Kyle Trask And The Raiders
March 1st, 2025So the Raiders made their move this week on 37-year-old pocket passer quarterback Matthew Stafford and failed. He’s staying with the Rams.
That told Joe that new Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly was/is preparing an offense for a dropback passer.
(Why Raiders football czar Tom Brady didn’t demand his team at least interview Byron Leftwich for the playcaller opening is unclear.)
So perhaps Kelly will have an offense that suits a Stafford-style QB, a big-armed guy with very limited mobility. That sounds to Joe like an ideal offense for pending Bucs free agent QB Kyle Trask.
Todd Bowles and Jason Licht each said this week they’d like to have Trask return for his fifth Tampa Bay season, but Trask likely wants to play where he has more opportunity.
Might that be Vegas? Brady spent two years with Trask and new Raiders GM John Spytek served a four-year team around Trask in Tampa. He turns 27 next week and has never started a game in the NFL.
The Raiders have veteran QB Gardner Minshew under contract along with Aidan O’Connell, their 2023 fourth-round pick. Minshew, however, could become a salary cap casualty.
Will anyone but the Bucs want Mr. Trask? Remember, he was “this close” to beating out Baker Mayfield in 2023 Bucs training camp.
March 1st, 2025 at 3:36 pm
I think the Raiders will want to improve at the QB position. So, probably not.
March 1st, 2025 at 3:50 pm
Do they need a new Gatorade mixer?
March 1st, 2025 at 3:51 pm
Honestly maybe as a backup but I feel like they need to cut ties with Trask and the past. Id really like the team ti draft a young, mobile successor to back up Mayfield.
March 1st, 2025 at 3:53 pm
Brady didn’t witness Trask’s improvement the last two preseasons, but Spytek sure did. I believe the guy can be an NFL starter
March 1st, 2025 at 4:02 pm
This is interesting.
March 1st, 2025 at 4:06 pm
Trask woukd look great mopping the floors at the new stadium in vegas.
March 1st, 2025 at 4:09 pm
The Raiders lack of interest in the cult hero will speak louder volumes than any snarky commentary that realistic football fans might offer.
March 1st, 2025 at 4:10 pm
Grover called this 1st a while back……do not b surprised if Brady snaps up Trask.
March 1st, 2025 at 4:12 pm
Maybe the Panters too. Trask is better than their little Shrimp.
March 1st, 2025 at 4:15 pm
Good call Beeej, I think Pete Caroll would take Spytek’s opinion over Brady due to the last 2 years, I personally don’t think with of of them think Trask can play lol. Trask might be here next year and become the new Ryan Griffin

It has always made sense to me that an ideal backup QB would be similar in style to the starting QB. “A poor-man’s Baker Mayfield” so to speak.. A QB that emulates the style of the starter. Perhaps a Taylor Heinicke kind of thing. As for Trask I would like to see the guy get a shot some where he can get some playing time.
March 1st, 2025 at 4:24 pm
The Leftwich and Trask combo should team up again with Brady’s Raiders.
March 1st, 2025 at 4:36 pm
KT is a formidable clipboard holder! Best wishes to him!
March 1st, 2025 at 5:06 pm
It wouldn’t surprise me if they gave him a chance.
March 1st, 2025 at 5:08 pm
Don’t count out Jacksonville.
It depends on how much coach Duuuvaaaal thinks Trask can help install his system.
March 1st, 2025 at 5:10 pm
It’d be cool to see Trask get a real opportunity to start. We really don’t know until we know. That said I’d be ok seeing him come back at the right price.
March 1st, 2025 at 5:20 pm
Maybe Kyle would like to go to a team with a fragile starter. Maybe unfairly, but don’t see anybody eyeing him as a starter right now. Maybe he could go to the Chargers or the Jags or the Panthers and get a shot when their starters inevitably get hurt.
March 1st, 2025 at 5:23 pm
Carroll will build a good defense, and want to run the ball. Trask wouldn’t be asked to carry the team. Another Raider possibility could be Wilson.
March 1st, 2025 at 5:33 pm
Potentially good deal for Trask and maybe a good deal for Raiders. Hope he gets his chance and wish him well. If not, backup QB job in the NFL isn’t bad. You hold a clipboard for 15 years, your brain stays intact, and you get paid a nice salary and then pension.

