Is Mike Glennon The Franchise QB?
November 17th, 2013Now Joe understands Mike Glennon starting this year. After sleepy, leaky Josh Freeman was thrown off the team, Glennon began a near-season long rehearsal to help the Bucs decide if he is the franchise quarterback (that Freeman turned out not to be) or if the Bucs should select a quarterback with a top-five pick in next spring’s draft.
Well, after the Bucs handily beat the Dixie Chicks today, it is becoming less and less likely the Bucs will have a top-five pick, and more and more likely Glennon will be barking signals in Tampa next year.
Glennon did his best impersonation of Florida State phenom Jameis Winston. The Seminoles (redshirt) quarterback has wowed the nation with his uncanny accuracy and Glennon seemed to channel his inner-Winston by coming close to pitching a perfect game.
Glennon completed a gaudy 20 passes in 23 attempts for 231 yards and two touchdowns.
If the Bucs keep on winning, Joe is pretty sure of two things: 1) Bucs commander Greg Schiano will be granted a mulligan and be retained for 2014; and, 2) Drafting Johnny Football or hoping to tank in 2014 for Winston will be out of the question as Glennon will be your Bucs’ starting quarterback.
As long as Schiano is with the Bucs, Glennon is his guy. It’s just that simple.

For Glennon, the deep balls aren’t great but the short and intermediate passes that move the chains are spot on. I will certainly take that at this time. I feel a lot better about teaching a guy to put the ball out there a little more on deep passes than trying to get him to lead recievers over the middle of the field.
Glennon’s decision making is what leads me to believe that he can be the man.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:06 pm
Glennon looks very good….he manages the game well….makes few mistakes and is deadly accurate with his short passes.
If we win a few more…we won’t get a shot at the top two or three QBs…,.so we should take the best player available or trade down and pick up another 2nd round pick. There will be a really good QB available at the top of round 2 like Mettenberger, Murray or McCarron….we should still draft a QB for backup and competiton for Glennon.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:07 pm
I’m sold. He’s pretty good now, but he could blossom into something great if given more weapons and protected consistently. Schiano said he was a cerebral player and he’s proven so.
all the greats you think of now…Manning, Tom. They considered coaches on the field and that’s why they’re so scary. Glennon is a whiz and has a hell of an arm. As he gains confidence, and hopefully stick to his smart decision making…we’re going to see this kid make some of those window throws that make you just smile.
we got rid of the cannon with NO touch and NO cerebral advantage, and picked us up a younger kid with the same cannon but with the brains to boot. I’m an official Glennon whateveryoucallit.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:07 pm
Some Qb’s ( like Brady ) did not start their careers throwing 40 yard bombs, Arm strength and tighter spirals can be worked on in the off-season, ( something this QB will do, not like past Qb’s that like to “hang out” all off-season.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:10 pm
Actually Glennon was “Glennon-like” which is a good thing. I guess accepting Glennon as a good pick and a good, not “serviceable” QB violates a BD rule. You guys will do anything to bash Schiano.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:11 pm
No No No! The ATL isn’t the team they have been in years past, so good job to Glennon for beating up on a sub par team. Also look at how many attempts he had, 23! Now go back and check how much they had Freeman put the ball in the air at the start of the season. He would have 40-45 attempts almost every week. And Freeman had Doug Martin in the backfield! Maybe if this coaching staff would have figured out what this teams strengths were (running the ball and defense) then Freeman would of have been 3-0 out of the gate and nobody would of second guessed his franchise status. I’m not saying I’m a Freeman man, he wasn’t going to bring us a championship and neither will Glennon. Fire Shiano, get a real QB in the draft and lets see what this team can do in 2014.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:29 pm
Paul, you are such a moron. What is a “real” QB? Glennon is putting up better numbers than Luck and RGIII. You are the type of fan that doesn’t think Glennon is a “real” QB because you never heard his name prior to our drafting him in the 3rd round.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:33 pm
I’m impressed with Glennon; he’s having a great rookie season. But it would be hard to pass on Manziel. Really, it would.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:35 pm
The reason why freeman was “forced” to pass so many times this year is teams loaded the box and dared him to beat them with short throws and good decisions. That is not on Schiano. That is squarely on freeman. He had a job to do and he failed. Paul, do you remember how many times Martin ran into 8 men fronts? I surely do.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:36 pm
Kills you to say Glennon looked “Glennon-like” and admit he was a good pick and more than a “serviceable” QB doesn’t it? Anything to bash Schiano and sniff after Dog. Sad.
He’s had a rating over 100 2 of the last 3 weeks. Kid was a steal.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:39 pm
Wake up Freemanites, a “franchise” QB is devolping.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:53 pm
We shall see in the next few weeks.
