“With The Fifth Pick, The Bucs Select …”

December 7th, 2013

Mock draft season begins

All around good guy and NFL analyst Peter Schrager — you may be familiar with his work on “Inside the NFL,” his columns and draft research for FoxSports.com or his regular Sunday night hits on FOX News Network — decided, what the hell, let’s give NFL fans what they want.

Therefore, Schrager decided to post his first mock draft for 2014, yup, some five months away.

Like some Bucs fans who clamor for Johnny Football or Teddy Bridgewater, Schrager too feels the Bucs will go for an offensive skill position player. But not quarterback.

No, Schrager sees the Bucs going for Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

*—Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson

Is Mike Glennon the guy at quarterback? I think so. Of course, a lot can change with four weeks left in the season. Anthony Barr could be the guy here, but Watkins and Vincent Jackson could form one of the top receiving duos in the NFL. Watkins has all the tools to be an NFL great.

Now Joe sort of likes the way Schrager is thinking here. The Bucs are not going to draft a corner; not going to draft a linebacker and something tells Joe the Bucs would try to trade/sign a free agent defensive end before they would go after someone in the draft (Jadeveon Clowney) because Bucs commander Greg Schiano will be under a win-now-or-else edict from Team Glazer.

If Glennon is truly the guy at quarterback, then drafting someone like Watkins could give the Bucs a lethal passing attack along with Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams, since Bucs offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan is not a tight end kinda guy.

Joe is still leaning toward Jake Matthews at offensive tackle, and praying that Johnny Football slips so the Bucs can trade back up into the first round and grab the pride of Texas.

Ah, but a lot will happen between now and May.

Am i the only person that thinks Benjamin at fsu would be a great fit? granted, I don’t watch a lot of college football but that guy crushes it in every game I’ve seen him play

  2. Buc1987 Says:

@Patrick…yeah lol I saw 2 guys in here yesterday that mentioned just about every WR in college FB accept for Benjamin.

  3. Tony Says:

Said it before, will say it again…WEAK QB class that gets weaker as ever underclassmen stays. Roll with Glennon, put it to bed and build a better team. I too like Mathews or Watkins, but we could definitely use some pass rush help. I’m not saying Glennon is the next Manning, just that he is good enough to win with and I don’t see anyone that is going to be a huge upgrade (if upgrade at all) coming out. Anyone been watching Teddy the past few weeks? Give me a break. Johnny? Give that guy a contract and see where his priorities go, which are already in question. Now, draft a mid round guy if say a Bortles slips there then I’m all for it. And no, Murray will not be any good nor will Mecklenberger. I do like Carr’s potential out of Fresno State though.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A 4th or 5th pick is very tradable…and we have lots of needs….We might still pick up Watkins or Ebron later in the first.

  5. BucsQcCity Says:

I have no problem with that pick.. Defense is overrated in today nfl

  6. Patrick in VA Says:

@1987 – he may not be as good as others in college right now. Like I said, I don’t watch college football and only watched some fsu games because Winston is getting WWII much hype. Thought Benjamin looked great but if there are better options then go for it. I just wasn’t the best players we can get

  7. Josh P Says:

I am a huge Benjamin fan and would love to see him in Pewter but i believe he still has one more year of elgibility left since he wasn’t red-shirted.

  8. Bucfan#37 Says:

I think draft offense first so that side will be less offensive, draft defense second so that side will be more defensive.

  9. Marlow Says:

Our GM was at Clemson/Carolina game the night prior to playing the panthers.

  10. 1neb Says:

Big $ has all the potential to be a star in the NFL. But Benjamin is not ready .I watch every FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES ( GO NOLES)game and the biggest reason is he is a sophomore . but his biggest issue on the field is him staying focused that is why he drops so many balls every game .

  11. BB Says:

    Johnny football sucks

  12. Mike of Dade City Says:

How many times as a Buc fan have we watched our team churn out rookies on the offense side of the ball who all move on to have a flop of a career? Here are some names Clayton, King, Williams, Anthony, Green, etc. They all had great rookie seasons and either flopped or were injury prone. Draft Johnny or get a veteran at qb in free agency save us some heart ache

  13. deminion Says:

that who i would draft if i was the bucs we have needed a burner for so long and watkins has the size and spd to be great 6’1 with 4.39 spd and great hands cn play inside and out side draft em

  14. Rob Says:

Clowney or bust. Trade up if you have to. That guy will elevate the entire D-line, and God help us all of Altlanta drafts him a spot or two ahead of the Bucs.

  15. Erick Says:

Im pretty sure Joe is the only one clamoring for the pride of Texas. Im down for Watkins. That would give glennon plenty of toys. The next 4 picks would have to be Defensive ends and O-linemen though.

  16. deminion Says:

im with Erick draft watkins then go all in on Dline and Oline lol

  17. Brewmaster Says:

If Shiano stays there is no way he drafts Manzel. His M.O. is he likes tall QBs so put it to rest. I think drafting a stud LB to go with David. Then we need a DC with a clue.
Who said defense is overrated? Tell that to Green Bay and New England.

