Jason Licht Talks About “Huge” Move He Made Re-Signing Ben Bredeson
April 3rd, 2025
Jason Licht beams.
No, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht did not re-sign left guard Ben Bredeson on the Bucs’ front office boat cruise. But Bredeson’s agent did agree to terms with Licht’s staff while on the boat.
And while Joe is under the impression this move angered some Bucs fans, Licht will argue the opposite. In his chat with the local pen and mic club from the owners meetings this week at the swanky Breakers resort in Palm Beach, Licht suggested Bredeson re-signing is a monster deal.
“Huge,” Licht said. “I’ve said a million times it feels like, that [offensive line] room is the most important room in the building, for everybody. For football side, business side, everybody – jobs are on the line, and when that offensive line room is jelling and playing well, we all thrive.
“[Bredeson] fits in well with them. He’s a great leader, he’s a great person, he’s a great teammate and he’s a good player. [We are] very excited to have him back.”
It doesn’t hurt that Bredeson and Bucs star left tackle Tristan Wirfs have grown close. Want to keep the big guy happy.
Joe never understood why Bredeson triggered so many. Is he Will Shields? Of course not. Bredeson is not the second coming of Garrett “Whoops” Gilkey, either.
Bredeson started on one of the best offensive lines in the NFL and arguably the best pass-blocking line in the NFL. Joe’s not sure why or how that makes Bredeson an albatross.

May be the weak link on a great offensive line but he’s a decent enough player. Well done Ben and Jason Licht!

I like Bredeson, glad we got him back. My concern is a true bu C for Barton. McLaughlin and Majors could be a late rd choice (5th) if we deem it necessary. And a new guy on my radar, late rd, is RB Kalel Mullings…big dude. If we happen to land a 6th in a trade, there it is.

Baker avoided 20 sacks dancing in the backfield.
If Tom had been there, he would have released tbe ball.
Baker bought us time with his fancy moves.
Baker extended many plays this year.
Our offensive line is not as good as people think.

Since this third attempt by the Joe’s at trying to find ANYBODY to take shots at Bredson is a non stater, this is the perfect time to address the fellow or lady for that matter whom is attempting to high jack “my handle” (Obvious) on this here web page…..
I’m “assuming” it’s an honest mistake. Clearly you’re new around Joe Buc Fans page since “Obvious” has been my call sign for the last 3 years and you and I are much different in our approach. I’m a bit on the aggressive side and you’re a bit more umm…. laid back.
It’s Always good to have a new brother or sister Buc fan around but my handle (Obvious) is already taken. I’m sure you’ll come up with a better one anyways.
Thank you in advance
” OBVIOUS “

I agree, Joe.
I don’t understand why some folks are so down on Ben.
Our O-Line played very solid last year. Maybe not perfect, but no o-line does.
Every chain, every group, every team, has a weak link, just like it has its strongest links.
Ben may or may not be that link for our O-Line.
But given how well he and the entire O-Line played last year, it’s a chain that’s doing pretty good.
I’m glad he’s back. Our entire starting line is back and now has a full season under its belt of working together. That kind of consistency will only make it better this year.

Bredson seemed like a highly competent player out there. I’d say … If you do replace the guy … How likely are you to find somebody noticably better? In his case you would probably rue letting him go. The guy is solid. He’s a keeper.

Fans who are putting out this bad insulting stuff on Bredeson really need to go back two years and watch Stinnie and Leverette looking lost. Some folks would complain if you hung em with a new rope! It’s scratching my neck!
Jason is right that signing was huge! Who we got behind him folks…Opeta coming off a knee? Klein who is totally unproven? Be careful what you wish for. Rookie in the draft? Yeah right….That always works out.
Plus he did it while on a big ass boat! Dang it man that is Tampa Baby!
Go Bucs!

“””Baker avoided 20 sacks dancing in the backfield.”””
So very true.

“[Bredeson] fits in well with them. He’s a great leader, he’s a great person, he’s a great teammate and he’s a good player. [We are] very excited to have him back.
Notice he described him as great at a lot of things then said good when describing him as a player in the same breath. Not the greatest endorsement imho!

More hyperbole

The OL improved a lot last year, including the addition of Bredeson, but this OL is not elite like Philly or Detroit. I disagree with Joe that the pass blocking is great, Bake was dancing for his life too many times. Our run blocking inside the 10 was far from elite. I am not ‘hating’ our OL, I’m just saying they can be better. With the leadership from Wirfs, these guys will be competing against each other in the weight room, and that attitude should bring another good year, but can they be elite?

Here I will fix the following:
“[Bredeson] fits in well with them. He’s a great leader, he’s a great person, he’s a great teammate and he’s a good player. [We are] very excited to have him back.”
to
“[Bredeson] fits in well with them. He’s a fair leader, he’s a fair person, he’s a fair teammate and he’s a fair player. [We are] satisfied to have him back.”

“Joe never understood why Bredeson triggered so many.”
Maybe the reason is that he has a huge positional problem. His arms are short — nearly the shortest ever for a guard. Imagine a chance with the third slowest time ever recorded for that position. And we’ve seen the problems an athletically limited LB can cause.
That said, he’s done a good job in spite of that physical limitation. So he must have used some advantages to offset his weaknesses.

@Buc U
Thank you.
Baker avoided 20 sacks. Go back and watch the film.
Tom would have been killed last year.

Maybe Jason knows better than a couple couch maroons. Could it be.

Every room in the NFL has a comparative weak link in it. Bredeson just seems to be the weak link in this particular room. And, frankly, that’s only from the outsider’s perspective.
Let’s not forget, though, that Bredeson was the starter. Sua Opeta was his back-up and we didn’t see him but for maybe a handful of downs. And by “maybe a handful,” I really mean, “I don’t remember seeing him once, but it’s possible he snuck in for a few snaps here and there and I didn’t notice.”
If Bredeson was truly the weakest link in that room, we’d have seen Opeta or Elijah Klein more than we did. …or didn’t…
