It’s Wait ‘Til Next Year For Revis’ Knee

December 7th, 2013

The mythical 100 percent has become a 2013 fairy tale

Bucs fans won’t see every last inch of talent this season within the most expensive player in Bucs history.

Darrelle Revis is now resigned to the fact his surgically-repaired knee won’t get back to where he wants it until 2014.

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network on WDAE-AM 620 Thursday, Revis talked about his frustration.

“It’s doing fine. It’s getting stronger. I’m not there. I’m just not there yet, which is kind of frustrating for me sometimes because of the type of player and competitor I am,” Revis said. “But I know in due time it will be 100 percent and I’ll be ready to really rock and roll and get things right. It’s still not no excuse; I’m out there playing. You know I’m trying to help this team win as best I can. But at the same time, I’ll worry about that, I’ll worry about my knee later on. I’m here for the team and here to finish out this year strong.”

Revis was one of the Bucs’ big health gambles of 2013, one of four impact players returning from surgery, including Adrian Clayborn, Davin Joseph and Carl Nicks.

Did the Bucs get a good deal with Revis? So far, so good. Revis has been extremely good and durable, though not his usual All-World self. With teams game-planning away from him, he’s changed the entire defense for the better. And his presence has brought a lot more work Johnthan Banks’ way, making him a better player, in addition to the steady tutelage to Banks that Revis provides.

Joe’s heard same fans speculate about the chances the Bucs trade Revis and his $16-million-per-year contract in the offseason to free up cash and recoup a draft pick. Joe sure that’s never going to happen.

Even if Greg Schiano was replaced, what new head coach in his right mind wouldn’t want a healthy, still-young Revis on his team? Unless the Bucs chase an expensive veteran quarterback this offseason, such as bratty Jay Cutler, they’ll have plenty of salary cap room to pay Revis and all the talent they need to win in 2014.

I think we should still draft another corner just in case next year. Jimmy graham is available and the saints cannot sign him as they are projected 10m over the cap.

I say draft clowney and a CB and then sign jimmy graham and move Tim wright to the slot.

Then with the 2 nd pick get a good backup QB maybe manziel if he is around which I think he will be.

That should fill all our holes. And then draft some good backups from 3rd round onwards to build for the future – maybe a guard, centre and WR

There’s no way the Saints let JGrizz walk. That is a pipedream. They will MAKE room for a stud like that.

It is what is. I’m sorry I just don’t see, how we are getting any value out the deal. We pay this dude A MILLION BUC’s a game..

Whats the use of paying ONE guy that much a money. When most playoff caliber QB’s spread the ball around. I just don’t see the ROI on this Joe

….You don’t build your house on sand!

  4. Harry Says:

Not sure how sand = Revis? Personally, I think how Revis can take away half of the field makes it, or will make it very difficult for other teams.

Of the four, Revis has provided the best return, Joseph is coming around, Clayborn not so much, Nicks I don’t see him back next year (depending on how much of his contract is “guaranteed”).

  5. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Harry

No one can take away on half of the field in spread sets. You can’t be in 5 places at once. And the reference to Revis and sand is this. You betting the farm, that knee holds up.

  6. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Harry

Just my thoughts. With so many holes that money can allocated else where.

  7. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I don’t know what all you guys are worried about, He only turns 29 this summer. He should give the Bucs 2 good years, and then the Bucs will move on.

  8. patrickbucs Says:

2 good years? he can’t play past 31? cmon man

  9. The_Buc_Realist Says:

He will play, but not for 16 million a year, That is why and when the Bucs will walk away. 2015 will be Revis’s last year with the Bucs. Write it down!

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    2 good years @32 Million?

  11. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I say keep him through next year, draft a good CB in this draft and let him train as a backup. Then cut Revis for 2015. We’ll have a replacement already in place. Meanwhie, if Glennon turns out to be any good (which I doubt) he’ll be due a new contract at that point.

    2013 NFL Top Average Salaries.

    PASSING YARDS?
    RUSHING YARDS?
    KICK RETURN YARDS?
    PUNT RETURN YARDS?

    HOW ABOUT

    TACKLES
    SACKS
    INTERCEPTIONS
    FORCED FUMBLES/ RECOVER

When I last checked-Seattle, Houston, San Francisco, New Orleans, Cleveland, Carolina, Tennessee, Cincinnati, Miami, and New England. Are in the Top Ten in pass defense. With half of those teams leading the league in Sacks. Hmm, wonder if there’s any correlation to pressure on the QB and pass defense. What A novel Idea

  13. PRBucFan Says:

Barring a reinjury Revis will be here for a while.

We didn’t trade for him to keep him for 2 seasons.

He has payed off well so far and he’s not even all back.

Your crazy if you think when they made the trade they weren’t accounting for the fact that he would possibly need a season and following offseason to completely come back from the injury.

  14. PRBucFan Says:

    All that being said

Lamarcus Joyner would look amazing in Pewter and Red. 😀

    Next year

  15. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Paying a CB a million a game, in today’s uptempo- spread offense- happy NFL.

Is like wearing Jordans, and you still living in the PJ’s. Driving a $60,000 SUV while, neither one of your kids have Coverdell plan. Either way your losing. Last I check we’re 3-9; nuff said.

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Joyner got a nice game. So does that kid out of Michigan St. CB Darqueze Dennard

  17. PRBucFan Says:

    Regardless of our current record

How much we think he should earn is irrelevant at this point

Whether he should or shouldn’t be payed the money matters not since they’ve already made that decision and moved past that stage by offering him the deal.

Something tells me if years down the road when his play no longer matches his contract he’ll restructure. IMO I feel like Revis is ready to stay for the long run.

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

With all the holes we have. I don’t see how its justifiable. We can agree to disagree. Now how about Dem Noles?

  19. MadMax Says:

Well, we’re here, and its a gamble we played on……so draft CB Darqueze Dennard….we could probably trade down and still land him….keep Revis for one more year, he teaches our Banks and Dennard and we’ll see how it goes…..

I mean wth since we’re probably keeping the same staff anyway?
