Aaron Murray And The Bucs

Joe gets this question a lot so he decided to run with it today. The question is, what does Joe think of Aaron Murray?
Joe thinks a lot of him. One of the best quarterbacks to put on the pads in the SEC, Murray a knee injury late in the 2013 Georgia season that really sucked for him. But it may be good news for some NFL team, specifically the Bucs.
In this NFL.com video, Murray, who played for Plant High School in Tampa, talks with NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah about his rehab on his knee following ACL surgery. Murray attended Senior Bowl practices this week but could not play. He hopes to be healthy enough to wing some passes around for scouts and front office types in mid-April.
Joe always liked Murray and was a bit surprised when Joe spoke to a man with deep knowledge of the draft last fall. The source told Joe that Murray was a third round pick. Mind you, this was before his injury.
At best, Murray likely would be a fourth round pick. His knee won’t be repaired for another few months and being damaged goods, few NFL general managers are going to stick their neck on the chopping block for a quarterback on the second day of the draft.
Joe is of the mind that Murray, on the third day of the draft, would be an excellent value pick for a team needing a quarterback to lift the franchise to loftier goals than last place in a quarterback-loaded division.

Joe, your QB politicking is starting to get old. Real old. Opinions are one thing, but constant nagging is something entirely different. As a fan of the Bucs and of JBF I’m starting to really get put off by this obsessive compulsive QB campaign you’ve decided to embark on. You’re looking more and more like the one or two weirdos on here that can only post about Mark Dominik no matter the subject, and that’s definitely not a compliment.

Murray is a kid that could get some home town consideration in the late rounds, but there are several QBs in the middle rounds that are rated higher – Garropolo, Mettzenberger, McCarron, and Brett Smith.
He’s been hurt so he has little or no opportunity to improve his draft stock and his height is below the NFL unspoken 6 foot 2 rule. I liked some of his games at Georgia, so I think he’ll get some second looks!

I saw nothing wrong with the article, I thought it was great. Some people always want something new to read but complain that its low on substance, that makes no sense to me. I did not watch much college football this year so I like hearing peoples opinions about all players even QUATERBACKS. We dont know if we are going to keep Glennnon or not, so any insight of what or who his (maybe) replacement could be, is fine with me. Thanks Joe

You better believe Tedford will bring in quarterbacks not named Orlovsky to challenge/backup Glennon. I love Murray, this would be a fantastic day 3 pickup.

Ive always liked Murry and I’ve seen a lot of his games. But, I am so tired of injured players. This team is loaded with them. I think we need to drafting HEALTHY people for awhile.

So we’re gonna replace a guy in Glennon who had a third round grade with a much shorter, injured guy in Murray who also has a third round grade at best when healthy, but more like a fourth or fifth round grade at present? Does that about sum it up?

There will be many QBs taken before Murray, so he will probably last to round 5….a good pick for us there.
Joe may have finally come to realize that Johnny won’t be there at 7, so he is looking at other scenerios….Garoppolo in the 2nd….Murray.
I am pretty sure we can pick up another QB that will challenge Glennon…but to pick up one that could actually beat him….that may cost about 3 number ones and a number 2….
I like having the choice of a mobile QB or Glennon so…I’m not terribly excited about Murray, Mettenberger or McCarron…..but I like Garoppolo.

To all the Glennon “Haters” he is going no where he signed I think a 3yr rookie deal, so at worse for him he will be the #2 here. Murray could be a real steal if he somehow fell to us in the fourth round (we do not have 3rd as of now). I have stated many times in the past I like the gamble in the 2nd rd (A.j. Mc) or Murray in the 3rd (if we somehow acquire one) or the 4th if the injury allows him to slip that far.
There is no doubt we will see better competition here for Glennon and the starting gig, but don’t be too surprised if he beats out a rookie or even some FA that is brought in to compete with him.
Glennon has proven to be durable and accurate on short routes. In college he was accurate with the long ball as well, not to mention he is a lot more mobile than people want to give him. The truth is we do not know what Schiano asked him to do. Lovie and his staff are going to capitalize on the players they have talents.
It sure is going to be a fun offseason.

I agree with Joe on this one. You guys have to realize, taking Murray on day 3 does not mean he is our franchise guy. Its just adding a guy with some good potential to compete for the job for a few years at least. Murray needs work for sure, but he isn’t a bum as far as prospects go. I would love the move to take him in the later rounds.

