Too Much Made Of Derek Carr-Jeff Tedford Bond
January 21st, 2014It’s not like new Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford is the Tampa Bay head coach and Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr played for him in college.
If that were the case, then Joe might join his media brethren in thinking Carr could be the next Bucs franchise quarterback.
Tampa Bay Times beat writer Greg Auman typed a piece today that added fuel to the Carr fire. Tedford coached Derek Carr’s brother, David, at Fresno State many years ago, and Auman reports that Tedford tutored him recently and they’re like family.
Jiminy Christmas! The PewterReport.com crew pegged Carr as the Bucs’ pick at No. 7 overall in their recent mock draft, in part because of the Tedford-Carr personal connection.
Yes, Carr posted stout numbers with 5,000+ yards and 50 touchdowns last season, but he’s not coming to the Bucs — not at No. 7.
Just because Tedford likes the kid personally and knows him should mean nothing. Frankly, Tedford’s intimate knowledge of Carr just as easily could hurt the kid’s chances of coming to the Bucs.
Fans remember Raheem Morris’ lobbying for Josh Freeman after coaching him at Kansas State. And fans remember Greg Schiano turning the Bucs into Rutgers South. But Joe sees this situation differently. Tedford isn’t the head coach, doesn’t have NFL experience, and there are better QBs in this draft.

Joe’s pro-Johnny Football campaign has taken a new approach – take out his competition!
LOL! Hardly. Joe’s simply can’t imagine the Bucs grabbing Carr at No. 7. –Joe

I agree, Joe needs to clam down already. maybe even look for a Boston Market kellen winslow style!
January 21st, 2014 at 1:52 pm
Yeah, I agree. I dont think we will take him at 7, I dont see him as a first rd pick for anybody. I see why people think he could come here because of the friendship but I just dont see it happening. Whoever our next QB is, I hope he can be the unquestioned starter, its getting tough not having an answer to that.
January 21st, 2014 at 1:52 pm
Come on Joe, just because it is a different QB the Johnny Football doesn’t mean you gotta hate. This kid has just as much chance being picked at #7 as you boy Johnny does. We haven’t had the senior bowl or the combine yet and there is always some movement before the draft.
Myself, I don’t want the Bucs to draft any of the QBs in the 1st. There is a lot of gamble in drafting a QB in the 1st round. I would rather get a bluechip type player with less bust potential (Mack, Mathews, Watkins, Barr, Ebron) just to name a few the talent pool is deep in this years draft. Then take a gamble in the 2nd round on A.J. McKearns or a Tajh Boyd or possibly one of these QBs some how plummet down the draft board (Geno) and we can make a move late in the 1st for them.
January 21st, 2014 at 1:53 pm
Draft is so far out let’s get a GM already focus on evaluating players for next year because we don’t need Leonard Johnson playing at all or Teo Neshim whatever his name is
January 21st, 2014 at 1:56 pm
That’s ok Joe, I’d be doing the same but for Blake Bortles. But we both know Lovie will be selecting Khalil Mack – it will be the final piece of his defensive jigsaw once they have signed their free agents. Let’s hope one of these QBs drop to the second…
January 21st, 2014 at 2:05 pm
Jimmy Garoppolo Will be the better of the two Qbs and we can still grab him in the second rd if he continues to shoot up the draft board like he has been doing since the East -West shrine game, And he just got invited to play at the Senior Bowl game. Sammy Watkins and Jimmy in the 1st and second and I will be happy!!! Please pass on Carr!!
January 21st, 2014 at 2:08 pm
Derek Carr would be a horrible pick at #7. His numbers are enormously inflated due to the spread (throw it 60+ times a game) offense he ran in college. All of his snaps were out of the shotgun in 4 or 5 WR sets. Even if the Bucs wanted to take a flyer on Carr, I would almost guarantee he’ll still be there in the 2nd. I don’t think he’ll be a franchise QB so I wouldn’t draft him at all.
The media and their obsession of connecting dots is entertaining, but holds no real value. Next there will be a report out that we are gonna draft Carr because he drives a Car to One Buc Palace.
January 21st, 2014 at 2:10 pm
Sammy Watkins please!
QB is important but Vincent Jackson isn’t getting any younger, Mike Williams has personal problems (also starting a rap career???). If he is there at #7 we should take him (unless if Teddy is there for some reason). Sign a veteran QB and build that offense/defense line.
January 21st, 2014 at 2:15 pm
He = Lovie. lol
January 21st, 2014 at 2:23 pm
who’s this johnny football cat.
Joe, could you please post some info on him.
January 21st, 2014 at 2:23 pm
Anybody sold on Derick Carr simply needs to go look at his passing metrics, specifically, how many of his completions occurred BEHIND the line of scrimmage. He is a nice college system QB at a mediocre program who will be a career back up in the NFL. Drafting him at #7 would be a joke when there may be an electric play-maker like Sammy Watkins available or a franchise-caliber Tackle like Robinson out of Auburn.

