Schiano Watch Is On
December 29th, 2013“We are committed to the plan that began 12 months ago with Coach Morris, and we look forward to building on the pieces that were put in place this season.” — Joel Glazer, January 2010
That was the one sentence, official written proclamation after Raheem Morris was under fire following his opening season, when the Bucs’ finished 3-13.
Team Glazer has yet to issue an endorsement of Greg Schiano’s third season.
Why is Team Glazer waiting, when they know it’s the question on the minds of every Bucs fan?
Perhaps Team Glazer wants to talk to Schiano first over bagels and orange juice in the morning? Or perhaps they’ll gather Schiano tonight for an analysis of the season?
Schiano is due to address the media at One Buc Palace at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow. Joe assumes Team Glazer won’t trot out Schiano and then fire him later, but there’s no way to predict. Chucky was canned a couple of weeks after the Bucs’ choked away a playoff berth following a 9-3 start.
If a decision has already been made to retain Schiano, then Joe suspects Team Glazer will be kind to the leader of the New Schiano Order and issue a statement tonight. There’d be no benefit for them to extend the “Fire Schiano” chatter that would fill every pore of the Tampa Bay media overnight and tomorrow morning.
Joe is watching and waiting.

Here’s to getting the news tomorrow.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:18 pm
There’s always hope.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:19 pm
Well it’s already tomorrow in Afghanistan. Can a brother get the news now?
December 29th, 2013 at 9:19 pm
This season was an excruciating debacle for Bucs fans. At least with new coaching, the fans would have something to look forward to next season.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:20 pm
Don’t even want to hear it! He’s not going any where..
December 29th, 2013 at 9:24 pm
If they intend to sell tickets next season they’d better start doing some work NOW!
December 29th, 2013 at 9:25 pm
Glazers probably don’t want to admit a mistake by firing Shiaaaano
And they certainly don’t want to pay another coach to sit @ home so the ball is in shiaano’z court if in fact penn state is even interested.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:28 pm
DHutch…they won’t sell tickets ANYWAYS!
December 29th, 2013 at 9:28 pm
Amish Boys are scared of the fake tough guy…nothing will happen other than a sacraficial Sullivan & hopefully Sheridunce.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:29 pm
I don’t know if I agree with it at this point, but I’ll bet they keep him for 2014.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:30 pm
If anyone saw anything today that makes you want Schiano back, please let me know. What a joke of a season.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:31 pm
Joe Schiano is under contract, so technically the Glazers dont have to say anything. Personally I hope they are the ones holding the press conference tomorrow
Of course, they don’t have to say anything. Raheem also was under contract when the Glazers gave that statement.–Joe
December 29th, 2013 at 9:31 pm
Schiano has proven over and over that he doesn’t know how to win in the NFL. The Bucs will never be any better than they are right now with him as coach. He just doesn’t seem to have in-game football knowledge or how to mange a game. The Bucs offense is dead last in the NFL and last in points scored in the NFC. Fire him now and bring in a real NFL head coach or next year will just be more of the same – LOSING.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:35 pm
If the bucs are gonna keep schiaaano they better find on hell of a OC if there gonna have a prayer in hell.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:36 pm
This coach is over his head. Please clean house and start again.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:37 pm
Well if Muschamp gets to keep his job, Shiano’s getting a raise.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:38 pm
Dom will be gone and Schiano one more year….mark it down.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:38 pm
@Clowney, Schiano does not strike me as the type to drive a PT Cruiser. He looks more like the type to drive a souped up moped with too large helmet, riding pants and jacket. (Picture sweetchucks from Police Academy) Yelling at other drivers for driving too fast as he mopeds down Dale mabry. PLEASE FIRE SCHIANO……PPPPLLLEEEEEAAAAASSSSSSSE!
December 29th, 2013 at 9:41 pm
Schiano might not be able to do the job…Rivera couldn’t last year either. But we know Dom can’t do is job.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:42 pm
If they fire Dummynick that is @ least something
December 29th, 2013 at 9:43 pm
#FIRESCHIANO #CLEANHOUSE
December 29th, 2013 at 9:44 pm
I think the Glazers hire a new GM, and see what he wants to do with Schiano. I suspect he gives him one more year and makes other staff changes. But why would you fire Schiano when at least half the problem still sits at his desk? When there is a problem, start from the top and work your way down. All good organizations do that.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:46 pm
Because Shiano is incompetent
December 29th, 2013 at 9:49 pm
Santa…that may be. But Rivera was considered “incompetent”….the GM found him a new coordinator, and now he is a good coach.
