With The Fourth Pick In The NFL Draft …

December 6th, 2013

The mighty Jaguars won their fourth straight game last night, taking care of miserable Houston at home on Thursday Night Football.

That pushed Jacksonville (4-9) behind the Bucs in the quest for the top pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Factoring tiebreakers, the Bucs are sitting with the fourth overall pick with four games to play. Houston (2-9), losers of 11 straight, seems like a stone cold lock for the No. 1 overall pick, but all bets are off after that.

Sunday’s Bucs (3-9) versus Buffalo (4-8) game now comes under a bigger draft spotlight. Regardless of the outcome, the Bucs’ draft position should change significantly by Sunday evening. Strength of schedule hurts the Bucs when it comes to draft slot tiebreakers; Tampa Bay has played one of the toughest schedules in the NFL.

    Not taking the bait.

  2. mvermulm Says:

The chick in the picture is almost as big as Manziel. Please no, Bucs. He can hardly throw an out-route in college, takes far too many risks, and will most likely being an injury risk on every play. Pick another hole-filled position, draft a QB in the mid-rounds to compete with Glennon, and give it a year.

  3. joseph mamma Says:

They need to trade down and get a hard hitting safety.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

McCarron’s girlfriend is hotter! And, we can get him with our extra pick in round 2. Because, we will & should trade down…we can still pick up a great player in round one….like a WR/TE/OL/DE…..

  5. RCH Says:

I could careless what our draft position is right now. I would rather win games and end the season with some momentum. I’m sick of losing and the only way it’s going to change is by winning and showing were going in the right direction.

  6. MikeJ Says:

If there is a player (Derek Carr) you have rated as a franchise quarterback, you have to take him. Otherwise, a guy like Anthony Barr or (by rep only) Khalil Mack would fill a major need. & I would love me some Odell Beckham top of rd. 2.
    Tasty bait.

  7. d-money Says:

Not that it matters but the Jags haven’t won 4 straight they’ve won 4 of the last 5.

  8. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

“They need to trade down and get a hard hitting safety.”

Correct. Every team needs 3 strong safetys. Is that you, Mark?

  9. deminionsmall Says:

so im all in for gettin sammy watkins now

  10. Tim Says:

All these QBs in this draft there is no point in drafting a Johny Football type guy in the 1st round. Odds are of the 8 or so QBs that come out of this draft 5 will be busts, 2 will solid players and 1 will be a stud. I much rather gamble with that in with my 2nd round pick than my 1st.

This draft is loaded with pass rushers, TE’s, LBs and O linemen. All these positions are easier to evaluate and thus lowers your bust risk. It just so happens we have gaping holes at all these positions, we need a true SAM linebacker, we need a pass rusher to compliment GMC, and we need a down the middle threat at the TE spot. That would allow Tim Wright to move to slot and give a really nice receiving corps.

  11. Rob Says:

Might as well see if we can get Ryan Leaf out of prison. The Bucs would have a better chance of winning games that way than with Johnny Knucklehead.

  12. Eric Says:

Jags and Bucs are two of the hottest teams in the league.

    Amazing.

  13. Mike Williams (superfan) Says:

hopefully we lose out. If we get ahold of Jadeveon Clowney, we will be in the playoffs. Pash rush + Revis = #1 defense in the league. 1st rd Jadeveon Clowney/Anthony Barr. 2nd rd (trade up) Michael Sam /(no trade up)Christian Jones. If Anthony Barr is selected then 2nd rd Zach Mettenburg (Also trade up). We could also look at the T.E. from North Carolina (probably not available late 1st) or the T.E. from Washington ( shoild be there late 1st). I promise you if we lose out and get Clowney all the Bucs fans that said that was a bad idea will have changed their minds! JOE! JOHNNY FOOTBALL IS NOT A 1ST ROUND PICK! He is a horrible fit for our offence. He is way undersized, doesnt have good arm strength and if you think we had a circus this year then just wait until he is under center! NO THANKS!

    SINCERLY,
MIKE WILLIAMS (SUPERFAN FROM TRAINING CAMP)

  14. deminion Says:

im all in on sammy watkins

  15. Maxx Says:

O-Line help & depth is critical. We all see that with a nice push off the line and a few gaps created that even a Bobby Rainey can look like a stud most days. It always starts at D-Line and O-Line. QB and WR can be had in lower rounds.
Bigger than this…let’s hope Barth comes back strong and we can not have a heart attack every time we’re in FG position!

  16. KJ Says:

I want NO PART of Johnny Manziel. He looks even smaller than he is listed, good luck running around and throwing off your back foot in the NFL, only to have a D-Lineman like Suh land on your after. He also doesn’t have a particularly strong arm. I don’t necessarily think he’s a terrible NFL prospect, but I would never take a weak-armed, tiny, scrambling QB that high. He is in no way like Russell Wilson, who is much thicker and has a much stronger arm.

I would much rather address our pass rush, which is abysmal, with a guy like Clowney or Barr, or go with an O-Lineman. Let Glennon have a full season as a starter. If he’s terrible, who cares? Then we will be horrible for one more season and we can get Winston or Mariota next year. Who I think will be light years ahead of Johnny Football. This crop of QBs isn’t nearly as impressive as next year’s will be.

Also, I agree with Deminion above, I would have no problems taking a guy like Sammy Watkins. You can’t have enough weapons on offense in today’s NFL.

  17. ROBERT6 Says:

We need OL – cut what’s his name….toe man cheeseburger who’s getting paid like bill gates

    DE—could be our biggest need

WR – Vjax aint getting any younger …or faster

DB depending on if we keep Revis. I would keep Revis

  18. sho-nuff Says:

*yawn…there is nothing I believe in less than the pop star with a first round pick…shelf your emotion unless he’s OUT

  19. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

They could use some explosive speed on offense. Underwood is too inconsistent for my liking. Seems like Owusu is injury plagued.

