“He’s Definitely Going To Play This Year”

April 1st, 2025

It’s always fun when Joe can corner NFL super agent Drew Rosenhaus at an NFL owners meeting.

That’s what happened today in Palm Beach as Rosenhaus was picking up a takeout snack at a swanky snack bar. Joe pounced after Rosenhaus paid the bill.

Thankfully, Rosenhaus was willing to share on the record versus the popular, “I’m not going to comment on that.”

For this post, Joe is focused on Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett, who is represented by Rosenhaus.

Shaq fans will rejoice. “He’s definitely going to play this year,” Rosenhaus said of Shaq.

However, that doesn’t mean he’s a lock to return to Tampa Bay.

While Shaq has made it clear he wants another year with the Bucs, and Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht professed his love of Shaq this week — and at the NFL Scouting Combine in February — Rosenhaus was clear that Shaq is now considering all opportunities and seeking the best fit.

“We’ll never close the door on Shaq,” Licht said in February with energy in his voice. “We’ll see where that goes. We never close the door on Shaq.”

Shaq turns 33 in November. He retired last July after signing with the Dolphins but returned for two Bucs games late last season, as Tampa Bay was desperate for a pass rush.

Joe thinks the Bucs are waiting to see how the NFL Draft shakes out before making Shaq an offer. Or perhaps they made Shaq a rock bottom deal and he’s waiting for something better.

The guy has been through a lot. Shaq, not Rosenhaus. Would love to see him get one more SB.

  2. Bojim Says:

    I’d sign him.

  3. sethery Says:

imagine an edge/olb room with reddick, diaby, shaq, nelson, then with braswell and maybe another stuf rookie in development. offenses would be getting hit from every angle. our depth would have depth!

  4. Truth be Told Says:

Game of chicken at this point lowball an offer nothing but incentives in playing time and sacks clauses to be earned. It’s all he deserves at this point. he ain’t going anywhere else.

  5. Mike Johnson Says:

I don’t know why many players refuse to accept their exit time is either here or near. Shaq could be a backup. But his best days are long gone. All he is doing is risking further injury to himself. Time to..ride off into the sunset Shaq

  6. CleanHouse Says:

Maybe Shawn would play better with Reddik

  7. CleanHouse Says:

    Shaq

  8. bucsfan951 Says:

Even if the Bucs sign Shaq, I think his greatest asset would be to coach up these younger guys. I simply cannot see Shaq making an impact on the field. I mean zero disrespect when I say this. I love the dude and wish him the best.

  9. Usfbucs Says:

I wouldn’t mind bringing him back to complete the depth but I would use him sparingly.

  10. FilthyAnimal Says:

If they think carrying 6 OLBs will work, they could sign Shaq AND draft another

    Reddick
    Diaby
    Braswell
    Nelson
    Shaq
    (draftee)

If 6 is too many (and it probably is), you can’t sign Shaq and draft one. Is Shaq better than Anthony Nelson at this point? Probably not, and Nelson has guaranteed money. Braswell and Diaby aren’t going anywhere.

You also have the immortal Markees Watts and José Ramirez.

“We’ll never close the door on Shaq,” Licht said

That’s because Father Time already slammed that door shut

  12. Cardiac kidz Says:

If the price is right, he can sub for Reddick and Diaby, which will ensure constant pressure from the ends at all times, thus making it easier for the interior DLine play.
We should have the coin and suspect a hometown discount.

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

What happened to using “Oily” in front of Rosenhaus’s name? Was there a Jim “Chris” Everett/Jim Rome moment we missed?

  14. 813BUCBOI Says:

i’d sign him after rookie minicamp

    GO BUCS!!!!

  15. Beeej Says:

Shaq needs to learn the word “rotational”

  16. Mr. Editor Says:

The price will go up if the Bucs don’t get the player that they covet in the draft.

  17. HC Grover Says:

    Sounds good

Not really. At this point, he doesn’t really have any leverage. He didn’t have great production in 2023, and then didn’t play last year.

  19. Buccup Says:

The thing that would help Shaq Barrett the most is to focus on his physical conditioning. Make a statement by being lean and mean.

  20. Brandon Says:

Shaq won’t be back the 3rd-6th edge rushers HAVE to play special teams if they are on the roster. He doesn’t play ST.

  21. Crickett Baker Says:

I am glad to see some at least talking about Shaq. I noticed that he is not showing up on the team roster. Thanks for the article.

I noticed that he is not showing up on the team roster.

Of course he’s not showing up on the team roster. He’s not under contract. A free agent is not a part of the team… that’s basic.

  23. garro Says:

Jason! Get this dude on the payroll!

    Go Bucs!

  24. adam from ny Says:

shaq wants to be comeback player of the year…

maybe the achilles is good to go by now

  25. Srbija Says:

We need all help we can get on edge, perheps we could get Rendy Gregory 🤣🤣🤣

  26. Esteban85 Says:

Love Shaq and wish him the best but I think it’s time to move on from him.