November 17th, 2013 at 7:53 pm
Glennon is the second coming of Brad Johnson.
November 17th, 2013 at 8:13 pm
On the contrary. If Glennon impressed Joe as the next Matty Ice or Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees, Joe would write that.
November 17th, 2013 at 8:36 pm
The fact a rookie has only 1 interception is very impressive. If the Bucs can draft a good pass rusher, that would do wonders for the team all the way around.
November 17th, 2013 at 8:37 pm
Glennon continues to get better. If he continues to get better, I don’t want the Bucs to go anywhere near a QB in the draft. No wa,y no how, not at all. First round QB’s are such a risk and then comes the learning they have to do, so no thanks.
I’m on the Glennon bandwagon. I’m telling you Buc fans if Schiano pulls out 6 wins with this current roster, the Glazers are going to keep. I have a funny feeling they might win 6. Win 7 and Schiano staying is a slam dunk, especially since his contract is guaranteed.
What a GREAT game today in all 3 phases, defense (outstanding), offense (phenomenal) special teams (special).
Does this look like a team that hates their coach to you? I say NOT EVEN close!
November 17th, 2013 at 8:45 pm
How good is the rookie QB Glennon? Brad Johnson was old, Glennon looks better. Johnson was the most notable of recent Buc QB’s, based on the SB win. A young Glennon would top him every time.
November 17th, 2013 at 8:47 pm
in a division with brees. ryan, and cam…….this dude will not get it done…….he is a statue…….we need a dual threat………bridgewater and mariota are better than glennon……..id really like to either get cutler, big ben, or if we are happy with glennon…….at least get matt schaubb………..I am not sold……..he misses alot of open guys to throw a 5 yard pass……..master of the checkdown is what i see
November 17th, 2013 at 8:48 pm
Bullcrap If he didn’t luckily get a couple long balls. He would of had 100 yds passing again. He holds the ball too long and the 15-18 yard pass is just not in his arsenal. If we get in a shootout or need a 2 minute 60yard drive he just can’t do it. He is a good game manager and 2yd passer but thats not gonna get you to the playoff’s. If we can get Johnny Football we better take him.
PS Fire Muschamp
November 17th, 2013 at 8:48 pm
I just really dont like the dude
November 17th, 2013 at 8:49 pm
with glennon………i see five years of 6-10 football……..has no wow factor
November 17th, 2013 at 8:50 pm
Bucs 1987
AMEN many other needs,
November 17th, 2013 at 8:53 pm
i also really hate shiano…………the bucs are still a laughing stock…….lets cut the b.s. we beat a garbage miami team during its crazy time and beat a garbage falcons team with no weapons……..give ryan jones and a healthy white and this kid looks like garbage………………I WANT LOVIE……..PROVEN, KNOWS WHAT HES DOIN…….We would have a better def with him, i dont like our offensive philosophy
November 17th, 2013 at 8:54 pm
look with all this talent……2-8 is unacceptable, Shiano is garbage
November 17th, 2013 at 8:56 pm
if you guys are happy with glennon/shiano, then you are happy with mediocrity………perineal 4th place finsher
November 17th, 2013 at 9:01 pm
@ scott hunter
After that first post wanting Cutler or Schaub as your arguement against mediocrity???….I really just don’t even know what to tell you.
Don’t waste any more time posting would be my advice.
November 17th, 2013 at 9:08 pm
Scott Hunter I’m telling you right now if Schiano wins 6 games, he’s staying and so is Glennon.
November 17th, 2013 at 9:13 pm
Scott Hunter…currently they are at 2-8. So with this 2-8 team what does “all this talent” mean. Who is all this talent? Revis, Goldson,GMC, David, VJax and then who else? Am I forgetting anyone else? A rookie QB, a RB that was picked up off the street in Rainey, no Mike Williams, no Carl Nicks, no Doug Martin. WTH do you mean by “all this talent”. Schiano currently is winning with LESS talent.
November 17th, 2013 at 9:16 pm
Did everyone forget that Glennon just outplayed Matt Ryan, you know, an elite QB that took his team to the playoffs in 4 of his 5 seasons. Teams would kill for a QB like Ryan, and yet Glennon performed better than Ryan today, and last week, and the week before that, and you are all suggesting that we need a “real QB”. Does Atlanta need a “real QB” as well?
November 17th, 2013 at 9:25 pm
If he can continue to hit on his deep balls, I’ll be sold on him as our starter for next year. The guy has already proven he can hit the short and intermediate routes, he rarely turns the ball over, he has a nice quick release, a strong arm, he spreads the ball around to different receivers…… we might have something brewing in Tampa Bay.
