Still Not Sold On Mike Glennon (Yet)
December 15th, 2013Joe knows many Bucs fans have already anointed quarterback Mike Glennon as their next franchise quarterback. Joe also knows if Bucs commander Greg Schiano returns, it’s hard to believe Glennon won’t be the Bucs quarterback.
Joe wants to believe in the guy, he really does. But Glennon had another meh game today, which is now his fourth lackluster game in a row.
Oh, Glennon did some good things. The Bucs’ lone scoring drive in the first half, in the waning moments of the second quarter, was a thing of beauty. Glennon completed five of six passes, ending the drive with an 11-yard strike to Vincent Jackson to pull the Bucs within 17-7.
There was also another play where Glennon, with the Bucs backed up deep in their own territory, dodged a safety, rolled left and hit Vincent Jackson along the left sidelines for a first down.
Other than that, Glennon looked mortal. Nothing special. Nothing you would expect from a franchise quarterback.
Is he better than Geno Smith? Yeah. Is he better than EJ Manuel? Yeah. Are those attributes special? Not particularly.
Simply put, Glennon, unless he totally blows up, is still the fourth-best quarterback in the four-team NFC South. And as long as you have the fourth-best quarterback in your division in a quarterback league, making the playoffs much less making a run at a Super Bowl is going to be a major uphill climb.
Joe believes rock star general manager Mark Dominik will have some long sleepless nights trying to decide if Glennon is indeed the man to bank on, or whether he should brush up on what type of Tex-Mex Johnny Football likes to grub out on.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:33 pm
Me too joe. He showed some flashes in this game where he was able to get us back in it. But I’m not sure she can win consistently. His mistakes have been consistent through out the season(i.e. holding on to the ball too long)
December 15th, 2013 at 7:37 pm
No problem with us drafting a QB to provide some “competition” for Glennon…..simple…trade down, pick up an additional pick then draft a QB with it…..but if all we have is 5 picks…we have other needs. This draft is deep with !QBs and there will be many FAs available because of it.
If Schiano is our coach, and I think he will be….you can forget Johnny!!!
December 15th, 2013 at 7:38 pm
Calm down, Joe. Johnny Boy finished 5th in Heisman voting this year, and behind FCS QB Jordan Lynch. So much for pulling an Archie Griffin. 😉
December 15th, 2013 at 7:38 pm
Not sold on Glennon.
But Barron has “arrived” and Banks is on “the cusp of elite.”
December 15th, 2013 at 7:38 pm
I’m still not sold that the entire regime (Dom and Schiano) doesn’t walk the plank together. I’m not sure how many times in the history of the NFL, a GM gets to keep the his job after 5 years and no playoff appearances.
Honestly, I would feel more comfortable with someone else at the GM helm to determine the QB position next year. Move Dom to a Vice President title, IMO.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:39 pm
I still think we need to address the O-Line first. Doesn’t matter if it is Johnny Boy, Freeman, or Glennon under center. So long as they are “protected” by this O-line they will running for their life, whoever they are.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:41 pm
However, if I were Dom I would be paying close attention to the situation going on in Chicago at QB.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:41 pm
Why is it if you show support for the rookie, were automatically annointing him as the franchise? Nobody i know of has said he’s the franchise. But its dam near impossible to judge him in his rookie season with garbage play calls, no weapons but V-Jax and a bad O-line.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Nobody we draft, including Jonny football, will do any better. With the same offense.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:42 pm
Who then? that’s my big question to you all…who is the QB you bring in? It sure as heck isn’t in this draft class. Which free agent QB would you target? Really easy to say ‘he isn’t’, but the real question is, ‘who is?’
December 15th, 2013 at 7:44 pm
I’m tired of “flashes”. Josh Freeman showed flashes. How did that work out? Flashes are deceptive, and can be very misleading. Some may see it as flashes of brilliant, but often times it is flashes of luck. I’m not saying it’s either, but I’m done with getting excited about flashes. Overall, he’s not been consistent except for maybe two games. That’s not good enough for me to go out and buy a Glennon jersey and name my child after him.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:45 pm
Last year was a bad year for QBs in the draft, so of course it was the genius of Gregory to take a guy who he recruited out of high school. Who can argue with that?
