Myles Garrett Will Stay In Cleveland

March 9th, 2025

Monster edge rusher Myles Garrett will not be a Buccaneer in 2025.

Garrett, per ESPN, just signed a monster contract extension that will put $40 million per year in his pocket with $123.5 million in guaranteed money.

And he doesn’t even play quarterback.

Wow.

Garrett had been asking for a trade and, well, money seemed to soothe him. Screw playing for contender. The bag is super fat and Garrett flushed his desire to play for a winner the way Joe would jump head first on a tray of Hooters boneless wings.

Garrett’s new contract, on the heels of edge beast Maxx Crosby restructuring for record money with the Las Vegas Bradys last week, surely means Trey Hendrickson will want at least $30 million plus this season. The NFL sacks leader was given permission by the Bengals to seek a trade.

Hendrickson, with 17 1/2 sacks in each of the past two seasons, is due around $16 million in 2025.

On this peaceful Sunday, Joe will just add that there’s a reason teams are willing to pay so much for edge rushers, though one could counter by saying there’s a reason Cleveland and Vegas have been perennial losers.

Between Garretts and Watsons contract I don’t how they pay the rest of the team.

  2. FilthyAnimal Says:

He wasn’t coming to Tampa anyway.

  3. Steve Says:

So much for only playing for the Super Bowl and not money

  4. Allen Lofton Says:

They pay because finding the. Males Garrett’s are like winning the Lotto grand prize

Got to keep looking through the draft. Happy hunting Mr. LIGHT

  5. Marine Buc Says:

Cleveland is the prime example of how to ruin a franchise.

The GM is a total incompetent embarrassment…

You are now paying two players who don’t want to be there hundreds of millions of dollars.

    Stupid is what stupid does.

  6. BucsFan81 Says:

That’s crazy money. 1 guy can’t make the whole team.

  7. unbelievable Says:

Hendrickson and Landry both gonna get paid an insane amount of money… and it won’t be by the Bucs.

  8. Allbuccedup Says:

Theres always Azeez Ojulari one year prove it deal.

  9. Kenton Smith Says:

You can bet alot of teams would have given an awful lot to get Myles Garrett. Cleveland could have cleaned up alot of their mistakes. Wonder if that ever occurred to the brain trust up there in Cleveland?

  10. Allbuccedup Says:

Agree with Marine Buc the Browns GM is terrible. If they draft Saunders as there new QB hes going want the moon after his rookie contract is up.

  11. ElderPirate Says:

Edges are a grossly overvalued position now. Its not like QB where paying them more than 50 million now is just the standard. Paying an Edge 40 million means you have 4 less Lavonte Davids on defense.

We may be seeing a time where GMs start managing and building their teams to depend less on Edges. Maybe more investments on interior Dline and ILB or Nickel Corners that can blitz.

Its a money game and I just don’t see a team able to compete for the Superbowl tying themselves down with such a massive contract.

  12. ReeeBarrr Says:

    Good

  13. Lt. Dan Says:

I’m okay with it. The cost would have been too prohibitive. He’s just one guy. He goes down with a boo-boo then what?

  14. Tbbucs3 Says:

Mack for a bargain deal doesnt sound so bad after that contract

  15. JA Says:

I don’t understand guys like Garrett.
For a few million less, why not play for a contender? Either way he is set financially for several lifetimes. Why not enjoy this one to the max by competing for a Lombardi?
Dunno. Maybe it’s me, but few things in life beat winning, especially when financial matters are no longer an issue.

  16. Cobraboy Says:

Whenever a team says to a star player, “Sure, go ahead and find a trade,” those words should be read as sarcasm.

  17. BuxfaninTX Says:

    Von Miller released by Bills

  18. #1bucsfan Says:

I get it but at the same time they spent so much money on a 1 player when the team as a whole isn’t making the playoffs. What’s the point ?

  19. MadMax Says:

The more I watch vids on James Pierce jr. the more i like. Hes falling for a stupid reason but i thought he was out of reach. Now its looking like he might be there. Emmanwori will get scooped up by miami. So if James or Campbell are there at 19, i say go for it. Green might fall to the 2nd for other reasons i wont get into.

  20. Allbuccedup Says:

Tom Brady took less money than a lot of other QB’s so his team could add good players around him. He was thinking of Super Bowls not being the highest paid player at his position. Players with that mentality are few and far between.

  21. Saskbucs Says:

I still think complacency is a disease and I don’t want it near our front office but it’s become more clear that these edge rushers are getting priced out of our current range.

Surely Mack and some of these guys will be much cheaper based on age and production no where near Crosby, Garrett, Hendrickson… but we have a lot of dumb GMs across the league making Lichts job tougher.

Not to say those top 3 guys don’t deserve a lot of money, but they are the top guys outside Parsons and other GMs are gonna pay guys like Sweat way too much.

  22. Allbuccedup Says:

Ok Joe waiting for Gerald Mccoy article Licht go get Von Miller!!!

