Glennon Leading Beyond Expectations

At the rate Glennon is progressing, many Bucs fans might wonder whether drafting a QB is the right call after the season.
Spending time around the Bucs locker room and One Buc Palace today, Joe gets the distinct feeling there’s a lot of confidence building in Mike Glennon, from coaches to players to Glennon himself.
Glennon carries himself more like he’s “the man.”
Donald Penn said Glennon has become such a leader that it’s freed up team captains to focus on other areas.
“Oh, Mike’s playing his butt off. I’m really proud of Mike, man. You know, Mike’s really shown the football world he’s a sleeper. And he’s coming out and doing very good things. You know one thing you guys don’t know, he’s leading us. He’s leading us,” Penn said. “He’s pumping us up. I think in between almost every series he comes down and is chatting with the offensive line. You know, getting us going. His drive and his determination to want to win, I mean you can see it in him, you know, while we’re playing. And I think that really rubs off on us. I think he’s doing a great job of commanding the offense. And my hat’s really to him.”
On Glennon’s leadership, Penn said it’s a huge bonus from a rookie.
“This is all extra. This is great. You know, I think something we needed,” Penn said. “Now I can step back and focus on my game because Mike’s taking some of the leadership role on the offense. I think Vincent can step back. I think Davin. We can all step back and start focusing on our game more because Mike’s doing what a quarterback is supposed to be doing. He’s taking that leadership and I think it’s helping us.”
What do the Bucs really have in Glennon? Bucs fans surely will find out through the second half of the season. But there are good reviews for No. 8. Before Glennon’s solid performance in Seattle, Ron Jaworski rated him the 22nd best QB in the NFL.
With Mike James exploding and the offensive line gelling, Glennon’s got a shot to make a lot of Bucs fans wonder whether drafting a QB next season is the right move.

He showed a lot of grit in the Seattle game. If he’s successful down the stretch I see no reason to gamble away a 1st rounder on a qb. Theres no such thing as a “sure thing” when it comes to first round quarterbacks. I also think if he’s successful down the stretch, Schiano might be returning in 2014, seeing as he handpicked Glennon.

He’s more of a WCO type of QB, but I like how he’s playing.
If we don’t draft a QB, I REALLY like Sammy Watkins. I know we have other needs, but that dude is uber talented.

I’m willing to give him a shot already. If he doesn’t pan out, then start him in 2014 and Waste it for Winston in the 2015 draft. Unproven rookies is a risk and a big 1st rnd gamble. Famous Jameis on the other hand is special and will be ready to start on day 1 in the NFL. Anyone seen the footage on Jameis in the locker room and the sidelines. The guy is straight up everything you could ask for in a QB.
Oh one can dream, so let me dream.
Wow what a difference in leadership from the Joshua tree. Josh used to just mope back to the sidelines, sit there and sulk.

Wouldn’t that just be sweet F*cking titts if we didn’t have to draft a qb in the first round next year? It’ll almost be like getting an extra free first rounder. He’s got 8 games to get that deep ball going and I for one think he can do it.

I read into Penn’s comments that Freeman wasn’t showing leadership from the QB position earlier in the year….
As for Glennon next year….we have the luxury of making that decision after the season….after we learn what pick we have…after we have or don’t have a new coach….no need to get into lengthly debates about it now.
If we keep Glennon….we should pick up a seasoned Veteran as a backup so that Glennon will have additional support with his development.
Shaun King would be great as his QB coach!!!

Maybe that’s why the guys played so dam hard and good against the Seahawks. Maybe the locker room was semi divided about Freeman, and Glennon’s awesomeness won over the locker room Freemanites, and now everyone is on board and on the same page. Maybe, just maybe the turn around is here. WATCH OUT NFL!! Glennon’s got some Buc’n games to win yet this year!

It seems like when Glennon has time to throw and a “DECENT” run game, he’s pretty good at spreading the ball around.
He doesn’t bounce passes like Josh.
He doesn’t FORCE passes like Josh.
He’s not making GLARING mistakes.
Is he Peyton Manning? probably not, but then again how many people “are?” I always say the litmus test for a QB is 50 games. You know if you have a QB after 50 games. That gets all the learning curve crap out of the way.

