Gregg Rosenthal: Haason Reddick Was A Better Signing Than Joey Bosa
March 19th, 2025
Approval from the cool kids.
A couple of folks who regularly do deep dives on the NFL seem to agree when it comes to the Bucs landing a big fish in the free agency pond last week.
Appearing on Mina Kimes’ podcast, Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com and Kimes discussed edge rushers signed last week, and both are not on board with the Bills shelling out cash to talented but injury-prone Joey Bosa.
Rosenthal stopped just short of saying Bosa is washed because when he did get on the field for the Chargers last year, he was just a part-time player and often played hurt.
Rosenthal thought the Bills would have been better off copying Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.
“I think [Haason] Reddick was a much better guy to take a shot with on a one-year deal than Bosa.”
Kimes was on board.
“I actually like that a lot for the Bucs, too,” Kimes said. “I agree, one year, only $12 [million] guaranteed. Clearly, last year was weird and off [for Reddick], you know? The whole time.
“So I think betting on his potential, I think if he’s anywhere close to what he was before last year, that’s going to be a home run signing for them.”
Absolutely it will be a home run signing for the Bucs if Reddick gets, say, 12 sacks. Joe truly believes that if Reddick has his normal year, he will elevate everyone on the Bucs’ defensive line.
Joe knows some are uneasy about who will play safety next to Antoine Winfield and some want the Bucs to move on from Jamel Dean (that doesn’t look likely right now).
A fierce pass rush is the best medicine for a secondary with question marks.

Joey Bosa looked no more washed than Jordan Whitehead….
Oh wait….
Yup both washed.

Agree on Bosa, but still would like another decent veteran Edge rusher in the rotation. Can’t have too many with the Buc’s pass rushing situation.

Joe … ‘A fierce pass rush is the best medicine for a secondary with question marks.’
Yea verily. And sooner or later Joe’s gonna hop onboard the ‘Bucs NEED another beastly DT/NT to rotate in with Vea to provide a CONSISTENT interior pass rush’. And oh ya, to pick up the slack IF Vea should go down for any number of games.
Personally I think we can get beastly DT/NT this year as low as Rnd 3 or Rnd 4. This draft is relatively deep in DLinemen.

We replaced JTS with Reddick, huge upgrade. We brought back Nelly, have YaYa, and Braswell needs to play more in his second year, hopefully he makes the leap. If he doesn’t drafting an edge at 19 won’t help. Like JTS last year trying to earn a contract Braswell needs to play so we can see if he belongs. That means he has to play, and be given a legit chance to grow. I think having the vet Reddick with his attitude will really help Braz out. What could he learn from JTS? How to run around making little impact? No edge rusher at 19 will make an impact for the Bucs this season. If it has to be defense at 19, ILB, corner, DT.

I think a solid edge guy or defensive line guy could be available to the Bucs at 19. Certain teams always seem to go for the shiny objects on offense.
It would not surprise me if 3 QBs, 1 RB, 3 OL, 3 WR and a TE get selected before the Bucs.
That could be 11 of the 19 picks on offense.
That would lead to 8 defensive players that have to make it to the Bucs.
Hunter, Carter, Graham, Johnson, Pierce, Barron, Stewart, Williams, Nolan, etc.
And some others that Joe has already talked about as possible 1st round choices for the Bucs.
Draft could actually work out for Bucs to get a studly de or dl guy.

If we’re truly going all in on being a legit contender, then I think you have to keep Dean for depth. We resigned Hall, added another vet CB, likely draft another…..Dean goes down we have Hall but you unload Dean and now we need another CB that will likely take half a season or more to master Bowles defense. Even if you draft a CB, still will need time to learn his assignments in a very complex system. Hopefully with a legit pass rush, Dean can play more press coverage and won’t be forced to sit in a zone with 7 yds of cushion coverage.

Remind us, who was drafted @19 last year?

For every talking head that says Bucs got the better of the two players there is one that says Bosa was the best signing in all of free agency. When reddick went from a 15Mil year to 14Mil and Bosa went from a 20Mil year to 12.6Mil the Bills got a better value. As far as production it will all come out in the wash.
When you play a couple games a year against a QB like Bryce Young that gets sacked 60+in 2023 the pass rushers look like gangbusters. When a Canales comes in and gets him throwing the ball early or throwing it away the sack bag gets smaller by more than half and pass rushers look Meh. NFC North feasted on Calab Williams last season and this year it will be someone else’s turn.
Should the Bucs play at Seattle and Darnold hold the ball for the deeper throws he may get hit for a half dozen sacks, and everyone will be going crazy. Then the team might not get another from the D Line for another 6 weeks.
Besides the Texans and Saints and maybe Seattle I don’t see many other teams on the Bucs schedule where there will be possible bushel baskets of sacks to be had.
Hopefully Riddick won’t be so Gung Ho on getting the QB that he loses the corner, the rush defense suffers, and CB’s are a revolving door on IR. Half the games are against Mobile QB’s so I would not let the Dog off the leash too often.

How do we feel about Ojulari and Okudah moving around? Looks like they were pretty gettable (not sure if they would’ve fit our cap) I know the names and know they’re not bums, were they ever in play/should they have been? Both positions of huge need for us

Licht might have actually positioned the Bucs to be able to trade down for more picks. This draft class seems very shallow on ‘can’t miss’ players and very deep in ‘potential’ players.

I actually would have preferred they sign Hasson and Bosa. They defense could have been a pass rush problem with both those guys.

Reddick is as welcome as an addition can be and one of the best deals made in FA this year but he is most likely only a one year rental. If he gives the Bucs what he produced for four of the past five years they will be faced with having to pay a 32 year old edger twentysome million per for a few years which is not something I hope they would do. I have about as much faith in Braswell to step in to replace him in 2026 as I do in Thunderbird Funderburke replacing Dean. I am delighted with this signing. The Bucs got more pass rush but they need MORE pass rush. I’ll take it in the form of Azeez Ojulari on a cheap multi year deal in FA or preferably Donovan Ezeiruaku at 19. After that the Bucs need MOAR! pass rush like, for instance Landon Jackson in round two. Reddick is a fantastic addition but he is the beginning, not the end of the Bucs addressing their lack of outside pressure.

Geno that’s all true but your Math is a little off. It’s 7 players. 11 + 7 =18
The Bucs pick #19.
If we see another Qb or Rb moving up passed 19, it’s a win. Lately I’ve seen some mock’s with Qb Dart and another RB bf the Bucs/19. We know QBs always seem to raise to the top in April. I’m hoping we get the number down to 5 or at least 6 by the draft.

Absolutely. Bosa has not done anything in 3 years because of injuries. Would have been a horrible signing. Reddick is in his prime and just went to a bad situation in a bad way. He will explode in the Bucs defense.
They just need to draft an ILB and another CB.
Superbowl contenders

100% with you on the final words here Joe. Joey Bosa and Dean both have a knack for being on the IR list.. so let’s say that the last two and a half years Dean has played almost a full season, all together. Idk about him.. They sent a message last season and what did do?? I think that inside he laughed about it.

Agree with MORE…. Keep adding DL DE LB

I would like to see Licht trade up and get an elite edge prospect