The key was great drafts and very good personnel decisions. Do you think Dom is capable of that?
I agree that someone needs to be fired…maybe all of them…but if you don’t start at the top you will be a perennial loser.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:51 pm
It’s called accountability when you have a regression full of mediocrity and excuses.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:51 pm
BTW…I know Joe talks about the forth worst QB in the division. But what do we do about having the 3rd or 4th worst GM in the business. Now we may have the 3rd or 4th worst coach too…I’m just not so sure about it as we also have the 3rd or 4th worst talent in the division.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:52 pm
BTW…by worst “in the business” I mean in our division of course.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:55 pm
I think Shiano is way in over his head and is too much of a control great to let a coordinator bring him into the concept of the modern nfl.
December 29th, 2013 at 9:58 pm
BTW…I’m not saying Schiano can be a good professional coach. But let me give you a good example I hear about up hear on a daily basis. Do you know what the first step to reloading the Packers? They were bad after Holmgren left and Wolf retired, and slowly sinking. Yes they had Favre, but the championship days were long gone. The big step was hiring a new GM…Ted Thompson. Then he hired a good HC..MM.. a Gruden disciple.then they rebuilt the team…that is the formula…not grasping at a new coach every couple of years.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:01 pm
And think about it Santa..that is almost always how it successfully works….not a coaching carousel.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:01 pm
I feel like after the mess they had with scrambling to find a coach to replace Morris then they should probably keep what they have until they have a solid replacement locked up.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:03 pm
Dummynick and shiaaaano are a package deal
December 29th, 2013 at 10:03 pm
Patrick…they should have hired a new GM, and allowed him to pick the new HC…with Glazer input of course.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:05 pm
Santa…I would spare no expense to get the best GM I could. Then I would sit down with him and see who he wanted to be his new HC. And then I would go along with him. Schiano’s fate would be totally in his hands. Let a first rate professional do his job.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:12 pm
Mark … It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out go home and read the book.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:19 pm
Your “rocket science” and “book” references remind me of Jonny.
Too bad Richie hadn’t bailed out on us. I still think we might have had a couple more good years if he and monte hadn’t stabbed us in the back.
Monte could have waited till seasons end to announce he was going to baby sit lane. A lot of good that did him…if I believed in Karma, that would be a good example.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:22 pm
the smirking dom watch should be on….ever wonder why first choice coaches choose NOT to go to the bucs….the Machiavellian punk they have to deal with might have something to do with it….I’m sorry but as long as he is in charge you can write the season off
December 29th, 2013 at 10:25 pm
Sho…good point….wonder why we got turned down by the guys we wanted before Schiano was hired? It amazes me that folks can’t see these things. Maybe they don’t travel much and talk to fans of other teams and see what is going on around the league.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:29 pm
look even if they decide to get a new coach they will as always get the last pick…these weasels haven’t a clue on how to lead or build….they literally spit in bucs fans faces while they starved the team of resources to over pay for manu..fact…now they think they can rebuild with busted has beens?….sorry but these are the type of grifters that will move without flinching after draining this community of every dime available after we have had enough and will no longer buy….eff me?…..EFF YOU!
December 29th, 2013 at 10:33 pm
The Amish twins need to clean house. The experiment has failed, lesson learned. Draft Manziel. This would bring some hope to fans and national media coverage to the Bucs along with nationally televised games.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:34 pm
Jiminie Christmas they shouldn’t have fired Chucky in the first place. If you’re going to fire someone replace them w someone just as good if not better. Replacing Dummynick or Shiano shouldn’t be that daunting due to the fact they can’t do any worse for CS.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:34 pm
mark….they still think that our weather is our ace in the hole…NOPE…where would you rather coach? seattle …san fran?….not even close
December 29th, 2013 at 10:35 pm
@ mark2001
You have to hire a new coach every couple of years when you keep hiring the wrong ones. Gotta keep trying to stop the bleeding
December 29th, 2013 at 10:39 pm
Patrick…the guys you want first won’t come here. Remember, Schiano wasn’t the first choice. I think we need a well respected GM (not just people that tell you he is good because they don’t want you to let them go and have to deal with a good one) if we are to get the kind of HC that isn’t a crap shoot.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:50 pm
mark you’re spot on…if they connect with who will be their boss they would come….IMO the pop star comes off as he does to me as a fake that would run and hide when his choices gets you hanging out to dry….