@FLBoyInDallas Yeah because draft grades matter have you ever heard of guys of the name of Tom Brady, Arian Foster, or hey even undrafted ex-Buc LeGarrett Blount. I don’t agree with Murray but knock knock? Is anyone home in there? You can’t base your prediction of a player of their draft grade. We need to get a vet like McCown draft a rookie either in the first round or take a shot on a late round guy and let them duke it own in Preseason winner take all.

Outside of the draft and who is picked in what round, is there any other subject with a bigger question mark then who will the quarterback for the Bucs next year?
I can’t wait until the day comes and we are worried about who will be catching balls or blocking for the Bucs QB that is playing in the Pro Bowl or selected All Pro. Until that day comes we will have to settle for debating on who that QB will be and how to acquire him (or for you MGM members, giving Mikey more time, lol).

If Aaron is available in the fourth round and he’s my next best ranked QB on my board, then by all means take him. But only after QBs like Carr, McCarron, Garoppolo, Mettenberger, Smith, Fales, Boyd, Thomas, and Shaw are already gone would I take Aaron.

A healthy Aaron Murray is better than that of Mettenberger AND McCarron. The guy has constantly won games with a less talented supporting cast than teams like Alabama, LSU, and A&M. This past season the Dawgs suffered injury after injury and Murray was eventually having to work with a bunch of inexperienced freshmen and sophomores until he finally went down with one too. But not before he beat Mettenberger’s LSU and Clowney’s South Carolina. He led the Dawgs to multiple SEC Championships (did not win unfortunately) and was less than 5 yards away from a National Championship berth against Alabama when the clock ran out. He’s mobile when need be and can throw the deep ball. Only major question about Murray is if he can come back from a torn ACL otherwise he might’ve been a late second rounder.
Keep in mind Murray didn’t have 2 years of Knowshon Moreno and A.J Green to help pad his stats like Stafford did. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Bucs use a 4th rounder on Murray and let him rehab and compete with Glennon down the road. That way the Bucs can use their high 1st rounder on a bigger hole than QB like say Offensive or Defensive line or Sammy Watkins for a good No.3 WR or Kahlil Mack to add with LVD and Foster for an intimidating LB corp.

After the senior bowl, as per JOE’s earlier post it might be Derek Carr, he’s had a solid week in Mobile and had great intangibles and work ethic. I didn’t think much of, but some of the mocks have the BUCS taking Carr and maybe it could happen. I wouldn’t be against it, but would prefer Mack or best pass rusher available. Long ways away, too much can and will happen, but after this week (last 3 days), I went from thinking no chance to a pretty good chance the bucs take Carr at 7.

Glennon needs real competition. Not an injured 3rd round QB or a retread vet QB. Someone with who’s an actual threat to take his job like Johnny Football or Bridgewater or any of the projected 1st round QBs. Bill Walsh traded for Steve Young while Montana was winning Superbowls!! If he’s as good as some of you believe he is, hopefully they’ll draft a top QB so he can prove it! And why draft someone that cant play right now? Makes no sense.

Our new GM has helped 3 teams reach the Superbowl, and everyone of those teams had a true franchise QB. And they had good defenses as well.
You are right, Glennon is not going anywhere…but he won’t be starting more than 8 games this year.
The Bucs are going to get a solid starting QB. Glennon has potential, but he is years away from achieving it. He is a developmental project. Ask yourself this, is Glennon anywhere near as good as Newton, Ryan or Brees? No? How long until he is? If ever? How many yearsdo you feel comfortable missing the playoffs while he grows?
They would be wasted years if he busts.
No way will the GM and Coach take that risk when their jobs are on the line. We are going after a QB, so you may as well get used to the idea.

My solution, if you can call it that would be to move up and draft either Teddy or Johnny. I know we have plenty of holes elsewhere but we can’t fill all of those this offseason anyway. Plus we probably won’t be picking high enough next year to get Maiola (sorry bout the spelling) or Winston. That is if they fit this new system were using. But I honestly think its Bridgewater or Manziel or nothing. None of the other QBs impress me (with my armchair GM IQ).
Draft picks only work if you use them. Its time this organization tools some calculated risks instead of waiting for things to fall in their lap.

