Jason Licht Gets Praise For Keeping The Band Together

March 27th, 2025

“Who wrote that?”

Now this is refreshing.

Joe is starting to see the same pap creep up from the national media that was overwhelming a year ago: The Bucs are blah and might be second-class NFL citizens for not improving because they just re-signed their own players.

Joe knows this mentality got under the skin of Bucs types. They wanted to know when it became a sin that a good team wanted to keep its own players.

They had a point.

But that’s a big reason why NFL stenographers from outside Florida banged on Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht. He may have kept his team together — but where did they improve, these sophists wanted to know?

Then Licht knocked it out of the park in the draft. That’s what you call improving your team!

Joe read the same tripe recently: With the exception of Jets reject Haason Reddick, the folks claimed, the Bucs only re-signed their own. So where did the Bucs improve?

Well, one guy gets it. Ben Solak of BSPN typed a piece praising Licht for keeping the band together. Imagine, a four-time reigning NFC South champion actually didn’t want to tear apart the team.

I loved: The continuity. You won’t find the Buccaneers on many winners/losers lists, but they grade very highly from me given how well they spent their money. In retaining Bredeson, they got a starting guard for $11 million per year — a huge discount relative to the market for Will Fries and Aaron Banks. In retaining Godwin, they got a high-end WR2 for $22 million per year — an impossible discount relative to what other teams would have spent on him as a low-end WR1.

The best news? The Buccaneers know how Godwin and Bredeson work in their system, so a lot of the uncertainty inherent to free agency is avoided. All 11 starters from their offense last season are back on the roster. That’s great business.

AND, all 11 starters return from an NFL-record-setting offense. Monster difference there.

So again, Joe thought this was refreshing, especially coming from an Eagles fan, which Solak is.

At least one guy in the northeast gets it.

this offense will absolutely be better with another year of experience, Also, if Godwin is healthy, having McMillan next to him will be huge, as he was really struggling early and came on late.

  2. 813BUCBOI Says:

this offense can be the best offense in the nfl by far this year IF baker cuts is TOs in half….

obviously, health is the most important aspect but bakers TOs are 1b lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  3. TRBinCLE Says:

I wonder if our retention rate improved because we made sure ME13 got his1000 yards and the associated bonus.

  4. SlyPirate Says:

    HORRIBLY UNERAPPRECIATED MOVE …

The Bucs win with complimentary football. Real Bucs fans remember how Prime Camarda would save a stalled drive by flipping the field and setting the defense up for success. We lost at least two games because of horrific punting. Riley Dixon is a top 5 punter. This signing is so underappreciated.

  5. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    GO BUCS

  6. ballwasher61 Says:

They make SMART moves not always splashy ones. resigning their best players, back ups, yes the punter, Walker and a few others. Reddick got the most attention but all of these moves have set them up to have a killer draft. Jason has really grown into the best GM in football. And yes rewarding their own lures others here.

  7. ballwasher61 Says:

Jason made that rewarding point to Reddick when he signed. And it says something for Reddick to accept that responsibility to earn a new contract as well

  8. BucVoyager Says:

Everybody knows that when you sign big name free agents from other teams in the off season you win the off season. Like Cousins

  9. Weston Says:

If he stays healthy, just resigning Godwin is like signing a huge free agent. Our offense looked insane when he was out there.

  10. BucDawg Says:

His best move will be when he finally wakes up to the defensive issues and cans the Kamala Harris we have at HC.

1-3 in the postseason and in the worst division in the NFL.

Time to cut the biggest piece of driftwood we have on the team.

    Bowles must go.

  11. WiscoJoe Says:

Extend Mike Evans plz. He needs to be a one jersey guy.

  12. Hearty Dikerson Says:

I absolutely think consistency is a good thing, but at some point you need to take a big swing to put yourself over the top. Thats how we won 2 SBs. The Eagles brought in a parade of FAs last offseason, including big names like Saquan and took chances on outsiders like Baun who turned into an all-pro.

I’d like to see us take more chances. We’ve been ‘running it back’ with the same guys the last few years and the results speak for themselves – slightly above .500 and bounced from the playoffs early.

