Bucs Ownership Appreciates Todd Bowles Hiring Game/Clock Management Guru
April 1st, 2025Not good enough.
That mindset was at the root of one offseason decision by Todd Bowles.
After three seasons of not having a full-time dedicated game management/clock management guru, Bowles set out this winter to hire one.
He got his man within the past few weeks, Zach Beistline, who had the same role with the Jaguars.
A year ago, and Joe is not exaggerating. Bowles had a game-day team of three people in his ear providing guidance on various in-game decisions. Joe joked with Bowles about that at the NFL Scouting Combine and asked if is headset had hold music.
Some fans and Sage of Tampa Bay Sports Ira Kaufman speculated that perhaps Team Glazer urged Bowles to make the move following some highly debatable game decisions last year
Joe was skeptical of that take and asked Bucs co-owner Joel Glazer today to comment on the hire.
JoeBucsFan.com: Joel, Todd Bowles signed a game management/clock management guy this year. Is that something that you were involved in the decision or talking about it? Or how do you feel about it?
Joel Glazer: Todd always reflects on his season. The great thing about Todd is he will reflect on the season and see where things went well, may not have went well, where he can improve or we can improve. And that’s what we’re always trying to do. Todd adjusts to what’s needed and hats off to him for identifying an area that he thinks we can improve, and that can do nothing but help us for next season.
So there you go. Maybe Bowles came to the table wanting to streamline his game-day decisions and hire a guru, or perhaps it was suggested to him that it could help.
Regardless, it doesn’t matter. Bowles found a guy and hopefully he’s good at his job, or Bowles knows when to ignore him.

Where did Glazer say he wasn’t involved or he didn’t talk to Bowles about how to tell time?

I also appreciate Todd Bowles hiring a Game/Clock management guru because Todd Bowles stinks at Game/Clock management.

WOW! He finally did something concrete to help him “coach better.” I hope it really works.

My biggest and most consistent gripe with the clock management is how much Todd hoards timeouts. There are so many instances when I’m screaming at the TV “Call a timeout!!!”. It’s often in front of the 2 minute warning, or stopping the clock from bleeding down to one last and much shorter end of game possession (2024 playoff game) or calling a timeout when there’s a chance for a Hail Mary (2023 playoff game)
If that gets fixed it should add at least a couple of wins.

If this story is accurate, it can mean only one thing.
Todd Bowles is an avid (new) reader of JBF and is responding to the numerous comments regarding his time management in games.
I kinda wish he had started reading a couple years earlier!

Ridiculous. The guy couldn’t figure out what to do under pressure when it counted. Couldn’t figure out when to change up his defensive game plan even after repeatedly getting abused by opposing teams. Why are we pretending? Kick him upstairs and clear the way for a new DC to report to him.

Translation – the team performed to its lowest possible win total considering the offense’s performance. Defense and game management lost 6 winnable games including the Redskins game.
Jason and ownership give feedback to their employees. The old “job performance review.” Todd gets one of those, too.
Good to see Todd is following through on his action step(s).

It’s clear that Bowles reads my comments on JoeBucsFan, and took my advice.
You’re welcome. 😉

Loving the comments!
Todd is a stand-up guy and did the right thing. Love hearing that the Glazers stand behind him too.

Hats off to Coach Swiss Cheese for hiring someone to help with this, regardless of whether the Glazers said anything or not.
Count me among the minions who stood up in her living room Sunday after Sunday and screamed at the TV for a timeout, etc.

I’m hoping this new hire isn’t just responsible for advising him when to take time outs. While that would be valuable my hope is that he’s also advising him in analytics regarding when it benefits him to keep the offense out on the field to play to the game flow and allow the opportunity to score more points.

Not sure if I would have found a Clock/Game Management guru coming from an inept organization such as the Jaqs.

I could have done the same job with a push to talk phone and a few hundred dollars a week. It’s really not that hard.
