Jason Licht Gets A “B+” For Hasson Reddick Deal

March 10th, 2025

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Joe cannot yet say the Bucs “signed” edge rusher Hasson Reddick for two reasons.

The first reason is that nothing is official until Wednesday, the start of the new league year.

The other reason is Joe is still in a state of shock the Bucs, of all teams, signed a seasoned, proven edge rusher. It’s an out-of-body experience for Joe. Feels too much like a dream.

Joe hasn’t been this gleefully delirious since Antoine Winfield dropped a deuce on Cheetah Hill in February 2021.

Joe isn’t the only guy who thinks Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht made a crazy good move by signing Reddick to a bargain-basement prove-it deal.

So it is that Seth Walder of BSPN, a guy who never met a number he didn’t like, had to slap a grade on the Reddick signing. Since it’s 2025, every time an NFL team passes gas someone has to slap a grade on it.

Walder likes the move for what it could mean for the Bucs defense and that the Bucs aren’t crippled if Reddick flames out.

Buccaneers signing Edge Haason Reddick
The deal:
One year, $14 million, ($12 million guaranteed)

Grade: B+

…It’s an upside play and I think it’s one worth making. …

The good news for the Bucs? They don’t have to pay that much to find out — only $14 million. And they’re the sort of team that should make this risk. They’ve made the playoffs all three seasons under Todd Bowles but must have some breaks go their way to make a deep run.

If Reddick gets back to the player he was … he’ll be an absolute bargain.

If Reddick is even close to the player he was two years ago, this could have a major ripple effect up and down the defensive front for the Bucs’ pass rush.

Think of what happened when Vita Vea, after missing months with a foot injury, returned to play against the Packers in the NFC title game in January 2021. The Packers simply didn’t have enough bodies to block everyone as Vea owned the inside of the Packers’ offensive line and Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett went nuts because he was no longer double-teamed.

Now, JL has to get the Scattaboo kid out of ASU in the draft (day 2 or 3 if he’s there). Have Mike Alstott announce the pick. Bucky, Scattaboo, and Tiny Mic White would be a fun wrinkle in the offense.

  2. Tbbucs3 Says:

Reddick does give me some “Randy Gregory” vibes….he’ll defintley be stepping on the field for $14 million unlike Gregory, but we’ve also seen plently of vets sign view Tampa as a final career payday where they vacation and mail it in on the field.

  3. Todd Bowls Says:

If you go over to the R/eagles group on Reddit You will see a discussion from Eagles fans (written before today’s signing) how’s the weather the fans wanted Eagles to look into re-signing Hassan Reddick.

You’re a lot of negative comments there concerning Riddick being an undisciplined defender, very horrenda fender, a selfish teammate only after the money and only after QB sacks, allowing a lot of big runs as he solely focused on quarterbacks sacks.

I saw other postings from Eagles fans calling him a locker room cancer and noting he’s now on his 5th team so I’m glad this contract is a one-year prove it deal. If he actually shows up for preseason that will be a step up from Stoner Randy Gregory.

Sounds like he’s best used as a designated pass rusher on obvious passing downs especially with traditional stand in the pocket passer QBs and probably needs to platoon with someone who can play the run.

…if Reddick is even close to the player he was 2 years ago…
    Expect a mid-season hold out

Okay that made me laugh out loud

  6. Saskbucs Says:

    DunkinDFDubya…. no chance.

We have a good 3 headed attack at RB already and still way too many holes on D to worry about RB.

If offensive players are drafted it will be OL or WR.

  7. David Says:

There is no doubt he will have 11 sacks or more with this defensive front and being a team that’s a contender that he wants to play for.
    So pumped.
Yaya is going to seriously benefit from the other side and I would be shocked if he does not get double digits

    LFG!!!!!!!!! To me to Bake!

  8. Truth be Told Says:

This is exactly what the Bucs needed! A bona fide Pass Rusher. Now that Godwin is back, we need Secondary and a LB FA that can come in and play and it will make the Draft a bonus this year. Plug the Holes now via FA and the Draftees will put a nice shot into the Team as well for 2025. We are ready for the Playoffs and a Deep Run already now. Licht is Awesome. Go BUCS!!!

Carlton Davis agrees to 3 year, $60 million with the Patriots 👀 !!

