Todd Bowles Non-Committal On Chris Godwin Return

April 1st, 2025

So is Todd Bowles expecting Chris Godwin on the field in Week 1?

Is that the current mindset at One Buc Palace?

Joe asked Bowles about that today at the NFC Coaches Breakfast in Palm Beach. (Bowles did not eat in front of media and Joe’s mouth was not full.)

The head coach said he doesn’t have an opinion or Week 1 expectation for Godwin right now. Bowles said he has to see more of his star receiver’s rehab work from a dislocated ankle in Week 7 of last season.

The implication was that Godwin is not running yet. Joe asked Bowles about cornerback Bryce Hall’s comeback from a dislocated ankle six week before Godwin’s and Bowles said Hall is running “full speed.”

It’s April 1. Opening day is five long months away. If there is no chatter about Godwin running full speed in June, Joe will be concerned.

    He’ll be running by mid-May.

  2. Lol Says:

Id be fine if Godwin missed the 1st quarter of the year. If it happens it happens. No sense in panicking. If so it gives Mike a good head start on padding his numbers and put pressure on McMillan to step up.

  3. PSL Bob Says:

He’ll be ready to go by Week 1. Full go! He’s a pro and doing everything he possibly can to be ready.

    Did Bucky have foot surgery?

    Great news on Bryce Hall!!

  6. Marine Buc Says:

This is why the Bucs need to draft a WR. It does not need to be done with pick #19 but it should be done within rounds 2,3 or 4…

  7. View from 232 Says:

As long as he’s back by week 10 and available week 21.

  8. Half_Sac Says:

I have faith Godwin will be back by week one. Bryce Hall being healthy is huge too because if our defense could be just a bit better in the back-end we can make a deep run with the additions we’ve made this off-season.

  9. Beeej Says:

We gonna carry 5 again? Seeing they already signed Shepard, that only leaves more slot, Jarret, whom they seem to like, and Palmer

  10. VOT Says:

I think the draft will tell us a lot – if they go WR in the top 3 rounds you have to believe there is trepidation- if we wait for the developmental rounds or just UDFA that speaks volumes as well

    what the rush?…lol…

evans, j-mac, palmer, otton, sterling, bucky, white

take your time CG…i wouldnt mind if CG began the season on the PUP list….

    let the ground game gel…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  12. Obvious Says:

Have to find a receiver by day two of the draft that can contribute week one.

What do you even mean? Have to? Is Evans Mcmillan, Shepard, Palmer and Otton not a really good group already in your mind?

Would this rookie take the #3 role from shep and palmer?

  14. MadMax Says:

Been saying it and standing by it….Jayden Higgins rd 2.

  15. Hodad Says:

Chances are at pick 19 there will be better receivers on the board then edge rushers. Any edge we draft will have four good players in front of him. Reddick, Ya, Braz, Nelson. At receiver we have ol man Evans, who needs to come off the field after every catch, and Godwin who’s coming off his second horrible injury. Now he might not be ready? Top receivers will fall, top edge guys won’t. Matthew Golden’s 4.29 speed would sure put some much needed juice in the receiver room. He’d open up the middle of the field, and help the run game by keeping safties back. A good receiver at 19 would do much more for the team then some edge with 4 players in front of him. With two older starting wides, one coming off injury, we are not stacked at receiver.

  16. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Speed ain’t everything.

    Cough.. cough Trey Palmer

  17. Joe Says:

    Speed ain’t everything.

    Cough.. cough Trey Palmer

Palmer is a Pro Bowler compared to John Ross.

“Oh, but he won the 40!”

  18. Obvious Says:

    LOL:

Well if you read the article the HC of the team is not committing to Godwin being ready for the season. You might also remember that Evans is 32 and Jalen has had injuries the last two seasons.

I remember what happened after that Baltimore game. It’s that simple.

  19. Hodad Says:

Matthew Golden is not just fast. He’s a polished route runner. Reminds me of A.B. without the lose screws. We can use a talent like that, but ho ahead, draft another JTS at 19.

  20. BucDawg Says:

I totally agree about Golden. A can’t miss WR prospect.

Watching every Texas game I got to see just how special he was.

Defenses cannot ignore him which does open the running lanes.

If he’s there at 19 it wouldn’t be a wasted pick.

But if Barron is there I’d pick him instead.

Defense wins championships and Bowles wins nothing as a HC.

  21. Vanessa Anne Says:

    Two things:

    1. The Bucs just signed Chris to a 3-year $66 million deal.

They would not have done that if they thought he wouldn’t be able to contribute this year, or if they felt the injury was going to hamper the rest of his career.

    2. From the files of…

“How to Create a Public Relations Nightmare 101”

    A. Take your injured star player who is universally loved by an unbelievably loyal fan base, and tell that fan base your star player will be back by such-and-such date.

    B. Sit back and wait for God or the universe or whatever higher power you believe in, to do the inevitable and blast that date you gave the loyal fan base, (and by default the national media and the entire league fan base), to smithereens.

    C. Cringe in horror and stand there with a deer in the headlights look on your face as that unbelievably loyal fan base (and by default the national media and the entire league fan base) goes absolutely nuclear on you faster than you can say “Hey Culligan Man”!.

All because you were stupid enough to say that your star player would be back by a certain date.

Jason Licht and Coach Swiss Cheese aren’t stupid.

They have the one medical team in the country that’s got the best intel on how Chris is doing.

They also don’t want to pressure Chris to push himself any harder than he should.

And then there’s the fan base. Oh wait. I covered that…

Jason and the Coach are saying the right thing.
