LeSean McCoy loves Darrelle Revis.
There used to be a war of words between stud cornerbacks Darrelle Revis of the Bucs and Richard Sherman of the Seahawks.
Well, the war of words was sort of one-sided, as Sherman likes to hear himself talk. Revis is more of an understated fellow. But it is still a cool debate. Which corner would you rather have?
For LeSean McCoy, a scary-talented running back for the Philadelphia Eagles, it’s a no-brainer. he would take Revis, so reports Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post.
Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy criticized Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, saying he wouldn’t want him on his team and prefers Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Darrelle Revis.
“I would take Darrelle Revis, he’s better,” McCoy told Sirius XM Radio. “If you watch Darrelle Revis’ tape, if you take his best clips, it’s not even close.”
Well, consider that Revis got to the Pro Bowl largely playing on a bum wheel. That’s pretty impressive.
What Joe is looking forward to seeing is how defensive-minded Lovie Smith uses Revis. Remember that once upon a time, Lovie was a cornerbacks coach. And Lovie is a good enough coach not to try to force a system down a player’s throat when that player may not be at his best in said system. In other words, expect Lovie to craft coverage to best utilize Revis.
It should be fun to watch.

As much as I like Revis, at this point in 2014 salary, I’d take Sherman. He is younger, cheaper, and is not coming off an injury.

I’ll put this out there for perspective, but you do know that we’re talking about two PA guys, McCoy and Revis, who both went to Pitt. That aside, At the top of his game, Revis is a better all-around corner. I qualified that because at the moment with Revis coming off an injury, Sherman has the numbers. But I would rather have Revis because of his experience and production over time. Sherman’s salary at the moment (going to go way up soon) makes him the value pick.

Actually Sherman is the one coming off an injury now (although a less serious one). And don’t for a second think Sherman won’t want are is money very soon from Seattle. The Revis deal is done and actually protects the Bucs very well. I’m perfectly happy taking Revis over Sherman now or any time. He doesn’t go and shoot his mouth off like an idiot at the smallest perceived slight. He does his talking with his play.

I think Revis posesses leadership qualities that I haven’t seen in Sherman….which CB would you rather have working with younger players? Perhaps Sherman has what it takes…I just haven’t seen it.

Presumably the debate supposes that hypothetical both players are playing at their top form, no effects from either of their injuries.
That being the case I would probably go with Revis. I think Sherman is every bit as good a “cover corner” as Revis and maybe even slightly better, but Revis is much better in run support.
I paid attention to Revis tackling last year. I wanted to know if he was a matador like Deion Sanders waving the cape as they went by, or an efficient tackler like Ronde Barber, who while not a big hitter always found a way to get the guy on the ground.
Revis is like a more physical Ronde. He certainly picks his spots, he is one of the smallest guys on the field at all times, but he’s not afraid to stick his nose in there when required. Revis can be physical which is why I’d take him over Sherman. Then again I haven’t seen nearly as much of Sherman as I have of Revis.

Revis – better tackler and just as good if not better in coverage. Excited to have him healthy this year. I was worried he would injure something else playing last year on a not 100% knee – glad he made it through.

I think Revis is hands down the better corner. Sherman is a system guy who stays on one side of the field, Revis is asked (hopefully) to shadow the baddest receiver on the other team. Until I see Sherman lock down a #1 for an entire game I really don’t see the debate here.

I actually don’t mind the money Revis is making. When there was talk of getting him I was against it beause of the money but they way the contract is structured changed everything.
Say what you will about Dominick, but he was a master negotiator. He has pulled of some great trades. The Gaines Adams trade, the trade that landed us two first rounders in one draft, the Revis deal.

Sherman is a excellent corner and Revis a great player. There is a slight difference.
Sherman does not flip sides or play the slot – Revis can play any and everywhere.
Sherman like to have attention and need sound bite or billboard material to motivate and drive him. Revis does not.
Sherman (IMO) makes the game too much about him and not about the team accomplishments.
I see Revis is FAR MORE athletic and fluid in his hips than Sherman – the film shows that. Revis is way more stronger and excels better in press.
Sherman is longer but I can say hes to be respected but Revis just all around a better corner. I am excited for the situations that Lovie will give place Revis to dictate to offense and the opportunities to win against lesser opponents. This defense has to be top 10 if not higher if done correctly!

When was the last time anyone saw revis get toasted like Sherman did agains Ty Hilton. In a last minute scenario I would take revis all day over Sherman because of his track record. However if I was drafting a team due to his age I would take Patrick Peterson over both of them due to his versatility as a kick/punt returner as well. Would be happy with any three of them on my team though.

Idk about anyone else but I can honestly say Sherman and the rest of the Seahawks DB’s do nothing but hold and tug all the way down the field and should be called for way more Defensive Pass Interference calls than they do and only get away with it because they do it ALL the damn time.