Ok so i decided the last couple days you needed some help because seems your specialty is drama. Glennon has not proved he’s a franchise QB yet and not because he hasnt won a game yet, he probably never will with schiano coaching!!!
It’s not our fault the bucs suck at drafting quarterbacks–only 3 ever drafted in top 10 (trent dilfer, vinnie testerverde and doug williams)

If we draft a new QB we end up starting all over again – again. Glennon is getting progressively better every week and will continue to do so if given time. I think we found a diamond in the rough

Buc4lyfe, how do you know Teddy or Marcus won’t poop themselves in the NFL? There are NO guarantees that a top 10 pick will pan out(See Rick Mirer!). Rookies almost always struggle, and when they don’t, it’s rare. Quote your stats at the end of the season and then pass judgement. You never know!

Mike Glennon is right now the best rookie QB this year. Geno Smith gets all the run but he has an elite defense carrying him. Glennon is putting up better numbers in a more chaotic situation. I hope he keeps getting better down the stretch and we can spend that first pick on either of the lines.

Glennon keeps improving, you give him next year to show us all what he is made of.
It would be a shame to give Freeman 61 starts in pewter, and not even afford Glennon a full 16.
Glennon is going to become our guy, because he wants it that bad.
Freeman was gifted with physical ability, but he pales in comparison to the type of leader Glennon is and will develop further.
Give the kid a shot. I am pleased to see him progress, try his arse off, and look like he gives a hoot.
It was unbearable to watch Freeman suck, cry, and remain unable to audible.
Dominick should roast for the Freeman pick, but if Glennon proves he can be our guy for next year, Schiano and Dom will be saved.
Schiano is close to figuring this thing out, and if we can win 3-4 games this year, we may have a shot to continue putting this together for next year.
It would be sad to disgard Glennon, draft and MISS on another 1st round QB.

I know there are no guarantees when drafting a QB in the top ten, but that shouldn’t be a reason to give up trying. its the most important position in football, without it your unlikely to win a super bowl. so if that means we have to draft a QB in the first round every year until we finally find one, then so be it. thats the way I feel about it anyway.

I dont know even know who the best quarterback in college football is this year, i dont watch it like i watch nfl BUT why take the chance?
this is the reason why i say floridians have no idea what a franchise quarterback looks like we havent drafted a top 10 quarterback since trent dilfer and that doesnt bother anyone.
If green bay had brett favre and still drafted aaron rodgers who i KNEW was a steal, why cant we draft a top pick and let him sit and develop?
look at RG3 but you still have people talking about wanting to give up picks for KURK COUSINS. I’m tired of guessing yes so someone needs to step it up and double up on quarterbacks…no one was sure about ej manuel or the jets qb but you dont see them having worries about the future, its gotta be done just for security and assurance

I like Glennon, he has played pretty well up to this point given the circumstances. but the thing that bothered me the most about him when I watched him in college was that he just couldn’t seem to pull out a victory when the game was on the line. I know he did it when he beat Florida State, but for the majority of his games he didn’t. some have said its because he lacked the talent around him, and that’s a valid point, but the really good ones still find a way to win inspite of that. now we see that same issue plague him in the pros. I just hope somehow he finds a way to overcome this because I really do want to see this guy succeed.

Glennon couldn’t beat the best defense up 21. He’s not going to be a winner. Looks decent. Decent isn’t enough. It’s not 02 I’ve been crying Bridgewater since week 2. Sick of watching every team with a top 5 pick grabbing qb’s all better than Glennon or freeman. Bridgewater isn’t ponder. He will be good and with him,and the worst in game coach in football out the door the team wins 10 games next year. Guaranteed. Glennons good. Not good enough in this nfl.

I think it’s very telling that Free’s staunchest defender is now praising Glennon. I really hope he works out. I am no Free fan but I think the “it’s all about 5” campaign was premature and went to his head. Look what happened when Bowers was handed the starting job and Schiano was talking about double digit sacks.