November 17th, 2013 at 9:35 pm
Lets all just cool our jets a bit before we start celebrating Mike Glennon and the Bucs’ “success”.
Last week, they faced a team that’s been facing a negative media whirlwind, and a defense that wasn’t there all game. This week, they faced a Falcons team with one of the worst defenses in the NFL.
He’s a rookie, and for him to be doing well is quite a feat, but I really really think it’s not very appropriate to celebrate anything right now expect the fact that the Bucs won’t be going 0-16 this season.
They have a pretty winnable game against the Bills next week, before they face an actual winning NFL team in the 49ers.
Otherwise, I’m still of the opinion that Glennon is no more than the very solid backup that every team needs. What worries me the most is him performing too well, leading to a draft without going for a good QB, and then faltering the next season.
November 17th, 2013 at 9:38 pm
*correction
Not next week with the Bucs facing the Bills. Was mislead to believe this was the case by someone without actually checking.
November 17th, 2013 at 9:45 pm
@ david
Put the win-loss record aside then and just focus on the progress. He has one viable recieving threat and a rb that wasn’t on the team three weeks ago. This is still obviously a small example size but at the very least, in my opinion, it isn’t a forgone conclusion that we will us a top pick on a qb at this point. Glennon, no matter what some still think, is absolutely a starting caliber NFL qb.
November 17th, 2013 at 9:52 pm
Lions next week and Panthers after that. Bills and 49ers in weeks 14 & 15
November 17th, 2013 at 9:57 pm
Odd that people are already dismissing Glennon as a career backup when so far all he’s done is prove that he’s having a solid rookie season. The knock was it wasn’t translating to wins, well he’s got two now and probably will get a few more before the season is over. Why not forget that he’s a 3rd round pick or that he’s Schiano’s guy, or that some people think he’s goofy looking and instead give the guy a chance to play out the season before deciding what kind of QB he’s going to be.
November 17th, 2013 at 10:19 pm
Give him a chance to prove that he can be our franchise Qb. Support him.
need D line in the worst way….. and a quality TE in free agent.
November 17th, 2013 at 10:26 pm
@Jordan….Excellent point. Wow a Bucs fan with brains on these boards. I can’t believe my eyes.
November 17th, 2013 at 10:29 pm
Hey Couch Fan….the Bucs are “winnin with Glennon”
November 17th, 2013 at 10:51 pm
Glennon and Schiano back!?!!?
Yeah, I’m okay with that.
Glennon has tremendous arm on intermidiate passes. He’s ok on long balls. Wish that.
But all these “super hyped, Super Atheletic young QBs aren’t winning.
I’ll take old school intelligence and decision making.
And Glennon is showing that!
Schiano did great things with cleaning out the Scumbags. He instilled a new work ethic! I wanted him to succeed. He’s my kinda Guy.
But his schemes and Ego got in the way- his stubbornness was killing us.
Last 3 weeks- it’s like he’s had an epiphany.
We have played really smart football last two weeks.
Today was just fun football!! When was the last time watching a Bucs Offense was Fun??
Yeah- I’m ok with seeing them Back
November 17th, 2013 at 11:01 pm
Take care of Football and be smart when u throw it…..MG will be fine.
November 17th, 2013 at 11:05 pm
Atlanta defense is same as last year it’s the offense that is injured. Glennon actually had Matty ice numbers today. A reverse of roles for QB.
STOP TALK ABOUT ARRON MURRY THE KID IS AVERAGE AT BEST , just cause he is from tampa does not make him great. He isn’t even great in college.
GO BUCS
November 18th, 2013 at 7:57 am
Glennon could very well be the guy, time and the rest of the season will tell. I say stick with him and build around him. Get the best player available in the draft and forget Johnny Football. How many Heisman winning QB’s are playing great football in the NFL right now?
November 18th, 2013 at 8:22 am
Capt. Tim, great point about the dual-threat QBs. None of them are doing anything special in the NFL right now, not even Kap. The fact is, you have to be able to throw the ball around the field, and that is something Glennon can certainly do (and looks to be improving on as well). Glennon will be a solid starter, but needs competition from either a mid-rd pick next season or a vet QB (I vote for the latter personally). If we win a couple more games and end up around the 10-15 range, I want Ebron to help Glennon out in the middle of the field.
November 18th, 2013 at 9:30 am
Glennon yesterday, 20-23 with an 87% completion rate. Hmm, that’s a little better than the 47% we were accustomed to seeing.
Not a flashy guy by any means, but there were a few instances where Glennon made the smart decision by taking a coverage sack or throwing it away.
The guy is making a case for himself.