That’s the problem w. Wright in the slot, where’s the true speed? VJ and Williams are good but very similar in style.

  20. Harry Says:

    @Oil Derrick Brooks Says:
    “Not taking the bait.”

LOL, so true. Joe like to get things stirred up in here, yes?

  21. SeanyMac in SC Says:

Oh you Joe, with the Johnny “Spoiled Rotten” Football just working up the readers into a frenzy again. I just know your laughing to yourself every time you post his picture just to see what happens.

  22. deminion Says:

when is the last time we had a burner for WR? joe galloway? if we cn get a burner in FA okay but if not we need sammy watkins imo

  23. Dark Mominix Says:

Sammy Watkins is the kind of impact player that could make the bucs scary. He stretches the field while the D doubles jackson. Timmy and mike get single coverage plus he adds depth if something happens to mike again. Oh yeah doug Martin out of the backfield and maybe some tiquan on 4 wr looks ( if we have any.) With Napoleon back there slinging the dynamite bucs could have the greatest show on earth (no turf in RJ).

  24. Harry Says:

“I want to win now” – the draft is inverted for a reason; to help weak teams get better. It is clearly harder to get elite level talent further down in the draft; sure, it happens, but those situations are the exception.

“We can pick up a QB later in the draft” – It has been historically proven that a team’s chance of drafting an elite level QB doubles in the top 7 picks

Personally, I don’t think Glennon is our guy; he is good, but I don’t think he is going to be great – he has 4 more games to make me apologize.

With that said, I would take a QB only if we are picking in the top 5-7. If we don’t take a QB, I would love Clowney (especially as it keeps him away from Atlanta) and if he is not available, TRADE DOWN and get more picks

  25. Captain Stagger Says:

Stiring the pot, and driving a preverbial wedge between the fan base. But clicks are clicks…..but the notion that JFF, as exciting as he is in college, can translate his chaotic ad lib style of play to the NFL is very slim. Mack/Barr/Watkins/trade down are the acceptable options.

  26. tom v Says:

Johnny Football is too small to be an NFL quarterback. Period.

  27. ROBERT6 Says:

before drafting we should loo at the dead weight, and money plays a part in tat.

get rid of the entitlement attitude thatis not supported by performance

    Nicks – numero UNO
    Penn – #2
    Freeman – CHECK!

Glennon is the future. get used to it, but they need to protect him and change the O to have more 3 &4 WR sets so he can get the ball out. He’s proven he can read a defense and get through his progressions. now get some more WR’s on the field!

  28. Clowney Says:

Drew Brees is too small to be an NFL quarterback. Period.

After picking Jadaveon Clowney in the 1st, they should draft the best QB available in the 2nd. Johnny Football would be great because he’s a winner.
If you could measure the size of his heart, you would agree.

Napoleon Dyno-Mite is just OK, if you want to go to a Super Bowl, you would need the #1 defense in the world (see Clowney).

The Bucs better hope to God that Clowney doesn’t go to Atlanta. It would be a lot worse than picking Barron over Kuechley.

  29. Couch Fan Says:

I’ll be happy with anything other than QB. There is no way we draft a rookie and he comes here and does any better.

#1 picks are suppose to be impact players. No rookie QB will have an instant impact on this team with no weapons and bad O-line. Common sense for the win!

  30. Jo_mama Says:

We are not picking any QB’s in the draft. So people get over it.

Picking a QB in the draft will indicate that Schanio was wrong with Glennon. That is not happening. Nor should it.

Draft a WR with our first pick and a Tight End with our second pick. Then after that I dont care.

Those two picks should be enough for us to compete with NO and Carolina.

  31. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Drew Brees sticks to a gameplan, and doesn’t go sandlot all the time. What OC wants to spend the week sleeping on his office couch just for the QB to throw it out the window and start running around? See: Tebow

  32. MikeJ Says:

Oil Derrick Brooks, are you referring to Manziel?? If so, I concur; when I watch the guy, it seems like his biggest plays are scrambles where he improvises. With all due respect to Fran Tarkenton (whom I saw play at the Sombrero), you can’t win consistently in the NFL doing that.

  33. BigSombrero Says:

Haha, if we take Johnny Backyard with the 4th overall pick we deserve exactly what we get. The good news is, say what you will about Schiano and Dom, but they are at least mentally stable so we don’t have to worry about that scenario.

  34. Phillip Says:

How are the Texans 2-9 if they have lost 11 straight? Also the Jags have won 4 of 5 not 4 in a row..

  35. Rick in Fort Myers Says:

Let’s not go starting a “Manzel Mob.” Have you seen the kid’s wrap sheet?

No felonies, yet, but enough baggage that the Bucs don’t need the kid no matter how good he is on the field. Talk about a distraction.

Moreover, I’ve watched him play twice, and while I don’t like to prognosticate, I think Manzel’s going to get eaten alive in the NFL. His skills are such that he’ll play into the hands of sophisticated NFL defenses in my opinion.

Pass this distraction by and get some pass rushers.

  36. BucsFanGreg Says:

Take Jimmy Garroppolo in the 2nd round. He won’t be around in the 4th

  37. BucsFan68 Says:

Glennon is the future. get used to it
    ______________________________________________________________
That all depends on who the coach is; these next 4 games are crucial. Schiano once said that no one is married to anybody in this league as it pertains to HC and QB. He’s tied to Glennon. Win and the marriage continues. losing badly may lead to a quick divorce