Notice how there wasn’t a local show or national that he couldn’t talk to fast enough when he scored the big free agents at the beginning of the year….to him hiding behind schianos door while he’s getting lit up like a xmas tree….which might have something to do with some seriously illogical media loyalty*ahem….just sayin
December 29th, 2013 at 10:50 pm
I think shiano stays… We clean cordinators maybe bring in chud from browns and rod marinelli to bring back our tampa two days.. Plus idk why you guys are calling for doms head. Hes bringing in great talent. The gameplans just stink.
December 29th, 2013 at 10:52 pm
@ mark2001
Agreed. Glazers need to clean out the front office and bring in some experienced executives and coaches that have had some success and wins in the league and know what a Championship NFL team is suppose to look like.
December 29th, 2013 at 11:08 pm
buccin…when you look at a GM job, you firstly have to have a great talent evaluator. You will need to make serious salary cap and payroll decisions to manage it properly and at least be on even par talent wise with your competition. You can’t make big money mistakes. Dom has too many of them. Nicks has had a bad toe for a long time…we signed him. Wright was a head case. Jackson and Revis will be OK but are huge money players…they should be. So how many great draft picks have we had in the drafts under Dom…looks better lately, but we have had excellent draft positions and basically have David and McCoy as the two outstanding guys in those five years. Martin might be fine….Williams maybe a number 2 receiver…but his drafting has certainly been below average. Then ask yourself how many HC candidates have said “no”. Without replacing Dom, I’d almost guarantee you that you will be dealing with someone inexperienced or you will be disappointed. So the bottom line is that it is time to wish him well and cut him loose.
December 29th, 2013 at 11:13 pm
We need to fix the QB situation. Glennon is a great backup, but hasn’t shown enough, and definitely not elite.
Schiano would probably take the PSU job if offered. Glazers may wait to see how that plays out. Don’t want to endorse him and then have him leave.
December 29th, 2013 at 11:21 pm
I understand where you come from dude. I mean look at his record if you want to judge him for anything. And yes this is a “win now” league. But dom came in his first year with no sort of experience. We all screwed up at one point getting thrown to the wolves. So take out his “rookie mistakes” and look at what hes been doing the past couple years. Hes not as bad aa people make him out to be. To me looks like hes learning and evaluating great talent. Go back to joes earlier post in the season. He bought in a great d line george selvie chris jones and forgot his name but he plays for the bengals dt. But they were cut.
December 29th, 2013 at 11:26 pm
buccin…you give him 5 years, and we don’t know how much Schiano had in his “improved draft picking”, and they don’t want to give Schiano more than two? Regarding Selvie, etc.. realize that scheme and the players around them may make a difference as well. Not saying that mistakes aren’t made in that area. But after all, we are talking about undrafted role players. You are usually going to give a guy like Means you drafted the benefit of the doubt in that situation, for better or worse.
December 29th, 2013 at 11:28 pm
And Buccin…a good point made in another thread….how many young guys look like good picks because they are developing under Schiano? How good a draft is is partially a function of the ability to develop players.
December 29th, 2013 at 11:31 pm
If you think Schiano is a good coach. Ask yourself.Did he ever coach a game in the 2nd half where the Bucs were behind and we came back to win. Heck how about put up a couple TDs even. Nope you can’t. He sucks.
December 29th, 2013 at 11:46 pm
Captain…I don’t think he is a good coach…I don’t know how good a coach he is. But I know Dom is poor to average at best as a GM.
December 29th, 2013 at 11:56 pm
I imagine the we will find out tomorrow either way. I say clean house & bring in Bill Polian to run things.
