Everyone across the country is dissecting Mike Glennon. What’s making this third-round pick, dumped into a complete mess, play like the rookie of the year?
Former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht, who works for ESPN and the Buccaneers Radio Network, says it could be just that intangible that great quarterbacks possess.
“Maybe it’s that word everybody uses sometimes with quarterbacks. It’s that “it” factor, you know maybe the kid’s just got it,” Becht said. “He has the ability. He’s very smart. He’s very intelligent.”
Speaking on WDAE-AM 620 today, Becht talked in more detail, as well, explaining that among other things, it’s clear to him the game is “slowing down” for Glennon, a “huge factor to being successful in this business.”

If Glennon keeps up the progress he could be rookie of the year. That would be a Buccaneer feather in his cap.

He’s very poised for a young quarterback, doesn’t seem to lose his cool when the pressure is on. He doesn’t have a Josh Freeman face when he makes mistakes either, he rolls with the punches.
I’m so excited to see this kid keep improving!

This kid is only going to get better. He’s still young and learning but seems to be playing smart and hits what he throws at. I like how quickly he goes through his reads. He seems to have passion for the game and be very dedicated to it, much unlike a QB that recently left

I like the fact that he knows his limitations….looks like he is OK with taking a sack, running out of bounds or throwing the ball away if a play isn’t there.
I think he is starting to gain some confidence on the deep throws which will help him greatly because he has a real cannon for an arm.
No panic in this guy and that really instills confidence with his teamates.

and wait until he has a full offseason and training camp under his belt, and if the pop-star listen and does what he is told by Coach Schiano we will have another good draft. All the expects say that if you can put together 3 good drafts you will have an extended playoff window.

Man!! It just amazes me how my attitude has changed about this season so quickly. It only took three wins. I get so excited thinking we might not have to draft a quarterback in the first round next year. I’m keeping my guard up though. But in 4 weeks we went from definitely drafting a QB to probably NOT drafting a QB. So as far as the draft goes, the world is our oyster.
I’m psychologically preparing myself for another attitude change just in case the losses come around again. It’s been a roller coaster since July.

I come back from vacation and the thing has turned around. Kid sure looks good to me and totally has validated the Free decision.

Agreed, I think he’s only going to get better and when he reaches his full potential he could be something special. As equally important or even more so than being just physically gifted is a QB having a good mental grasp of the game, a passion for learning and who doesn’t repeat mistakes all of which he has been demonstrating as the season has progressed. If we put a top flight receiving corps and oline on the field next year with our RB’s then watch out!

Glennon has been a solid QB so far, I hope he keeps it up. He may not have been as hyped up as Johnny Boy or Geno Smith coming out of last year’s draft, but he’s takin’ the NFL by storm in his 8 games. I’m behind Glennon 100% and would love to see him outplay that manchild Cam Newton who flaunts his talent every chance he gets (although I will admit he is playing well). He’s already outplayed Matty Ice, Matthew Stafford, Ryan Tannehill and almost Russell Wilson. Be careful though, lately a lot of QB’s have been having sophomore slumps (Kaepernick, RGlll, Cam Newton last year) and Freeman fluked an ENTIRE season making us all believe he was the answer when it is now clear he was not.
Only time will tell with Glennon, and so far as time goes by, Glennon gets better.

I like Glennon. Totally vested in him right now but I’ll wait until season end to judge the whole QB future.

U made a great point about the sophomore slumps Kap, Cam, and RG3 experienced; the thing those 3 have in common is that they’re all zone read QB’s (which defenses have seemed to figure out for the most part)…
With that said, Glennon is so far ahead of the rookie curve right now that he isn’t even a rookie to me anymore…Imo, there will always be a place in this league for a pure pocket passer with a great arm…this kid is a throw back; the day we drafted him I said we got a steal….If the league wasn’t so enamored with mobile/zone read QB’s this kid would’ve got drafted in the 1st round (He had everything you looked for in a QB coming out of college; the height, the arm, the brains, and the numbers…As long as we keep a quality O-line in front of him the sky’s the limit….

The thing thing to remember about Freeman was he would hang his receivers out to dry. Just like the hit Underwood took last year. Also teams found out all they had to do was pressure Free and he went into panic mode. Well they have tried already with Glennon.