So now we’ll pass on drafting a better QB because Gregory likes to lose with his guys. Then everyone will get a trophy for participating!
December 15th, 2013 at 7:45 pm
@Tony,
This is considered the best QB class coming out in a while. Perhaps you don’t watch much college football, but that’s a pretty ridiculous statement. There’s probably 5 or 6 QB’s that are going to get first round grades, which is very very high.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:48 pm
@Hawaiian
Can any of them turn sh!t into gold? That will be a requirement if they are to do any better than Glennon.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:48 pm
@Hawaiian – Exactly, Freeman was Mr. Inconsistent, that kind of play is what cost him his job. These past few games Glennon has looked inconsistent as well. He needs to put a stop to it soon before his fate is the same as Freeman’s.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:50 pm
This “could” be a good draft class for QB’s. The only sure guy’s who are coming into the draft are AJ McCarron, Aaron Murray, and Zach Mettenberger. Mariota already decided to stay in college, and Bridgewater and Johnny Boy are undecided.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:51 pm
Freeman had 4+ years. Glennon has had 10 games? Stop comparing the two. There is no comparison. Glennon is a rookie.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:53 pm
We need to draft a good OL!!!!!!!!!
December 15th, 2013 at 7:55 pm
If you want to make a comparison then lets compare there rookie seasons. Wait, no we can’t do that because Glennon is blowing Freeman’s rookie season away by breaking ALL of his rookie franchise records.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:55 pm
You can put tom brady back there and they will still suck. The bucs offense is mediocre at best. Sullivan needs to go!!!
December 15th, 2013 at 7:55 pm
Couch Fan Says
“Nobody i know of has said he’s the franchise.”
Then you haven’t been reading these comment sections. A LOT of people have said he’ll be the franchise QB.
I have not been sold on Glennon from the start. Even Freeman showed “flashes”. I heard on the post game they suggested bringing in Josh McCown as a backup for him to learn from. Yeah, that’ll do it. Bring in a career backup who just happens to have a few good games and Glennon will play like a career backup.
Bringing in a veteran is a good idea, but it has to be someone who has had a level of success and anyone like that will want to start.
Frankly, I think Mark Sanchez as a backup would be a better idea than McCown. At least he made it into the playoffs.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:56 pm
I am 100% for drafting a QB in round 1 or 2.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:57 pm
Drafting a QB is a crap shoot and it’s absolutely impossible to grade Glennon when he has no weapons around him. Who do you think could do better when no one is open? When receivers were open he made the throw but he’s been told not to force the ball into tight spaces and with our receivers it’s always going to be a tight space. With no running game it’s hard to be successful in the passing game when all they have to do is take away V-Jax and Wright. He’s holding the ball too long because nobody is open. Add in the most generic play calling known to man and you have a recipe for losing. The most creative thing we did resulted in a fumble and TD for the 49’rs.
As for the defense…I have to give a lot of credit to Colin kaepernick because he was brilliant at extending plays and throwing on the run.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:57 pm
And the oline would perform fine if they were not always injured.
December 15th, 2013 at 7:59 pm
The problem is that Greggy & Glennon are doing just enough to stay employed yet not near enough to ever be close to elite. It’s almost the worst case scenario IMO. If Greggy & Glennon remain intact…next year is already a yawner.
December 15th, 2013 at 8:02 pm
Bobby, Glennon has weapons around him. A good QB makes players better around him. He has Jackson. He has Wright. He has Rainey. He has people that he can find success with IF he is good enough.
He just isn’t good enough. And if we operate on the assumption that he is good enough and he ends up sucking next year, then we will have passed by the opportunity to get a franchise QB in the draft.
I’d love to see you guys buying tickets if next year is as bad as this year…or worse, if they win 7 games and we don’t get an opportunity for a higher draft pick again.
December 15th, 2013 at 8:05 pm
At the very least, Jonny Football would be exciting to watch. This past decade has been subpar at best.