Beeej Says:

————————————————————————————
I also believe he can be an NFL starter.
That said, to be successful, he needs to be on a team with a decent offense. If he goes to a team like the Titans or Giants it will be ugly.
If he leaves in free agency he needs to be careful where he goes. If he picks the wrong team it can make his career prospects even worse than they are now.
March 1st, 2025 at 5:51 pm
Who said Trask has a big arm?
March 1st, 2025 at 6:06 pm
Maybe Carroll will bring Tom out of retirement?🤣
March 1st, 2025 at 6:08 pm
Kyle hasn’t made any improvements since in the NFL. He married some girl started a family and that’s great for him, but for the team what has he done? Nothing. No team should sign him. I’m just keeping it real and being honest.
Bucs Fans here is my pick:
Dillon Gabriel QB Oregon
He can be my backup QB for Baker Mayfield.
Also suppose we have to pick a punter in the draft late. The FSU punter was named All American with an average boot of 49.5 yards per kick. Maybe get him or who else another kid from Oregon. Lol
March 1st, 2025 at 6:10 pm
I’d like to see Trask get a chance to start somewhere. Mostly because I would like to see if he is really as good as all the Trask fanboys claim he is. My personal opinion is that the game has changed to favor mobile RPO type quarterbacks and he might struggle in that type of offense, so he probably needs to be very careful where he ends up. Should be interesting…..
March 1st, 2025 at 6:19 pm
QBs have to mobile even if not mobile. Many QBs out of college just can’t do that though. So that is the problem. You can tell right away on tape what kinda QB these guys are. It’s really not that complicated.
I feel like most of these QBs are failed by their coaches. Many of these guys are not good enough but had potential of being good enough. So why do they fail? It’s simply because of coaching staff not pushing them into greatness.
With Kyle Trask though he never was gonna be good. I think we all know that now even his wack gator fanboys. Lol
March 1st, 2025 at 6:23 pm
Perfect opportunity for Trask to get beat out by the Raiders rookie draft pick, whoever that ends up being. And Minshew, who they would like at 2 for his experience. Back to 3rd string it is!
March 1st, 2025 at 6:38 pm
I think he should stay put ,, right here,,, make a few million and be ready to play if called upon! Not sure he would do much for the Raiders and as far as Jax,,, he would be running for his life there,,, Liam’s offense gets the QB punished ,,, Does anyone think Lawrence won’t be on IR come week 8 ,,,,
If he goes to LV I would take Minshew,,, a similar lesser version of BM that could get us through a 4 week stretch if necessary
March 1st, 2025 at 6:45 pm
Maybe Trask can go back to the Gators. He’ll definitely be starting again.
March 1st, 2025 at 6:46 pm
Kyle Trask was better than Baker Mayfield in training camp 2023 and we all know it . Baker Mayfield was gifted the staring job and that’s a fact and that don’t take away from him playing good last season. But we ain’t winning a Superbowl with Baker Mayfield. He can get us to the playoffs in trash conference but he chokes in the playoffs . And he has shown that the past 2 years.

Oneilbuc,
Mayfield has the highest QB playoff rating of any QB ever including Brady. Mayfield will take Bucs to several SB’s over the next 4 years. You are confused. Mayfield will make it clear for you soon.
March 1st, 2025 at 7:05 pm
Gipper. I hope he does because so far he’s been choking!!
March 1st, 2025 at 7:08 pm
He needs to go to a team that will play him. But the wat Baker takes hits they might him around.
March 1st, 2025 at 7:10 pm
watch russell wilson wind up a raider
March 1st, 2025 at 7:30 pm
Be real he really wasn’t that close to beating out Baker. If they had faith in Trash they would of never brought in Baker. Let him walk whoever is Second string will be better than trash
March 1st, 2025 at 7:43 pm
He and Jameis can battle it out in Cleveland lol.
