseason game.
First, Lovie Smith has experience with the game. The Bears won it in 2005, the year of Lovie’s first division title in Chicago, with a first-year offensive coordinator and a new quarterback (Kyle Orton). And the Bears also were scheduled for the 2011 game, which was cancelled because of the asinine NFL lockout. Lovie was on the last Buccaneers staff that played in a Hall of Fame game back in 1998.
Given the strong likelihood the Bucs will have legitimate competition for starting quarterback this season, Joe suspects Lovie would be pleased to have a fifth preseason game to let Jeff Tedford evaluate the offense.
Also, the Bucs are rolling out a new helmet and logo on Thursday. New jerseys could be on the way, and an earlier-than-usual preseason game on national prime time television can generate a lot of buzz to sell plenty of new gear.
Throw in Derrick Brooks’ enshrinement into the Hall of Fame that weekend, a man the Bucs have to be more proud to celebrate than Warren Sapp, and Joe would be surprised if the Buccaneers aren’t actively seeking to play in Hall of Fame game.
Joe’s actually getting pumped up at the possibility. The more Bucs football the better. Make it happen, Team Glazer.

I’m glad for every game we won last year….its why we play….I even want us to win preseason games (avoiding injury).

There is no such thing as a meaningless game….not then, hot now…not ever.

Really dude? I’m no stranger to throwing some stretches out there to get to a point but I think that’s a little out there. But, I appreciate both you and lightningbuc coming down from up on high to mingle with us lesser fans. Maybe you can regale us with your accounts of how we’re going to be that much better off for having won those games in the long run.
I’ve got an analogy for you, fans that root for wins despite the season being lost beyond hope of recovery are the same type of people that stay with an abusive, drunk, unfaithful husband. Sometimes circumstances call for one to try and better your situation going forward.

There were a few screaming “Tank for Teddy” or whatever. Although I think most of the fans (myself included) that were making it known we wanted a change (whether that be bench Freeman or Fire Schiano) were not doing so because we wanted to lose, but rather because we wanted to win. Many times I heard “Why fire Schiano now when he could keep losing and get us a better draft position”. I would rather have made the move earlier, moved up an assistant to interim head coach, continued to do our best to win games and be in a position to start looking at future head coaching options earlier. But not many agreed with that, whether it was because they wanted Schiano to stay or because they wanted us to keep losing, it’s hard to say. All I know is whether I agree or disagree with a change and make my voice heard, it’s only because I believe the change gave us a better (or worse) chance to win and that’s all I care about.

Does this include or exclude the QB position? Just curious, because circumstances this year are about as perfect as they could be to improve the QB spot, even if we have to move up. It’s not often you get a class of this many QBs that could potentially be high quality, and also have a top 10 draft choice. I suppose we could just sit pat and hope we tank enough games for Mariotta or Hundley or Winston (if he comes out) next year. Maybe Glennon is the answer, but it’s a huge risk passing up these circumstances.

@BamBam – I can see where you’d feel that way if you thought these QBs coming out this year are that high quality you speak of. This is no class of ’83. It’s not even a class of ’12. It’s a shade better than last year and our 3rd rounder was the best of that lot. I don’t see it. I understand wanting to use this high pick on a potentially great QB but I just don’t see these guys being that. We can’t make them have a higher ceiling than they have just because we have a high pick and a perceived need at the position. Not saying you’re wrong because I don’t really know what Glennon has if used correctly but I also haven’t seen anything out of these incoming QBs that is jaw dropping other than some scrambling. A lot of those lobs thrown out there by JF were completions because Evans went up there and saved his but by plucking it out of the crowd that the ball was thrown in to. Haven’t watched a lot of film on the other two and if they’re great then get them if they fall to us but the fact that there are so many people that are smarter than me who are not sold says to me look elsewhere

I get ya, Patrick. There’s no “Andrew Luck/RGIII” in this draft that are head and shoulders above the others. Even then, RGIII is still an unknown. Pretty common in most drafts that you have your “favorites” and then a 2nd tier, and the rest. This year, the difference between the “favorites and the “2nd tier” is closer than usual, but that doesn’t mean the favorites aren’t as good.
I’m not a huge Manziel fan. I give him his credit for his ability to make things happen, never give up on a play, and find creative ways to move the chains and score points. I think he has a lot of potential to succeed and a lot of potential to fail. Bortles has better size, better strength, enough mobility/escapability, but might need a year behind an existing starter to groom. I do think if he has the right coaches, he may blossom like an Aaron Rodgers though. Bridgewater is the most NFL ready and probably this year’s “Luck”. Only real knock is that he has trouble keeping his weight up to 220 and may not stand up to NFL hits. To me, it’s a lot easier for an NFL trainer to bulk up a kids muscle than a QB coach to fix mechanical flaws that a kid has had since high school. That’s why I like Bridgewater over Glennon by a mile.
All the things we like about Glennon, Bridgewater has too. He’s smart, studies the game, loves the film room, great student. But he has intangibles Glennon doesn’t. Mobility/escapability is one, but he is a true pocket passer. More in the mold of Russell Wilson who scrambles, but still keeps his eyes downfield to throw before finally taking off to run. Better pre-snap reads, better blitz reads, better anticipation on throws, throws receivers open better, throws receivers away from big hits better.
The odds of getting Bridgewater are slim, but I’d sell the farm to get him. I’d even put him ahead of Mariotta and Hundley next year. Bridgewater could be the best prospect since Luck and possibly the best we’ll see for a few years. That’s why it’s a risk you don’t pass up when the circumstances align.

