Glennon Is 24 Years Too Late

The debate will rage for many months. The topic is simple: Is Mike Glennon the guy to lead the Bucs to the promised land?
Can it be all about No. 8 in a division with Cam Newton, Drew Brees and Matt Ryan?
Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles (1990 – 1996) offered an emphatic, “No,” on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday. Glennon, per Beckles, is simply in the wrong era.
“Mike Glennon, to me, would be a solid quarterback in 1990. It’s 2013. You gotta have something special, ok,” Beckles said. “We’re not good enough anywhere to have an average quarterback and win consistently.”
You can catch Beckles’ full rant below. Joe doesn’t disagree with Beckles. However, Joe wants to give Glennon more time. If he can thrive through the Bucs’ difficult final six-game stretch, then there’s no reason to think it can’t continue.

And Glennon had ALL DAY to throw against the Falcons. An “average” QB can become a great QB pretty quickly when the offensive line is effective and the run game is strong. I don’t buy into this idea that you need the next coming of Peyton Manning to win consistently.

so strange to me how no one allows for the possibility that he continues to improve. how many QBs max out their potential 6 games into their career? odds of finding a QB better than brees…about 1%…but he doesnt have too many years left. newton may become elite, but right now he manages games. ryan sure looks like 4th best in this division right now.

Another thing to note is that MG is showing improvement without any real WR threat outside of VJax. Sure, Wright’s shown flashes and Underwood will catch a ball every now and then, but no Mike Williams and no legit TE threat? All things considered, he hasn’t been bad given what he’s working with in the passing game.
On the flip, he’s benefited from an incredible “next man up” rotation at RB. We all knew what we have in Dougie, but for Mike James and now Rainey to do as well as they’ve done — no one could have called that.
Bottom line, it’s a big ol’ fat “Incomplete” grade at the moment. I’m pleased with his progress and think he can be a legit QB in this league. Considering he doesn’t even have all his weapons, it’s a testament to his growth.

I don’t get the Glennon hate, while I am not 100% sold on him. He has done enough to deserve a shot at the starting job next year. By the end of the season he should and likely will hold every record for a Buc rookie QB (except maybe wins, I don’t know this number)

You can’t compare a rookie QB to Brees. Thats wouldn’t be fair to anyone who isn’t named Andrew Luck.
Cam Newton is a glorified RB who throws the ball from time to time.
Matt Ryan is the most overrated QB in the league and is showing how average he is now that he is this season.
The only thing Glennon has done is improve steadily from week to week. I see no reason why he can’t be a very good QB in this league. I’m not saying its gauranteed but he sure as hell hasn’t shown that he can’t be.

Ian gets paid to run hs mouth, and he excels at it. Joe, I love ya, but you get paid to write words, and to promote Ian running his mouth. I meand GD, this guy hasn’t even played a full season in the NFL and you guys are already predicting his success or failure and his future success or failure. Do you think we are stupid/ Look at the first three year success or failure rates of any quarterbackin this league, even the great ones like Breeze, Manning or Brady, and you will find many ups and downs, and a lot of pain in the first years. Glennon looks greeat for a first year rookie on a team with so much stress. I say he has a potentially bright future here or wherever he goes. Stop with the crystal ball BS and write about what we know.

We struggled with a bum for mostly 5 years yet condem Glennon for delivering exactly what Freeman was lacking over just 7 starts? Maturity, coachability and consistency over flash play ability?
Some in the TB media just prefer to bitch and moan. Ian just proved that.

We shall see how well Glennon handles the load this weekend. Detroit has a good run defense. Glennon must step up this weekend for us to win. Coaching must stay aggressive against a playoff contender. This game should show us where we are as a team including coaching.
We’ll find out if the honeymoon is over in Tampa Bay this weekend.

Joe I wish you would stop quoting Ian, and Shaun King like they are some kind of QB experts.. Let me ask you a question.. What the hell could an offensive gaurd tell you about QB development? And as bad as King was you wanna take him up on it? These two are not credible. Hell King said Martin was a bad pick in the first round WHILE HE WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A 1900 TOTAL YDS YEAR!! Ask Phil Simms or Kurt Warner or somebody worth noting.

We have won 2 in a row, and nearly beat the mighty Seahawks where they never lose at.
WTF more can Glennon do ? He has been nearly perfect lately.

Ian Beckels… your are 100% correct. Mike Glennon is smart and solid but Brad johnson .
I love Mike G but we need more long term.

Not every QB is Montana Elway, Marino, Brees, Brady, Manning, etc. Glennon has a chance to be a solid QB in this league. it’s way too early to anoint him as a so called franchise QB, but he’s doing a good job and can make the throws. A solid defense can ultimately be the catalyst for winning. Brad Johnson wasn’t a world beater. He was a good QB with a great defense. That’s all it takes.

Drew Brees , Tom Brady and Payton Manning are not athletic as Rogers, Newton and Russell Wilson are yet they are elite by staying in the pocket. I don’t see Philip Rivers and Eli Manning making plays with their legs either. My point is you don’t have to be able to run a 4.4 40 and be able to throw it 70 yards in the air to be successful at quarterback.
it really comes down to some simple keys to success- does the QB know where to go with the ball? Can he read defenses? Does he play in a system that creates mismatches for receivers to get open? Can he hang in the pocket when rushers are in his face? Does he have intelligence and leadership ability.
From the 7 games I have seen Glennon play he does have a ceiling like an Eli Manning, a Matt Ryan or a Joe Flacco. Those guys have all guided their teams deep into the playoffs and Manning and Flacco each have Super Bowl rings.
Its just too early to say whether Glennon will be that level of QB but at least he has some of the attributes that many of these successful pocket passers have.

so, Ian Beckles was defending a 30th ranked QB like josh freeman because his upside no matter he was on his 5th year as a pro but is not sold on a 15th ranked QB with 6th games as a pro….

