Watson Down On His “Alligator Arms”
December 13th, 2013In a Buffalo beat down that featured a thoroughly dominant Bucs defense, a blown blocked punt by Dekoda Watson on the Bills’ first possession was barely an afterthought.
But rest assured it drew plenty of attention from the punt-block obsessed New Schiano Order.
It cost the Bucs a turnover (on downs) and gave the Bills a first down on the personal foul of roughing the kicker. Watson broke free up the middle and it seemed darn near impossible that he’d miss the block. But he did and mauled the punter.
Watson told Joe it was a bad dream come true.
“It’s one of those things that you gotta go for, of course, but at the same time what I did is not exactly what you practice,” Watson said. “You know how to come in there with your hands, making the diamond [shape]. There’ s a certain way you’ve got to extend your hands and your arms, and time it up just right. I didn’t do it like I was supposed to. I came in there with alligator arms, didn’t get a full extension and it went right between my hands.
“Those are things I have nightmares about and it actually happened.”
Props to Watson for his candor. And it’s got to hurt a little extra for Watson, knowing he’ll be an unrestricted free agent after the season and should be in high demand as a special teams ace who can rush the passer a little and is still young. Yet another punt block for Watson is the kind of thing that could score him some extra cash.
And Joe must also note that the Bucs’ ability to get free on punt blocks is the best in the NFL, for sure. It’s amazing, considering opponents are surely preparing. Yet last Sunday, the Bucs got through on their first attempt.
The Bucs likely will need some special teams heroics to go toe-to-toe with the 49ers this weekend.

Didn’t Watson inexplicably whiff on a punt block at Dallas last year? Or was that a different Schiano Man?

Do I have a sense of deja vu suddenly??

Watson needs to be re-signed.

Agreed. i think He has been our best 7th rounder so far in the franchise. Give him an extension, he’s very versatile & even if we land Barr, Mack, or anyone else with our first, i think Dekota has earned himself a new deal. Not Quincy Black money, but something very decent. I do fear that if he lands somewhere else in free agency, he would be very deadly off the edge for a 3-4 defense.