Let’s get over this idea that Glennon needs to be able to run in order to be the “franchise QB”… Take that out of the equation and he has everything you could want in a young QB. I think we have our guy… FINALLY!

I don’t think you have to worry about a sophomore slump with Glennon because defenses already know what he’s going to do which is sit back in the pocket and beat you with his arm. Those QB’s that you mentioned WalkdaPlanka were all relying on the read option and defenses are figuring out how to stop it. For these read option QB’s to have future success they are going to have to rely more on the pass and use the run as a last resort or a compliment to their game and not a reliance.

The only running QB that is playing well right now is freakish Cam Newton. And he is very selective when he runs. RGIII, Colin Kaepernick, Mike Vick, EJ Manuel, and Terelle Pryor can’t stay healthy and/or are not playing well. Russell Wilson is playing “ok”. So this idea of having a mobile QB is overrated. Glennon has shown to be serviceable in picking up scramble yards when necessary and has actually shown really good movement in the pocket and making throws on the run.
The best QB’s in the game are NOT running QB’s. Yes, Glennon will never blow you away with jaw-dropping, ankle-breaking runs, but so far he has shown that he can do what it takes to win. That’s why, even if we end up drafting a QB we should NOT draft a Johnny Football/Mariota player. The chance of us even drafting a QB right now is highly unlikely.

Having a healthy Mike Will back, a stud TE and a Tavon Austin type in the slot and he can start spreading the ball around. Oh yeah, let’s not forget DMart.
Defenses can’t account for everybody.

If we end up drafting a first round QB, it will be because Glennon and the Bucs hit the big wall from this point until the end of the season.
We might pick up a QB in round 2 or 4 in particular if we trade down and get extra picks…..we could trade from 5 or 6 to 10 and still get a WR/TE OL,DE, LB…there are plenty of great players in this draft & the QBs will probalbly be 4 of the top ten picks….

There’s more to a team than just their record. I’m thinking about next year, this one is going nowhere. Doesn’t mean you can’t look at what we have in terms of players and coaches and think about who should stay, who should go, and what we need to add. Otherwise, there’d be no point in even watching the games.

The eye in the sky don’t lie, Walter. This clown Schiano just flat out sucks, but people want to make excuses for him because he won two games against bad teams and had a third game against a Lions team that refused to win. When you have five turnovers against a team and you only win by three, that’s a team that was playing not to lose. It’s ridiculous that we had the ball at Detroit’s 10 yard line and came away with zero points. Oh wait, that’s all the kicker’s fault, I forgot.

Glennon completed his academic tenure at NC State with two degrees: a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, graduating on December 14, 2012. His GPA in the MALS program, which had an emphasis in leadership and sports management, was in the 3.8 range on a 4.0 scale. The curriculum included classes in financial management of corporations and investments and portfolio management

Team is doing all I ask of them- playing hard, good defense, entertaining on offense, and competitive in last 4 games.
Yeah- I’m excited about the complete turnaround! I’ve been as impressed in the last four games, as I have been in a long time.
That’s all it takes to get my support! I don’t expect Super Bowls every year. But expect the team to play hard, and be competitive!

As to Glennon:
I’m not sold on him yet. Let me ask you people this. Say he wins a couple more games this year, the Bucs don’t draft another QB and he has this sophomore slump people have mentioned next year. Then the next year comes around and he still sucks.
What do we do then? Do we look back and say we should have drafted a QB in the 2014 draft? 2016 is a bit late, don’t you think? Our defense will be at their prime and we would have to break in yet another rookie QB.
That’s why we HAVE to draft another QB in this coming draft. Better to get ones and start working with him this off season butxstill let Glennon start. At worst we have the best backup situation arou.d.

How about blaming Schiano’s play not to lose philosophy where we didn’t step on the Lions’ neck when we had the chance? We lost to the Saints, Jets, and Seahawks for the exact same reason. That’s why it’s a joke when people try to include the Seahawks game as part of the so-called “turnaround.” I knew Pumpkinhead was going to try and sit on that lead and play not to lose. It was completely predictable.