  18. Tomcin Says:

    Matthews or trade down.

  19. ClassieFreddieBlassie Says:

The Bucs passing on Clowney, if he were still on the board come selection time, would be the drunkest thing this front office could do. Clowney would only make Clayborn and GMC better players, and therefore the whole defence is better. But one thing I can say if this were to happen, it would probably mean Schiano is back for half of 2014, we will know what Glennon actually brings to the table and we would have a legitimate shot at Winston in the 2015 draft. Yes Joe, the Glazers would fire Schiano halfway through 2014 when he starts the season 1 and 6.

  20. Jordan Says:

Sign Jared Allen in Free Agency and I would be fine with going after a WR with our first round pick.

  21. Walter Says:

Sign Jared Allen in FA, draft Watkins in the first, Seferian-Jenkins in the second. That will give us our pass rushing DE, blocking AND receiving TE, and a play making WR to pair with Jackson and Williams, with Wright as our 2nd TE.

  22. Couch Fan Says:

Love Watkins. Been on his wagon for a long time now. Also Love Clowney but I’m worried about the rumors about his work ethic and motivation. If that is true, I just dont see how you spend a high draft pick on a guy with those type of issues.

  23. flmike...hates Johnny Football Says:

Here’s my issue with Johnny Football, he is what he is, and I’m not talking about on field, he is an entitled little punk who comes from money, so you’re not going to empress him with that, his personality is based on this fact, all his off field and off season antics are those of someone who has a feeling of entitlement. In a prior life my family was in the music industry from record promotion to concert promotion, I have met and am still friends with the kids of rock stars, now I’m in the sports industry and have had a chance to meet some of these guys kids, it’s the same attitude, very rarely did I or do I run across a kid who was the sme drive and ambition as their parent who made it, usually they are whinny little bastards who cry if they don’t get their way and have no real concept that with bad behavior comes consequences based on bad behavior so when they do screw up there is no consequence because there never has been any, that is what I fear about Manzeil, I don’t think he has ever faced any consequence when he has exhibited bad behavior, at least not publicly, I want to see what happens when he’s publicly embarrassed, how will he react, like Ryan Leaf or an adult, that’s my biggest question about him. If I were the GM of any team considering him, he would have to empress the $h1t out of me in the interview and workout process, I know what he can do on the College Football field, which in reality I’m not that empresses by, but in order for me to allow him on my NFL Field, he’d have to prove he’s an adult and will not revert to being a whinny little bastard or wilt under the criticism or adversity.

  24. David Says:

Ok, first of, josh p, Benjamin did redshirt. He is a redshirt sophomore. And and 1neb, what season are u watching? Benjamin has been much better this season and has not dropped passes as much, and the ones he has, u try being focused when up by 50 points in the 2nd quarter. But in all, I think Benjamin is a younger Vincent Jackson w/o the professionalism and what we need is a game breaker like Watkins. That size speed combo is too much to ignore.

  25. Joe Says:

Sign Jared Allen in Free Agency

Isn’t the tank about dry on him?

  26. BFFL Says:

I’m drafting DE with every pick. Can’t afford to have no pass rush again.

  27. Rob Says:

Jared Allen will be 32 when the season starts and will command a fortune.

It’d be a big mistake to invest a ton of money in him given that the Bucs aren’t exactly competing for the Super Bowl next year.

  28. BigSombrero Says:

Duo’s? With Mike Williams in the mix as well we would have an extremely good receiver corps. Maybe Wright will develop as well.

  29. RastaMon Says:

    Mike Evans….WR Texas A&M

  30. flmike...hates Johnny Football Says:

90% of the talent is in place, IMHO, the Bucs needs are DE, WR, LB, OT, TE.
I really like Wright as a pass catching TE, but he can’t block for his life, I would love for the Bucs to have Graham type TE, just an uncoverable monster. Watkins is a talent, you could go 3 or 4 wide and really create matchup issues all over the place.

  31. 1976Buc Says:

Johnny Football does not strike me as a “Buccaneer Man”.

  32. Mr. T Says:

Agreed, we can put the Johnny Football talk to rest. If the Bucs were to draft any QB he would be the least likely, definitely does not fit the Schiano mold of a Buccaneer man assuming Schiano is still here. A Watkins or Matthews pick would be fine with me.

  33. dee Says:

Watkins this guy is a beast think about it martin mike will vjax wow.

  34. gotbbucs Says:

    “Mike Evans….WR Texas A&M”

  35. Que589 Says:

    Go Watkins…

  36. BucsFanGreg Says:

Barr or Clowney in the first, and then Jimmy Garroppolo in the later rounds

  37. PRBucFan Says:

I think Kelvin Benjamin will make his way up the draft boards

  38. Burg Says:

If the Bucs are given the chance to draft Bortles they need to pull the trigger,

    Bortles>>>Glennon
