Last Chance U for Devin White?
Is the Las Vegas Strip now the Boulevard of Broken Dreams for former Bucs star Devin White?
The former Bucs star linebacker will take one more roll of the dice to flip the switch and revert his career to one of the top linebackers in the game.
On Friday, former Bucs quarterback Tom Brady and former Bucs assistant general manager John Spytek, the new shot-callers of the Raiders, decided to give their former Bucs comrade a Last Chance U and signed White to a one-year prove-it deal.
White, 27, seems like he’s on his final poker hand to remain in the NFL. The Bucs let White walk after the 2023 season, five years after he was drafted No. 5 overall.
After the Bucs cut bait with White, he signed with the Eagles.
The soon-to-be Super Bowl champs thought so much of White he was released in October. Three weeks later, White signed with the Texans.
In Houston, White started one game. He was not injured.
White’s demise has been one of the strangest falls from grace Joe has ever seen. In 2020, White, after missing the wild card round game at Washington allegedly due to The Sickness, White returned to play against the Saints and for a three-game stretch ending with a Bucs’ Super Bowl win, White played linebacker about as well as you can expect from a human being.
White played out of his mind, even better than Ray Lewis when the Crows won the Super Bowl following the 1999 season. No one dreamed at the time that postseason would be the pinnacle of White’s career, unless he has a stunning comeback.
White gradually became less and less effective after the Bucs won the Super Bowl to the point that he became more distraction than asset. White ended his Bucs days making news by whining for a new contract, demanding a trade and being called out by Bucs great Warren Sapp for loafing, not by doing anything special on the field of play.
White bottomed out with the Bucs when he was a healthy scratch in a key game at Green Bay in December 2023.
This is a win-win move by Brady and Spytek. They know how he can play. Perhaps the two know something about White’s background that they can get him to snap out of his funk?
Otherwise, Joe has a hunch if White rolls snake eyes in Vegas and doesn’t work out with the Raiders, he will become a full-time horseman.
Just an amazing tailspin of a once-promising career.
