Schiano is always teaching
Bucs commander Greg Schiano spent years working for Joe Paterno at Penn State and wore a tie to work there everyday, so he told NFL.com back in September.
Why so formal?
Paterno demanded it because “we were teachers,” Schiano said.
That teaching spirit is what Darrelle Revis says he likes most about Schiano. Revis was asked last night on WDAE-AM 620 to reveal his favorite thing about the Bucs commander.
“I’ll tell you what, I like how coach is very detailed. He’s very intelligent. He’s very smart. He knows a lot of football. He keeps us learning all the time,” Revis said. “You know he’s very detailed about, you know, the field. (Laughs). What’s the width of the field? I mean, its everything down to a T. It makes you be a smart football player. So I’ll say that about Coach.”
Ronde Barber also used to share how he was impressed by Schiano’s level of detail and ability to relay in-depth knowledge of the game.
Obviously, that’s not enough to win football games. But it does help explain why Schiano was able to develop an inordinate amount of pro players out of Rutgers, as well as do a solid job of improving and developing Buccaneers.
Albeit a small factor, player development will be on the minds of Team Glazer as they evaluate Schiano’s future.

I think improved and developed players don’t make as many stupid penalties on the field.

It’s not uncommon for head coaches to take on coordinator gigs after they wash out of an HC job. I’d say he’d be great in that capacity if it doesn’t work out for him here. maybe one rung lower is the sweet spot for him. I’m not totally convinced he’s a bad HC yet but that comment about not doing something because it’s not what they practiced is still rubbing me wrong

Maybe though Schiano is so detailed oriented that it slows some players down that can’t handle that much info? BTW, I’m in the minority I guess because I think Schiano should be given another season. I didn’t believe anyone could turn this team around in one season.

Paterno said his coaches were “teachers?” Man, could I take that statement to another level, but I won’t out of respect for those that were injured by his “teachers.” I will however, say that any reference to Paterno in a positive way is no longer a feather in ones cap.

i think schiano would be a superb assistant HC and i can definitely see why he is\was a tantalizing head coach candidate. he seems to have a great handle on things 6 days out of the week, but it’s hard to reconcile this with the stubborn and self destructive stuff we see on sundays. being a bad gameday coach was a knock on him back at rutgers too.

I think the Glazers should step in and work with Schiano and Dom to do something about the offense. If neither is willing to fix it, he is out. Otherwise, I think Schiano and Dom will have a productive year three together

I think the Little General would be a competent special teams coach because of his experience competing in the Special Olympics.

I can see how teaching the players how wide the field is could be beneficial. Oh wait, no I can’t.
