Dave Canales Praises Todd Bowles’ Guidance

April 3rd, 2025

Todd Bowles is the kind of guy who is quick to lend a hand to those he likes.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a division rival. Joe nearly vomited last season upon hearing slimy Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi thank Bowles for reaching out and offering a couple of words of wisdom.

Joe was so shaken by that at the time, Joe didn’t even write about it.

The 2023 Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales also benefited from Bowles’ advice. He’s mentioned that months ago, but he went there unsolicited during his sitdown with Kay Adams of FanDuel TV this week at the NFL owners meetings in Palm Beach.

“I gotta give a shoutout to Todd Bowles,” Canales told Adams. “He said, ‘hey, find things you can anticipate every day. It’s going to come up.’

“So I think that was the part that took me by surprise [as a new head coach] is how connected a head coach is to every area, you know, all the way from the weight room all the way to the cafeteria and especially of the meeting rooms and all that.”

As Bucs fans may have heard, Bowles stood next to Liam Coen for the annual NFL head coaches photo this week. Bowles has sent a few pearls of wisdom Coen’s way, too.

    Bowles is a good man.

  2. FilthyAnimal Says:

    It’s sportsmanship. I’m pretty sure the elders in the NFL routinely give tips to help out the younger guys even if they’re potential competition. Bowles is a good man and a good coach who gets way more shyte from Bucs fans than he deserves.

  3. RandomBuc Says:

    So do Dave Canales and Liam Cohen fall under the Todd Bowles coaching tree?
    (Asking for a friend)
    Superbowl Winning Defensive Coordinator
    4 Time NFC South Champ
    2 head coaches and counting under his tree

    What are yall complaining about again?

  4. zzbucs Says:

    @Ron Mexico

    Agree with you a VEY good man, but let me add, he is way much better coach that what a big portion of our fan base thinks ….

    Of course clock management, very conservative and others are true, but he is not credited as he should on many areas.

  5. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    F Darren Rizzi.

  6. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Joe was so shaken by that at the time, Joe didn’t even write about it.

    Lol, the years must be catching up to us Joe—because this ain’t new. Bill Parcells, Bobby Knight, and plenty of old-school coaches have been doing this kind of thing for decades.

  7. NJbucs23 Says:

    That’s why it’s called a fraternity or a brotherhood. They’re in the elite class of coaches. Of course you help each other out.

  8. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Todd Bowles and Darren Rizzi coached together in Miami, with Rizzi serving under Bowles during his interim head coach stint in 2011.

    Similarly, Bob Knight coached Mike Krzyzewski at Army and later mentored him at Indiana before they became rivals.

    This isn’t some wild anomaly—Bowles helping Rizzi fits a long-standing coaching tradition rooted in respect and mentorship, even across enemy lines.

    Per Bobby Knight:
    “You don’t play against opponents; you play against the game of basketball.”

  9. Krewe Since Birth Says:

    @zzbucs

    if he’s a way better coach than the majority of the fanbase thinks he is, he hasn’t proven it. Remember, he’s still only 1.5 games above .500 as Bucs HC, and below .500 overall.

    I’ll give him that he’s a better coach than Raheem was, but that’s a low bar.

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Head Coach Todd Bowles

    Regular-season record with Buccaneers: 27–24 (.529)

    Playoff record with Buccaneers: 1–3 (.250)

    Consecutive NFC South titles: 3 (2022, 2023, 2024 seasons)

  11. BucDawg Says:

    I’d say based on the state of the defense in Carolina that Canales listened very closely to Todd Bowles advice.

    Might be the only pass defense worse than the Swiss Cheese product we get to enjoy on an annual basis.

    TB zero just pumping out pearls of wisdom like hot cakes.

    His coaching tree is just so fruitful.

    28-27

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

    Look, Bowles got a few deficiencies like everybody else. But overall, He’s a good dude. I like he hired somebody to assist him with game Mngt though. You cannot stay in a vocation for decades and not learn how to maneuver. If he can get this Defense going this upcoming season? We might be on our way.

