More Assistants Named
January 9th, 2014This evening the Bucs announced/confirmed the hiring of more assistant coaches under Lovie Smith, new offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.
Here are the names/positions:
Marcus Arroyo: quarterbacks
Joe Cullen: defensive line
Andrew Hayes-Stoker: wide receivers
Dave Kennedy: head strength and conditioning
Larry Marmie: senior defensive assistant
Hardy Nickerson: linebackers
Kevin O’Dea: special teams coordinator
Mikal Smith: safeties coach
Tim Spencer: running backs coach
Ben Steele: offensive quality control
Matt Wiegand: assistant offensive line coach.
Presumed offensive line coach Tony Sparano was not part of the official release.
Hayes-Stoker seems like a curious hire at wide receivers coach. He’s 34 years old and was a college fullback/running back. He worked as an assistant wide receivers coach with the Bears under Lovie Smith before leaving for a running backs coach job at Florida International University last year.
Joe doesn’t know the guy, but one would think Tedford would have had a more seasoned receivers coach to turn to.

Hardy does indeed carry the title Linebackers Coach, so much for all that assistant nonsense we were debating about lol.
The Bucs site has a breakdown of each of the guys listed, very informative.
I’m excited to see how this all plays out

Mikal Smith: safeties coach is Lovie’s son

For those who are looking for any edge on Johny Football,New head strength coach Kennedy was with Texas A&M last six years.Strength coaches at least on the D1 level are way more involved with players then most think.Im sure a complete inside look at the kid will be happening by this staff.I think this is a real plus as to an inside feel for how tough he really is.

PR- what’s this “We” stuff? It’s all your argument. The burden of proof was on you!
Well said, Dallas. –Joe

January 9th, 2014 at 6:42 pm
I’m glad you approve Joe, I’m sure it makes him feel all warm inside.
January 9th, 2014 at 6:45 pm
Uh well idk what the heck a wide receiver coach even does. I feel like Vincent Jackson and mike Williams know what to do.
January 9th, 2014 at 6:49 pm
lol at all of that PRB, Dallas and Joe.
January 9th, 2014 at 6:54 pm
At this point….you just have to go with trust….you have to trust that Lovie, Leslie & Jeff are hiring people that they beileve will help them succeed…..that’s the bottom line.
This being their first decision…..they also know that it will be thoroughly scrutinized.
I’ll hold my comments because I have no earthly idea whats in their thinking.
January 9th, 2014 at 6:55 pm
!987 You know me, I could care less lol
As far as Hayes-Stoker he was with Lovie on his staff from 06-12, 3 of them with WR’s. Not that weird of a higher, when that is considered.

TBBF
My conversation was with you after all, wanted to say you were right.
He was indeed the LB Coach, not just a defensive assistant
I was wrong for reading into all the assistant talk that was going on per the beat writers on twitter.

I am a huge Lovie Smith fan. Joe/somebody tell me that Lovie did not commit a an overt act of nepotism when he named his son to Safeties coach, giving him the responsibility of teaching Goldson and Barron. I hope I’ve got this wrong, I’ve done it before. Please tell me that he did not just do that!
January 9th, 2014 at 7:16 pm
Perhaps…Hayes-Stoker…is a coach first……
January 9th, 2014 at 7:20 pm
Andrew Hayes-Stoker begins his first season with FIU football in 2013, serving as the Panthers’ running backs coach.
Hayes-Stoker comes to FIU after spending the last three seasons on the Chicago Bears’ coaching staff as an assistant wide receivers coach.
Prior to being named to the Bears’ coaching staff by former head coach Lovie Smith, Hayes-Stoker spent the previous four years (2006-09) as the team’s football operations and offensive assistant, carrying out football and business related duties in that role.
As the Bears’ assistant wide receivers coach, he supported the position in all capacities, including running position meetings, conducting drills and providing one-on-one teaching tools along with film study. In addition, Hayes-Stoker assisted the offensive coordinator with unit meetings and planning.
In his previous role as the team’s football operations and offensive assistant he worked with drawing passes and other facets for the Bears’ virtual game book, helped facilitate offensive scout team and quarterback meetings, in addition to other coaching duties.
Hayes-Stoker started his coaching career in 2005 at Texas A&M under former head coach Dennis Franchione. During his tenure with the Aggies he was responsible for presenting weekly scouting reports as well as self-scout tendencies to the Head Coach. He coordinated recruiting weekends for visiting student-athletes, did film breakdown and administered walk-on tryouts.
Hayes-Stoker played college football at Texas Christian (1999-02) under Franchione and his successor Gary Patterson. He was a two-time team captain. Off the field, he was honored by the Western Athletic Conference and Conference USA being named to the league’s Academic Teams, in addition to earning All-American scholar honors.
After graduation, Hayes-Stoker worked as a recruiter for TCU (2004-05) before heading to Texas A&M. He earned both his Bachelor of Business Administration (2001) and Master of Education (2003) degrees from TCU.
As a star high school player coming out of Arlington (Texas) Lamar, Hayes-Stoker was named the Fort Worth Star-Telegram Offensive Player of the Year, Arlington Morning News Offensive Player of the Year and District Most Valuable Player as a senior. He was also selected to the all-area team by both the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Dallas Morning News.