Sorry but decent is good enough. Mediocre Joe Flacco just won the Super Bowl, the Chiefs are 9-0 with good enough Alex Smith. Good enough can win you a lot of games in this league.

@Buc4lyfe the Bucs do not suck at drafting QBs in the top 10 when 2 out of the 3 guys you mentioned are Super Bowl champions. They do however suck at developing and sticking to a plan.
I really do hope Glennon pans out. Like someone else mentioned, it’ll almost be like another first round pick. Hopefully he’ll get that deep ball going.

It also remains to be seen how Glennon will react when his supposed leadership is wasted by the defective coaching we currently have. Game like Sunday will sap his fire to the point he’ll give up, if it continues too long. No-one like to tilt at windmills only to have their efforts sabotaged. Should that happen, we’ll play hell trying to get a quality QB here in the future. Kind’a like the Bo saga…

In my opinion, it’s way too early to rate Glennon by using stats. Some of us ‘Old Timers’ will remember a third round pick who put up some unimpressive numbers for his first ‘full’ season as a starter. He had 15 TDs and 9 INTs. his QB rating was 87.8. He averaged just 120yds per game at *6.6 yds per attempt*. If the coach had decided to get a “Sure-fire first-rounder”, Joe Montana would have missed out on a couple of Super Bowl rings. BTW, the ‘Pro Bowlers that Glennon has are hardly an advantage over Dwight Clark, Freddie Solomon, and Charle Young. And imagine how much easier Glennons’ job would be if his *FB* ran for 720 yds this year.
Glennon may (or may not) be the franchise QB for this (or any other) team. At this point, I just think all the clamoring that the Bucs ‘must’ draft a first-round QB is premature. There’ll be plenty of time to clamor in two months. In the mean time, who are your top QB, OL, and DL prospects coming out of college? One of these is likely to be the Bucs’ first pick.

The Buccaneer QB “Bar” is set so low that we’re falling all over ourselves to praise and annoint Glennon? Wow it’s gotten “80’s” bad up in here. I’m warming to the kid but mostly as a solid back-up. If The Bucs skip a qb in the top 3 and/or retain Schiano…we better pray Winston is the pick in 2014 ( and Schiano is bad enough to ensure that ).

Am I I hearing all this correctly? Keep Glennon as the starter if we have a top pick? He’s 0-5 and could only muster 3 points in the 2nd half against Seattle. I understand hes getting better but hello he’s supposed to; he’s a paid athlete. You draft Bridgewater if you get the chance. That’s a no brainer. Oh an Joe Flacco? His stats may suck but hes got the It Factor and he won the first two games he played in as a Rookie. Alex Smith? He was a first round pick. Are you people serious? The plan should be ride the season out, keep Dom, fire the coach, draft a quarter back with a top 3 pick. I know the Dom haters will flip cookies but who else is there? Hmmm? Remember when you people yelled for Gruden to be fired? Look where we are now. Dominic nabbed Martin, Lavonte, and Mark Barron in the SAME draft. You think it was Dom who wanted Shiano? In this NFL, you need at least 2 good QB’s. Fire the Little General. Draft Clowney with the #1 overall. Draft Murray or Manziel in the 2nd.

They don’t need a Franchise QB to win a Super Bowl – They don’t need a Elway, Marino, and Luck and so on…What they do need is a BEAST TO SACK THE QUARTERBACK!! If they have that, they win in Seattle and Glennon wins too!! (FUNNY HOW THAT WORKS) IF they had that last year, they could have had a year that resemble the Giants last Superbowl season – But only if Glennon could have quarterbacked…Not Freeman…
Floridagirl is correct, Be satisfied with what you have now at the quarterback position – make it grow…in the meantime, try getting one aspect of the defense that can dominate and can be a game changer eg not losing containment to Wilson type QB’s…
There are a couple of Defense players, I’m aware of, in this Draft that can be game changers and change the a teams fortunes….I think its best they focus their attention in this direction..

