So what do the Bucs have in Mike Glennon? Is it enough to not draft Johnny Manziel a quarterback in the first round of the 2014 draft?
Outside of the future of the New Schiano Order, that’s the biggest question that will be answered before the end of 2013.
Glennon has exceeded expectations as a third-round pick dropped into a mess of a situation as a starter. Glennon still has much to prove, but he keeps impressing respected analysts. Speaking on Fan Interference on WHFS-FM 98.7 this week, NFL Films senior producer/noted guru Greg Cosell compared Glennon to one of the game’s best quarterbacks.
“I think he has similar attributes to Matt Ryan,” Cosell said. “Whether they fully develop within the context of a team, don’t forget someone like Matt Ryan for the first four years of his career played in an offense that was run based, that ran very, very effectively. People lose sight of why players are effective. And I like Matt Ryan a lot, but he was in an offense in the first four years of his career that was a run-first offense.
“So you have to see what else [the Bucs] will bring to the table offensively. If [Glennon] is in a situation where in order to score points he’s going to have to throw it 40 times a game, you’re going to put him under duress that he probably can’t handle at this point in his career.”
Glennon’s got seven games to prove himself. If he can’t win a chunk of games, his coach will be fired and Glennon will become a backup. That’s very clear to Joe.
However, the bigger question is what happens if Glennon and Schiano survive in 2014. Would the Bucs draft a quarterback anyway, if the right one was in their lap?

If Schiano stays, then they draft Clowney or the best defensive lineman available. Why would Schiano draft another QB? He’s already married to Glennon

I say they do draft a QB. It’s too important a position to not draft one. Add to that the anticipated quality of the draft for the QB position and yes, you draft a QB.

these big dummies… he set an NFL record for most passing attempt… what crack are these guys smoking, do they even watch his film before making these kind of uneducated comments?! His first 4 games he had 40+ attempts! He threw for 6 TDs and 3 ints in that span, 2 picks were in the first game. He can handle pressure fine.

If Glennon & Schiano survive, it will be because they win a few games…therefore we won’t pick in the top 3…..we should draft the best player available or trade down and pick up another 2nd round pick…..we still should take a QB…but likely in the top of the second round….Like Mettenberger, Murray or McCarron….
That would provide some stiff competiton at QB and let the best man win…..we would also then have a good backup.

Absolutely not. Don’t waste your time or money on another QB. Glennon is the real deal. Work on the O-line or trade down and collect draft picks. We have a franchise QB in Glennon, now protect him.

I agree about Manziel not being good enough for the NFL or the Bucs taking a shot at him. The Buc braintrust let Schiano take Glennon and boot the departed QB. I’m on board with Glennon and Schiano finishing the season, so are the Glazers.

Tampabaybucsfans Says is spot on with his draft comment. The biggest “if” is if Glennon is able to show well the rest of the year. If he does, it is still important to draft a solid QB who provides daily competition, ability to step in and doesn’t get a “must play me now” contract.

At 5-11, which looks possible with how this team has improved, we won’t be in position anyway to draft a top QB. Leave that to the Jags.

If Glennon and Schiano perform well enough, they’ll be back. And we’ll be in great shape in the draft, while the QB desperate teams eat up picks in qbs we’ll have pick of the best offensive lineman or wide receiver or def lineman to not need a QB in this QB heavy draft would be a great blessing.

I hope Glennon plays well enough to lock down the Qb position for us but I’m terrified that it will save Schiano’s job. If Schiano stays I hope he has the balls to do some major soul searching and re-evaluate the quality of schemes he’s running and if they’re really taking advantage of the talents on this roster.
Glennon I believe is a keeper and worth investing some more time into. This needs to be a skill player draft for us. We need a ton more speed on the outside and we need at least one more startable CB.

I’ve already lost hope in this team/franchise. If Schiano stays I will finally cut the cord and move on. Letting Schiano ruin another season would be a terrible waste of money and talent.
If one of the top 3 QB’s is available you’ve got to take them – Glennon hasn’t done enough to establish himself as “the man” – he’s done ok so far but in the NFL competition is key.

Cut the cord and move on? You’re either a Bucs fan or you’re not, and the record shouldn’t matter. It’s one thing to not watch the games because they’re too depressing. It’s another thing to not be a fan any more. I think there’s a big difference. If you decide not to be a fan any more because of a bad record, you weren’t a fan to begin with.

I think Glennon is doing great so far. Kid makes good decisions for the most part and he can zip it when he needs to. Look at what he has around him right now. Aside from V-Jax we have a receiving corp made of castoffs from other teams. If we draft a deep threat receiver and Tim Wright continues to develop as a TE and Mike Williams comes back healthy next year…then he’ll have some weapons. We have to be able to make teams pay for putting double coverage on V-Jax.

I wouldn’t draft a 1st round QB just to avoid the media frenzy that occurs when a starting QB is supposedly “competing” for the starting job. Do we really want to go through that again? Competition for the position is great, but I don’t want Glennon to have to put up with the media waiting for a poor performance so Bridgewater or Manziel can start. Remember that we will have 2 picks within the top 40 and 2 picks in the last 32. We are going to have to land 2 starters with those first two picks.