@ PR
Not a problem….good of you to acknowledge…..Your answer on the person being away from the NFL was probaly right…it depends on the person. I imagine Hardy, being the real pro he is hasn’t missed anything!!!
January 9th, 2014 at 7:31 pm
@ Northend
Good insight on the Dave Kennedy’s Texas A&M experience…..we have two other potential high draft picks from there other than Johnny Football……Matthews & Evans…..so his opinions may come into play with our draft.

Hopefully that is the case, for the Bucs sake

I wanted to know more about what a “Quality Control Assistant” did….for those who are interested:
A quality control assistant’s job is rooted in game preparation. They usually work at least one or two weeks ahead in the regular season.
They prepare the statistical analysis as well as the initial video study of upcoming opponents.
The defensive quality control assistant breaks down opposing offenses, including how often they line up in specific formations and how they use various personnel groupings.
He charts down-and-distance situations, field position, substitutions, etc., and then gives that report to the team’s defensive staff when they begin their game planning each week during the regular season.
.

Well, I may be a minority of one, but this bunch neither thrills me not fills me with confidence.
January 9th, 2014 at 7:57 pm
I love the nickerson hire….that dude was the emotional foundation with what became the best d over a decade….we need MEN on this team and he’s the guy to bring that out
January 9th, 2014 at 8:08 pm
Lovie’s son should be picking up footballs after practice, not coaching safeties! WTF!

Lovie’s son making a name for himself
Mikal Smith has coached Bears nickel backs to 6 picks in 11 games
December 03, 2011|By Vaughn McClure, Chicago Tribune reporter
Mikal Smith’s parents taught him a precious lesson long ago: No matter how bad your situation seems to be, someone else has it worse.
The oldest of Lovie Smith’s three sons, now a Bears assistant coach in charge of nickel backs, could motivate top nickel back D.J. Moore to beat adversity by telling him about the slow-growing, malignant tumor embedded in his brain.
Smith, however, has remained quiet about his abnormality, understanding the tragedy Moore suffered when his older brother was shot and killed in May.
“What I’ve been through in my life hasn’t been anything compared to what D.J.’s been through,” Smith said.
Smith could have approached his other nickel back, Corey Graham, and revealed his ongoing bout with serious kidney complications. But Smith realized Graham endured his own internal pain while watching his older brother go to federal prison on drug charges.
“I don’t spend a lot of time dwelling on the negative,” Smith said. “You don’t have time to sit there feeling sorry for yourself.”
Smith, 35, is more intent on fulfilling his new job responsibilities than dwelling on his lingering health issues. He encourages Moore and Graham to play with the same type of focus.
It’s no surprise the duo has combined for six of the team’s 16 interceptions this season. Secondary coach Jon Hoke praised Smith for the detailed notes he compiles daily for the nickel backs. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli lauded Smith’s coaching.
Joe cut this way short since Joe doesn’t reprint other people’s entire copyrighted work without paying for it or obtaining permission. That would be stealing.–Joe

Joe Cullen. Bucs new d line coach was arrested in 2006 for driving naked at Wendy s drive thru.Wow.
January 9th, 2014 at 9:15 pm
BullHockey I just read that article and thought about putting some of it up to show some of his qualifications.
Glad I didn’t too lol, nice catch
January 9th, 2014 at 9:48 pm
Hayes-Stoker? Cool another two last name guy!
BTW, PJ Fleck was about 34 as well, his absence was sorely missed as WR coach last season. Age is not an issue, results are.

“Mikal Smith has coached Bears nickel backs to 6 picks in 11 games”
Oh so it was the coach and not the players who got the picks?
January 9th, 2014 at 10:10 pm
Your right 1987
Why have coaches at all 😉
January 9th, 2014 at 10:12 pm
TBBF…Raheem the Dream was a defensive quality control assistant.
January 9th, 2014 at 10:13 pm
Man PRB…first Realist says I’m right… now you. Double whammy. Who’s next?
January 9th, 2014 at 10:27 pm
I am still a huge Lovie Smith fan. To be fair, I may have spoke too soon until I found out what the position entails and what Lovie’s sons qualifications are to do the job. Nepotism is a reality – all owners do it, some coaches do it.
It is a bit of an over reaction on my part to suggest that is what is occurring here. I’ll reserve my opinion until I learn more. However premature, it was an honest reaction driven by my desire to want so much for the Bucs to win and Lovie to succeed. In general, I’m pleased with the Staff and impressed with the pace that it is coming together!
January 10th, 2014 at 10:08 am
I can respect this staff and at least it’s not 100 coaches coaching one position and 50 assistant head coaches and advisors… People did all that cheering about Butch Davis, Jimmie Raye etc. and where did it get the team. My point is there is a reason why you hire the right HEAD coach. Just trust in that we have the “RIGHT” Head Coach because this staff will follow his lead.

Sparono just resigned with the Raiders. Per NBC Sports.