Where all the Trask fans at
March 1st, 2025 at 8:16 pm
I mean has Trask ever really gotten a fair shot at being a starter. I liked what I saw in the preseason. Who knows , he may be all world. Look at Sam Darnold this year in the right situation. Then again he may suck. Worth a couple million dollar chance in the 60 mil NFL QB contract world
March 1st, 2025 at 8:39 pm
I think alot of people on here are forgetting about Michal Pratt he is on the team. He did not play last year as a Rookie but the Bucs were looking at drafting him just before Green Bay took him in the 4th rd. I think he will end up being Bakers back-up.
March 1st, 2025 at 9:56 pm
Trask has made over 5 million bucks riding the pine for the Bucs.
I’m not really worried if he gets “his chance” or not. He’s being paid a kings ransom to carry a clipboard. I’m happy for him.
March 1st, 2025 at 10:07 pm
Predictably, this story got all kinds of comments – Trask lovers, Trask haters and everything in between. You know it is the deadest part of dead season when this is even worth talking about. It’s like caring whether or not the Bucs re-sign K.J. Britt. Oh, but Trask was a Gator, so there’s that …
March 1st, 2025 at 10:09 pm
Oneilbuc you are 100% correct and believe me baker doesn’t want trask to stay because he knows if he gets injured for a few weeks and trask comes in then he will not be the starter, all of you baker worshipers I would say bow down and kiss his ring but he will never have one unless he wins it from the side line.
March 1st, 2025 at 10:30 pm
David. What you saying is not true we all know Kyle Trask was better in that training camp. You can easily go back and look it up even Joe said he was a hair better than Baker Mayfield. Even till this day no one at one bucs place or the coaches has admitted that Baker Mayfield was better than Trask . Baker Mayfield was a business decision not a football decision. And all you have to do is look how long it took Bowles to start Bucky Irvin over Rashard White. There goes your proof and plus we know and have seen that Sean Tucker is better than Rashard White and yet Bowles refuse to let him start over Rashard White. Todd Bowles would rather lose with the players he likes regardless if they’re not better than guys behind them.
March 1st, 2025 at 11:17 pm
let trask walk…he got derailed by the brady arrival and was never in the mix for anything…
he was livin’ in oblivion in his tampa years…
and it’s really no ones fault…
we got the goat and everything had to be goatly moving forward…
young trask was just qb room fodder for a long time…
he might be ready now, but he probably wants the tampa chapter in his book closed too
March 1st, 2025 at 11:18 pm
oddly enough, i think he sat a lot early on in college too…then came on late in his college days…
maybe he will mirror that in the nfl too…we shall see
March 1st, 2025 at 11:46 pm
Trask had an incredible run with the Gators. His duel with Joe Burrows was epic. He’s never had a shot in the NFL to evaluate his level of play or what his ceiling might be. I get that Trask has fans, but I don’t get the Trask haters. I hope he walks and lands with a team that will give him a shot. It ain’t gonna happen for him in Tampa and I’m afraid some day in the not too distant future, he will come back to haunt the Bucs.
March 2nd, 2025 at 2:47 am
Trask? L O L
March 2nd, 2025 at 4:41 am
If they want him, let him go. It would be good career move for him. Kyle will be 27 this week and it’s probably time for him to make that move. The Bucs have kept him so they definitely see something in him. This will also give the Bucs a chance for a rookie backup that could be consistent if needed and for when Baker decides to retire. Until then, Baker is our number one QB. He has done a great job.
Agree with others, if not the Raiders maybe the Panthers or Cleveland would be interested in Kyle. Doubt the Jags. They have their QBs pretty much set.
March 2nd, 2025 at 6:27 am
No one really knows for certain what trask is. Is he a boom or is he a bust? He’s got years under Brady and mayfield. That in itself should get him a 5-10 million one year prove it to me deal from a qb needy team. Which is half the teams in this nfl give or take.
March 2nd, 2025 at 7:44 am
Oneill
“Kyle Trask was better than Baker Mayfield in training camp 2023 and we all know it.”
ALL? Really? How about YOU Oneill. I certainly NEVER held that OPINION!!!
I haven’t read or heard a SINGLE STATEMENT from anybody connected with the Bucs or ANY other NFL PROFESSIONAL!!!
I recall reading a post or two from Jjoes where Trask might have had a better SINGLE PRACTICE or two. I’ve read another poster here who believes Bowles was willing to gamble his career on a player that was “beaten out” in practice.