December 15th, 2013 at 8:06 pm
@Bonzai
I’m starting to have my doubts about Glennon as well but it’s way to early to give up on the kid. Everybody keeps mentioning Freeman, but Freeman had 60+ starts. Glennon has earned more time in my opinion. If this offense was stacked I would have no problem drafting a QB in the 1st. But its not. We have major needs that should be looked at in the 1st round. I have no problem with drafting a QB in the 2nd though.
After watching Penn get beat badly again today. I think we are looking at drafting a LT with our 1st pick. It makes the most sense. I would love Watkins but if we get a top 5, I think we must go LT.
December 15th, 2013 at 8:07 pm
Freeman gives the Bucs the best chance to win.
December 15th, 2013 at 8:08 pm
He has Jackson. He has Wright. He has Rainey. He has people that he can find success with IF he is good enough.
—————————–
You cant possibly belive this right? V-jax is the only weapon you named.
Wright has some nice games but he’s to inconsistent to be a legit weapon right now. There are lots of times he’s completely invisible during a game. Rainey was a nice pick up, but a legit weapon? No…. Underwood? Owusu? Dawson? This is what you think we can win with if we have a “good enough” qb?
December 15th, 2013 at 8:11 pm
The bottom line is that if we’re going to turn this around next year and make the playoffs it will be with Glennon at QB. Barring injury of course.
Schiano loves the guy. He’s not drafting a QB high in the draft.
He’s gonna make this thing work his way. That seems obvious.

“I’m starting to have my doubts about Glennon as well but it’s way to early to give up on the kid.”
I’m not saying give up on him. I’m saying we need to increase our odds by doubling our chances and draft a high round QB to compete.
December 15th, 2013 at 8:16 pm
I understand doubling our odds and all but the next guy will still have the same problem as Glennon, horrible play calling and lack of weapons and bad O-Line.
So what are the odds that guy does any better? Not very good. I’m all for getting a QB if it improves the team with a 1st round pick. I just dont see it until we fix some of the other problems first.
December 15th, 2013 at 8:25 pm
Glennon on the 2 hurry up drives: 13 of 15 for 145 yds and 2 TDs
Glennon the other 9 drives: 5 of 19 for 44 yds and an interception.
Change the scheme, get results.
Keep Glennon. He is a smart, young, hardworking QB who has the talent to be very good. I would hate to see the Bucs waste a draft pick on a QB when it could be spent on O-line or a receiver to help Glennon.
Newsflash: Penn sucks, Joseph is gone and who knows what’s up with Nicks? Vjax is over 30, Mike Will is no number 1 and the rest of the receiving corps. probably wouldn’t play on most of the teams in the league.
December 15th, 2013 at 8:27 pm
Freeman’s best receiver his rookie year was Maurice Stovall, Glennon has VJax and Tim Wright. Anyway, I’m not comparing them career wise, just saying the past 2 games Glennon has been inconsistent. One play is a rocket right on the money, the next is a badly incomplete pass. If he plays like he has the past 2 games during next season he will find himself out of a starting job like Freeman. The only thing that kept Freeman afloat for 4+ years was his fluke season in 2010.
December 15th, 2013 at 8:40 pm
WalkdaPlank,
Freeman may not have had weapons his rookie year, but he had more weapons in his FIFTH year than Glennon has right now(with the injuries to Douggie and Mike Williams) and Glennon is outperforming what Freeman was able to do.
The difference between the 2, or at least what i believe, is that Glennon has that fire and will-to-win and that he will put in the effort off of the field like guys like Manning and Brady
December 15th, 2013 at 8:46 pm
Do u guys not understand we need a left takle an Doug bak..
December 15th, 2013 at 8:49 pm
yes, we need weapons, including at qb! what changed during his 2 td drives was the defense.
derek carr.
December 15th, 2013 at 8:50 pm
I agree if he doesnt become more consistent he will be out of a Job. But it’s to be expected of any rookie to hit that wall that Joe is always talking about. Martin hit it, Barron hit it…. but no mention of it for Glennon? C’mon joe. At least be consistent Lol.