@BamBam – Those are solid points and if what you say is the case, again I haven’t studied the incoming QBs at length, then I’d say take him at 7 if he’s there. If he’s there then that means that a number of the other top tier players at positions of need for us were filled already by other teams so at that point I say go with BPA and if that’s him then so be it. I can begrudgingly handle a QB taken at 7 unless it’s taken while Watkins or Clowney are somehow still on the board. It’s trading up for a QB that I would have a hard time being ok with.

@Andrew – It looks like a European league helmet. While there may be worse things out there, it’s still a significant step back from where we are. I think we’ve got the best uniforms in the league and really am not a fan of messing with them at all. Maybe make the pewter pants a bit more water resistant so we can’t visibly see the swamp a$$ the players have going on but that’s a minor complaint that I would say isn’t even worth bringing up if it weren’t for us already having uniform discussions

@Andrew – I think that since there was really nobody that I knew of that had anything against the uniforms we had going on that the changes would have to be subtle. If nobody is complaining then you’re taking a pretty big risk by going in and making significant changes.

I enjoyed the wins we got, but I also wanted a good draft pick. Was I rooting to lose? No. But getting a higher pick made the losses easier to accept.
Still, I understand the viewpoint of losing to get that higher pick.
There comes a point when you have to decide what is best for the tea in the long haul. Losing more games became a larger benefit at a certain point. All these people suggesting we trade up? We would not even need to consider it if we were at pick 5 or sooner.
So, even as I enjoyed the wins, I knew they were hurting more than helping.

A floundering Falcons team that was a shell of itself, a Miami team that was mired in scandal, Detroit was legit and I’m happy we got that one, and a Bills team that was getting thumped by everyone. Not exactly wins to be terribly proud of. I’m glad we got the Lions win but if we’d dumped the rest of them I’d be happy to be counting down the days to see CLOWNEY on the back of a Bucs jersey after we snag him at #1

The way the draft order is determined when multple teams have the same record is so lame. That is not how they seed teams in the playoffs. No they use conference record and so forth. The whole strength of schedule nonsense is bull spit. Several of those teams ahead of the bucs were probably better than us last season. Hopefully this is the last year for a while that we will have to deal with a top draft pick.

Man you opened the door Patrick. Now you seem like a smart guy, even though you are from KY. I am guessing you are educated, etc, and you understand and believe in the fundamentals of supply and demand and all that, right? Sooooo, I have to take exception to you saying this class of QBs in a “shade” better than 2012. Because from what I am reading, there are going to be 3 to 4 QBs taken in the first rd, right? AND at least 3 likely taken in the top 10 this year, right?
So, how many were taken in the 1st rd last year (drumroll…)? ONE, EJ Manual taken in the middle of the rd. So that would mean that there were NO QBs taken in the top 10, right? hmmmm, to me, that suggests that EVERYBODY thinks “…these QBs coming out this year are that high quality you speak of”.

@Harry – disagree sir. There are teams in desperation mode right now that are willing to take a qb high in the first round simply because they have nothing else. That doesn’t make those qbs better, that just makes the teams looking at drafting them more desperate. When Houston is projected as being willing to pass up on Clowney and the opportunity to pair him up with jj watt to take a qb that isn’t Joe Montana then it means they are in desperation mode

@Harry – if I recall, all of those teams you mentioned on that list either had a former first rounder playing for them and the regime that drafted him was still in place and hoping he’d turn things around so they wouldn’t get canned or they had just signed a FA qb to an expensive contract so they wouldn’t turn around and draft someone in the first round. Even the jets weren’t willing to do that even though their qb was atrocious but when Smith was still available the next round they couldn’t wait anymore.

Sorry, that makes no sense. Using your example, the Jets needed a QB (obviously, since they drafted one), there was a new GM in place, so he is not getting fired. And Sanchez was so bad he was loosing his starting position in training camp as evidence by the preseason game he got hurt in playing in the 4th qtr with the other scrubs.
BUT the QB needy Jets (again, as evidenced by their drafting a QB) did not see quality in the first rd so waited until the 2nd. I don’t know how much more evidence one needs than that.