I’ve read NOBODY with NFL cred say the things you say ONeill so perhaps you can dig up a quote from somebody who counts!
March 2nd, 2025 at 8:16 am
Onielbuc and Mike keeping the sad sad Kyle Trask fan club going….
March 2nd, 2025 at 9:14 am
Kt should go. He is not starting. Draft one of the not top 2 Qbs on day 2
March 2nd, 2025 at 9:35 am
Mayfield was handed the starting job. Trask beat him out in the 2023 preseason. Have you noticed when Mayfield gets dinged up he tries to get back in as soon as possible. He knows Trask will show he should be starting. There’s a reason Mayfield has been on 5 teams.
March 2nd, 2025 at 11:07 am
If Baker is out for significant time this team is probably cooked for the season. What you want in a backup is a guy who is cheap and can win a game sometimes. Pratt is probably as much of that if not more than Trask. He is mobile and a gamer which is probably more important in a backup QB (watch his game in the Cotton bowl to see what I mean) than a strong arm. Bucs should let Trask walk, roll with Pratt and save some cap money for other positions that matter a lot more.
March 2nd, 2025 at 1:10 pm
Trask is talented but doesn’t seem to have the “it” factor. (kind of seems like an introvert)
March 2nd, 2025 at 2:13 pm
Facts are facts some of y’all are just Baker Mayfield fans .
March 2nd, 2025 at 2:18 pm
Tbbuc3. It’s not about being a Trask fan it’s about telling the truth. And the truth is that Kyle Trask was better in that training camp than Baker Mayfield and you go look it up on Joebucfan. Baker Mayfield can you to the playoffs in a bad division but I don’t think he can get you to the Superbowl and from the past 2 years he hasn’t shown he gets you to the NFC Championship. He chokes and the playoffs when the game is on the line. So until he stops doing that he ain’t proved to me you can win a championship with him as your quarterback.
March 2nd, 2025 at 2:22 pm
Stetebucs. Joe admitted it that he was a hair better than Baker Mayfield and not to mention I remember Baker Mayfield had 9 picks to Kyle Trask 1 with both players going with the ones. Nooooo, Joe wrote that Trask was better than Mayfield on certain camp days. — Joe
And as far as Todd Bowles he’s not a super bowl HC he’s a DC .
March 2nd, 2025 at 4:24 pm
There’s a lot of abnormal hate on here today for Trask. Considering that your guy is the starter and Trask is the backup, I just don’t see any reason for the hatred. Unless this is a college rivalry thing and Trask beat up on your team.
March 2nd, 2025 at 6:09 pm
Joe. You said he was a hair better and he was but I get it y’all rather lose with Baker Mayfield just to be right about something. Baker Mayfield will never get us a Superbowl . The only thing Baker Mayfield will do is get us to the playoffs and chock in the first or second round just like did the past 2 years. The reason why it takes all 17 games for us to win a trash division is because of the quarterback and coach we have.
March 2nd, 2025 at 7:57 pm
Baker is playing with desperation and that is a dangerous way to play, wanting and needing to win at all costs makes one makes mistakes last 2 years proves that.
March 3rd, 2025 at 12:02 pm
Bowles said the “Competition” would be based on ; not only on completions but on who had the fewest turnovers , and turnovers were reported each day of training camp , and each day Kyle outperformed Mayfield in Completions, fewer fumbles and fewer interceptions, go ahead, look up those reports yourself, but, inspite of those results , Mayfield was gifted the starting job anyway, the reason being Mayfield had already been signed to start , there was no competition , the fix was always in despite Kyle outperforming Mayfield , and what has that gotten us ? The last two years when the rubber met the road, the Bucs get knocked out of the playoffs two years ago when Baker turns over the ball by getting intercepted with two minutes left in the game, and last year We get knocked out when Mayfield fumbles and turns over the ball inside the 20, late in the game, turnovers and protecting the ball do count , a lot! Bowles was on the right track making turnovers a key element of the competition , if there had actually been a competition, unfortunately there wasn’t one,( it will be interesting if Kyle walks, and the Bucs try to sign another qb, what promises will have to be made and what will be believed).
