Bucs Plummet To Ninth Overall Pick In 2014

December 8th, 2013

dominikWinning is wonderful, but it does have its price.

Based on the results of today’s NFL slate and Joe’s tiebreaker calculations, the Bucs’ victory moved their current 2014 draft position down to the ninth overall pick.

The Bucs’ (4-9) tough strength of schedule, including upcoming games, costs them tiebreakers against other 4-9 teams: Cleveland, Buffalo, Jacksonville and Oakland. That group is ahead of Houston (two wins), and Atlanta, Minnesota and Washington (three wins.)

With another win, the Bucs surely lose any shot at a top-5 pick.

Some of the best players in today’s NFL were drafted in that area. Quality players will still be there.

Oh well Joe…oh well. Keep winning Bucs…keep winning.

  3. Mr. Patrick Says:

Don’t worry, by the end of the season they will be back in the top 5

  4. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I hope we win out and drop out of the top 10. Wins are more important than draft slot. Period.

  5. RastaMon Says:

WTF…..now we have to trade up in the draft….fire /cut/everybody…

  6. JonBuc Says:

A decent chance against the Rams…not so much against SF and @ NO. Might be just enough to give Schiano a mulligan…probably no top qb or Clowney, however. Meh…..

  7. Bucfan#37 Says:

We really have a mostly solid team with only a tweaking needed to improve lacking parts of the team. Drafting anywhere in the top half of the teams picking will fill those spots sufficiently.

  8. jared Says:

Rather them continue to win and build that chemistry than worry about a stupid draft position. One player never fixes a team. I like seeing the def finally come together when they’re all healthy. We’ll still get a valuable player at whatever spot we pick.

  9. Rob Says:

With New Orleans, a road trip to St. Louis, and San Fransisco left on the schedule, there will be plenty of time to move back up into the top 5.

  10. Jerry Says:

I doubt we get close to the top 5.

Lots of teams in front of us really, REALLY suck.

  11. Andrew 1 Says:

our strength of schedule is going to really end up screwing us.

    Mike Evans…….chips fall where ever…..

I’m all about winning for pride and the integrity of the game, but it begs consideration that we look at the other side of the argument. Everyone that says we have minor tweaks needed to be a super bowl contending team (as I’m assuming no one simply expect middle of the pack) may be right; but they also need to realize those necessary changes are at important positions. But that seems to be the problem with this franchise, and possibly the fan base. Since winning the super bowl, it’s safe to say that the best realistic outcome each year has been to make it to the playoffs. Unable to stack up against the better, championship caliber teams, we’ve become complacent, happy comparing ourselves to the likes of perennial “outside-looking-in teams” – (see the Lions, Bengals, Cowboys, and Dolphins).

It’s safe to say that ideology has become frustrating, possibly explaining why the stadium struggles to sell out. These past 2 years have been important for the future of this franchise in addition to this upcoming offseason, where we have no financial commitment to any quarterback. In order to be compared with the Pats, Broncos, Seahawks, and 49ers, we have to have the integral things in place.
The QB: I’m not saying the verdict is out on the kid, but can he really take us to a super bowl? And if you say “well, i think maybe”, then the answer is no. A strong defense won’t win the big game now a days, it’s 75% offense/QB. This upcoming draft has a lot of talent that can change a franchise, can we afford wins for pride? Ask Carolina or Atlanta what can change in a draft.

The coach: Is he the guy? People’s opinion’s change based upon a win or loss leading into the week, so I have to be careful to what I say… I feel the same can be said for the coach as can be said for the GM. Are they really winners? Dom especially, he’s been running things for a while and all everyone continues to cite are one of many different excuses as to his W-Ls. Schiano… lost 8 straight games and is picking up a couple against some teams that are down. Are we seriously grading what we plan to be the future of our franchise on those standards? Is that really the best we can get.

Again Tampa, this is an important year. The nation already sees this franchise as a push-over. Is this going to end or are we going keep expecting mediocrity?

    Keep on Winning!!!!

  16. RustyRhinos Says:

Mike10 Which potential 2013 nfl draft QB’s do you want to see running this 75% type offense?

As for the coach losing 8 games.

