There Is No QB Controversy
November 18th, 2013Sometimes, words come back to haunt you. No one knows this better than Bucs commander Greg Schiano. In a lighthearted moment at One Bucs Palace today during his daily press briefing, Schiano nearly walked into a thicket he never completely got himself out of last year.
Flash back to the day after the final game of the 2012 season, when Schiano was explaining how he firmly believes competition at every position is good and healthy and when asked about then-franchise quarterback, leaky, sleepy Josh Freeman, Schiano, perhaps frustrated at missing the playoffs and not thinking clearly, perhaps suffering from jetlag, did not back away from his statement. That opened to door for a quarterback controversy.
Schiano, best as he tried, could not shake himself from that statement until the day that Schiano benched the insolent, selfish Freeman.
Schiano nearly crossed the same path today when he caught himself in the nick of time. Schiano was in the midst of praising players like defensive lineman Will Gholston for working hard, buying into the program and earning his playing time through competition when Schiano was quickly asked if there was competion for current starting quarterback Mike Glennon’s job.
“We’re not asking that question,” Schiano retorted, breaking out into a laugh. “Isn’t that the question that got me in trouble last winter? I thought [the quarterback question Monday] was a set up?”
So yes, Mr. Glennon, your seat is safe. You are the Bucs starting quarterback, so long as you don’t develop a case of sleep apnea.

F U Freeman you damn con artist.
November 18th, 2013 at 8:51 pm
We may have a RB controversy next year….what a great thing to have…..3 cheap great RBs…..then add Demps & Leonard.
We need some 2 back sets…..
We will probably end up trading one of them….

Oh jeez. Leaky, sleepy, insolent, AND selfish? Sounds like somebody REALLY doesn’t like Josh Freeman. In all seriousness though, Joe, I’m not trying to say I wish Freeman was still a Buc, but when was it ever proved that Freeman leaked information about himself?
November 18th, 2013 at 9:18 pm
Biggest Buc winner= Josh Freeman.
Name me another Buc who can help 2 teams keep out of the playoffs and still make 11 million plus dollars this year!!!
November 18th, 2013 at 9:25 pm
Helluva an article, Joe, I look forward to you discussing Freeman’s exact title with the Big-Darrell620 on Weds.
November 18th, 2013 at 9:28 pm
P’cola Buc,
Freeman is making 14m on the year.
Hat’s off to his agent.
Too bad we couldn’t trade him. Even the narrow skilled LGB could get us compesation.
Freewee is gone, and in comes Napoleon Glennonite. This kid is our QB. He is going to win the Freemanites over.
November 18th, 2013 at 9:33 pm
Glennon is our QB joe and others get over it get behind the kid and our coach

Still would like a little QB competition next year and draft a QB. I guess it all depends where the Bucs end up picking in the draft. But I agree Kid Glennon has done all that’s being asked of him as a rookie. Looks poised for a rookie on there. It’s his smarts and learning potential I feel is his greatest asset.
November 18th, 2013 at 9:39 pm
Glennon is succeeding with essentially no TE….and Underwood as our # 2 WR…..amazing…
November 18th, 2013 at 9:45 pm
@TBBF – And a 4th string runningback
November 18th, 2013 at 10:02 pm
People should get over freeman. He’s gone. Never ever ever ever ever ever coming back. No way no how. Glennons got this. And the dude is the best we have ever had so far. I’m a former freeman homo. And I’m saying Glennons our future. 137.5 QB rating this week which broke the previous buc QB rating that he himself set.
November 18th, 2013 at 10:05 pm
No, Joe didn’t bash Glennon. Joe said he had no confidence that Glennon would/could become a franchise QB, a necessity in a division with Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and Cam Newton. Joe actually had an argument with Duemig on the air defending Glennon two weeks ago. Joe still feels that way but hopes Glennon can continue to surprise. You don’t get to make up stuff about Joe in the comments section here. Sorry. House rule. –Joe

Fans being critical of Glennon and his long ball need to shut up. He’s not an Andrew Luck or Kaepernick (don’t care if I spelled the name correctly), he did not come out of college with crazy accolades. He’s doing a damn good job for a rookie that was thrust into this sh*t storm as far as I’m concerned. He threw the long ball extremely well in college. It could just be a timing thing or rhythm that he needs to get down. Who’s to say that he can’t get it down? Not me that’s for sure. It’s still TOO early to tell as far as I’m concerned. Give the kid a f’ing break. Stop being so damn critical and relax a little bit and enjoy the fact that he is ONLY a rookie. The kid is living his dream right now and I hope he continues to get better.

At this rate Goodell will get run out by the union or cause some kind of player strike to take place.
The players can’t play, Goodell should tread lightly.
November 18th, 2013 at 10:09 pm
Damn sorry joe that was supposed to be on the Goldson thread.
November 18th, 2013 at 10:10 pm
Where is Shaun King on this????
“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”
November 18th, 2013 at 10:12 pm
@blackmagic00
You are right!!!
Freeman is history, gone, departed, terminated, through, finished, vanished, elsewhere, SYONARA, ADIOS, AU-REVOIR, Auf WIEDERSHEN, CHEERIO, ADJO, ANTIO, DO SVIDANIYA, HASTA LA VISTA, BYE-BYE…. SO LONG Of course, Schiano would say CAIO!!!
November 18th, 2013 at 10:44 pm
Schiano, best as he tried, could not shake himself from that statement until the day that Schiano benched the insolent, selfish Freeman.
—————————————————————————————-
Schiano was insolent and childish in how he handled the Freeman situation. If Glennon was better than Freeman when camp began, he would have beat him out in camp just like another 3rd round pick in Seattle beat out a highly paid FA QB. The Bucs have won 2 straight but too little too late. Hopefully, there will be a new coach next year.

