Greg Schiano Is Developing A Quarterback
November 24th, 2013Amazing rookie Mike Glennon continues to stun the NFL. Glennon’s now played half a season (eight games) with 13 touchdown passes against just four interceptions.
That projects out to a full season of 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions! That’s in the ballpark of Josh Freeman’s famous 25-and-6 of 2010, a season that catapulted Freeman to budding superstar status and landed him getting voted by his peers as the 83rd best player in the NFL.
What more could the Bucs ask of Glennon? Sure, he’s making some rookie mistakes, like needlessly taking a fourth-quarter sack today. But Glennon’s not screwing up much.
And now he’s winning — three in a row!
But a bigger question is what more could Bucs fans ask of Greg Schiano and Mike Sullivan when it comes to developing a quarterback?
If this Glennon progression continues, it makes Joe wonder what Schiano-Sullivan could do with an elite first-round quarterback out of the 2014 draft? Of course, that won’t happen. It’s all about No. 8 for the New Schiano Order, assuming the regime survives this season, unless Schiano wants competition at the position.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:20 pm
Soooooo, Jfro does not give us the best chance to win??? Could to see everyone come around to the mob mentality. And once again the Bucs shock the world!!!
November 24th, 2013 at 5:21 pm
Mike glennon mob stand up the long ball was great today.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:22 pm
I don’t think Schiano is going anywhere.
Glennon did a pretty good job today. This was a winning team, so he earned props.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:23 pm
Calculated again…138 QB ratings….isn’t that two games in a row over 130?
November 24th, 2013 at 5:23 pm
Stop asking for a QB to draft with the 1st rounder. In case you haven’t notice third round QBs from NC State are gold.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:23 pm
Glennon has done better than I could ever have hoped. Very impressive! Are we sure he’s a rookie?? Coulda fooled me.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:25 pm
Glennon is the real deal! Glad he leads our team!
November 24th, 2013 at 5:27 pm
So Joe????? Still think Glennon is a backup? Just curious
November 24th, 2013 at 5:28 pm
He certainly played better than Stafford & without the weapons.,,.,.,I can’t believe our 2nd half defense without Revis, Goldson & Foster played so well. I think some of our younger players are developing very well…
Glennon, Wright, Rainey, James, Gorrer, LJ, Banks…..
We sure do miss Barth….I was afraid when he went out it would cost us…we caught a break today in spite of Lindell.,
November 24th, 2013 at 5:28 pm
What round was Brady, Bree’s and Peyton drafted?
November 24th, 2013 at 5:28 pm
As I said before when we drafted Glennon this guy is no joke I’m an NC State fan/ ACC and watched Bible develop Matt Ryan at BC then Russell Wilson and Glennon. I knew when we got him he would start and be special watch what he will bring in 14….. GO BUCS!!!
November 24th, 2013 at 5:28 pm
Hell yeah let’s gamble a first round pick and unload the Glazer fortune so we can get Johnny Football. He looked awesome yesterday against LSU!! NOT!
But we could at least count on his maturity and poise to settle down out team.
Yeah he’s no JFro troublemaker is he?
Maybe we’ll get lucky and pick up a Ryan Leaf clone..how about the surefire Jamarcus Russell?
Hey if you want to draft a GREAT college Q.B.save your draft pics and just sign Tebow…he was truly great in college.
Are you seeing a pattern here. !st round draft picks at Q.B. are always a gamble and the only thing you can count on is spending boat loads of cap space with the gamble.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:28 pm
Joe won’t tolerate insults and baseless assumptions. Joe writes about what he feels. Joe couldn’t give a crap about reader comments. –Joe
November 24th, 2013 at 5:29 pm
I’ll giv Glennon his props. He finally completed a deep ball in stride. Him taking sacks like he does is gonna come back to haunt him one of these days, but we overcame that today. I still credit the D for the win. 5 turnovers, one for a td (just enough extra points to win), and one to ice the game. Blocked punt was nice too, but sacks and missed FG ruined that.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:31 pm
How about the rook Johnthan Banks covering megatron? Love it man. So many things I saw today that show this team is headed in the right direction.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:31 pm
Who can guess what the Big Dawg is going to say tomorrow? Not enough short throws? Too accurate on the long bombs?