December 15th, 2013 at 9:05 pm
Why don’t we just Draft a QB in every round of every draft until we land a “franchise QB” then we can start building a team right Joe. I mean absolutely draft a QB no matter what. I’m sick of Glennon too I mean who would want a QB with 17 TDs to 8 ints. I mean he has one wide receiver that doesn’t create huge separation and after that, well the rest of the WR’s are practice squad guys. Look at the rest of his “loaded offense” a third string RB, an undrafted TE that I guess is on the cusp of being elite but was a college WR. ( maybe we should pick up some undrafted qbs too). Better yet pick up some free agent qbs too, Freeman will be on the market so sign him too. Maybe Cutler, he only threw two ints today and all he has as a supporting cast is Marshall, Jeffery, Bennett and Forte.. who could do anything with that lousy bunch.
Two TDs against the weak 49er’s. I mean Willis is past his time, their secondary sucks. We had at least 35 yards on the ground today.. what should we expect 50?
I’m about sworn off this site again.
December 15th, 2013 at 9:06 pm
whar wall? glennon did not play the whole year. the “wall” is usually conditioning because college fb is only 12 games and some rookies are not used to 4+ games more.
December 15th, 2013 at 9:08 pm
I’m not worrie about a QB this year. If Glennon isn’t the answer after next year then guess what. Jamie’s Winston will be waiting as will teddy bridgewater. Gettin oline or wr help is fine this year. Let Glennon have another season the. See what happens.
December 15th, 2013 at 9:13 pm
For those who are saying Freeman had no weapons, what happened to the highest paid TE in the league back then, K Winslow.
And don’t forget “that Freeman is only 24 years old”
December 15th, 2013 at 9:15 pm
Oh so the wall only counts if you start from day 1? I see. Good to know you can pick and choose when and where someone fits your description of the “wall”. He started game 4. the wall is also a mental barrier not just physical.
December 15th, 2013 at 9:29 pm
Before we draft a QB we should rebuild the o line get another CB Leonard Johnson is not the answer get a true number 3 WO who can stretch the field and draft another TE. I don’t care which one of the over rated QB is available when the bucs draft trade the pick and draft quality forget trying to find a diamond in a dark cave draft quality that is how you build a team.
December 15th, 2013 at 9:34 pm
seriously, do the math. it was the 14 game today. he strted the 4th. so he’s only good for 10-11games.ok.
December 15th, 2013 at 9:35 pm
He stinks he does not have that IT factor. You see it on third downs when he can it makes plays and just throw it away. I understand the bucs are trying to limit turnovers but come on!! Your qb has to make plays sometimes and I haven’t seen him make plays.
December 15th, 2013 at 9:40 pm
This TEAM is PRACTICALLY screaming to us fans. HEY WE NEED A LEFT TACKLE.
Then along comes someone saying op d dope d the Bucs need to draft a QB.
The writing is on the wall people o line , d line , QB and then a WR.
@Joe repeat after me. Donald Penn sucks now. Donald Penn sucks now.
December 15th, 2013 at 10:01 pm
You people really think freeman was worse than glennon is? Freeman led the 10th best offense in the league last season, while glennon is leading the 30th best offense in the league, in the same offense. Freeman was inconsistent but when he was on he was great. Glennon has shown flashes like freeman did but if you hate freeman why do love glennon when he hasn’t shown to be better than freeman in any way shape or form. Freeman was barely given a chance. Glennon is schianos home boy, freeman was never gonna be here. And that’s fine, freeman was not the future we needed and it was good he left. But glennon is not the answer he is no better than freeman. If freeman wasn’t the franchise then neither is glennon. Glennon makes terrible reads (if he’s making any at all) and he can’t handle pocket pressure at all. I’ve never seen a bucs qb take more sacks than glennon does.
December 15th, 2013 at 10:05 pm
Why? No quarterback named “McCown” can lead you to the promised land and why would anyone want bratty Jay Cutler when his own team doesn’t want him, players and management?
