Bill Parcells “Til This Day” Counseling Todd Bowles, Aaron Glenn

April 9th, 2025

Hall of Fame head coach Bill Parcells, known in Miami as the big boss who passed on drafting Matt Ryan when the Dolphins needed a quarterback, has said previously that Bucs head coach Todd Bowles is one of his “homeboys.”

That hasn’t changed.

Bowles sat down with an official New York Jets podcast recently and was asked about the influence Parcells had on new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn.

Bowles coached for Parcells in Miami and Dallas, and Glenn played for Bowles as a veteran cornerback when Bowles coached the Cowboys secondary. Of course, Glenn was a Pro Bowler for Parcells when he was Jets head coach from 1997-1999.

What caught Joe’s interest is that Bowles said Parcells remains in his ear to this day. Parcells is 83 years old and lives the retired life bouncing between South Florida, upstate New York and horse racing venues.

When Bowles screws up in games, he says he hears about it from Parcells.

“Bill has a huge impact on everybody,” Bowles said. “He does such a great job of teaching. It may be hard teaching at the time, or what you think is hard teaching, but it’s really life lessons and they apply to coaching. And Bill makes sure he does a good job of that. And believe me, anytime [Glenn or I] mess up or he thinks we need something, you’re going to get a text til this day.

“You’re going to get a text, til this day, you’re going to get a text or a phone call from him. And he’s going to just drop a hint of wisdom, and he’s going to let you know and you can carry on and move on from there. But I think Bill is a big influence on [Glenn].

Very cool that Parcells keeps an eye on the Bucs and his friend and protégé Bowles.

It’s also a little ironic. Old school Bucs fans remember that Parcells jilted Team Glazer multiple times when they tried to hire him to coach the Bucs.

Jon Gruden has said publicly that his Bucs-era offensive line coach and offensive coordinator, Bill Muir, was hired by Parcells with a three-year contract to be the Bucs’ O-line coach in 2002, despite Parcells not taking the Tampa Bay head coaching gig. Gruden says he met Muir on his first day on the Bucs job.

The irony of Muir, he had the O-line gelling for the playoffs. The next year they gutted the O-line and it wasn’t nearly as good.

  2. SenileSenior Says:

A neat retroactive perspective regarding where we are today. (P.S I still hold it against Parcells, the way he disrespected us.)

  3. Dewey Selmon Says:

I always thought Parcells looked like he suffered from chronic hemorrhoids.

  4. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Another great read Joe!! reminds me of when I run into my old coaches and mentors in the area where I live who still give me life lessons and wisdom. Can’t take that for granted!! Go Bucs

  5. FilthyAnimal Says:

He only jilted the Glazers once. The first time was with Hugh Culverhouse, who said he felt like he had been “left at the altar.” He then hired Sam Wyche.

Hey Joe Big Bill parcells fan thanks for the article often wondered how he’s staying in touch with the NFL…. Used to love how he would talk to players that was hilarious and he got results…🏈❤️

  7. Ds Says:

Forgot he drafted a tackle over Matt Ryan lol

  8. Gipper Says:

Parcells as like a tough dude. Todd Bowles would have been an All World Coach if he had Lawrence Taylor playing for him. Parcells is mostly bluster. If he messed with the wrong linebacker, old Bill would be picking up his teeth.

  9. Gipper Says:

    acts

  10. Beeej Says:

I wonder if he yelled at him for not going for two against Kansas City

  11. Rod Munch Says:

On a different note… do you realize the Bucs have freed up $31M in cap space over the last week or so – and now have the 10th most cap room in the NFL.

That’s way way more than you need for the draft and to have some left over for injuries.

I brought this up the other day, but Tyreek Hill is doing his normal drama queen act in Miami and wants out – and has also said he wants to stay close to south Florida and praised Baker.

I don’t think the Bucs would go after Hill … but why free up $31M, what’s that for? All that money is coming off future years, so you don’t do this unless you’re going to use it for something. What are the Bucs doing? Everyone speculate.

  12. FilthyAnimal Says:

    Munch,
Yeah, I wondered about that, cause there’s no reason to free up that money unless you plan on using it. Trey Hendrickson maybe?

  13. geno711 Says:

My speculation would be Trey Hendrickson more than Tyreek Hill.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

Trey Hendrickson would be quite the pick-up, and I agree, that would make a lot more sense. With Hill, I just think AB, and the Bucs won a SB with AB playing a huge role in it – even though everyone said he was going to be a distraction and awful and we didn’t need him, etc. But yeah, Hendrickson would be the play if the Bucs could get something done.

  15. Gipper Says:

    geno711,

Trey H. would be great. The Bucs would have a “fearsome foursome” and play the 4-2-5. If they get Hendrickson in a trade and still have 19th, it has to be Emmanwori. Super Bowl here we come. Eagles play zone 40% last year, Denver 39%. Most zone defenses are just “prevent defenses.” They usually prevent victories.

