Interested mock Joe posted couple of posts below think it was jeremiah. lot of de get drafted before the bucs. Not sure the value is there to go edge. It has campbell dropping to 32 to the eagles and I dont even see that safety everyone was clamoring about even being picked in round 1.
Voted “Other” – Never lock into a positional need in the draft. Take the best player available, preferably one that also fills a need, but the priority should be getting a high-impact player who can start from day one.
That said, I’m hoping for defense. I really enjoyed watching the offense last season, but the defense made me want to puke.
One of the Top-3 mammoth DT/NTs will be there when we pick. Pull the trigger Jason. That’ll give us a beastly center of the DLine (Vea & Sasquatch) that can take on double teams & win. Kancey & Hall will feast as a result, as will all of our OLBs & any blitzing LBs/CBs/Safeties.
Then Bucs trade Baker Mayfield to Pittsburgh for their number 1 this year (number 21 overall) and Pittsburgh number 2 next year unless Pittsburgh makes the Super Bowl in which case the number 2 next year becomes a number 1.
The Bucs then trade that newly acquired number 21 pick to Cincinnati for Trey Hendrickson and sign him to a 5 year 150 million dollar deal. He leads the NFC in sacks but not the NFL.
The Bucs in the second round to keep DR happy get one of those beastly, thick Defensive tackles.
3rd and 4th round they get the corner and the ILB.
The Bucs make the Super Bowl and LOSE to the Steelers. Watts who led the NFL sacks has a field day against Goedeke. Baker has the better game than Shadeur and all the Joe Bucs fans complain that they always knew Baker was the best QB ever.
ONeilbuc gets on here and tells everyone “I told you so”.
Baker Bowl … Bucs DLine got pushed around last season on 4th down (allowing 63.3% success rate really sucks & cost us 2-3 wins IMO, plus the playoff loss). We also blitzed way too much IMO, largely because our 3-man front & 2 OLBs only got real pressure when Vea was out there (without him, we’re MUCH too light … not beastly enough). And something folks keep forgetting I think is that Vea’s out there on as many running downs as he is passing downs, so it’s not like his 60% on-field rate is ALL on passing downs.
My bottom line is that we’ve got to beef up in the center of the DLine, to augment Vea. We’re not getting consistent pressure, and as a consequence we’re blitzing to try to generate that pressure. Taking ILBs/CBs/Safeties out of pass coverage to blitz seems to be causing us to use a LOT more zone than I’d like, and it’s still leaving gaps in coverage. Quick passes in the ‘short zone’ is something that just about any NFL QB can do successfully. Our concept isn’t working well enough. Evidence our #29 pass rating.
Solution? Better, more consistent interior DLine pass rush. Let’s us use LESS blitzing & keep our ILBs/DBs in coverage, with 3-5 players pass rushing. And if the interior pass rush is more effective during games, our DEs & OLBs SHOULD also be more effective. It’s a numbers thingie.
Baker Bowl … Oops, forgot to answer about Ty Robinson. Good motor, but too light (288 lbs). I want someone who looks at Vea and asks ‘Hey, getting kinda skinny, aren’t ya?’
I like that take, agreed that the blitzing can get out of hand occasionally. Kancey seemed to take a major step up last season, so I guess my next question would be, how much of that blitzing can be linked to the poor pass coverage ability of our DBs and ILBs. LVD is slow and not quite what he used to be in coverage, and is more effective as a rusher imo, but then we don’t have the depth behind him to cover and tackle. DBs have been a pain point for me for YEARS, and I think that they get too much credit for their ability (see JAMEL DEAN).
My thought is that Bowles blitzes to cover Dean’s poor performance. Tykee and Zyon are much much better, Zyon might be ready for CB1 and the outside role most if not all the time.
Do you think patching those holes could still get us out of the blitz first and fast mentality?
Also, I bring up Robinson because I watch a lot of husker ball (hence my optimism with TP) and he just motors every play, him and Nash terrorized the OL opposite them, in the Big10 no less.
As long as the Bucs land Thor Griffith, I’m calling it a win. He’s the steal of the draft—versatile, powerful, and built to anchor the interior D-line for years. Line him up anywhere and he’ll make life hell for offenses. He can hold his ground at nose, but if you let him shoot gaps as a 3-tech, he’s got enough burst to wreck plays before they start. That kind of flexibility is gold in today’s NFL, especially with how much teams mix fronts.
If the Bucs do grab him, imagine pairing him with Vita Vea on early downs. Just a brick wall inside. Throw in some pass rush juice on passing downs and you’re cooking.
The rest? I’m vibing with depth pieces like Zah Frazier, Nick Martin, and Jackson Slater—tough, versatile, and smart football dudes. But really, this draft is all about Thor late for me. Get him in pewter and red, and I’m good. You guys can argue the first 3 rounds I’ll take 4-7.
A majority of fans want us to pick an edge rusher who will just be a 2nd stringer/backup this year??? What a waste of a pick that would be. Thank God fans aren’t picking for us.
Rarely do edge rushers make an impact as rookies. And it’s hardly a sure thing Haason Reddick returns in 2026. So why not have your young edge rusher ready to rock in his second year, 2026?
There is only one position on defense Joe can see a rookie starting, and that’s at safety. No, Joe doesn’t think a rookie corner will start over Jamel Dean (unless the Bucs cut Dean and that wouldn’t be very smart from a salary cap standpoint).
Yes, the Bucs, the guys who actually decide who plays and when, like Logan Hall and SirVocea Dennis that much.
And clearly there is no place for a rookie to start on offense, unless the Bucs are hiding an injury (Chris Godwin?).
So whoever the Bucs draft tonight, unless it is safety, good bet the guy starts the season as a backup.
I see your point, but I also think that the people suggesting edge are assuming that they would be the starter. I think that Yaya and Reddick are gonna be the starters, but unreplaceable? No.
I don’t think there’s an edge available at 19 that can/would start for us, but I am also not a scout so what do I know.
Reddick has to prove something after last year, and Yaya has to take another step up, but what are you seeing that makes their starting spots untouchable?
So whoever the Bucs draft tonight, unless it is safety, good bet the guy starts the season as a backup.
I think any of the top 3 CBs can and should start over Dean as CB1, I also think depending on how you define starter, an ILB could be more than a backup.
Ok, I guess I can see the logic of drafting an edge rusher at #19 if everyone is fine with not getting a potential starter or major contributor this year with our RD 1 pick.
I would personally rather us draft the best Safety or CB who would probably contribute much more to our success this season.
And I didn’t say ILB because I think SVD is the best man for that job and can’t be beat out, unless he goes down with an injury.