December 15th, 2013 at 10:12 pm
Draft a qb but mostly draft some coaches play calling is awful too many 3and outs you could see it coming and its never the coaches fault this is the glazers fault but maybe its my wifes fault or maybe its my fault or my dogs fault
December 15th, 2013 at 10:15 pm
Glennon isnt good. Even average at best QBs can throw for 300+ yards every so often and so far Glennon hasnt even hinted at that being a possibility.
11 drives today. 2 drives went for 172 yards and the other 9 drives went for about 27.
If I was the Glazers, I would sit Schiano down and ask if he wants Glennon as his starter for 2014. If he says yes then fire him ASAP because if Glennon starts then this team will lose double digits again and Schiano will be gone anyways.
December 15th, 2013 at 10:20 pm
Glennon is not a quality back up at this point and coaching handed this game away ive tried to like this coach because I want this team to be a playoff team but its not going to happen with this coach
December 15th, 2013 at 10:28 pm
It’s easy to see an open receiver (what very few times they got open) from your couch or seat at the bar. I wounder what it looked like at the time from Glennons’ vantage point? Wait. Our local experts already know.
He ran 2 long drives. None of the posters BS”oh he was given the position by the defense”. I remember a Panther defense this good he put up NO TDs on. You want good “stats”? Ask coach why he quit the hurry up. He will tell you if it works don’t use it.
December 15th, 2013 at 10:32 pm
this team would of been better off with free and your not in your right mind if you think other wise Glennon wont win any games just managing our defense isn’t there yet and when you need him to step up he cannot with this type of play calling there is no winning here , This is the head coaches offensive and he calls the shots and you will hear this at the end of the season when sully gets the ax and the blame It Is going to be long season next year as well
December 15th, 2013 at 11:29 pm
On his worst day I would take Glennon over Freeman. All you have to do is look at Freeman and where he is now to realize that Freeman ruined himself. He’s a party boy and he had no real commitment to the team. Glennon is working to become a franchise QB. He’s not their yet but what rookie QB before Russell Wilson, Andrew Luck and company ever was? You’re revising history if you think all of the great QB’s showed their ceiling the first year they played. Most of them showed their ass. Say what you will about Glennon, he has impressed me when the O-line does their job. He’s made some really good throws. The TD’s to V=Jax and Wright were big league throws. He’ll probably throw for over 20 TD’s his rookie year. I think he shows promise. I believe the problem is more coaching than anything. Play calling just flat out sucks.
December 15th, 2013 at 11:31 pm
@chickster
Why would you come and utter the name Freeman and better in the same sentence?
Guys – does it matter when we have no scheme, plan of attack, concept, or identity on offense? Is Glennon the future, doesn’t look like it, and yes Penn best days are passed, but with the offensive staff we have how can any QB succeed?
Trash. Losing brand of football!
December 16th, 2013 at 2:11 am
All you have to do is look at Freeman and where he is now to realize that Freeman ruined himself. He’s a party boy and he had no real commitment to the team.
Bobby, what do you mean he’s a party boy? No real commitment to the team?
Do you have any proof of this? Re: commitment, if I remember correctly he was the one that organized the OTAs a few years back, and he lost a huge amount of weight.
He was also mentioned in the media as hard working, and the rest of the clichés about how hard all these QBs work in order to master their craft.
In addition, I don’t blame the OLine for everything. Try counting how long he holds the ball.
Anyway, I will wait for your proof.
December 16th, 2013 at 3:13 am
When I played basketball, I was the hardest worker on the team by a mile. While my teammates were partying – living the college life – I was working on my game. But guess what, they played and I didn’t. You wanna know why? Because they were more talented than me, and it wasn’t even close. I’m afraid that’s the same situation we are in with Mike Glennon. Hard work and determination are great, but nothing beats good old fashioned God-given talent.
December 16th, 2013 at 8:59 am
The “fourth best quarterback” argument doesn’t hold water.
There is nobody in this draft, or any draft in probably the last 5 years who is/will be better than Brees/Ryan/Newton. How can you argue that any kid we draft will be better than those guys?