This is ridiculous. So a player in the heat of the moment in the NFC Championship who was facing his opponent, Michael Crabtree, for most of the game, is interviewed and is emotional and now he is a thug? Give me a break. He didn’t rob a bank or steal a car. And if you were to watch the entire video that is online showing Sherman before and after the interview, you’ll clearly see that he wasn’t intimidating any reporter. And we all know if Sherman was a Buc, we would be loving every minute of it. In fact, we had a Sherman like player in regards to his postgame comments/antics and his name was Warren Sapp. Heck, we had guys like that on both sides of the ball who would run their mouth and back it up, see Keyshawn Johnson to cover the offense. All three guys are winners and played hard in big games.
Having said all that, I do think Revis is the more complete player, however, Sherman is only 24 and has only been in the league for a couple years. He’ll continue to get better, but I think Revis will show the world why he should still be viewed as the best CB in the NFL starting next September.

Joe wrote this once before, but with NFL players, the WWE is huge. What Sherman did with Erin Andrews is nothing different that Rowdy Roddy Piper, Ric Flair, Jesse Ventura or Macho Man Savage used to do, or what current rasslers do. It’s actually pretty smart in a way. Funny.

There simply hasn’t been many complete corner to EVER play this game, or complete defensive backs period; for that measure.
You have to understand, A COMPLETE CORNER CAN PLAY ANY COVERAGE!!!. He can even play nickel ,and some safety in certain sets.
*The closest I’ve ever seen is Ronnie Lott, Mel Blount and Rod Woodson (Even though you can make a strong argument for Ronde).

And what I mean by PLAY-is that he must EXCEL in any coverage. He therefore, must be tenacious against the run & pass. Making IMPACT PLAYS all over the field Plenty have been able to shut down receivers. Only a select few take it to another level.

Revis got to eat pine-apple on name alone this year because his performance on the field didn’t merit such a trip. I can’t get past the million a game deal, so I would take Sherman for his value. Unless Revis can show me he has regained his pre-injury old self again, I’m afraid he is all just fluff at this point and not worth the money.

sherman seems like he’s headed down that nnamdi asomugha path…he’s great in pete carroll’s system, a cover 3 is not putting a man on an island by himself, its a zone and he plays man from time to time but thats when he’s at his best, sherman is the best defensive holding corner in the league, seattle is smart enough to hide their weaknesses
dont tell me he can lock down the #1 receiver for 16 weeks in man on man coverage because he hasnt done it yet like revis has….ronde only got the credit he deserved once he moved to safety but in the tampa two he never got credit cuz he played zone, the only reason sherman is getting it is because he has a big mouth and he has to keep reminding everyone he’s the best.

Those numbers are impressive but you still cant compare that to what revis did, if his number the first 3 years are better than revis it’s only because he doesnt have the respect that revis has, even coming back from a knee injury people wouldnt throw his way, sherman doesnt have that kind of respect which is why crabtree and colin tried him on that play he batted down in the nfc championship…..if revis got to the probowl on name alone then that proves the point….with that mouth sherman has and thinking he is the best, how long does he have left on that contract before he goes for the big payday like all top players do. ill give you that he’s out playing his contract but your still 2nd best if you become the best after #1 corner gets hurt…..
i’d rather compare 2014 seasons and see how’s the best with both healthy

I disagree with trading one of the top 10, if not, top 5 DBs in the league. Are you mad?! And, don’t you think Sherman is about to get P-A-I-D?! So what value is there?
LUV-They changed the rules because of Mel Blount. He was tackling or beheading receivers before they ever got the ball. Lott played safety. Woodson was probably the most complete of the three, in my humble opinion.
I think that it would be better to compare DBs in the current era with all these crazy rules don’t you think.

RONNIE LOTT PLAYED CORNER 1ST AND PLAYED IT AT AN ALL-PRO LEVEL. He’s was an ALL-PRO at every defensive back position on the field. Even when rules changed Mel Blount was still shutting wide receivers down.
And I would trade Revis in a Heart Beat. Wouldn’t blink.

You can say trade Revis but not GM will do that this year with that contract. You are better off just cutting him, because I do not see any team trading for him with that contract or him taking a pay cut. He will more likely ask for a release before that ever happens, because he can pick his team and get another contract with the team of his choice and the Bucs get nothing.