I would like to see us Jimmy garoppolo in the 2nd or 3rd round
January 21st, 2014 at 3:03 pm
looks like we got our new GM. It’s Jason Light or however you spell his name
January 21st, 2014 at 3:03 pm
Adam Schefter reports Jason Licht is our new GM.
January 21st, 2014 at 3:10 pm
If you guys are in love with Jimmy G. you really need to check out Brett Smith of Wyoming. http://draftbreakdown.com/players/brett-smith/
January 21st, 2014 at 3:21 pm
Why has there not been a story on Johnny Football yet today? Joe, you’re losing your edge. 🙂
January 21st, 2014 at 3:31 pm
These things can be legit – remember how much the Josh Freeman and Raheem Morris Kansas State connection panned out. The Devil you know sometimes is better than the Devil you don’t. Although in this case, not so much…..
January 21st, 2014 at 3:53 pm
I’m liking Jimmy Garropolo in the 2nd, he’s the best QB in the draft.
He’s also the best looking (handsome) QB in a generation. Imagine, a young John Stamos at QB, instead of Geoffrey. Lock up yours wives, daughters and girlfriends.
The best name for our new Rockstar……………………MC Licht

Honestly i think his brother hurts his draft stock.dors that make sense?
January 21st, 2014 at 3:58 pm
If Lovie takes Carr in the first round, I’m in favor of firing him before the second. But there is NO way the Bucs will take Carr. If there is a premier DE available, that will be the pick. If not, it will be the best available athlete. I would be happy with a DE, WR, or O-lineman, but the Bucs haven’t always tried to make me happy.
January 21st, 2014 at 4:15 pm
We all that Mo Claiborne was gonna be a Buc based on need and LSU DB coach on the staff and how Seattle didn’t go for the USC safety instead Pete Carrol went for Earl Thomas. Only Schiano with all the Rutgers players was completely loyal to his college players, except the one he should’ve got with Ryan Logan.

LOL @ ROBERT6
January 21st, 2014 at 4:25 pm
Buc87…I’m NOT changing my name. So what are we going to do?
January 21st, 2014 at 4:28 pm
No I read some direct quotes from Derek and his father in an article saying Tedford is basically their family.
He’s attended his games during his year off and tutored him at QB as well in that year.
Also spent time teaching him growing up from when he was a little boy while Tedford was David’s coach.
There is definitely an established bond there.
Does it mean we’ll pick him? I don’t know about that, but there’s a bond.
January 21st, 2014 at 4:33 pm
Let’s see:
Rah picked a “franchise QB” he previously coached
Schiano picked a franchise QB he had hoped to coach
Tedford might pick a guuy he coached.
Are we supposed to be excited about this?
January 21st, 2014 at 4:42 pm
Rah didn’t coach Free seeing as he’s defensive.
Schiano never coached Glennon.
Tedford has been hands on with Derek’s development at the QB position since he was a little boy.
Much different lol, if there was ever a time to trust a coach with a decision about a QB it would be in a circumstance like this.
I’m sure Tedford wants to succeed so he’ll make the right call and not one based off emotional ties whichever one it is.
January 21st, 2014 at 4:48 pm
Just like Joe has been pimpin’ Johnny Football, I’m going to keep on pimpin’ Garopolo. Watching that kid throw the rock with that quick release and accuracy makes me think he’s the best QB in this draft.
January 21st, 2014 at 5:04 pm
@Buc1987, how about TheRealBuc87? 😉
January 21st, 2014 at 6:02 pm
@ ROBERT6, The day is still young. I’m pretty sure Joe is staring at the shrine he has built in his closet of All World Johnny Football wearing a Bucs #2 jersey. Thinking of any story he can write about him.
January 21st, 2014 at 11:12 pm
With Tedfords attention to the QB position you will see a much more confident and sucessful Glennon next year…..we have bigger issues to fill….and can always get a FA QB rather than waste a pick on “might be good guy”…
I support Glennon…..big upside
January 22nd, 2014 at 8:18 am
Johnny Football is the best player in the draft and we need a quarterback.
January 22nd, 2014 at 1:28 pm
Carr is wayyyyy better than Johnny Foolsball. But I guess if you prefer a QB with the body of a 13 yr old who runs in circles 20 yards behind the LOS and tosses up prayers with a noodle arm than JFF is the QB for you.
January 23rd, 2014 at 12:00 am
I thought we didn’t have a second round pick?
January 23rd, 2014 at 12:20 am
Never mind. My bad.