First game played was lost by 1 point
    Second game by 2 points
    Third game 20 points
    Fourth game 3 points
    Fifth game 11 points
    Sixth game 8 points
    Seventh game 18 points
    Eight Game 1 point
Ninth game we win by 3
Tenth game we win By 13
Eleventh game we win by 3
Twelfth game we lose by 21
Thirteenth Game we win by 21

I am looking at the “record” of this season and I think we are not getting Beat down and Blown out by teams. We Play Hard in O/D/ST every game, and “if ” the ball went one way instead of the other we could be 8-6. Are we there yet? no. But we are staying around games until we learn to win outright. Like we won today.
Keep going forward, lets not play coaching /1st rd QB ring around the rossie..
    just my opinion

  17. simeon_97 Says:

this season was possibly the worst possible scenario to be a fan: Lose 8 games straight, after the first month the season was over, after waiting all year for this team to get on the field. Now we win a bunch of meaningless games, mostly against crappy teams, and lose draft position and people think we have something in this sh1t coach and we are a team on the verge of being a playoff team? I wish i had all the time back i spent watching this team this season and my $300 for sunday ticket.

Winning culture > high draft picks. Ask the teams who always win and pick low. I’d rather be on elf those teams.

  19. Schiano Happens Says:

Best auto correct ever right there.

  20. Mike10 Says:

RustyRhinos – appreciate u reading my post n responding.

For the record, I didn’t say that person had to be a QB in this draft. The last thing I want to see us do is reach for a signal caller that isn’t a guy that can make us championship contenders. Grabbing a keystone linebacker, slot receiver, DE, or OT could be very beneficial for the future and maybe our QB is next year’s draft. I’m speaking more to those that are sold on Glennon and Schiano making up our future, being 2 of the most important positions to a team. But if we can get a McCarron in the 2nd round and have a competition at QB, I think we’d get the best out of either one…. we just can’t get complacent and say Glennon is the guy for the future, we’ll set ourselves back another 5 yrs.

I hear what your saying with the schedule, but it’s no different than the past decade. We’re competitive against teams that we should beat/those that championship level teams beat, and get outclassed by those teams we need to start comparing ourselves to… those teams that I’m not sure our core (Glennon, Schiano, and even the GM) can get us to. When u put our opponents next to each of those games, I believe you learn the true story.

We lost to the Jets by 1, we should have killed them.
We lost to the Saints bc we were out coached. We outplayed them for 3 quarters, and lost in the 4th. That’s the difference btw Payton and Schiano.
L to the Pats, by a lot… for the reasons previously described.
Cards + Eagles should have at least been a split, if not competitively played in each.
We lost by 8 to a Falcons team that has won 2 games and were not competitive against a division rival in the Panthers.
The Seahawks = a team that got out coached in the second half bc we can’t make adjustments. You do not lose a game when you’re up by 21 and only follow it up by 2 field goals!
The beat up dolphins and Falcons are two games that should have been won, but again, are we going to be happy with a W against Miami.
The Lions game was won on 5 turnovers that we had every right to lose especially having missed 2 4th Q field goals, but I’ll give that one to the team as a hard fought road game.
We got run over for a season sweep by the Panthers, again, a division rival that is cleary leaps and bounds better than us.
And we beat a Bills team at home that doesn’t have a QB – and again, I’m not going to pound my chest w a victory at home against the Bills.

Each game (to me) tells a story that has represented this franchise for a long time now as “barely good enough.” Do you honestly think this team is going to turn the corner any time soon w its core deficiencies?

  21. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    What a total crock.

The Bucs have been stuck in mediocrity for so long you people think it is alright.

Why did the previous era end? Because of the draft picks we gave up for Gruden and MeShawn.

How does a bad team get better? With high draft picks. Take a good look at our division. Brees is elite. Ryan is well on his way to elite. Newton is on hos way to elite. Glennon? No better than a good backup.

Don’t tell me we don’t need a high pick for a QB. And don’t tell me a “decent” QB will get the job done. Not in this division.

Defense will not get the job done either. We are #1 in interceptions and we are still bombing.

We MUST get an elite QB. And since none are on the market we have to do it thru the draft.

Otherwise we will not even make the playoffs for another 10 years…because we will be the only team in the division without am elite QB.

Get real people. The Bucs are on the edge of a cliff.

  22. Brewmaster Says:

I cant believe there are fans that advocate tanking games for draft position.
I for one don’t want players giving half-assed effort and Coaches that would allow that to happen. Thankfully we have neither. YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME’! HELLO!!

  23. Captain Stagger Says:

    @Bonzai

#1 who is that elite QB in this draft?
#2 what makes you think you need a top 5 pick to land one?

Do a little homework, drafting top 5 does not equal elite QB. Go ahead and make a lust of the top 10 QB’s and look up their draft position.

  24. NY Buc Says:

    @ Schiano Happens Says

Couldn’t agree with you more. When was the last time the Patriots have been anywhere near drafting in the top 10 let alone top 5, and they are in or at least competing for the playoffs just about every season that Belichick has been there. Coaches/GM’s with an eye for talent can still find it no matter where they are picking in the draft.
