Bucs Scrambling For A New Running Back
November 12th, 2013It’s extra tough sledding when you lose a player at a key position during Monday Night Football. There’s less time to find a replacement for the weekend.
Emerging running back star Mike James broke his ankle last night, and now the Bucs need a third running back fast. Don’t think that’s an important position? Consider the Bucs’ No. 3 back last night, Bobby Rainey, an average Joe a couple of weeks ago, scored the game-winning touchdown against the Dolphins and set up the score with a breakaway run.
Throw in the fact that Brian Leonard is a little banged up and is coming off the most carries of his career in one game (20), and the Bucs never hand off to their fullbacks, the Bucs are scrambling. They’ve put three running backs on injured reserve in the past week.
Look for a signing no later than tomorrow. If the Bucs are looking for a veteran, former Buccaneer Man D.J. Ware and Ryan Torian recently had tryouts for the Giants.
As for Rainey, Joe has learned the Bucs like him in all phases: running, catching and returning. But given his new role, Joe doesn’t look for him to be doin much return work.

I am sure there is a practice squad guy out there, worthy of our vacancy.
Anyone have any intriguing options/ideas?

Is Michael Smith hurt? The guy is basically the same size as Bobby Rainey. He has been just sitting on the roster for 2 years. Either use him now when you reaaly need him or cut him and get someone else. If they are comfortable using him at a time of need on a 1-8 football team then they are never going to use him.

if the bucs are able to get someone off another team’s practice squad, there is Daniel Herron. I remember watching him play for Ohio State and he was a pretty good RB. just a suggestion.

What happened to the other Rainey? The talented knucklehead from the Steelers Chris Rainey – maybe he’s grown up some. Probably not a Buccaneer man, but he’s a pretty good receiver and nearly as fast as Demps. May not be Schiano’s cup of tea, but when you’re trying to save your job, who knows!

How about Michael Turner? He didn’t look too good last year, but we would get the added benefit of learning some secret info about the Falcons for our game on Sunday.

Kerwynn Williams (Per Wiki)

Williams attended Utah State University between 2009 and 2012. He spent most of his first three seasons and as a reserve and backup running back. Following the departure of Robert Turbin, he became the starting running back for his senior season. He rushed for 1,512 yards on 218 carries (6.9 ypc) and 15 touchdowns, and caught 45 passes for 697 yards and five touchdowns, earning him first team All-WAC honors.
For his career, he accumulated 2,505 rushing yards on 380 carries (6.6 ypc) and 22 touchdowns, and caught 64 passes for 870 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was an established kick returner early in his career, and, Williams would finish his career accumulating 3,408 kick return yards, which ranks first all time in school history, as well as WAC history. He also recorded 6,928 all purpose yards in his career, breaking the old record of 6,659 set by Terance Mathis of New Mexico (1985-1989)

Michael Turner is interesting…….
Hard to believe he is still out there…..I suppose there must be a reason.
Joseph Addai…..always liked that guy…..might be worth kickin the tires on both of these guys.

Wow what a move by the “rock star” trading away Blount for a 7th round pick.
Nah we won’t need Legarret………
IDIOT!
November 12th, 2013 at 7:33 pm
Mr Lucky, I do believe that we traded up into the 6th round using that 7th round pick we acquired from NE for Blount. So James was effectively Blount’s replacement. Considering what Mike James was able to do as our featured RB, I would say it was a good move. Only an idiot would whine about the Bucs not carrying 6 RBs at all times in case our 1st and 2nd stringers get injured at the same time. Is the Packers GM an idiot because he didn’t carry 2 extra QBs to backup Rodgers and Wallace?

Chris Rainey is a game breaker… A one cut and up the field FAST kind of runner. Best choice I see on that list. Ringer is a tough back, and most likely a “schiano guy”.

IMO, I think D. Herron would be a good pick up. Looked really good in preseason. Oh and by the way don’t forget we cut Peyton Hillis. Another great move Dum.