November 24th, 2013 at 5:31 pm
Joe if I see another week with article upon article of Johnny Boy after the game Glennon had against the 6-4 Lions I’m gonna be disappointed in you.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:34 pm
I will be the first to say I was wrong about Schiano. Looks like Freeman is a total bust and Glennon looks like he is getting better and better. Things are looking good. I don’t mind going through a season without playoffs as long as there is hope and progress and I am seeing that now. Huge win on the road. This team is learning as a unit to win and spoiling others seasons.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:37 pm
Joe,.. the stupidity of your final thought about how much better could the BUCS do with a first round pick is Staggering! Sorry he didn’t throw a game ending int to give you something to actually bitch about,… (No I’m Not!) There is a reason Schiano wanted this kid, and you are seeing it on the field! GO BUCS!
November 24th, 2013 at 5:37 pm
I agree this kid is really coming along well. He may very well become an “elite” QB if this progress continues. If we can acquire/draft some top flight WR’s our passing game could be something special next year. Regarding the game, my hats off to the defense, what a great bend but not break performance in the 2nd half by the secondary even with Revis out, just tremendous. As I wrote yesterday, I didn’t see us winning this unless we got an exceptional pass rush which we did keeping stafford under pressure the whole game. And the takeaway from Calvin Johnson of all people at the end of the game to seal it was fantastic. I’m getting fired up about next year already!
November 24th, 2013 at 5:40 pm
Glennon has played very well the last few games for sure. Lets be a little realistic though, if our offense was above average that would of been a blowout. 5to’s and a blocked kick (2 deep in Lions territory, zero points). Megatron holds on to either of those last 2 catches we are most likely losing or heading to OT.
Evaluations still need to be made through this season and offseason to see where we are and our options. We can’t draft a Qb just to draft one. We need tons of help all over the place besides probably rb. I think Glennon can be very good but we need a great one or close to it IMO.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:41 pm
Like I’ve been saying… No need to draft a QB in the 1st rd. Draft either a stud DE or a burner WR (Sammy Watkins or Beckham Jr. in the 2nd). I’d rather have the burner. Then TE, etc. Glennon is going to be the guy next year. To speculate otherwise at this point, I believe is wishful thinking (for some). I’ll be the first to admit that I was not a Glennon fan and almost threw up in my mouth when we drafted him in the 3rd rd. However, I will admit that I think I was wrong. I think Glennon could be good enough (not saying he’s the next Brady/Brees/Manning) to help us win with a good defense and explosive playmakers around him.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:42 pm
Drew: Brady was a 6th round pick I think….
November 24th, 2013 at 5:44 pm
“Are you seeing a pattern here.(sic)” yes. the 80’s called and want their “not” after sarcasm back. and why not use it after each sarcastic statement?
cap space is set for 1st round picks, pretty much. also, what are the odds that 3rd round qb’s do better than 1st round qb’s? of course there are exceptions.
comprehend, or NOT?
November 24th, 2013 at 5:45 pm
Let’s review first round Q.B.s. Manuel was the only one taken last year and the year before doesn’t leave enough time to judge players like RGIII and Tannyhill although Brandon Weedon is close to a bust.
2011 #8: Jake Locker (Washington), Tennessee Titans
#10: Blaine Gabbert (Missouri), Jacksonville Jaguars
#12: Christian Ponder (Florida State), Minnesota Vikings
2010 #1: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), St. Louis Rams
#25: Tim Tebow (Florida), Denver Broncos
2009 #1: Matthew Stafford (Georgia), Detroit Lions
#5: Mark Sanchez (USC), New York Jets
#17: Josh Freeman (Kansas State), Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2008 a good year..#3: Matt Ryan (Boston College), Atlanta Falcons
#18: Joe Flacco (Delaware), Baltimore Ravens
2007 #1: JaMarcus Russell (LSU), Oakland Raiders
#22: Brady Quinn (Notre Dame), Cleveland Browns
2006 #3: Vince Young (Texas), Tennessee Titans
#10: Matt Leinart (USC), Arizona Cardinals
#11: Jay Cutler (Vanderbilt), Denver Broncos
That’s enough to make my point. Again does anybody see a pattern here?
November 24th, 2013 at 5:46 pm
We got real lucky today. If not for that last fumble, the Bucs lose to a team after they turned the ball over FOUR TIMES!!!
Glennon is playing as well as you could expect, and I appreciate he is taking care of the ball – but for the love of God, somebody teach him to throw the damn thing out of bounds and quit taking sacks!