@BuccaneerBonzai – Well that’s just a chance you have to take. If the Bucs don’t draft a QB next year then that means they are putting full faith in Mike Glennon. Also, let’s not rule out the Bucs signing a FA QB to be the backu, im not sure which ones are available but there have to be some decent ones. What if Stafford or Newton or Luck all failed their teams completely in their rookie year? Well, Stafford was injured but once he got on the field he started playing well, threw over 5,000 yards! How many QB’s have ever done that? 4? Anway, all those guys were No.1 overall picks and if they didn’t work out well then their teams would be S.O.L. You always take chances in the draft, you never know until you see it unfold. And with Glennon playing so well it’s only logical that the Bucs use their picks on a necessity OTHER THAN QB. This team has a lot of holes, we are 3-8 regardless of how well we have been doing lately.
Keep in mind, Freeman’s rookie year wasn’t even as good as Glennon’s, yet the Bucs didn’t even draft a QB next year, passing up on multiple chances to draft Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, and Jimmy Clausen. All 3 of those QB’s had great college careers like the ones coming out for the 2014 draft class. None of them panned out, teams took a chance and suffered the consequences. After the Bucs put faith in Freeman he had a career year, unfortunately he was never consistent enough to be a good starter in this league. You just never know what’s gonna happen, but right now Glennon is playing well and what more can you ask of him?

Count me among those who at first thought QB in the first rd who now wants in the Gleenon MOB. He has taken the league by storm, I am excited about this kid. As many of you have already said, the jury is still out on him but all the evidence points to a kid with all the tools in his bag to be a franchise QB.
I read as many posts as I can and most of you who doubted him said he could not hit the deep ball and/or was not mobile enough (can’t move in the pocket). Well I think he has proven you wrong, and now lets just hope together as BUCS FANS that this kid can sustain this level of play. One of you mentioned before that what you like about Glennon the most is that he learns from his mistakes and never makes the same mistake twice. I believe Shiano and Dom when they say Glennon is the first one in the building and the last to leave, he studies and works hard. He studies the game, this is why he hardly makes the same mistakes. I am convinced.Whats exciting to me is to see how long can he sustain this level of play and can he continue to improve at this current pace. Who is Mike Glennon? Can we expect this type of play from him week in and week out? Will the real Mike Gleenon please stand up! Im not sure any of us know how good our quarterback is yet, but one thing is for sure; we have one!!

Only time and years will tell with Glennon; has looked good in the last 3 games. Bucs do need to get back to the playoffs, though. This has been another lost year in that respect. This makes a 6 year playoff drought and that is not good.

I hate to be redundant but let’s see how he does in the 5 games. A couple of concerns, one has the league seen enough film on this guy? Second how will he respond to a really bad game? The Lions concentrated on our run game and forced him to throw they loaded the box and left a poor secondary exposed. Our defense gave him opportunities, good field position and points. Atlanta rolled over. Can Glennon come from behind? There are way to many variables at this point. Finally without exception we are going to need a back-up. You only have 2 picks in the 1st 3 rounds, how about AJ McCArron? Competition plus back–up.?

@MIke M…..This guy is a pure pocket passer. Film doesn’t help you a whole lot with guys like that. They just drop back, go through their reads and hit the open receiver. My only gripe with Glennon so far is that he needs to speed up his read and get rid of the ball quicker. It pays off at times but he has to get that mental clock that tells him the pocket has probably broken down and it’s time to get rid of the ball. Some of the sacks he takes are entirely on him. That is something he will develop and it has nothing to do with mechanics. Overall I am immensely impressed with Glennon and he is turning out to be just what I thought he would be when we drafted him. Anyone who watched his college tape should have seen this coming. He made some amazing throws in college and put up great numbers with average receivers. Doing the same thing now but he does have V-Jax the one armed wonder. Never seen anyone make one hand catches look so easy.

I happen to like Glennon alot. I think we should draft a QB in the mid to late rounds. A kid I’ve been watching comes to mind. Brendan Kay from U. Cincinnati. I also think we should consider trading down or possibly drafting Matthews OT.

Simple bit of advice from an avid (lunatic, refresh your page 100 times a day) reader and web designer. One of the perks about your website is that you can read all of the content on one page without having to refresh…this is important because my job takes me to places where I don’t have internet connection for sometimes hours and its nice to load your page up knowing I have a good 20 articles or something great to read…