Being a season ticket holder, I am skeptical of Glennon being a long term franchise QB and speaking for myself, I won’t shut up; his deep ball isn’t accurate. The deep balls he throws are jump balls.

Dude get over it. Management had a lot of say in playing josh freeman.schiano never liked what he saw and was right on the nose. Glennon has been down right impressive and best rookie qb of the class. Reminds me a lot of Matt Ryan with a stronger arm.
I really would love to hear schiano’s opinion on josh freeman off the record. I can only imagine the swearing that will take place.
November 18th, 2013 at 11:27 pm
What do you mean that he was insolent? I know what it says in the dictionary, but could you give some examples, PLEASE?
Maybe you should question Schiano having security move Freeman from his private suite.
What a sorry franchise. Lot of empty seats again vs Falcons.
November 18th, 2013 at 11:36 pm
BucsFan68 …being a season ticket holder myself. I’m telling you to give a ROOKIE a break, let him become better each week and not expect the second coming of Joe Montana from a rookie. Many MANY QB’s throw jump balls. Exactly who is the “long term answer” at QB then for you? Another rookie coming out of the draft next year? Yah I sure hope that pans out for our team, but I don’t see any slam dunk QB coming out. Yeah quality prospects in the draft, but no slam dunk. So Mr. Long Term Answer Season Ticket Holder? Who could be the long term answer at QB for the Bucs?
November 18th, 2013 at 11:42 pm
“The deep balls he throws are jump balls.”
And Freeman’s were what exactly? Our WRs aren’t fast enough to get separation down the field most of the time, so deep balls are essentially passes thrown up to give them a chance to make a play. Being that they’re all tall receivers, that’s what they’re best at. One day maybe we’ll have someone here who can simply outrun a CB.

oldfart44…what a sorry fan base more like it. Last seasons Eagles-Bucs game had more Eagles fans than Buc fans at the game and the Bucs were still in the playoff hunt, the Eagles had 2 wins at the time. Our fan base is pathetic. In 2010 when the team was 10-6 the stadium was 1/2 full most of the time anyways. It’s the fan base man. The record might help a little, but not really. Also if the Glazers are just going to get the game on TV for us, like the Rays have. Why bother going to the game? Our fan base sucks ass and so does the Rays fan base. Sad but true.

@mvermulm outrun & CATCH the ball! Lol

Chris… your damn right management had a helluva lot of say in Josh Freeman starting the season. SOME people tend to think that everything falls on the coach and he makes EVERY and ALL decisions regarding the team. That is so far from the truth it’s not even funny.
November 18th, 2013 at 11:57 pm
People and fan bases always crack me up, watch he ticket once in a while. Check out the steelers game yesterday. I’ve had season tix since 98, they have had plenty of Bucs fans in the seats over the years. More eagles fans then Bucs fans:)
November 18th, 2013 at 11:59 pm
Wow we have a blowout win against a fellow South team, our rookie QB goes 20 completions out of 23 throws and 2 touch downs with Zero interceptions. And some so called “fans” can’t get our previous QB off of this site. I like what I have seen from our rookie QB is it perfect no, he did have 3 missed completions. I am awaiting the Bring back Freeman mob to start up. Move on….
November 19th, 2013 at 12:11 am
To be fair, the Rays stadium is in a trashed area in St. Pete across the bay. I’d still go to their games because you could get outfield seats for $20 a piece, and nosebleed seats for $12. Back when I lived in Tampa, I was about 10 miles from the Ray Jay, going to games was a lot easier, just more expensive, lol.
November 19th, 2013 at 12:26 am
Well it costs me about 18 bucks in gas and 15 bucks in parking and I still go to the games. I’m not exactly rich either. Somewhere between poor and middle class. I saw entire sections empty yesterday and I don’t blame the fans for this season either, especially when the Glazers put the game on TV for them.
November 19th, 2013 at 1:26 am
Buc1987:
You are right about the fans, and I am one of them, even though I’m Canadian. I bitch a lot because I care. I took me a long time to recover from Dungy getting fired.
Other problems I see down the road are what FAs want to play for him. The reputation around the league is not good. Was he not voted the coach that would be the worst to play for?
I am happy for the players, but I don’t really believe they are playing for him, but rather for themselves.
The Bucs have a superb core, in my opinion, but we need some like a Bill Polian, or Mike Holmgren to lead the way.
Glennon had many completions yesterday but most were to Jackson, and the remainder were like dumpoffs to Leonard. I don’t blame the kid, but I would wager that he is under strict orders from that defensive genius not to screw up.
I could go on and on, but he must go; also probably take Dominik with him. Some of the assistants would be worth keeping like Byner, who is doing a bang up job with the backs. Unfortunately, new coaches tend to bring their people in.

I understand backing Glennon as he has been nothing short solid this season. With that being said I do want the Bucs to go out and get a more competitent backup then Orlolphsky (apologize for the spelling), but I want to be confident in the backups ability to play if Glennon is unable to play.