  23. Fred McNeil Says:

Allbuccedup, Baker seems to be willing to work with the team a bit. After last year he could cry for more money and probably get it. He is worth more than $30 mil by far. If he plays like that again this year he will be worth more than the $40 mil unguaranteed he will get next year.

  24. Fred McNeil Says:

McCoy probably already had it typed up.

  25. SB~LV Says:

Drafting the right ILB will make a huge difference in the pass rush!
Of course we gotta still drafting edge rushers.
This time next week we will have real stuff to talk about.

I still see the NEED for a explosive WR, we don’t have that threat and the league is that kind of game these days. ME and CG are excellent WR but neither are explosive, and both are on the back nine of their careers

  26. BA’s Red Pen Says:

The signing takes a little heat off Licht but he better do something about the Edge, the evidence is clear.

  27. Aqualung Says:

ROTFL – another example of the Browns being brown. They’re called the Browns for a reason. The smart move would have been to trade him for the king’s ransom and admit you’re rebuilding. Instead they’re gonna suck harder and he will be demanding a trade again in a year with that fat contract dragging behind him.

  28. Gipper Says:

If there was any doubt how stupid Browns ownership/management is, this deal removes all doubt. No way the Browns can be competitive with Watson and Garrett deals. They, also, way overpaid for an aging offensive line. Garrett is one of the best defenders on the NFL, but that isn’t enough to make this team competitive. They still need to come up with a QB for this season. The usual suspects like Sam Darnold, Kirk Cousins, Aaron Rodgers aren’t going to play for free. Maybe they’ll ask Tampa if they want to part with Baker for a couple of years #1 picks? Don’t think Bucs would go for that deal and certain that Baker would retire rather than play again for those losers.

  29. C-spann4 Says:

    Bucs ain’t serious

  30. Steven007 Says:

This makes a signing like Matthew judon much closer to what they will do.

  31. Mobucs Says:

What happened says a lot about the Browns and a lot about Garrett. It’s why I followed Baker to Tampa and would have been disappointed if the Bucs had wasted money on Garrett. Can you imagine Garrett suiting up next to Lavonte
    David?

  32. Brian in St Pete Says:

Garrett was never leaving Cleveland. It would have cost them more to trade him than to keep him. It’s obvious that they now have him an offer he couldn’t refuse or he was always playing hardball for a ludicrous payday. Guys, he was never going anywhere. Some of us said this months ago.

  33. Allbuccedup Says:

Fred McNeil Baker is better than most hopefully with another good year Licht will offer to extend his 40 mil next year to another three year deal.

  34. Jeffs grandpa Says:

0.0% chance he was coming to Tampa anyways

  35. FrontFour Says:

Wow, are they stupid or what.

  36. Redzone Says:

Mack will not be a bargain deal – looking more and more likely the Bucs rely on in-house improvement – now my greatest hope is that they don’t overspend on a scrub and get lucky in the draft

  37. Todd Bowls Says:

    (1) what is the reason that James Pierce is falling?
    (2) Joe can you get Bucs draft guru to do an article on the top edge rushers be available at the Bucs first or second round picks?

  38. adam from ny Says:

letting garrett get away was detrimental to the core fan base of a rock bottom divisional team…

they’re going no where anyway…with balt, pitt and the bengals way ahead of them…

so losing garrett deflates the fanbase of an already ultra deflated franchise…

garrett backed them into a corner – so they gave him the mega bag…

if we want a good edge guy, it’s gonna be more expensive than ever before…salaries are going thru the roof…

i never thought crosby or garrett woud warrant these type of contracts…

our winfield contract…or dean…etc etc…don’t seem like much all of a sudden

  39. MadMax Says:

Pierce Jr. is falling because theres “rumors” he takes off plays and doesnt go at it enough….stupid if you ask me. I say draft him, show him how incentives work and pound some work ethic into him….he’ll be fine, i have no doubt….glad hes falling a little though for our sake….thats who we need since Emmanwori and probably Campbell will be off the board at 19.

  40. MadMax Says:

If all 3 are gone, trade down and get Jahdae.

  41. DBS Says:

Surprise! He’s not coming here. Well it’s not really a surprise to most of us.

  42. MadMax Says:

Im liking Jordan Burch too if hes there when we pick in the 2nd…hes a big boy and can move….he just needs proper coaching.

  43. Ben Says:

Sad that Garrett values money over winning. The Browns are a dumpster fire. Careers go to die, good thing Mayfield was allowed to walk.

  44. DungyDance Says:

I think guys in the league care more about the status of being the highest paid than the actual money. So maybe not quite all about the dough.