  13. Beeej Says:

After this season all our indebtedness from the Brady era will be paid off (~$28 million for Shaq/Jensen), we’ll be able to do any manner of stuff

  14. Saskbucs Says:

    It’s been a great offseason.

When is the last time we entered the draft with no glaring needs?

I know there are still “needs” but we could essentially field our 10-7 team tomorrow.

If Bryce Hall comes back looking good, Walker is an upgrade on Britt and Reddick is an upgrade on the edge, we have already improved. Knock this draft outta the park and we are legit SB contenders. Top 5 in everyone’s power rankings by week 6.

  15. Kenton Smith Says:

I certainly am not in position to judge anyone. We’ve all heard that racism stems from ignorance? I think we have, right BucDawg?

  16. Kenton Smith Says:

BucDawg, you would never repeat what you just wrote about Todd Bowles and Kamala Harris in front of the Bucs football team. Rascists are Cowards and there should be NO place for you here!

  17. Teacherman Says:

We overpaid for Brederson. But he’s a team first guy. Licht likes his vibe.

So we can build nasty defense depth this year.

I hope we don’t use 1 pick on offense. No need! TE, WR, RB- set!

Offensive line? Wait til next year.

    QB? No way!

    So?

Safety? Maybe but I like Merriweather as our backup.

    DT, DE, CB, ILB, OLB

Trade down. Trade away 6th and 7th to move up.

Get 6 picks in the first 4 rounds.

We can get a DT, a DE, 2 CB’s, an ILB and an OLB.

  18. Teacherman Says:

2 CB’s to pressure Dean and learn from Zion.

    We only need 1 ILB.

But we need two nasty young D-lineman.

The future of fhe NFL is a defensive line changes like hockey.

It’s all about fresh legs in the 4th quarter.

Vea is 30. Hall is mediocre.

We need two big, nasty interior lineman.

  19. CleanHouse Says:

It’s all up to the first time play caller.

  20. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

Some 5th graders would understand that you don’t make changes to an offense that is Top-5 in the NFL. It doesn’t require a rocket scientist to realize that. 😉

Also, some of the 1st and 2nd year players WILL be better than they were last season. And the o-line will benefit from the continuity.

There are no guarantees because injuries can derail a season, as we know. But the Super Bowl window will be wide open this season if Licht continues to upgrade the defense via the draft and free agency.

  21. Pickgrin Says:

Get em Kenton…. GTFOOH w/ that BS BucDawg

Preach – Teach….. Prioritize bolstering the DLine with an Edge and a DT in the first few rounds.

Our DBs will all look like pro bowlers if this Defensive line can start consistently terrorizing QBs with 4 rushers.

  22. Aqualung Says:

SlyPirate – excellent under the radar observation about the punter.

And Kenton Smith – bravo, sit. Bravo.

  23. Aqualung Says:

    *sir

  24. ATLBucSolar Says:

there is a player that everyone is either forgetting about or don’t know about that came on greatly at the end of the season and the playoffs. Deon Jones is a speedy ILB who will probably start alongside David.

  25. THE MAJORITY Says:

    BucDawg,

    I couldn’t agree more.

Though I still hold out hope that Jason Licht can continue to draft so well that it might actually be able to keep our coach from embarrassing us again in the next tough game we get into!

I’m trying to remember and surely I must be wrong when I proclaim that I can’t remember 1 game last year that when it came down to it that we won. ESPECIALLY because of the head coach!

    Signed,
    The Majority!

  26. Kenton Smith Says:

Hey THE MAJORITY. “I’m trying to remember and surely I must be wrong”. You’re wrong twice dude. You sure are not the majority. And your underused brain doesn’t remember our final game of the season down 20-19 halfway through the 4th quarter fourth down and 8 and Bowles went for it. Perfect pass to McMillan and then another. Gutsy call, big win. Our coach doesn’t embarrass us one bit you twerp. You embarrass yourself enough to go around.

  27. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Kenton

Yup. Cult members are some ignorant fux.