Sheesh, you must think I’m hunting you down. I’m not. You just happen to say thing I feel like addressing.
The said, you are right in the above statement. Let me throw a question at you…which of the positions traditionally take longest to develop?
To answer my own question, I have to say QB. Next might be a spot on the oline maybe. WRs develop quick or bust quick. RBs the same. TEs take a little time.
On defense I would have to say CB takes longest to develop…in fact CB can probably take as long as QB sometimes.
CB is less of a need than QB though. We have Revis (staying) and Banks (his rookie season was better than any of Ronde’s first 4 years).
There is only one Oline guy worthy of the 7th pick overall.
There isn’t a dline guy worthy of a 7th overall either. Besides, I think DE will be addressed in free agency, and I think Clayborn will remain a starter.
I suspect Foster will be moved to strong side, so an ILB might be the pick. Or he could stay in the middle and an OLB could be taken later or in FA.
What’s left?
Quarterback…unless Clowney somehow falls to us, which is doubtfull. And if the Bucs get Jared Allen then DE is no longer a need.
We’re getting a QB. No dought about it.

I heard about that, but I like Teddy better anyway. He runs when he has to and scans the field better. Plus I read some weeks ago that the Texans are willing to trade out of the number one spot. So we will see. It’s gonna be exciting either way. This has been one of the best off seasons that I can remember in a long time. I can’t wait to see this team with a stout D and a spread offense.

Bonzai…I’m not saying it does not need to be addressed. The Bucs have no one on the roster to compare Glennon to. If there is a QB that is available that can unseat Glennon besides Teddy or Manziel then I’m all for it. I just don’t see one.
Until they get one to compare him to on their roster, this debate will go on and on and on. Still let the best man win the job. I think that after Manziel and Teddy, Glennon has a damn good shot to win the job.

I like Glennon, but I still think we should bring in some competition. Given the circumstances (hes a 3rd round pick, he has a new coach that is not tied to him whatsoever) I dont see how anyone can project him as the unquestioned starter going into next season. To the Mike Glennon Mob, theres no reason to get defensive, If he was meant to be the starter he will beat the competition. I aslo like Murray and would be ecstatic if we drafted him. That game he won with a come-from-behind victory to beat I believe it was Tennessee, really impressed me.

Lemme say this. I like Murray alot. I think hé would be great in the fourth or fifth round. Hé deserves better but the injury will make him drop. Also Why is everyone hating on glennon. Dude has à solid year without à réal supporting cast and we need à qb now? I remember when freeman had 10 tds and 18 ints and people were stoked about him. Glennon goes 19tds and 9 ints and hé needs to be replacéd? I dont get it.glennon is our guy. That being said i wouldnt mind murray as hé could offer à strong backup Maybe more. Maybe in a year or two trade him for a 2nd or 3rd or if glennon doesnt pan out a good backup plan.

Enough with the bitching and moaning about QB’s. The only article I want to see is who YOU think they should have drafted in what round who will turn into that “franchise” QB. Everybody wants one. Everybody knows one when they see one in the NFL. However i defy you to spot one before he enters the NFL. Was Russell Wilson a “franchise” QB when he was drafted. Not in most peoples minds. We all want the “franchise” guy but I would not be willing to sabotage draft after draft until I find one. Get the offensive and defensive lines first and then build the defense and start taking chances on QBs. Without the O and D lines and a strong defense, the QB is not going to be the savior.

overrated player even as a 3rd round maybe a free agent. He played for georgia but how many big teams did he actually beat (bama,LSU, DONT SAY FLORIDA OR SC.) if he wasn’t from tampa you would not hear a peep about this dude. You should have big numbers when you play 4 years in college, cause if you were great in collefe you would play only 2 years… again i say good QB’s this year in draft not one Great QB that is franchise.. rather see a fast receiver and other needs, instead trade for cousins

Sign me up for the “Anyone but Glennon” club. Here is my reasoning.
Glennon, in the last 5-10 minutes of every Close Game, has clearly gotten worse. WORSE. Where potential greatness in rookie QBs can be best found is in how the game slows down with the game on the line. Glennon’s reads, his decisions with the ball, ALWAYS, got worse in crunch time. Always.
Not saying that he can’t get better. But there is no way a good GM should bank on it. Even a little.

To be completely honest, I didn’t get to see the game so I don’t exactly know what your talking about, all I know is that it was a close game. but one could argue that we knew the offensive plays in our super bowl victory. The fact is there’s controversy and conspiracies in a lot of football games, even in the NFL. Would almost feel weird if there wasn’t one lol. The point I was trying to make was that he should have beat a team that ultimately competed for a national championship.