If history shows anything it’s that larger corners have a harder time lasting long periods of time in the league. Perhaps as they age agility is sapped and loosing a step hurts them more than the smaller or average sized corners. He may be younger but for this reason and others my pick would be Revis.

i think the neck surgies for peyton manning were just as devastating as a knee surgery for a cornerback, peyton manning is still one of the top cornerbacks in the league….mental skills are just as important as physical….revis has the work ethic to be #1 again and as a buc fan thats what i hope for…i mean he is a buccaneer so why say anything else

I don’t think there’s any question Sherman had a better season than Revis. Hard to top All-Pro, huge numbers, and a championship. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a better CB. By comparison, Nick Foles had a better season than Tom Br-ady (trying to beat the filters), but I’d still take the Golden Boy. I think Revis is about to have an MVP type season next year, so we’ll see who’s better this time next year. It will also be interesting to see how Sherman responds to an offseason of attention like he’s never seen before. They are both great corners and I’d be thrilled to have either.

until sherman gets his new contract, i think most GMs would rather have him than a $16 million revis. taking money out of it, well….i don’t think revis’ teammates ever approached the talent level sherman has backing him up, so the fact that it’s even a debate is pretty telling.
sherman’s 20 picks over 3 seasons is interesting to me – it’s possible that revis wasn’t even thrown at 20 times in the 3 years preceding the injury (exaggeration, but you get the idea)….why did people just stop bothering to one guy, while targeting the other guy enough to nab an interception every 2 or 3 games?

Ok, so when Revis played for the Jets he had a great pass rush, right? Didn’t stop him from being defensive player of the year (an award that almost never goes to a CB). Sherman had a great pass rush. Do you think if Myron Lewis had a great pass rush he’d be a great CB? Fact is, having a great pass rush helps a corner, but doesn’t make a corner. A pass rush is going to help a great CB make more plays, because the QB is going to have to get rid of the ball faster than he wants to. If the Cb isn’t any good (or doesn’t fit within a system), it’s not going to matter how great the pass rush is. This is fact.
As for the $16M per year, it doesn’t affect us in one bit. We have money left over. You apparently want us to go all Philadelphia Eagles from a few years ago and get every big name free agent available. Guess what, that doesn’t work. Never has, never will. We have the money to pick up a couple big name free agents, and then enough to pick up some lower priced ones. Rookies don’t make any money anymore, so we’ll have no problem affording them. However, it’s silly to think you are going to hit on all your draft picks (I can just about guarantee you that we won’t find a CB that can even hold the jock strap of Revis). Like him or not, Dominik left us in great shape cap wise. Nobody can argue that. If we are in cap trouble, then you can complain away about Revis. Until then, you are being foolish. If that’s name calling, then so be it (people sure do get sensitive nowadays, geez). You are the Thomas 2.2 for Darrelle Revis. That didn’t work out too well for 2.2 with McCoy, now did it?

To say restructure for a contender? That won’t happen. They will not trade for him unless it’s for a 2-6 round pick and that’s just in the 2014 draft. Who would trade for him? You can say renegotiate his contract all you want (won’t happen), but who can afford him? Revis will not (I can tell from the Jets situation) take a paycut. Renegotiate his contract to turn it more into guaranteed money is more like it, or he become Revis of the Jets and want to be cut.

Revis shouldn’t take a pay cut. I wouldn’t if I were him, and neither would any of you. We all know he’ll never see all of that money anyway. If teams can cut you at any point, why should the players bend over and take less money? In the NFL, you are one injury away from being out of a job. Take care of yourself and your family, because this is only a game to the fans. Within the walls of the organization, it’s as cut throat a business as there is.
Revis had a great season last year under some terrible circumstances. First, he blew out his knee the year prior, and it’s doubtful he was ever fully healthy. Losing a 1/4 step in the NFL can be the difference between being an all-pro and a scrub. Second, he played in a horrible scheme, with more coverage busts than I think I’ve ever seen. How many times did we see our corners clearly expecting help, but help not being there? Third, he had a terrible pass rush. No CB is going to thrive when the defensive line is busy choreographing dance steps rather than rushing the passer. Not to mention all the blitzing, which left guys on an island time after time after time. I don’t care how great he is, you can’t continue to leave your CB’s alone over and over again, with no pass rush. Finally, we were losing, which tends to make everyone try to do too much. Despite all that, he played at a Pro Bowl level. Imagine what’s going to happen next year with a real coach. Lovie is going to put him in a place to succeed, and he’ll be worth every single penny.

Amen to that, Hawaiian Buc. You don’t sell off an elite player who is just now 100% recovered from a serious injury, especially after dealing two high draft picks to obtain the player. I’m excited to see how Revis and the rest of the defense peform this coming season.

Sherman was far better than Revis in 2013. And clearly some don’t follow Sherman if they think he’s a bad teammate. He’s adored by Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas, Russell Wilson. All high high quality people. He certainly talks too much but he’s the only player in years to lead the league in interceptions after being targeted the least. He has the elite cover skills but far better ball skills than Revis. that comes from his day as a wr.Revis in his prime is the best i’ve ever seen but he’s no longer that same guy.