dt, s, or cb in rd 1 maybe a trade back

I just want those OC’s game planning runs against our DL to say, “Oh Hell nahhhh!”

Feeling a trade back is likely and I hope we make a king’s ransom in doing so.

ILBs are not super expensive in FA. Only take one in round one if it’s a can’t miss prospect imo.

I like the trade idea… then we can also load up on DBs too…

I’m with defense rules.
I also want a DT/NT in the first.
And a DT/DE in the 2nd.
Corners in the 3rd and 4th.
Edge in the 1st round next year.
April 24th, 2025 at 9:08 am
The only reason I’m against an OLB in the 1st is because we wasted a pick on JTS just 4 years ago.
Braswell also seems like a wasted 2nd round pick.
We literally can’t invest another premium pick in an OLB.
It would be poor thinking long term.
We need a guaranteed contributor for the next 4 years as Vea gets older.
We NEED a DT/NT. We don’t NEED a 5th OLB. (Diaby, Reddick, Braswell, Nelson)
April 24th, 2025 at 9:08 am
My prediction.
Bucs stay at 19 and pick QB Shadeur Sanders.
Then Bucs trade Baker Mayfield to Pittsburgh for their number 1 this year (number 21 overall) and Pittsburgh number 2 next year unless Pittsburgh makes the Super Bowl in which case the number 2 next year becomes a number 1.

How do you feel about Ty Robinson out of Nebraska? Confident he’ll be available in the 3rd range, guy is a BEAST.

Hey, smart guys.
Who would that edge rusher start over this year? Yaya Diaby? Nope. Hassan Reddick? Nope.
He would be a backup like Chris Braswell is for one side.
You don’t draft a guy in the 1st round to be a backup.
That would be stupid.
April 24th, 2025 at 11:09 am
It would actually be smart if you think it through.
This was discussed in detail on Ira Kaufman’s last podcast (with Sean Sullivan).
Rarely do edge rushers make an impact as rookies. And it’s hardly a sure thing Haason Reddick returns in 2026. So why not have your young edge rusher ready to rock in his second year, 2026?

@Joe –
What am I missing about Jamel Dean? Is it just because he is good enough that we don’t need to worry about replacing him?
I’m genuinely asking, not trying to hate on the guy, but I think an upgrade could drastically change our coverage ability.
He’s not terrible, but I wouldn’t say he’s good. And where the bucs are currently, an important position like CB should be better than ‘good’