  13. heyjude Says:

    Good for Canales for giving a shout-out to Coach Bowles!

    Todd is a stand-up guy. So glad he is our coach.

  14. Aqualung Says:

    That’s nice.

    Now back to fixing the pass defense.

  15. zzbucs Says:

    @Krewe Since Birth..

    Percentages is only one stat Sir….You should wide your research, not one just to convince yourself that you are right.
    Take a look at each one of his seasons and look to every detail, not just the negative once, and you will realize that you are wrong……
    Just try it, in not that difficult.

  16. GoneGator Says:

    So, those of you who think Todd is a crappy HC…. Who do you like better as a coach and why?Whats their record?

  17. BucDawg Says:

    @GoneGator

    Mike McCarthy –

    Regular season: 174–112–2 (.608)
    Postseason: 11–11 (.500)
    Career: 185–123–2 (.600)

    Super Bowl champion (XLV)

    He would be my choice to replace Bowles after the next huge embarrassing failure to end the season.

  18. GoneGator Says:

    @BucDawg

    I appreciate you that you have someone you like better instead of just dissing Todd but I don’t see McCarthy as an upgrade at all.

    What did he do with the cowboys? Isn’t he looking for work now?

  19. drdneastup Says:

    KreweSinceBirth, I can always tell a college football fan. I’m no big fan of Bowlse but this isnt the SEC or Big Ten where u can pay other teams like Morehead or Valdosta St. to come in and get their asses kicked and also load your schedule up on other weaker non conference opponents. It’s the NFL where the system is rigged for every team to be about equal. From the draft to the salary cap, everything is weighted for teams to be even so the competition is more even makes the games more competitive. It’s why NFL viewership and the product continue to gain in popularity. A winning record in the NFL is no easy feat. Get some brains.

  20. OR Buc Says:

    Luvmybucs

    You got it right. Regular season records don’t matter if you win your division over the same time. The playoff record is the blemish, but outside of the chiefs, Bucs and Philly, the playoff record doesn’t mean anything over the last 5 years if you didn’t win it all. Also, Todd has dealt with so many disruptions over the last 3 years (salary cap constraints, late promotion to head coach and new OC for 3 years running) that the trend of improvements from year to year, while also looking toward the future, are simply undeniable.

  21. Peter Says:

    Mike McMuffin only won 1SB with those stacked GB teams
    Forget about Dallas

  22. Kieran Says:

    Class act

  23. SenileSenior Says:

    What I would like to know is how well do our posters represent Buc fans overall. Are we skewed and it looks like there is a higher percentage of negative opinions because those folks are more outspoken than the average fan?

  24. Drunkinybor Says:

    Words of wisdom. Better have been something to do with religion and not football. That would be hypocracy if he helped him with football coaching. He should have said I’ll call you next week. Bowles is an enigma wrapped in a shroud of darkness enclosed in a hidden chamber surrounded by lava.

  25. Aqualung Says:

    I trust Jason already knows and has his list of candidates to replace Todd Bowles. His one open shot, he hired BA. He’ll knock the next hire out of the park, too. When it becomes necessary. In 2024, we were one Anthony Nelson forced fumble away from finding out.

  26. Kenton Smith Says:

    Now, now Aqualung. If Nelson hadn’t knocked that fumble out we win the division anyway. We won the division by 2 games. Winning is a game of inches in the NFL, it really is. We could have easily won 4 more games. Bowles and Licht are winners, ought to be getting clearer to you by now.

  27. BucDawg Says:

    @GoneGator

    49-35 regular season for five years

    1-3 in the postseason with the lone win vs the Bowles led Bucs

    I believe he won 11 games three seasons in a row.

    Yes he’s unemployed now. After Bowles is fired he should be available.

    28-27 for TB zero