November 24th, 2013 at 5:47 pm
Glennon is on top of his game, moving his raised finger to hurry the playcall. He is not intimidated, even in the face of a sack. On that last pick play the Lions were holding as someone noted.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:49 pm
Plank:
You will be disappointed.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:49 pm
@stratobuc
Exactly we had around 230 total yards against a horrific pass defense. We won but our defense took it.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:50 pm
2010
#1: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), St. Louis Rams
#25: Tim Tebow (Florida), Denver Broncos
2009
#1: Matthew Stafford (Georgia), Detroit Lions
#5: Mark Sanchez (USC), New York Jets
#17: Josh Freeman (Kansas State), Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2008
#3: Matt Ryan (Boston College), Atlanta Falcons
#18: Joe Flacco (Delaware), Baltimore Ravens
2007
#1: JaMarcus Russell (LSU), Oakland Raiders
#22: Brady Quinn (Notre Dame), Cleveland Browns
2006
#3: Vince Young (Texas), Tennessee Titans
#10: Matt Leinart (USC), Arizona Cardinals
#11: Jay Cutler (Vanderbilt), Denver Broncos
How many of those guys would you rather have than Glennon. Certainly a few in that list but far more I wouldn’t want.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:50 pm
@StPeteBucsFan
who can believe in what you say after saying that the giraffe took the sack and not threw it away to keep the clock running? and you said it was a good thin. lol, wow!
November 24th, 2013 at 5:51 pm
joe is used to being a disappointment…. 😉
November 24th, 2013 at 5:51 pm
Joe won’t tolerate insults and baseless assumptions in the reader comments. Joe couldn’t give a crap about reader comments. Joe contradicts himself in consecutive sentences. Joe not so swift. Joe have another beer. Joe very angry. Joe stomp his feet. Joe throw up on himself. Joe fall asleep. Joe wash vomit off his faded Shaun King jersey. Joe try to be better next Sunday.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:53 pm
our defense is scary good and scary bad! it was a whole team effort for that win. hell the offense and special teams showed both great and disappointing plays that game!
November 24th, 2013 at 5:54 pm
Had to slip that in didn’t ya joe lol
November 24th, 2013 at 5:54 pm
ummmmmmm…contradiction, yes it was dave. but was that necessary?
November 24th, 2013 at 5:55 pm
not wise to denigrate the cocreators of the site you visit.
November 24th, 2013 at 5:59 pm
Man Glennon can’t do enough to win some folks over. He seems to have a common trait with guys like Manning, Brady, Rogers, and Brees…he can process information quickly and read a defense well (for a rookie). He’s accurate and has shown an aversion to turning the ball over. I’ll take those abilities any day over a mobile QB or a QB who “looks the part of a franchise QB”. If this kid where a 1st round pick made by a coach not named Schiano or a GM not named Dominick I’m thinking his performance would have already been good enough to silence the “let’s draft a QB in 2014” crowd.
November 24th, 2013 at 6:01 pm
Look, Glennon is our guy!! Use our 1st for Watkins (and somewhere in the 2nd or if we can land a 3rd in a trade) then focus on a QB for a change of pace type backup like Connor Shaw….might even be able to get him in the 4th.
November 24th, 2013 at 6:06 pm
Congrats Joe on going an entire post without mentioning Knucklehead Manziel.
November 24th, 2013 at 6:08 pm
Dave calls it as he sees it. Joe should appreciate that, as he claims to do the same. Dave comes here because there’s lots of fun Bucs news, not because Dave thinks the commentary is especially smart or illuminating, or the purveyors of said commentary above being called on their silliness. If Dave gets ‘banned’ or some such thing, so be it. Dave is of the opinion that that would make Joe look worse than Dave. But as Joe says, he cares not what readers think, at least those like Dave that occasionally or frequently leave comments. Also, Dave has grown quite fond of referring to himself in the third person. Dave.
November 24th, 2013 at 6:10 pm
@Dave
You gotta wonder about someone who constantly refers to themselves in the third person…..
November 24th, 2013 at 6:13 pm
you don’t “calls it as he sees it.” the contradiction yes. but the fantasy blurb was unwarranted. perhaps you should not be projecting on others. and i’m sure your dog appreciates your third person mimicry, too.
November 24th, 2013 at 6:20 pm
@Lurker
And so if Lindell converts a very makeable FG attempt indoors, no wind, no bad turf to worry about would you rather have 30 seconds less left on the clock for the Lions to work with?
Hindsight is 20/20. A normal kicker makes that FG easily. Lindell on the other hand could have just as easily blown the kick even without the sack. And so your speculation is no more valid than mine.
This game would not have been this close if Lindell simply does his job twice.