That’s such an insane overpay for Carlton 🤦🏻‍♂️!!

Carlton Davis is the Sam Bradford of corners

    Now!
Who is going to sport #7 in 2025 ?

  14. Marques Says:

He’ll be 31 when the season starts. The grade is C. He’s a rotational piece at best. Not a full time threat on a championship team. We need a lot more then this

  15. Bucfan1988 Says:

TBbucs3, touche’ but Bradford had skills but killed by injuries!!

  16. Lol Says:

Great price. Not in my top 5 of edge rushers I would have wanted but beggers can’t be choosers right?!

  17. Scott Says:

The guy is a washed up bum. Hope I’m wrong but he sucked when he got back to the Jets

  18. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I wonder if they made a play for Mack and Reddick is the plan B? I’ll take it. I have the same concerns as others here, but I have faith that Licht and Bowles wouldn’t let a guy in the building they thought could be a “cancer”. I love the one year deal. Gives them a year to see what Braswell can do.

  19. LJ'sDaddy Says:

Smells like a JPP/Suh type of deal. Remember how those guys did??? Way to go Jason! Go Bucs!!!

    joe:

so does this mean between now and wednesday any other team can come in and simply tell his agent something like this:

“hey we’ll give you 15 mil guaranteed”

and he can just slink away to another team…?

can the bucs basically just be outbid in the next couple of days…?

or is he already somehow committed…?

  21. Joe Says:

“hey we’ll give you 15 mil guaranteed”

In theory, yes. Guess that would make an owner Public Enemy No. 1 with the other owners.

  22. Hearty Dikerson Says:

$14M for a 30 yr old with 1 sack last year is bargain basement?

  23. SlyPirate Says:

Licht isn’t done either. Looking for a stud CB and another MLB next.

This team will be loaded going into the draft. BPA all the way.

  24. rrsrq Says:

We just paid JTS for four years, wish him the best even though he will not be around for Ian to talk about. If he gets double-digit sacks and Yaya improves, then it is an A. Next question, is Shaq able to sign to the practice squad.

  25. Xristos Says:

    Joseph C Simmons

With the comment of the day lol

We are in the age where 14mil is a bargain in sports.I wont put a grade on that.
    Hopefully he can produce.
    Go Bucs

  26. adam from ny Says:

    joe:

yeah…it worries me a bit…it’s a nice prove it price for the year, with 12 guaranteed, to potentially 14…

and with the contracts given to garrett and crosby….and probably hendrickson next….it’s looking really nice in comparison…

yeah hopefully there’s a code of ethics with the owners, because a lot of teams are probably looking at this one thinking i’d pay that price for reddick in a heartbeat too…

i guess wednesday can’t come fast enought now…lol

  27. BucsFan28 Says:

We are setting ourselves up to be able to take the bpa with our first pick. Whether that’s someone like Cambell, Pearce, or my favorite pick Hampton. We now have options.

Also, anyone thinking we are set at rb is crazy. If Bucky gets hurt. We are screwed yet again. White is so overrated and Tucker is clearly not rated by the coaching staff. Hampton is my favorite rb in this class and would give us potentially the best offense in the league. Bucky, Hampton, Evans, Godwin, Otten and McMillan. Good luck defending that every play.

  28. drdneast Says:

Paid to much for a poor character player whose performance is on the bad side of the bell curve. Not good. Looks like another Randy Gregory.

  29. infomeplease Says:

BM6 was getting a bad rap for being undisciplined when he first signed with the Bucs. Look at him now!!!! I for one will let HR show me what he’s got on the field! This is probably the best edge FA the Buc’s could bring in! I’m pumped!!!!! If this team can stay relatively healthy, we will have a lot to cheer for this season!!! LFG!!!

  30. RBUC Says:

I agree with the view of our current RB situation BucsFan28,I only differ with the thinking that realistically Hampton will probably be gone higher than Licht would pull the trigger on a RB. My eye is on Kaleb Johnson from Iowa cause, even thou, he had slower combine 40 than he my have liked and may fall a little his tape doesn’t lie and as a RB he would give the Bucs more than what White brings to the table in the red zone!! In my opinion, increasing our TD %s when in the red zone is where we can improve our running game🚩☠️🏈
