Greg Schiano: Mr. Aggressive

The 2013 Bucs brought you what turned out to be a game-losing, non-aggressive, three-man rush to close the Jets game in New York after an endless stream of blitzes.
And the same Bucs passed on a chance to win the Week 2 Saints game with a 3rd-and-6 throw (after Josh Freeman had just completed consecutive throws of 20 yards and 18 yards!!) only to fail on a long field goal on fourth down — and lose the game.
But now the Bucs have adjusted. They need to be aggressive from coaches to players, says Greg Schiano.
“We need to stay aggressive. We need to go out there and, if we can clean up some of the things that we didn’t do well, and continue to play aggressive and call the game aggressive and do all those things, you know, we have a chance to keep this roll going,” Schiano said this week on WDAE-AM 620.
“That’s exactly what we were talking about [leading at halftime against the Falcons]. The game hasn’t changed. It doesn’t matter what the score is right now. We’re going to come and continue to do the things, we saved a few things for the second half that we didn’t show in the first half, and we try to do that.”
Schiano has been clobbered by fans and media for ineffective second-half adjustments. But it seems perhaps Schiano is adjusting in the second half of the season. It’s clear there’s a fresh aggressive mindset among the coaching staff. The only reason Joe can figure is there’s now a quarterback in place that has earned their trust.
Don’t get Joe wrong. Joe still thinks Schiano should have played more aggressively with Freeman. You just can’t play conservative and/or scared, no matter who is on the field. That’s not winning NFL football.

I love that he is getting more aggressive and adapting his style. However, I hope it does not translate to too much of the mickey mouse stuff as it nearly did against Atlanta. Onsides kick, fake punt, terrible RB throw. I like aggressive play calling, but some of these types of calls are dangerous and I hope they don’t start overusing them.

BucsFan13, Freeman really hasn’t been given the chance. He was thrown to the wolves without knowing his offense there, threw ONE pick and got benched. The Vikings coaching staff is indecisive and will likely be fired at the end of the season because of the poor job they are doing hamdling their players.

Maybe its just me, but every time Freeman put the ball in the air I’d hold my breath just waiting for an interception. After a few games with Glennon under center, my blood pressure has come down dramatically when our offense is on the field. I think Schiano felt the same way. Lets face it, Freeman has (had?) the tools to be a good QB, but he just couldn’t do it. And the fact that he’s still on the bench behind Ponder in Minnesota is telling.

The Bucs got lucky with those trick plays. How many times have they tried things like that and had it work against them? Several. Everything fell into place last week. That doesn’t mean it will this week.
Not against a good team.
Personally I think we can beat the Lions, but at this point a win is a loss.

That’s because there is no longer any pressure to win. The season is shot. Glennon can win or lose right now and if he keeps mistakes to a minimum he’ll still be considered a hero.
You can bet that if the Bucs had a reaso to win still your stress would be higher.
The proof is in the pudding. Do you consider this week a MUST win against the Lions? If not, that’s why the stress is lower.

Buc bonsai plus 9 to u because if I woulda said it is b called a freeminite even though I said nothing of free I just state the facts a spade is a spade show me against a team that isn’t worst then us. ….n there’s only like 2 – 3 teams tops thats worse then us n the just beat 2. Stafford week bring this coach an all his followers aka YALL that is not hard to look great Against garbage we’ll have a top 3 pick put it on the books I said it!!!

Hard to look aggressive when running stunts, curls and dropping DL into coverage in 2nd half against falcons that almost let them back into the game. If something is working, you stay with it

So now, its the Minn coaching staff that is mishandeling Freeman….poor guy just can’t catch a break. Its a good thing that he is a free agent at the end of this season so he can finally hook up with coaches that will use him properly…or is it his Doctors?
Let me see…is it Ritalin or Adderall….Prozac or Immodium…
If Josh could just get his meds straightened out….then he would be just fine!!!

Bonzai, wth dude? Free is gone so get off his nuts already. And at this point, a win is still a win!!!!! We have some tough games ahead and I hope WE DO keep winning. That means some changes made are working and finally things are coming together. Im fine if we dont have a top 10 draft pick IF, BIG IF, we keep the current play calling in tact!
If we can win some of the rest of this tough schedule, that means less attention on key positions like QB and OT. We can focus on WR and maybe another CB!

Wow, haven’t said much of late about your football IQ, but it amounts to about as much as a Vince Young Wunderlic score.
No wins means Schiano goes packing back to college and that leaves Glennon adrift.
There is immense pressure on these two, Dom and many other players as well.

BucNasty…Miami is 5-5 and in the playoff hunt. They are far from worse than “us”.
Bonzai…damn I don’t even like bringing up this a-holes name anymore but you mention how Freeman only had “ONE” pick for the Vikings. Yet you fail to mention how all of his balls were all over the map in that game too. Many of them sailing over the receiver’s heads. It was actually the worst game I’ve ever seen Freeman play. Please tell me your not STILL making excuses for a guy that is no longer on our team.

MadMax…yep, I’m definitely for closing out the season with as many wins as possible. I’m not in the “a win is a loss crowd.” Screw the damn draft. This coaching staff still has 6 more games to prove to us that they are worthy as far as I’m concerned. This is a banged up team, and if they do win a few down the stretch, it will say a lot about the team and the coaches.
Also Max, I keep seeing fans clamoring for Clowney on these threads. Since your a S. Carolina fan. Can you please remind us why you said Clowney would be a waste of a pick?

@87, I never said he would be a waste of a pick….just not top 10 to me (for us). Its the way he started this year, plus the way he cant handle heat too well. But Ive noticed a change the last 3 games….he’s back to his old self. Maybe thats what they mean by “football shape” and it took him a while to get back in it. We’ll see vs. Clemson with a new record on the line (5 in a row for the 1st time if we win).
At his size and the speed of his get off, I can understand why he gets winded so quickly. But the colder it is the better he seems to play….all in all thats understandable. But no, he wouldnt be a waste of a pick if we turn out to be solid in areas I thought we were most weak in. He’ll still probably be a top 5 though, especially if he keeps looking the way he has the last 3 games.

1) Skip the stunts on d-line
2) run the ball down their throats
3) Play Action