For those of you that don’t know, Aaron Murray is the all-time passing and TD leader in SEC history. Keep in mind some of the QBs that have been SEC QBs. Murray finished with 121 TD’s to only 41 INT’s and threw for at least 3,000 yards every single season finishing with 13,166 and an overall completion percentage of 61.5.
@THETRUTH – For having a terrible or injured supporting cast he still managed to beat teams like LSU, SC, and even Auburn (ya know the ones who went to the Title game and should’ve lost the most recent game to Murray if not for Tray Matthews). South Carolina is a good team as far as Im concerned. And you seriously think Cousins is a lot better than Murray? He got outplayed by Murray himself in the Outback Bowl. For something as little as a 4th rounder Murray would be a steal like Mike Williams was. But some of you just hate Glennon so bad you won’t take anything short of a top 5 draft pick QB. Not every good QB was drafted in the first round (Brady, Wilson, Kaep, Kurt Warner wasn’t even drafted, just to name a few). I’m not saying Murray is destined for greatness in the NFL, but don’t sell the guy short without even giving him a chance. He’s had a better college career than a lot of other QB’s including Glennon.

Joe is not any such campaign. Glennon appears to Joe as a nice backup.
What is so wrong with wanting improvement in the game’s most important position? If you somehow think Mike Glennon is as good or better than Cam Newton, Matty Ice or Drew Brees, Joe suggests you may need to take a break from Buccaneers.com for a few days.
So long as the Bucs have the worst quarterback in the division, winning a Super Bowl is little more than a pipedream.
The fact Lovie and Jeff Tedford’s comments about Glennon have been tempered and guarded should speak volumes.

Bottom line is nobody knows anything about anyones ceiling until they get out on the field. You just said yourself any rookie QB would be the worst in the division, how would you know if he has a chance to be better than any of the other qbs? By giving him a chance….

Joe I think teddy or Garrapolo are the best fits for this offense. I know you love JF but Cleveland and Jacksonville need sparks have more ammo and draft higher than us. It’s a long shot.

I get your point. But, since you didn’t see the game. After the first series of the second half, FSU started using towels to shield playcalls. When asked about the post-game presser, Jimbo acknowledged that Auburn was getting their offensive calls. You can actually hear an FSU receiver saying “Dameuyne is calling all our plays” on the sideline (Dameuyne Craig was FSU’s QB coach last year). More power to them but, it just shows how good FSU really was. As to the SB comparison, if compared correctly, it would have been like Oakland winning even though Gruden knew the playcalls.
But, I get your point. I don’t mean to degrade Auburn. They played hard. But, just imagine how much better a defense can play when you actually know what’s coming every play.

I don’t understand the blind faith that a 1st rd QB is magical. If a 1st rd QB has a higher ceiling than a 3rd (Glennon), then I’m OK with Glennon, since he has a higher ceiling than a 6th rd pick (Brady). Right? Or does this ‘logic’ stop at the 3rd rd?
The highways to the NFL stadiums are littered with 1st rd busts. There are no guarantees, and the QB position is more susceptible to failure than any other. Having said that, I do NOT want to go into next season with Glennon as the anointed starter, but the team has bigger (or equal) needs that have less risk in the first round. There will be ‘young’ veterans available after the draft, and maybe before.
There will also still be a QB left in the 6th.

It’s pretty simple people. New coach, new GM have a free pass with Glennon. They might sign a vet to compete with Glennon. But draft a QB in the 1st,2nd or 3rd round. That disapoints then get’s benched for Glennon. Would be the begining of the end for Lovie and the new GM. That simple. Ironic how if Glennon didn’t win that 4th game. We would be in possition to draft 1 of the big 3 QB’s. Did anyone notice we need an oh I dunno….a freaking offencive line. Maybe a DE or 3. Spence messed up so add DT. A WR or 3. There is no room in our draft for a 3 round backup QB. Nick’s and Davin will be cut. So an o-lineman will be the first selection. This Joe vs Glennon thing is comical and it’s only just begun

I dought any of these rookie QB throw 19TD to 9 INT’s. Glennon had a much better rookie season than Nick Foles. Nobody was quitting on him. If you were a Freeman guy….stop. Don’t post, you know nothing. Freeman guy’s resent the fact that they were dead wrong. Therefor have a hate on for Glennon. Time will tell, I’m all in on Glennon with an improved O-line,Martin,V-jax,William’s,Wright another FA TE and 1st or 2nd round WR. Seattle and SF have great defences. Kap and Wilson are overated because of that. Could these guy’s win with no defence…..not likely. They are not gunslinger’s. They are game managers with the ability to run. Look at Cam he couldn’t get the job done til the defence showed up.