November 24th, 2013 at 6:37 pm
Joe states “That’s in the ballpark of Josh Freeman’s famous 25-and-6 of 2010, a season that catapulted Freeman to budding superstar status and landed him getting voted by his peers as the 83rd best player in the NFL.” Yes, freeman did have those numbers but alot of us remember that season we played alot of bad teams and how many of you remember the amount of interceptions that should have been that were dropped by defenses? Glennon has shown he can make the throws and his numbers are more accurate of what to expect in the future. So that being said there are few question marks with Glennon as there was with Freeman. I like where things are headed. Go Bucs!
November 24th, 2013 at 6:38 pm
The game should not have been that close anyway. 5 defensive turnovers, a blocked punt and a defensive score. This shouldn’t have been close, but it was… Without us turning the ball over. I’m tired of the excuses about injured starters, we still have more talent on the field than we did a few years ago when we were winning games equally close… With less talent.
November 24th, 2013 at 6:40 pm
Glennon has quite a few passes that should have been intercepted as well. Be careful about anointing this guy too early.
November 24th, 2013 at 6:42 pm
Dave is an ass. Don’t like the commentary, don’t participate. No need to need to sling insults, no need to say anything at all, since we’re all so obviously beneath your third person self, & unworthy of notice. JUST GO AWAY
November 24th, 2013 at 6:50 pm
Bucs: 10 1st downs, 4/14 on 3rd down conversion, 22 yards rushing. Look at the box score. The defense won it with some lucky breaks, especially the last interception/strip. Great that the defense is playing very well because it sure isn’t coaching; still too many penalties.
Merry Xmas from Canada to all the alpha males.
November 24th, 2013 at 6:57 pm
@stpete
A 50 yarder is easy huh? I would rather have the 30 seconds and attempt a 38-40 yard kick. You are so pro Glennon you are making very uneducated comments. Please stop. You like Glennon great
November 24th, 2013 at 7:41 pm
Glennon did pretty good today he did hit 1 deep ball to underwood n stride so I will give him props becaise he showed he has the strength to get it out there but that was only 1 so he coulda got lucky lmao cuz whenever he throw to v kax he always gotta come back lol but id still like to see our NEW COACHING STAFF draft a qb to compete with gkenno because he’s shown flashes yet not enough to consistently lead the team against good defenses for a FULL GAME NOT HALF… what did he have two or three completions n the 2nd have? Good ball to underwood but that 85 yd td pads the stats quite a bit no? Without that he was round what 150 ish? Stafford threw that n interceptions yrds and still had more passing yrds then him. N this game its jot just easy completions u gotta havr some balls get some yrds an put up somr points “consistently”
November 24th, 2013 at 7:42 pm
We had 10 first downs as a offense running and throwing new orleans saints do that n one quarter lmao it takes us a whole game P.U.
November 24th, 2013 at 7:49 pm
that sack glennon took probably wasnt the best choice but think about it he is a rookie going to make mistakes it could have been worst he could have tried to force it in or fumble…he is gaining great experience
November 24th, 2013 at 8:13 pm
Thats why you throw the ball out of bounds.
November 24th, 2013 at 8:17 pm
StPeteBucsFan Says
“How many of those guys would you rather have than Glennon. Certainly a few in that list but far more I wouldn’t want.”
Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Matthew Stafford
At present.
Mike Glennon is NOT that proven. Ryan was a fav to go to the SB this year, Flacco has gone, and Stafford has passed for 16,000 yards faster than any QB in history.
So, yes, they are better than Glennon. It just so happens that all three are having bad years, but that’s not the norm.
November 24th, 2013 at 8:24 pm
Mike Glennon would have to win out to convince me. Or close to it. He’ll have to soundly beat a great team. This win isn’t THAT impressive.
The Lions are barely a winning team (6-4 going into today) and the Bucs barely beat them. Still a lot to prove.
And until they do? I’m still rooting for a QB.
And, StPeteBucsFan, how about you incluse the last 2 years in that list?
E.J. Manuel. Andrew Luck. Robert Griffin.
So that’s 6 good ones.
November 24th, 2013 at 9:11 pm
Glennon is < Andrew Luck definitely, Robert Griffin probably, E.J. Manuel doubtfully
November 25th, 2013 at 1:17 am
much to the chagrin of the clown poodle…who mocks the rays for spreadsheets but has being paying for a service just to pick apart Glennon with said spreadsheets…..TKraz for that 3-7 slot please