Draft a QB even if Glennon does well. Period. Why?
First, Tampa is the home of one year wonders. Glennon could win out the rest of the year and still suck next year.
Second, Glennon can still start next year if he earned it, and if he continues to do well we can always trade.
Thirdly, Glennon sucks.
From the first game he played in to the last has he even completed more than one long pass? His long game as not improved at all. Ño way will the field get stretched with only short to medium passes. And btw…his medium passes? Not that much better.

I like the kid. He is a steal to be able to pick him up in the 3rd Rd. And I would give him an even better evaluation if his gf came to my house to talk up ihis good points.
But, seriously, he is not Luck, or Teddy. and if the Bucs have a shot at a top notch 10-15 year Franchise QB, they would be total and complete idiots to not draft that franchise building, every year playoff QB. That is such a rare opportunity. That is why half the NFL teams are “haves” and the others are “have nots”

Tom Brady: Not Mobile or Athletic Looking and does Not Throw a Great Deep Ball… although he does Now, now that he has had time to work on his Technique and gotten used to NFL Game Speed.
Here are his Stats from his Second Year in the League after Bledsoe went down with an injury…
Games Played: 15
Pass Attempts: 413 Pass Completed: 264 Completion %: 63.9%
Attempts per Game: 27.5 Average Yards per Completion: 6.9 YPG
Passing Yards: 2843 Yards Average Yards per Game: 189.5 YPG
Touchdowns for the Year: 18 Interceptions on the Year: 12
Brady was Sacked 41 Times that Year.
QB Rating for the Season: 86.5
I didn’t count the Distance on his Passes or Touchdowns because the numbers are skewed due to the possibility a Short Pass was taken the Distance.
Now, Again, I am NOT saying Glennon is Brady NOR am I saying that Glennon WILL BE Brady; I’m just saying that Glennon’s Numbers and his Skill Set is Comparable to Brady’s. Granted he DID win a Super Bowl that Year BUT he had a Ridiculously Good Defense AND they Got Away with a Ridiculous Call that went their way… “The Tuck”. The Raiders actually should’ve played in the Super Bowl that Year (*just an opinion of course).
For Several Years, the Boston Fans complained about Brady’s INABILITY to Throw the Ball Deep… for Years! He did eventually get Better at it and is an Excellent Deep Ball Thrower now.
I write all of this to say that, Glennon has shown enough ability in ONLY FOUR GAMES that I Believe that He could Develop into our Long Term Solution at QB for our Team. He in Fact, if he stays Healthy, will Match or Exceed Brady’s Production from his (Brady’s) SECOND YEAR IN THE LEAGUE (Brady sat under Bledsoe for his Entire Rookie Year) WITH LESS GAMES PLAYED.
This is JUST an Opinion. None of us will know, nor can we say for certain, how his Season will pan out BUT, he has shown Enough (at least for me) to at least have Hope. Thank You for taking the time to read my Post. =)

Since the 2005 Draft there have been 21 QBs taken in the first round, only 8 have started in a playoff game and are currently on an NFL roster. You are kidding yourself if you think that taking a QB in the first round gives us a franchise QB. In fact, since the late 1980s, the drop off in success rates from 1st round QBs and 2nd round QBs is only about 25%. This isn’t anecdotal cherry-picking, this is empirical research that shows that QB success is not as heavily correlated to the round he is chosen in as opposed to that of a Defensive Lineman or Linebacker.

This is exactly why I believe we should draft an OT or Clowney, and either draft a QB later in the draft or pick up a veteran backup. Everyone talks about how great the QB class is this year, but it’s still a crapshoot. Not to mention, if there are so many great QBs, then there are sure to be a few of them in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds who can compete and be developed (yes, I know we’re losing our 3rd this year for Revis). I’d rather have a guy like McCarron, Murray, or Mettenberger later in the draft and solidify our lines. If we’re still terrible and Glennon isn’t the guy, we have a backup or can draft someone in 2015. As long as Brees and the other QBs we face have all day to dissect our secondary, our QB won’t matter.