I think you’re not seeing the whole picture, Patrick. Last year there were plenty of teams “desperate” for an improvement at QB. The Chiefs gave up a couple of draft picks for Alex Smith because they found him to be a better option (former starter that struggled early, but had shown significant improvement over the past couple years) than anyone in the draft. They had to give up two 2nd round picks to get him, but figured it was better than any QB in last year’s draft. Arizona gave up a couple low round draft picks for Carson Palmer who hadn’t really shown much in recent years. Jacksonville, Cleveland, and even the Jets all figured it was better to wait for a better crop of QBs than pick one of the available ones in the first round, although all were in need. The Jets actually passed on a QB twice in the first round. They really needed a QB and eventually got Smith in the 2nd, but none of the QBs that came out last year were true 1st round QBs, it was a horrible QB draft class.
So, with very little talent to draft last year, teams went the route of trading for a QB (because QBs are rarely available as free agents if they’re any good). Free agents available were Tyler Thigpen, Charlie Batch, Matt Leinart, Byron Leftwich.
The Chiefs were desperate, they let Cassell and Quinn go. It was either trade or draft. They had the first pick, could have taken whomever they wanted, the best of the best…. and they passed, decided to trade away multiple picks.
Jacksonville may not have been desperate, they may have just figured it was too soon to spend another top 10 pick on a QB… or they didn’t think any of the QBs in the draft were worth a first round pick. Same for Miami and Tannehill. Either wanted to see more Tannehill or didn’t think there was anyone worth the pick last year.
We haven’t gone through free agency this year yet, but with Vick, Freeman, Flynn, McCown, Grossman and Henne the headliners, I think you’ll see a lot of teams pass. As for trades being the better option, it would have to be for a backup like Ryan Mallett or Kirk Cousins. I think I’d rather chance getting a possible starter in the draft than a known backup in the NFL. And of course, the draft… no one is talking about how there isn’t a “true 1st round QB” this year like they were last year.
Bleacher Report summed it up well last may “The 2013 draft was a case of no stellar prospects entering a quarterback market that is uniquely filled with franchise quarterbacks and high picks hoping to become that caliber of player.”
Those high picks are guys like Gabbert, Tannehill, Ponder, Weeden. Teams still wanted to give them a shot since they were drafted so high. But the key was “no stellar prospects” to replace them with. You don’t think a team with Blaine Gabbert would have JUMPED out of their seat if there was an Andrew Luck in the draft last year, even if they had just taken Gabbert a couple short years ago?
Well, here’s another Bleacher Report quote “The second highest grade I’ve given to a quarterback in the last decade, second only to Andrew Luck, Teddy Bridgewater is a sure-fire franchise player at the next level—or at least he should be.”
Again, sell the farm to get the kid. The Texans will trade the pick, or if we think they’ll jump all over Manziel, trade with the Rams, they don’t need a QB and we’d jump ahead of those that do. Bridgewater has every tangible and intangible you could want in a QB. Those types don’t come around every day. We only have 5 or 6 spots to move up to get him, make it happen.

@Harry – Ryan still had the Sanchez tattoo on his leg so he couldn’t take one in the first. Ok, admittedly, bringing the jets into it didn’t do any favors for illustrating my point the way I envisioned it when I was writing. I’ll grant you that last year’s qb class was indeed worse than this one. I just think that time will show us that the divide between the two groups won’t be as big as you do. I think give years will show this to be a pedestrian qb class like the Freeman, Sanchez, Stafford class

Patrick, Free’s QB class would be a much better argument – mostly bc how the heck can you compare them today? Yes, thank you for including the Jets, I meant to, but they did not get in there; really, almost the same thing could have been said about the Jags, Bi-Polar Browns and Cardinals. Tanking is probably the second most disgraceful thing to do in any sport, but especially in pro football. Cheating is the first. These people get paid disgusting amounts of cash, the president of the United States gets paid a fraction of what these guys do, and it’s no question which job is tougher. You don’t get paid that much money to give 50% or less of your effort and loaf around just because your team is losing. People really started to respect Rah after he said his team would win 10 games, and what do you know he actually did it. But all of it was lost when his team obviously tanked it after playing Lovie’s Bears across the pond. If you lose, you lose. So be it. But nobody can fault you for giving it your all.

I remember seeing the “alternate black uniforms” for the Bucs in Madden, doesn’t look half bad lol but I hope they don’t change the jerseys. Changing the helmet and especially the logo is bad enough. But who knows, it could stick like when the Bucs switched from the creamsicles.

@BamBam – I won’t contest any of that. Last year was the inverse of this year with a slightly stronger FA qb class and a garbage draft qb class so teams went with the lesser of the evils and the best thing to come out of any of it (not including Peyton as he was hardly a question with anything other than his health) was a game manager who rode the tail of Jamaal Charles. This year we have a garbage FA group and a slightly better qb class but that doesn’t make them better than they are. Their high first round grades are based on the needs of the teams, not the fact that their talent is too good to pass up on

Please nnnnnnoooooooo!!!! An extra meaningless preseason game? Please don’t do it Glazers. All we need is for McCoy or David or Revis to go down with an injury. I love watching bucs, but not to the tune of “5” preseason games.

What a great way to springboard into the season, right off the heels of Brooks enshrinement. A great way to show the young team what greatness means. Go Bucs!!!!