I ready to watch Glennon and see how it goes but I think his upside is average at best. And I think Manziel is special he he is there you got to take him.

Mike Glennon to me is showing all the signs you’d look for in a starting NFL QB. Poised, Arm, Smart Decision, Accurate, and now winning. I don’t care what round he was drafted, I’m just glad the Bucs did!

Joe values people’s thoughts from those who actually made a living playing in the NFL. Joe never has. Thus, Joe values their opinion. Doesn’t mean Joe agrees with them. Joe also has reservations about Glennon as a long-term answer for the Bucs. This is a subject Joe thinks is very timely and important.
If all you want are positive stories about the Bucs, this is why Buccaneers.com exists. You will never see a disparaging word typed about the Bucs on that site. Ever.

Enough of this crap already. Glennon is not an issue or even close right now. With the way he’s played the last 3 weeks the Bucs could go 12-4 next season if everyone else plays to their potential. I’m missing where going 12-4 is somehow a bad thing. There are exactly 4 QBs in this league who could win with anyone: Manning, Brady, Brees and Rodgers. Thats it, thats the list. So to think you can somehow overcome a 1/8 chance of finding one of those types is ridiculous unless you plan on drafting a QB every year.
Its also worth noting of those 4, only one was taken in the first 20 picks. Great QBs are not beholden to being top 10 picks.

I’m not certain of that, the sizzle is pushing up the current crop of QB’s entering the draft. But that’s against college competition right?
But to your point, each has the propensity to fail in the NFL. Glennon has shown the ability to endure the mental aspects if the job so far. Can he open up his game a bit and master the deep ball? Ah, that’s the question in my mind.

Many see something in Glennon. That game in Seattle showed a young QB who is not easy to confuse. As Gruden used to say, “do you want to be great”, we’ll see, but right now, he is working his tail off and it shows in his game.

The NFL will always rely on pocket passers vs running QBs, a running QBs life span in the nfl is not very long, as a matter of fact, I do believe we are witnessing the beginning of the end of RG3’s career, if he continues to take the hits he takes, he has maybe 3 seasons left in that scrawny body.

The option read style QB is just a fad. Defenses will adjust and every team will simply return to a QB that is smart, accurate, can read defenses, and consistently move the chains. Glennon has shown tremendous potential to develop into this type of QB.

I understand if people aren’t sure that Glennon can be the guy.
But what I will never understand is how these guys are so sure that he isn’t.
What signs do you look for in a young QB?
Accurate? Check
Makes good decisions? Check
Doesn’t force the ball to recievers? Check
Strong arm? Check (although i’d like to see more accuracy on the deep balls.)
Leadership? Check
Works hard? From all reports check?
Tell me again why we can’t win with this guy?

The problem with Glennon is his velocity on throws is weak and eventually NFL d’s will prey on it. His numbers are nice and all but a lot of that is misleading since the dude plays wayyyyyy too safe most games. This falcons game is the 1st time he showed the ability to make big plays but that D is horrendous. His “accuracy” is overblown as he is very inaccurate a lot of the time. His good decision making is also overblown because he definitely does not go through all his progressions. The kid is alright but he is no Franchise QB and if we start him next year NFL D’s will get him.

Ian has no credibility. This is the same guy that has been saying for years that Gerald Mccoy isn’t any good. He is overly negative about the bucs just to piss people off and get a rise out of them because it is good for ratings. Even back when we were having winning seasons he rarely had anything positive to say. I quit listening to him when the new FM sports station came on. The birthday challenges are a joke.

I love it how glennon has done nothing but play well and improve as a rookie. Yet so many are still saying he’s not the answer and doesn’t have the wow factor. Well guess what? Tom Brady doesn’t have that wow factor nor does Peyton manning in terms of arm talent. They’re football iq are ridiculously high and make smart throws on anticipation.
I’ll admit. Glennon will have to improve on his deep ball accuracy. But how many times do you see out WR have seperation on the deep balls? Rare. Jackson and Williams aren’t speed demons. They are fast but crisp route runners who dominate jump ball opportunities.

I think people saying we can’t win a Super Bowl in time with Glennon are fools!!! Glennon reminds me of a guy who happens to have 2 super bowl wins recently. Eli Manning, not that mobile but not a stiff, good arm strength but not a cannon. And frankly I think Glennon makes better decisions with the ball then Eli does in year ‘1’. Eli has always been a high INT guy. And they are both running the same Offense this year. And to think how Bucs fans are hating on him like we here at one Buc place have a pedigree of top flight QBs in our History???? Name one QB???? Exactly. Kid is playing with a banged up O line tht has been getting better but still minus big time talent in Nicks, No # 2 WR or #3 WR as Underwood couldn’t even beat out Clayton 2.0 before the season started and an undrafted WR converted to TE experiment . lost our Probowl rb and his back up Rb. Not to mention the kid doesn’t make the same dumb mistakes twice I like that a lot. and give him credit for changing plays at the line of scrimmage A la Peyton Manning and running the ball . Every time he has changed plays at the line of scrimmage to running play e always get positive yards.