I nearly fell off my chair laughing when I read that line.

If that is the case, it must be an hourly text every day especially on Sundays.

Really got to love how the compliant lapdog media goes about using the spin machine to polish the turd that is Bowles.

    The Big Tuna.

  18. Durango 95 Says:

Those 1987 NY Giants were a very tough physical football team. I’d forgotten about him turning down the Glazers. What I remember was the jilting he gave the Tampa Bay faithful during those gruesome Clulverhouse years. Those of you that were not around during that period really have no idea what a miserable owner that guy was.

Im kinda hoping we take a wr either round 1 or 2. I wouldn’t mind cb in either round 1 or 2. MLB round 3 definitely. Then fill up our backups on safety MLB dline n oline. Would love 2 have a rb as well, let rachaad walk after this season saving 2 or 3 mill in cap. Using this season 2 devolp tucker. Hell licht is so good at picking up under the radar talent or underrated talent that even those picks cud be grabbed in the undrafted pool. Braswell needs a chance 2 develop along with diaby. The reason our young guys don’t develop is because they share playing time with so many other young guys at the same position. I say wr in 1 or 2 is because what’s Godwin like after the injury? Even if he returns 2 form we have a hopeful star at #3 that cud allow Godwin and Evans 2 play in the slot where we know they both can excel. Cb in 1 or 2 because Dean is unreliable. Maybe we unload him 2 a noncontending team. N get a high pick in whatever round 4 (hopeful) or 5 (most likely) but we cud also keep Dean n rotate Dean with the new guy. Keeping Dean fresh. We have 2 at least double dip at MLB give the young guys time 2 learn humble leadership from David before he retires in 1 year or 2 or 3. I’m not sure about the severity of David’s ankle 4 this upcoming season. If licht n bowles have confidence he will be ready week 1 then round 3 is a great round 2 pick 1. Now I haven’t looked at the draft class as closely as some. But jihads shoulder injury is concerning. Taking a dt in round 1 to sit behind kancey and vea wud be a mistake. Rotation I get it but u don’t pick a 1st rounder 2 rotate.

I Remember when Culverhouse bought that regional airline in new England and expanded to Florida. First interview after landing and asked why he did it on a ”
questionable” airlines he replied with and answer that included, “I’m not use to failure with my businesses”. At the time the Bucs were the laughter of the league. Both the Bucs and the airlines cratered until the Glazier’s rescued the Bucs. Could have Been the Memphis Bucs. The airlines went out of business.

  21. Geno711 Says:

Gipper. Thanks for the shout out. I do not watch every team so don’t know exactly how different teams play man or zone. 33rd team that Ronde Barber is associated with says this.

Since 2020, 66.4% of dropbacks have been against a zone-coverage scheme.

So I am not saying how you looked up Eagles and Broncos are wrong. Just giving you my perspective.

  22. ballwasher61 Says:

If all you can do is trash the coach troll after troll go find a damn bridge and 3 billy goats and make a home dude. I get some of the bad things but enough already. I don’t want to trash anyone but goddamn enough is enough child.

  23. Scott Says:

Parcells second best coach ever,Andy reid first, parcells got more with less ,look at his coaching tree payton, bellichick, couglin, late 90s he took 1 win jets team and had them within 1 half of sb in his second year

  24. Gipper Says:

    Scott,

Kind of hard to overlook Paul Brown and Vince Lombardi. Trouble with today is most don’t have enough perspective.

  25. Adrnagy Says:

Todd is easy to read. He’s adaptable. He adapted to Lichtenstein and glazer. He’s blended is personality from mentors. Tough and soft. He’s neutral.
Bad situation in jets. Bad when he took over from arians. But he’s putting his stamp.
I see Bowles taking the Bucs to the SB in 1-3 years.

  26. Aqualung Says:

    ballwasher61 yer killing me!

  27. Tye Says:

To bad Bowels isn’t a winner like Parcells!

  28. stpetebucsfan Says:

No Tye too bad he hasn’t won enough for YOU with a depleted lineup after the SB cap cost.

Bottom line…He HAS WON a Division title and reached the playoffs every season he’s been in charge!!! He is now the Bucs 3rd WINNINGEST Coach in history behind only BA, TD and AHEAD OF CHUCKY!!!

Just compare those two career records. Chucky comes to a SB ready team and does his job. Great. Then when it came time for the rebuild Chucky was a losing coach. Bowles OTOH SURVIVED!!!

So two questions Tye because your view is expressed daily by different posters here.

Is there ANYTHING Todd can do this season that would change your mind?
Do you hope he does or would you rather see him lose?

  29. garro Says:

I heard he was signed to cach here this year….Oops

    Go Bucs!