  45. Ben Says:

Goes to show that legit edge rushers are diamonds, and if you habe one, you dont let them go. If you have an opportunity to get one, you go get them. Give your head a shake JL, you have two good ones on the table. Hendrickson, Landry. 📞

  46. Winny Testaverde Says:

    Repost…but applicable:

Sounds like Mack is likely out. Hendrickson may be the best viable option via trade. That guy is a difference maker. The Bungles need to pay 2 receivers top dollar now…and with Burrow…they likely can’t afford the receivers and Hendrickson. May be time for an all-in moment. For old timers like myself, this could make up for the high pick Tampa gave the Bungles for Jack Thompson aka The Throwin’ Samoan. 🙂

  47. Oxycondomns Says:

hopefully bucs can hit on the draft these salaries getting ridiculous

  48. stpetebucsfan Says:

Poor Trey Hendrickson. Imagine having to scrape by on just 16 Million $$$.

I don’t know how these guys do it! They must really know how to stretch a dollar,

  49. DungyDance Says:

Take a look at Von Miller’s contract when the Bills signed him, and then take a look at what the Bills just did today.

  50. Tony Says:

IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT. We seem to be happy with it all. Zadarius Smith, Khalil Mack, Von Miller, DeMarcus Lawrence & Dre Greenlaw are the ones out there to at least consider because they’re losing out on everyone else AGAIN.

  51. Tony Says:

Harold Landry would be worth considering, too! Who cares how they are as long as they can help the team improve.

  52. Beeej Says:

Za’Darius Smith is now in play, Lions just released him. He had
9 sacks last year between his 2 teams–(they brought him in because of the Hutchinson injury)

  53. Durango 95 Says:

Beyond the incompetence my heart goes out to Cleveland Browns fans. They know pain and losing like no other. These people from that area grew up in the heart of football country, live in an area you would not want your worst enemy to live in and have been the most abused fanbase known to anyone. We Bucs fans no nothing when it comes to suffering compared to these people. Had a good buddy, tough guy, ex-military, body builder, blue collar, good guy. Brought to tears watching the Browns fumble their way out of an AFC championship back in the late 80’s. Just imagine the Bucs being moved out of Tampa in the middle of the night. I’m talking moving trucks. That s(p)it it ain’t no joke. Anyway Myles Garrett is going to continue to sack some folks and get paid huge dollars for doing it. Will this team ever get themselves someone that can bring the heat off the edge? The wait continues.

  54. DunkinDFDubya Says:

Good for him for getting a king’s ransom of cash. He must like being free in early January to spend that cash.

  55. 2 thumbs up Says:

With $123 million guaranteed he don’t have to sack anybody.

  56. Gotti-Dog-05-20-84 Says:

    “Brian in St Pete Says:

The cap hit keeping him……$16 million
The cap hit trading him…….$36 million

Cleveland was never going to absorb that….
It’s questionable if Garrett would have meshed in the Bucs locker room…
Somethings in life are best left on the shelf no matter how nice they are…

  57. Hodad Says:

You are better off just throwing picks at edge rushers, and hope you hit on one. If you hit on a 1st round edge you get them cheap for four years.

  58. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Tony

Nothing could be done today. These teams are re-signing before the first deadline.

  59. Simeon4HOF Says:

Surely we will hear of JL signing Godwin any moment now

  60. DunkinDFDubya Says:

Bottle of Eagle Rare to Joe when he announces the Godwin resigning. Or maybe the Hendrickson to Bucs trade.

  61. StickinUp4Centers Says:

    Landry to the Pats

  62. BPBucsfan Says:

Landry not coming either, according to ESPN, he’s reuniting with Mike Vrabel in New England.

  63. Leopold Stotch Says:

Yeah… We lost out on Landry

  64. BPBucsfan Says:

    Judon signing in 3..2..1…

  65. Winny Testaverde Says:

Judong looks washed. One or two lucky plays last year at most for Atlanta.

  66. BPBucsfan Says:

I agree about Judon, he’s just the “bargain bin ” player that Licht looks for. I have to razz everyone about it.

  67. Alstott up the gut Says:

I hope the Davante Adams contract is favorable for a Godwin contract in the teens for 3 years! I would love to hear this news before the day ends!

  68. Saskbucs Says:

We won’t go for Hendrickson, too expensive.

Mack, Ojulari, Browning (?), Ossai… are last options imo.

Judon, Bosa both washed. From everything I am seeing Landry wasn’t the answer either. Could obviously be proven wrong but these guys have lost their pop I think. Basically Shaq Barrett and we love him but he ain’t it anymore.

  69. Simeon4HOF Says:

Bucs seem content being above average again. We got Bowles. No Chris. No Edge. Long as we win NFC South huh.

Not feeling Jason Licht lately. Not one bit. Sounding mum on #14, scared to trade a future draft pick, Talking bout Diaby shoulda had 15 sacks and Chris Braswell the next LT.

Stfu and do your job JL

  70. Badbucs Says:

Sure is getting harder and harder to be a GM these days. The salaries are escalating faster than the cap. 60 for QB, 30 for WR, 40 for edge 30s for OT, etc. It’s out of control. You have
to build everything around the draft now and let most of the high priced guys go as they get older. The days of keeping a team together are about over. You’ll only be able to keep a select few. The draft will be everything. Enjoy ME13, LVD and Godwin while you can.
